Early Learning Matters At Forbes Preschool
Early Learning Matters Week is an exciting opportunity for all early childhood services and educators to show local politicians and the broader community the breadth of exciting ways children learn in quality play-based early childhood programs and services. Today (Friday 6th September) Forbes Preschool is excited for Mayor Phyllis Miller to visit and see first-hand the amazing opportunities the children have at this quality early learning centre. Unfortunately, Deputy Prime Minister and Member for the Riverina and Central West Michael McCormack is busy today but he is organising a visit later in the month. “It is really significant that all children have some kind of preschool or early education. We make it our objective at Forbes Preschool to try to ensure all children living
in or around Forbes have access to quality early learning, either at our Preschool or one of the other quality centres in town,” said Amy Shine, Preschool Director. The first Early Learning Matters Week last year was a huge success with inspiring learning activities and provocations flooding Instagram with the hashtag #EarlyLearningMatters and over 70 politicians visiting services in NSW. Early Learning Matters Week is a chance to celebrate and share how the Forbes Preschool services make a difference in children’s lives and it also increases community understanding of how investing in your child’s early learning benefits everyone. The Preschool will host a BBQ lunch for all Preschool family and friends from 12noon – 1pm today.

THUMBS... MAYORAL NOTES This week I travelled to Albury for the Local Government NSW Water Conference. There is no better time to talk about water than when we are in drought. It is local government’s responsibility to keep the state and federal government focussed on improvements to drought proof our state. Melinda Pavey, Minister for Water, addressed the conference and I think we are onto a winner with her. She is passionate about delivering for rural and regional NSW. She sees the importance of local and state government working together to secure water for communities through this drought and planning and preparing for the next. Caltex and KFC work will get underway in the next week. The builders, Becon Constructions have committed to using local trades where possible to get the work done. This is great news for our local tradies with 30 weeks of construction planned to complete the work. Keeping jobs in our area is so important. The 2019 NSW Small Winemakers Wine

OUR Gal Elise Sell How long have you lived in or around Forbes and what is the best thing about living here? I have lived here for about a year and a half now. I love the community, everyone is so helpful and friendly, I also enjoy the Ski Dam too! Where do you work or what do you do currently and what do you enjoy about it? I am a Personal Trainer at Anytime Fitness. I enjoy teaching people about health and fitness, and helping them reach their goals. Seeing them achieve their goals is so rewarding. What is your favourite thing to do when you have free time? Anything outdoors really, but Horse Riding and Water Skiing would have to be my favourites. What makes you proud? Seeing my clients transform so much mentally and physically throughout their training, and their reaction when their hard work and persistence pays off. If you could be an animal which one would you choose and why? I would have to choose a lion, they have just always been my favourite animal. What is your all-time favourite movie, song and/or book, and why? The Lion King! It’s just a classic, I don’t think I’ll ever be too old to watch it!

Forage And Graze Locally This Spring If you think a day of grazing, tasting and meandering through vineyards to savour delectable organic food and wine sounds like an itinerary item for a trip around Tuscany, you are on the wrong continent! Cowra Tourism will be running half day guided Wine & Forage Tours of the Cowra and local wine region this spring giving you the opportunity to experience the very best of local organic food and wine. Antonio D’Onise of Antonio’s Vineyard, formally Gardener’s Ground, kicks off the tour with a wine ‘treasure’ wander through his vineyard to not only fill up on very interesting facts about organic and vegan wines, but also taste his latest imaginative shiraz and chardonnay releases. Taking over from Antonio is Sam Statham who takes the group on a wander through Canowindra’s first organic vineyard and farm at Rosnay. Along the way there is a tasting table with a range of fig and olive products. The last stop is at Wallingtons, with its unique straw bale cellar door. Sitting under the pergola tasting the Bald Hill wines with breathtaking views over the valley, while lunch is being prepared in the wood fire pizza oven, it is easy to imagine yourself in Tuscany…
What is on your bucket list? I’d like to give Plane Aerobatics or Bungee Jumping a go! What are you really good at? Sports or anything adventurous, and if I’m not good at it I’ll still give it a go. Tell us about your best holiday ever? Batemans Bay, it’s no ‘wow’ holiday destination but the company was good and I got to go Sky Diving, it was a pretty great experience! What makes your day? My pets, they are such characters! And Coffee.

Work Begins On Stage Two At Homemakers Centre Last Friday KFC and Caltex representatives were at the official sod-turning ceremony of Stage Two of the Homemakers Centre on the Newell Highway with Mayor, Phyllis Miller. Construction will commence in two weeks’ time, with fencing and sheds going up this week. The build will be 30 weeks in total and we should see them opening at the end of the first quarter of 2020. The new centre will cater for a number of heavy vehicles that use the Newell Highway day and night. Both Caltex and KFC will front the Newell Highway just north of Bunnings and Spotlight, with the Caltex offering facilities for both male and female transport industry workers. Mayor Miller is very excited about the new development. “This is a project that started about threeand-a-half years ago,” said Mayor Miller. There will also be a large emphasis on supporting local tradespeople throughout the build which is great for Forbes. Further blocks in the Homemakers Centre area are available for development.
Keeping Heritage Fresh In Forbes With Spring now upon us residents will be looking to take part in a bit of Spring-cleaning and renovation work around Forbes. Forbes Shire Council offers free professional advice from a Heritage Advisory Service, to assist with any amendments building owners may have. The advisory service is available to owners who want to renovate or redevelop private homes or commercial buildings, occupiers of buildings with historical significance, or owners of movable heritage items who want to undertake conservation work. “Forbes Shire Council wants to assist local residents to preserve our town’s amazing heritage,” says Forbes Mayor Phyllis Miller OAM. “Heritage assets are funda-
mental to the economy of Forbes as a tourism asset as well as celebrating our wonderful history.” Small grants are available from a local heritage fund, established by Forbes Shire Council with the assistance of the NSW Heritage Office. These funds can be accessed for a variety of uses, including painting, signage, repairs and purchase of historical data. Funding is usually on a dollar for dollar basis with Council contributing up to $3,000. Owners of heritage buildings and movable objects in the Forbes Shire Council area are invited to apply. Saturday’s competition was the Golf NSW/Keno 2-ball Ambrose, jointly sponsored by Marg and Ron Hurst and E Coombs and F Smith. The 72 players, playing in Men’s, Mixed and Ladies categories, were keen to win and go on to the Regional Finals. With good numbers in the Men’s category the Runners-up team were also nominated for the Regional Final: • Men’s Winners: M Spice/A Dukes with 62.75 nett. • Men’s Runners-up: D Bayley/J Boyle with 65 nett. • Mixed Winners: A Tucker/J Fletcher with 66 nett. • Ladies Winners: K Steele-Park/ J Ridley with 70.75 nett. The ball sweep in the Overall event went to 67 points, going to: 62.75 – A Dukes/M Spice; 65 – D Bayley/J Boyle; 66- B Carpenter/N McMillan, A Tucker/J Fletcher; 66.5 – D Williams/S Hayes, R Webb/ D Culley; 66.75 – P Pymont/R Smith; 67 – D Rhodes/ P Tisdell. The NTP’s went to: Men 9th – B Squires, 18th – A Dukes; Ladies 9th – S Grierson, 18th – B Drabsch. A delightful ‘2’ was scored by Jenny Fletcher on the 9th. Using Ash’s drive, which had only just cleared the creek, Jenny made a solid stroke from among the tall grass and watched as the ball shot up the green and dived into the hole. The Sunday Stableford Medley was played in good conditions. The winner was Stuart Hayes (Murrumbidgee) on 37 points, with Runner-up being Ethel Coombs on 35 points. The Ball Sweep went to Barb Drabsch on 33 points. Unfortunately there were no NTP’s recorded. On this weekend we have the Monthly Medal, sponsored by McFeeters Motor Museum on Saturday. Sunday has the Stableford Medley, and the Bogan Gate Open. By Short Putt
