Reading Is My Super Power

Children came with their families, with friends, with Schools and early childhood centres to Victoria Park in Forbes last Friday to take part in literacy rich activities for the annual Forbes Reading Downtown Day. The sun was shining on a park full of children and adults dressed to the theme “Reading is my Super Power”. Children right from birth to Year 12 took part in the day, with the little ones participating in literacy activities with volunteers from Red Bend Catholic College and Forbes High assisting. “By engaging children of all ages we hope to reinforce the message about the importance of reading with children right from birth,” said Forbes Birth to Kinder Secretary, Maree Yapp. “What a super powered reading day this has been, the costumes are brilliant, the activities are awesome and everyone has had some fun,” continued

Maree. The day was once again supported by Phil Donato MP who arrived to read to the children, and with great excitement our local Mayor Phyllis Miller also read to groups of children young and old. The Trainee Ranger and Weeds Officer from Council joined in the day reading a book relating to animal safety with the children and Landcare and Forbes North Public School provided some practical activities using reading as a super power. CatholicCare, Mainly Music, KDS, Central West Libraries, and Forbes SaCC joined the Schools to provide activities and engage with the community. Forbes Shire Council provided free books to children under five who came along on the day to encourage and support reading in the home.

MAYORAL NOTES As the drought continues, not only does the community come together to help each other through this tough time, but businesses do as well. This week I attended the Forbes Drought Business Forum at Council Chambers. It was great to listen to the ways businesses are trying new things to keep customers coming through their doors. Speakers from Central West Business HQ presented ways to adapt to several local business owners and ways in which they can collaborate to create unique customer experiences. Everyone walked away knowing there is support from other businesses in our community, if they need it. Council received news this week that a Sydney firm has been granted the road work contract for the thirty overtaking lanes upgrade along the Newell Highway. This is so disappointing to hear Forbes Shire Council, along with a few other Councils accredited to do the work, were overlooked completely. I have let the Minister know we would like to keep these jobs in our Shire, especially during this awful drought. I will

for members of our community and provide contributions to various projects we have undertaken. Again I would like to encourage everyone to shop local rather than online. We don’t need to make the rich richer, we need to support our local business owners and keep them open. That is all for me this week and I look forward to the build-up to the Forbes Show next week. Helping Learner Drivers Become Safer Drivers

Parents and supervisors of local learner drivers are encouraged to attend a free workshop which will be held at Forbes High School on Tuesday 3rd September 2019. The free two hour workshop, Helping Learner Drivers Become Safer Drivers, will offer parents and supervisors hands-on advice on how to provide the most effective driving practice for learner drivers. Lachlan Shire Council's Road Safety and Injury Prevention Officer, Belinda Coe, says the workshop offers practical advice to parents and supervisors on how to help learner drivers become safer drivers. "Parents and supervisors of learner drivers have a crucial role to play in making our roads safer. That is why Parkes Shire Council have teamed up with Roads and Maritime Services to hold these FREE two hour workshops. The workshop covers the licencing system, how to use the Learner Driver Logbook including the use of digital logbooks, licence conditions for learner and P-plate drivers, the benefits of on-road driving sessions, tips on supervising a learner driver and more,” said Mrs Coe. "Parents and supervisors who have attended this workshop in the past have found that it boosted their confidence, helped them better plan driving sessions and allowed them to share their experiences with other parents and supervisors," Mrs Coe said. The Helping Learner Drivers Become Safer Drivers workshop will be held at Forbes High School on Tuesday 3rd September commencing at 5:30pm. Light refreshments will be available during the workshop. Bookings are essential and can be made by calling Belinda Coe on 6861 2364.

NSW Small Winemakers Wine Show Public Tasting Tonight

The 2019 NSW Small Winemakers Wine Show started on Monday 26th August at the Forbes Town Hall with a record number of entries received. This year 620 wines from 91 wineries from across NSW and the ACT were judged during the three day show. NSW Small Winemakers Wine Show President, Mark Watts said it was excellent to see how many wines had been entered this year. “This show will be our largest in the past 10 years,” Mark said. “The show is open to all NSW and ACT wine producers that crush a maximum of 500 tonnes annually and to see a number of new entries from wineries that haven’t entered our show before is very positive,” continued Mr Watts. This year, Jeff Byrne continued as Chairman of Judges. Jeff was the Chief Winemaker at Agnew Wines in the Hunter Valley until the end of June and has now relocated with his family to Orange to develop his own winery. “Jeff has served as a Panel Chair and Judge for many years and brings a wealth

of experience to the judging team,” Mark said. “Jeff and the committee have chosen the other 10 judges from across various NSW Wine Regions. They will join Jeff to select the top wines based on their appearance, aroma, body, taste and finish,” said Mark. The NSW Small Winemakers Wine Show Public Tasting night will be held tonight Friday, 30th August from 6.30pm to 8.30pm at the Forbes Town Hall. Entry is $25 and includes finger food. Tickets are available at the door. The Gourmet Wine Dinner, featuring the trophy winning wines complimented with a five course meal, will be held at Eat Your Greens at Eugowra on Saturday, 14th September. Tickets are $120 and also includes return bus travel with the bus departing Forbes Town Hall at 6pm. Tickets can be purchased online at https://www.123tix. com.au/events/5145/gourmet-wine-dinner or at the Public Tasting tonight. Local communities throughout the Central West are set to share in $150,000 of funding under the latest round of the popular Stronger Communities Programme. Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Infrastructure, Transport and Regional Development Michael McCormack said projects funded would deliver social benefits as part of the Federal Liberal and Nationals Government’s commitment to building stronger regions nationwide. “Our local communities are the heart of this great country and the investment in local projects under the Stronger Communities Programme is about invigorating these communities according to local priorities and making sure they continue to succeed well into the future,” Mr McCormack said. “This type of investment brings our communities together by strengthening social connections, building community participation and delivering a brighter and more vibrant future for regional communities. I urge all eligible Central West organisations to submit an expression of interest.” Expressions of Interest are open until 5pm on Wednesday 4th September. A consultation committee will help Mr McCormack assess those who express interest. Organisations intending on submitting an application needed to first submit an expression of interest by this date. Expressions of interest should include a short description of the project, total cost, details of matching funding or in-kind contribution, why the project is important to the community and contact details. Expressions of Interest forms can be requested by emailing michael.mccormack. mp@aph.gov.au or by calling 6921 4600. Mr McCormack will then officially invite the successful proponents to submit an application. A maximum of 20 projects will be funded across the electorate. Grants will be available between $2,500 and $20,000 for successful applications. All applicants must have an ABN and be an incorporated entity.

Monte Nominated For ACRA

James “Monte” Irvine who was a previous announcer on 2LVR in Forbes and resident of Forbes has been nominated for an Australian Commercial Radio Award (ACRA). In 2017 Monte took a job in Inverell, on 2NZ as the breakfast announcer and has been nominated for Best Community Service Project for the project entitled “Bottles For Bundarra”. The Australian Commercial Radio Awards (ACRAs) are held annually by Commercial Radio Australia. Now in their 31st year; the ACRAs are a celebration of the wealth of talent that drives the Australian Commercial Radio industry. The awards are designed to recognise excellence in all areas of radio broadcasting including news, talk, sport, music and entertainment. When we caught up with Monte and asked what does this mean to you to be to be nominated for an ACRA he said “It’s still sinking in, the two other finalists are just as worthy winners, but for me it shows the power of radio to connect with a community and make a difference in someone’s life. It has also made me so thankful for everyone that supported me and encouraged me to pursue my dream. I would like to thank Kevin Dwyer from 2LVR who gave me the chance to grow my passion in radio and EJ from 2PK who encouraged me to apply for the job at 2NZ in Inverell.”

Betland Brothers Combine For Win Saturday’s Men’s competition was the annual American Foursomes, sponsored by Milton Cartwright, and contested by 28 pairs of players. This event requires good combination of players abilities, which were ably demonstrated by the winners. Steve and John Betland used their brotherly ESP to produce a winning score of 65 Nett. It was a delightful amalgam of shots which compiled a 34-31 split. Runners-up in a near equal score were Terry Griffiths and Craig Barrett, with a handicap assisted 65.5 nett. The ball sweep went to 67.5 nett on count back. The lucky recipients were: 65 – S and J Betland; 65.5 – T Griffiths/ C Barrett; 66 – N McMillan/ B Carpenter; 66.5 – B Everest/ P Maher; 67 – L Little/ G Falvey; 67.5 – B Hazell/ W Judge, A Dukes/ S French. The NTP’s went to: 9th – D Churchill; 18th – S Betland, with only three 2’s scored overall. Visitors included players from Hervey Bay and Dubbo.
