Jess Dawes, Administration Marketing and Events Co-ordinator for the Forbes Business Chamber was very pleased with the attendance and participation by all who turned up on Saturday morning for the Find it in Forbes Christmas Festival. With over 400 people turning up throughout the day and wandering around the shops, stalls and even participating in events, and with the weather being on our side, it was a great day. Jess said,“ she was delighted with the way things ran and it was a great festive atmosphere throughout the whole day.’ Retailers commented that they had all benefitted and it was great to see so many visitors shopping in our local community. Stall holders also enjoyed a great day and were pleased

that they had attended the event.” Everybody loved listening to Cath Adams who provided entertainment from 11.30. The kids loved seeing Santa and telling him what they would like for Christmas. Kristen’s Dance Studio gave some fabulous performances and are to be congratulated for some of their moves on what was a very warm surface. Jess would like to say a big thank you to the sponsors, who have generously supported the event, and without whom the Find it in Forbes Christmas promotion and festival would not take place. These sponsors included John David Motors, Green Homes Australia, Forbes Phoenix, Forbes Advocate, Knights Steel Fabrications, and Bunnings.

Make a Splash MAYORAL NOTES What a great weekend for Forbes last weekend! VANFEST attracted thousands of people to our town and from all reports everything went off without a hitch. I volunteered at the bar in the VIP area on Friday night and I served people from across Australia including Perth, Melbourne, Adelaide and Brisbane. I also attended the event on Saturday and there were even more people who went along on that day. VANFEST is just going to get bigger and better each year which is great for our town. The Find it in Forbes Christmas Festival was also a success on Saturday morning and there was definitely a great vibe in town. From Friday to Sunday the Rotary Ipomoea Christmas Tree Festival was on in the Town Hall with a wonderful display of Christmas trees from a number of community groups and businesses. I congratulate everyone who put in an entry as they were all fantastic! International Day for People with Disabilities was on last Thursday and an afternoon tea was held at the Forbes Youth and Community Centre. Unfortunately I could not attend as I had the Local Government NSW Board Meeting in Sydney but from all reports it was a wonderful afternoon. Next Thursday is our December Council Meeting. The meeting starts at 1pm at the Council Chambers and all are welcome to attend. Have a great week, stay safe and God bless. Mayor, Cr. Phyllis Miller OAM

QUESTION of the week Christmas music and caroling are a big part of Christmas - what do you think about the music being played in the CBD in the lead up to Christmas this year?

IMAGE: Alex Cowhan holding Georgia Bayley, Daniel Bayley, Margaret Sheather, Scarlett Redden and Carmel Bayley.

Carols By Candlelight Victoria Park came to life on Sunday night when the Forbes Town Band and Forbes Shire Council presented the Annual Carols by Candlelight event to the delight of the Forbes Community. The event was well attended by people of all ages and regular attendees said it was the largest crowd they have seen in many years. The standard and quality of the featured artists was top notch and the Forbes Town Band did an amazing job accompanying the vocalists. Mayor Phyllis Miller welcomed everyone to the perfect evening and wished everyone a safe and happy Christmas. Special guest, Emily Pavey led some of the community carols along with many of our local talents including, James Whalan, new singing teacher with the Mitchell Conservatorium of Music, Emily Ragg and the delightful trio of Maddison Collits, Paige Ellison and Chelsea Turner. The Youth Band also performed some upbeat numbers which really got the crowd involved.

The inclusion of the Spectacular Screenings inflatable screen which displayed the carol words was a great edition to the event and enabled attendees to see the words even when it is normally too dark to see. Events such as this are not possible without the assistance provide by council and the hard work of our volunteer organisations, the Forbes Town Band and the Forbes Lions Club who provided hot food, refreshments and battery operated candles. Celebrating Abilities

Talent a Plenty at MADD Night A good crowd came along to Forbes High School Hall on Friday to support the second MADD night and weren’t disappointed by the program. On arrival they had an opportunity to view the wide variety of artwork created by students before taking their seats to enjoy the rest of the program. There was an item to suit all tastes and ages. Paige Ellison and Maddison Collits opened the show with songs from the animated movie Frozen and their entrance and mobility throughout the performance surprised the audience. The dance troupe performed two of the pieces which were significant to their recent involvement in the 2015 Schools Spectacular and Kyle Ryan brought the house down with his rap solo. The support unit performed a number of items, each with a different theme and not only were they entertaining but all of the performers had a wonderful time and really enjoyed themselves. The drama ensemble and individual and

group musical performers were excellent and reinforced the depth of talent which exists at Forbes High. The event was an excellent way to showcase the many talented students and their supportive teachers at Forbes High School. When School Principal, Mr Charles Dwyer, was asked which of the acts was his favourite, he stated that he could not pick just one but was very impressed with the enthusiasm and impromptu performances of Sam Taylor. The event was a credit not only to all of the performers but to the teachers who have been preparing the students for many weeks leading up to the night. Students thanked all of their teachers and in particular, Mr Andrew Swan, for their dedication and hard work in creating this event and allowing them to show their family, friends and the community the many learning opportunities available at Forbes High School. By Anita Morrison

International Day of People with Disabilities is held on December 3 each year and aims to promote an understanding of people with a disability and encourage support for their dignity, rights and well-being. Forbes Shire Council and House With No Steps hosted an afternoon tea on the 3rd December at the Youth and Community Centre to increase public awareness, understanding and acceptance of people with a disability. It was also a chance to celebrate the achievements and contributions that they make within the community. House With No Steps is one of Australia’s leading providers of disability services, dedicated to ensuring people with disabilities have greater choice, control and freedom. Forbes is lucky to be associated with this organisation and provides employment opportunities for people with disabilities with Aussie Biscuits, Home/Business Maintenance and in the Office located in Rankin Street. Around 40 people attended the afternoon tea event and enjoyed the delicious food which was catered for by Cassandra Tyack and provided by council before engaging in some activities. The Schools as a Community Centre provided the ability sports kit for the afternoon which was put to good use with everyone enjoying the modified volleyball and other modified games.

Jemalong Wool Weekly Market Update Week ending: 4 December 2015

This week saw little movement in the NRI which closed at 1273, two cents below the previous weeks close. It was a fairly small national total at 37,172 bales, 31% less than the corresponding sale from last year. Despite the lower volumes the market got off to a slow start. Merino fleece lost some ground on Wednesday before recovering on Thursday. As with recent weeks, the better types were the main focus and found good support over both days. The direction for Merino Skirtings was less clear with an overall steady tone punctuated by both rises and falls, although any movements were fairly minor. Crossbreds struggled under the weight of another large offering, losing between 10 and 30 cents. While Merino Cardingsrose 10 cents for the week. 49,170 bales are currently forecast for next week, and while it will be the largest offering in eight months it still falls short of the corresponding sale last season, by 5,000 bales or 9.3%.

Clearing Sale Success for KMWL Kevin Miller, Whitty, Lennon and Co conducted a very successful clearing sale last Saturday at “Galwary”, Eugowra. Vendors Ian and Anne Burns and property manager Colin O’Connor presented a quality line up of farm machinery, sheep handling equipment and workshop tools which had been used during their 12 year ownership of “Galwary”. There were a total of 160 bidders who registered on the day, having travelled from as far afield as Bourke, Merrygoen, Dunedoo, Trangie, West Wyalong, Young, Yass, Crookwell and Bathurst, as well as the local

area. Those who attended recognised the wellmaintained condition of the items, and with many lots in as new condition, some strong prices were recorded throughout the sale. With a large crowd of buyers and quality items, a total clearance of all lots was also achieved. And as with most clearing sales, it was also a good day out for the locals to catch up and grab a steak sandwich to support the Eugowra Lions Club, who manned the barbeque. By Brendan Mansbridge

RURAL ROUNDUP How to Turn Dry Feed into Fuel Summer feeding can often be a difficult time, dry feed/stubble generally has little nutritional valve. However, there are some simple, and highly effective techniques available that can boost your livestock production and profits through the summer period. Once residual grain has been cleaned up, stubbles and dry pastures generally have plenty of fibre but not much else. Livestock tend to maintain on this type of feed, but production is quite low. On dry feed, rumen microbes simply get by, producing little energy and protein for your livestock due to the lack of starch in the system. Starch is required to drive rumen efficiency and weight gain in stock on dry feed. Adding starch to the system ensures high utilisation of the dry feed – more is digested and the energy contained is converted to weight gain. Delivering starch into a dry feeding situation can be done either via a specialised loose lick powder that has been formulated to be highly effective, low cost and simple to implement; or via adding a high-starch grain, such as barley or wheat with the correct buffering, in self-feeders to the system. Both are highly effective in delivering results in growth and feed efficiency during the summer period. To find out more and get a plan in place for your summer nutrition needs, please contact our AgriWest animal production specialist today!

LEGAL Eagle

Solicitors Ethics

In addition to their duties to clients, solicitors have other obligations under the law and an overriding duty to the Court. As officers of the Court, solicitors must not only obey the law, they also have to ensure the efficient and proper administration of justice. Legal practice in NSW is governed by the Legal Profession Act 2014, the Legal Profession Regulation and the Solicitors’ Rules. What are the other duties? In all their dealings, a solicitor must uphold the principles by which they are governed. Whilst observing their duties to the client, solicitors must: • not knowlingly mislead the Court. • act with honesty and courtesy towards other solicitors, parties and witnesses. Solicitors can not continue to act for a client if there is a potential or is in fact a conflict of interest. • be frank in their responses and disclosures to the Court • be diligent in their observance of undertakings. Some common examples include: • not influencing witnesses • not providing bail for a client • not being a witness in a client’s court case • withdrawing from representing a client when the client deliberately misleads the Court. What happens when the duties conflict? Sometimes situations arise when acting in the client’s best interests interferes with a solicitor’s duties to the administration of justice. The law provides that solicitors give precedence to their duties to the administration of justice and the Court. For example, if a Client tells a Solicitor that he is guilty of the crime he is being tried for, the Solicitor must withdraw if the Client persists in pleading not guilty. Clients sometimes do not understand the Ethics that a Solicitor must abide by.

Medical Services Continue to Strengthen Following a Stellar Five Years for the Forbes Medical Centre Waiting times to see a doctor are improving in Forbes since the inception of the towns Medical Centre with doctor’s numbers doubling in the town over the past five years. The Forbes Medical Centre has evolved from being a “suburban general practice” to a sustainable large general practice that is attractive to graduate doctors. The Forbes Medical Centre has evolved from being two small general practices in the town to a large teaching and academic general practice. Local Patient Neil Biddle visited the centre on the opening day five years ago and has been very impressed with the development of medical services in Forbes since, “The new facility is great with practice nurses available and a lot more services,” Mr. Biddle said. “Plus the hospital is right across the road making everything very accessible.” Following surveys conducted in the early 2000’s, local GP’s identified the need to develop one large facility in order for Forbes to be more attractive for young doctors

graduating from university. It was at the same time Forbes was down to five permanent doctors. The primary purpose in establishing the Forbes Medical Centre was to meet these wishes of young doctors and in doing so make Forbes an attractive destination. “An unexpected bonus is that with the critical mass of Doctors, the Forbes Medical Centre has also been able to attract visiting specialists, multiple allied health professionals, university funding, enhanced administration plus other services,” Forbes Medical Centre Practice Manager Beverlie Gardiner said. “The challenge for the centre now is to maintain the small doctor’s surgery feel for patients despite being a large medical centre.” The Forbes Medical Centre now employs 28 staff including Doctors, Nurses, Reception and Administration Staff as well as engages a number of contractors including bookkeeping and IT services, Nurse Practitioner, Dietitian, cleaners and handyman services.

Dianne Loses Locks for Mental Health

IMAGE: Forbes North Public School Principals’s entry

Christmas Tree Festival The Rotary Club of Forbes Impomea hosted its annual Christmas Tree Festival over the weekend with many people calling in to the Town Hall to peruse the wonderfully creative trees on display. Now in its 5th year the festival attracted 92 entries, a number that has been steadily increasing since the 50 they received in their first year. Organisers of the event were pleased, once again, with the support of the community and were excited by the new entries they received this year. “There has been an increase in the number of families who submitted trees this year” Sueanne Nixon said which is a great contrast to the many regular businesses, schools and community groups that have supported the festival since the very first year. News On Rankin, who have entered each year, were very enthusiastic again this year accepting the invitation to attend within the first 24 hours and were the first to set up their entry for the year. Sueanne made special mention of Forbes North Public School, who have always been strong supporters of the event, this year an entry was received from every class at the school as well as an entry from the school’s Principal, Steve McAlister. Every entry was unique and shows great imagination. Along with regular visitors to the event, many Vanfest visitors called in to take a look at the wonderful display. Many commented on what a great town Forbes is and that the Tree Festival and Christmas Markets were excellent adding something extra to the whole weekend and making their stay more enjoyable. tel and welcome new members at every opportunity. The group raise valuable funds which support many local projects each year including: An Agricultural cropping and cotton growing program for students at Forbes High School and Red Bend College, Can Assist, Havannah House, Salvation Army, St Vincents De Paul, Church in the School Yard, Awards for local school presentation assemblies, John Flynn Remote Medicine – support for trainee doctors in Forbes, Polio Plus as well as other local appeals. A special project they are currently working on is to raise funds to support a dollar for dollar grant to purchase and install seating around the new section of the walking track around our beautiful lake. Organisers wanted to thank the local community for their continued support of the Christmas Tree Festival and in particular Forbes Shire Council for providing a wonderful venue to house this magnificent display. Dianne Decker is an upstanding member of our community who goes above and beyond to promote a great cause and Tuesday was no different when she gladly shaved her head to promote awareness for Mental Health issues. Dianne not only wants to make people aware of mental health issues but also the impact that it has on the lives of all associated with it and the connection that it often has with domestic violence. Dianne is raising funds for this worthy cause and any money raised will be used to provide training for nurses, doctors, emergency support staff and medical professions at the Forbes District Hospital. Dr Laksito was on hand to offer encouraging words of support and, along with Olya Willis, provided entertainment through the proceedings. Young hairdresser, Natalie Hocking, who works at Bron’s Hair Design, volunteered her services to shave Di’s head and did a very professional job. Another of Di’s passions is working with the disabled and she has been instrumental in gaining and sustaining employment for many disabled people through her role at OCTEC an organisation which assists people with disabilities to improve their skills and increase opportunities for permanent employment. After a recent illness and associated complications Dianne found herself in a situation she had not encountered before where she was reliant on others for routine activities. Her determination saw her push through her predicament and she was extremely grateful for the support she received. She is constantly finding ways to support others which was confirmed by Parkes Shire Council Mayor, Ken Creith who has known Dianne for many, many years through a variety of different avenues who described her as a “passionate community member”. Dianne will succeed at anything she puts her mind to and at the end of the formalities asked all attendees to make a paper plane and fly them for Mental Health. By Anita Morrison

Forbes Dragon Boat Club receives $10,000 Funding from the State Government The Forbes dragon Boat Club, which began in 2011 has been steadily been growing their membership, currently 38 members from both Forbes and Parkes. This will give them good access to the lake and protect the boat for the elements and vandalism. The club were very excited about winning the grant and Andrew Gee congratulated the club and told members that this was the third largest grant given out. This money

will be used to build a shed to house their two boats on the western end of the Sport & Rec Club bowling green. This will give the Club very good access to the lake and protect the boat from the elements and also from vandalism. Mr.Gee said,”he was excited that this grant will help the Club achieve even greater deeds on the water.’ By Anita Morrison

Exceptional Golf by Peter Dawson Saturday’s play was the Monthly Medal, sponsored by Central West Diesel. Once again Peter Dawson played exceptional golf to finish on 70 nett. His front-9 was 2-over, courtesy of a ‘7’ on the second, but his back-9 was 1-under, helped by a couple of birdies. Close behind was Barry Parker, with a fine 71 nett. The B-grade (24) culminated in a nailbiting finish. An early player, Jeff House was 3-over after 15, but then it went wrong and he dropped 8 shots on the last holes

finishing with 68 nett. At the end of the field, Adam Borger came home in par figures for his 68 nett. This ensured he won on count back from Jeff. The C-grade was a triumph for consistency when Frank Hanns came in with a nett 69. Close behind was Stuart French with 70 nett. Sunday was the regular Stableford Medley. Many players were out early, among the ‘Sixes’ players to beat the heat. Dave Rhodes fired home with 39 points.

He had a comfortable lead over Stuart French (37), who is truly enjoying his golf, until of course the handicapper catches him. The Vets Golf, played on Thursday Dec 3rd, included the Single Stableford and Xmas Hamper comp played over 18 holes, and the Yearly results as compiled for both Parkes and Forbes players. Now for the Mick Miller Shield Results, tabulated over the year: Points Comp: Winner - M Cartwright (F) 100; R/up – D Rogers (P) 90. Stableford comp: Winner – T Edols (F) 576; R/up J O’Shannessy (P) 564. And there are a few stories. Local history was made when a group of five players each scored a birdie on the 1st hole. Luckily they did not par the first, or else their scores would have crumbled, as folk lore indicates. By Short Putt
