Red Bend Has Much to Celebrate
The Red Bend Catholic College HSC class of 2015 has much to celebrate as they have achieved exceptional results. The College community is once again extremely proud of its students and their achievement in this rigorous and highly regarded examination. Twelve students have been recognised as Distinguished Achievers as they achieved 22 Band 6s across 14 separate courses. A
band 6 is equivalent to a mark in a course that is above 90. Fifty two students achieved Band 5s across 27 courses. In total, the cohort received 150 Band 5s which is equivalent to a mark between 80 and 90. This is, of itself, an exceptional outcome. Another indicator of very solid performance was the number of Band 4’s: 165 Band 4’s across 27 sub-
jects. A Band 4 is a mark of 70 or above. In addition to these results one student has been recognised for her excellent HSC Major work. Quinn Anderson was nominated for Encore which showcases the top individual Music performances. The 2015 excellent HSC results reflect the determination, perseverance and commitment of the students, and the dedication and commitment of the teachers and other staff that taught and supported them. Br Michael, Principal

Cool Down at the Big Splash Water World The Big Splash Water World has arrived in the Central West for its second year of operation and Parkes Showground is the venue until Saturday before they move on to Orange on Boxing Day. Jesse and Alicia McDonald launched the water world last summer travelling from Gunnedah to Tamworth and then on to Dubbo. This year they have begun in Parkes before moving on to Orange then to Mudgee before finishing in Muswellbrook. Their big waterslide, ‘The Triple Dipper’ is the biggest inflatable waterslide in the world measuring 180 ft. long and 55 ft. high which means it’s as tall as the tree line! The middle lane is the fastest with a straight drop to the bottom and the two outer lanes have some turns making them a slower
ride for the less adventurous. They have 4 other slides for those not daring enough to give the Triple Dipper a go, ranging from the ‘Baby Palm Trees’ for the under five year olds to the ‘Rainbow Slide’ which has 4 lanes made for racing your friends to the bottom. Parkes is very lucky to have this opportunity, what a great way to entertain the children now they have finished the school year and the weather is heating up. Entry for spectators is free and they have amusement games, a massive shaded area to keep out of the sun and slushies and fairy floss available so everyone is sure to enjoy the day out. MAYORAL NOTES It is hard to believe this is the last column I am writing for 2015. This year has flown by and I look forward to what next year will bring for the community and Forbes Shire Council. As it is the end of the year, the schools have all held their end of year presentations with many students receiving awards. This time of year really highlights the talent of our future generation and I congratulate all those students who received awards. There have also been a number of Christmas gatherings and last Friday I enjoyed a lovely Christmas lunch with the volunteers and the residents of the Mater. If anyone out there would like to be a volunteer for the Mater, please contact me. It is really rewarding and the residents love to see us each week. At the time of writing my column, we are still waiting for our Fit for the Future determination. It is like death by a thousand cuts as we wait. On the subject of IPART, it is a joke. The rate peg limit for 2016/17 has been set at 1.8%. We have already commenced budgets next year based on the 2015/16 rate peg of 2.4%. The new determination is not right. We have been a responsible Council and have not asked to go above the rate peg previously but maybe this is the straw that broke the camel’s back. To finish on a very pleasing note, Council held its Service Milestones Awards Ceremony on Wednesday afternoon with 36 employees awarded for five to 40 years of service, with 550 years between them all! I would like to make mention of the great job the staff do when it comes to implementing Council resolutions. On behalf of all of the Councillors and the community, I thank them all for the wonderful job they do. Finally, I hope you all have a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. If you are travelling during the Christmas break, please remember to stop, revive, survive and drive safely. God bless. Mayor, Cr. Phyllis Miller OAM

Youth Mental Health Tips for the holidays As we rapidly approach the end of the year it is a great time to reflect and express our gratitude for the good things – big and small – that have come our way in 2015. For many of us it can be a very difficult time, particularly for people experiencing isolation, loneliness and mental health issues, as we are bombarded with messages of celebrations, gifts and holidays. For young people, particularly those facing big life changes like starting a new school, higher education, or seeking employment, it can be a really challenging time. Losing the normal routine and structure of school, missing the regular contact of friends, or having to financially support themselves can cause additional pressure. Parents are key in helping young people to get support, so knowing the signs and symptoms something might be wrong, and then how to get help is vital. Whilst parents don’t need to be able to solve everything, noticing changes and signs that something isn’t right is a good first step. You may notice they withdraw, and stop doing things they usually enjoy, seem down, worried or irritable. There is help available. Headspace, the national youth mental health foundation provides support for parents and young people aged 12 to 25 who are having a tough time. Our service is available between 9am - 1am EST over the holiday period, including Christmas Day, by calling 1800 650 890 or visit eheadspace.org.au. Wishing you and your family a safe, relaxing and enjoyable break over the holidays. Chris Tanti, CEO headspace.

IPART is a Joke! Australia Day
Forbes Shire Mayor Phyllis Miller is disgruntled at the recently released Independent Pricing and Regulatory Tribunal (IPART) rate peg limit for 2016/17 at 1.8%. “IPART is a joke,” Mayor Miller said. “The tribunal is as independent of the State Government as I am of Forbes Shire Council.” “IPART has determined Council’s rate peg limit for 2016/17 at 1.8%. We have been a responsible Council and have not asked to go above the rate peg previously but maybe this is the straw that broke the camel’s back. “We have already commenced budgets for next year based on the 2015/16 rate peg of 2.4%. “Local Government state-wide wage costs are 41.8% of the revenue. The award has been negotiated for three years at an increase of 2.4% per annum. “To put the icing on the cake, Rural Fire Service (RFS) contributions come out this week and have increased by 3.28%. This alone puts us behind 2.2%. “IPART also needs to let Local Government get on with getting the job done for our communities,” she said. “We are the level of government that has the biggest bang for our buck and it’s about time governments of all persuasions acknowledge it.”
Australia Day has a new location and program for all to enjoy on Tuesday, January 26, 2016. A family barbecue and picnic afternoon has been planned at Colin McKenzie Park, Lake Forbes (behind the Bowlie). Starting at 4pm, there will be free children’s rides, local entertainment, food stalls, the announcement of the Citizen of the Year and Junior Citizen of the Year and fireworks. New to the program is the Ben Hall Gift, which is Forbes’ own Stawell Gift with $3000 in prize money up for grabs thanks to the Forbes Sports and Recreation Club and Walkers Ag n Vet! There will be 100m sprint races in the categories of men, women, juniors, celebrity and league vs union. Our Australia Day Ambassador for 2016 is actress Tracy Mann, who has been a familiar face on Australian television, film and theatre for more than 40 years. Tracy has featured in a number of TV series including Blue Heelers, All Saints and Wonderland and was awarded an AFI Best Actress Award for her role in the film Hard Knocks. She will be attending all of the events on Australia Day and we look forward to welcoming her to Forbes!

Forbes Smash Repairs Finalist TV Personality Comes to Forbes in Australasian Awards Sam Leonard, owner/manager of Forbes Smash Repairs is extremely thrilled, albeit somewhat shocked to learn that she was selected as a finalist in the Australasian Panel and Paint Magazine, Women in Smash Repairs. The Women in Smash Repair Awards, sponsored by NRMA Insurance, are an industry initiative that celebrate the roles women play in the running of Australia’s smash repair shops. The magazine which comes out bi-monthly, asked Sam to complete a questionnaire online. Following that, they then sent her an email and asked some more questions, which resulted in Sam being selected as one of 5 finalists. Sam was to attend the Awards lunch, however due to her plane not getting into Sydney on time, she missed her connecting flight and thus the lunch. Sam has been in the business of smash repairs now for over nine years, and has owned Forbes Smash Repairs for the past six years. She started out doing painting, and it is through her love of cars that she managed to get an apprenticeship out of it in Forbes with Kevin Vale. Sam said, “I have absolutely loved every minute of it. I am also the youngest ever nominated for this award, which is a great honour. I have continued the tradition of employing women in my business, and have with me at the moment, Raine Piercy, who is a first year apprentice.” “My aim is always to create a friendly work environment for staff, exceptional customer service, high quality repairs and refinishing and having a reputable name.
IMAGE: Sam Leonard, Forbes Smash Repairs with her award as a finalist.
I do this by ensuring the staff are enjoying their work, allowing them to have an input on the business, continuously looking for ways to improve the business whether it be by advertising, keeping up to date with where the industry is heading and involving the business in community events.” In addition, Sam employs three other people in the business, so you know where to head if you have a bingle over Christmas. Bunnings Forbes hosted well known TV personality, Jason Hodges from the popular Better Homes and Garden program which airs each Friday on 7, last Sunday. April Townsend, from Bunnings, was very pleased with the day which attracted around 200 people who came to watch the informative presentations which Jason gave. Jason started his demonstrations at 10.00am and gave some very useful and practical tips on how to keep your plants and gardens alive and healthy throughout the summer months, making particular references to the extreme temperatures which our gardens are subjected to. Jason fielded many questions relating to a variety of gardening issues and due to the number of questions cut short his demonstration to provide one on one consultations with lucky attendees. In conjunction with the gardening demonstrations selected suppliers were on hand to provide information and advice on their products. The Ryobi sales representatives was only too happy to join in with the day’s activities with a product display and also provided an activity. Participants were shown how to make a planter box which they were then able to take home. Kaboodle, leading company supplying kitchen and bathroom fixtures, provided a display and gave shoppers the opportunity to see the latest products available. Customers had expert advice on outdoor and indoor living. Children did not miss out either with a free jumping castle and a variety of children’s activities to keep them amused throughout the day. April was very pleased with the success of the event which attracted local people as well as visitors from neighbouring towns. She is hopeful that the store will be able to provide more of these events in the future which cater to a variety of different interests.

Stress Less This Christmas
Over the Christmas period, we all take a good look at ourselves and of course we have all made those great promises to ourselves in the form of New Year resolutions, which unfortunately sometimes fall by the wayside. Christmas is typically one of the most stressful events of the year. The expense of buying gifts, the pressure of last minute shopping, and the heightened expectations of family togetherness can all combine to undermine our best intentions. Some practical suggestions can help you reduce your ‘Christmas stress’. To help you through the Christmas period, for your general Health and Wellbeing, here are some helpful tips to follow: • Try to be moderate – it may be the season to be jolly, but too much food and alcohol is harmful. Drink driving is a real danger and is illegal. If you can’t (or don’t want to) step off the social merry-go-round, at least try to eat and drink in moderation. • Get enough sleep – plan for as many early nights as you can. • Keep moving – keeping up your regular exercise routine can give you the fitness and stamina to make it through the demands of the festive season. Here are some other tips for you to note particularly for Christmas Day:
The Christmas lunch (or dinner)
Preparing a meal for family and friends can be enjoyable but tiring and stressful at the same time. Some tips to reduce the stress of Christmas cooking include: • If you are cooking lunch at home, delegate tasks. You don’t need to do everything yourself. • Consider keeping it simple – for instance, you could always arrange for a ‘buffet’ lunch, where everybody brings a platter. • Make a list of food and ingredients needed. Buy as many nonperishable food items as you can in advance – supermarkets on Christmas Eve are generally extremely busy. • Write a Christmas Day timetable. For example, 11.30am – put turkey in the oven. • You may need to order particular food items from your supermarket by a certain date. Check to avoid disappointment.

The Community to Decide Member for Orange, Andrew Gee and the Lachlan Health Service invite the Forbes community to help decide what contents should be included in a time capsule to celebrate the completion of the new building at Forbes Hospital. “This is a unique opportunity for the community to help create a historical record that reflects the Forbes community’s health services today, and will hopefully be something that future Forbes community members can appreciate and be proud of,” Mr Gee said. Children aged 12 years or under are invited to draw a picture of what they imagine Forbes Hospital will be like in 100 years’ time. All drawings must be done on a piece of blank A4 paper and mailed to the Forbes Hospital. To be eligible for selection participants must include their full name, age and address on the back of the picture. People aged 13 years and over are in-
vited to describe in 30 words or less what item or document should be placed in the time capsule and why. Health Smart • Book well in advance if you plan to have lunch at a restaurant. Some restaurants may be fully booked for months before Christmas, so don’t wait till the last minute
Relationships
Stress, anxiety, and depression are common during the festive season. If nothing else, reassure yourself that these feelings are normal. Stress reduction strategies include: • Don’t expect miracles. If you and certain family members bicker all year long, you can be sure there’ll be tension at Christmas gatherings. • Avoid known triggers. For example, if politics is a touchy subject in your family, don’t talk about it. If someone brings up the topic, use distraction and quickly move on to something else to talk about. • Use relaxation techniques, such as deep breathing or focusing on your breath to cope with anxiety or tension. • Family members involved in after-lunch activities (such as cricket on the back lawn) are less likely to get into arguments. Plan for something to do as a group after lunch if necessary. • People under stress tend to ‘self-medicate’ with alcohol, cigarettes and other drugs. Try to remember that drugs can’t solve problems or alleviate stress in the long term
Skin Cancer Awareness
We are headed for a hot summer, so remember to keep covered up. You can Spot a Skin Cancer Using your ABCs with The Australian College of Dermatologists saying you should look out for the following when checking a mole or freckle:Asymmetrical shapes, Borders that are uneven, Colours, shades of brown, red, pink or black can be suspicious, Diameter of more than 6mm, evolving and new spots. If unsure, it is best to get a sound medical opinion from one of the local Skin Cancer Clinics.

How long have you lived in Forbes? I have lived in Forbes for 49 Years. What do you love most about Forbes? I really like the people in the Forbes community, they are friendly and welcoming. What are your hobbies or interests? Gardening is not only a hobby but my passion, I love being outdoors enjoying the results. How long have you been putting up a Christmas Light display? This would be the fourth year. Why did you choose to raise money for charity and how much have you raised? The first year we raised $1000 for House With No Steps after a family member suggested it. The second year we chose CanAssist because we knew a little girl who had cancer and now my son Josh has cancer so have continued the tradition. We have raised $13,000 in the past three years from donations made by people visiting my home to look at the Christmas Display and at an Open Garden Day we have once a year.

Christmas Danger
Christmas time can be full of nice treats shared with your pet but some of these are dangerous! A few things to be aware of: • We often get phone calls about rogue dogs stealing their owner’s chocolate at this time of year… Chocolate can be quite harmful for your pet! Dark chocolate is the worst of all types – the more cocoa the worse it is. Caffeine and theophylline in chocolate can be very dangerous for your pet’s heart and blood. If you find evidence of a chocolate thief ring the vet straight away. • Onions are very toxic for your dog’s blood so avoid feeding any onion. Be aware of onions in gravys, sauces and chicken stuffing! • Another common treat that can make your pet sick is the fat off a Christmas roast or BBQ. Excessive fat can cause severe gut upsets and pain requiring days of hospitalization and treatment. Worst case scenario it can cause severe pancreatitis which can affect the liver and surrounding organs. A better treat is a section of the lean meat. • Cooked Bones, Corn Cobs and Kebab sticks can get stuck and poke holes in intestines on their way through. Don’t do it to your dog!!! Be aware of where you leave the kebab sticks from the BBQ!! • Always be aware of playful cats in tinsel and Christmas lights. Every now and then we get an electrocuted, inquisitive pet. If possible monitor your pet when around your tree/decorations and if need be put coverings over cords or raise decorations out of reach. From all of us here at the Forbes Veterinary Clinic we would like to wish you a Merry Christmas and Happy & Safe New Year!!

More Than $55,000 for Forbes Community Infrastructure Announced Member for Orange, Andrew Gee last week announced eight projects from the Forbes area would receive a share in $200,000 for community infrastructure under the NSW Government’s Community Building Partnership program. As mentioned in last week’s paper one of the projects to receive funding is the Forbes Dragon Boat Club, receiving a $10,000 grant. “The Community Building Partnership program allows for community infrastructure to be built, refurbished or enhanced, making an important impact on the day-today lives of our local communities,” Mr Gee said. “In many cases the funds go to much needed social infrastructure with sporting, youth, cultural and community clubs all benefiting from this year’s funding. “Projects range from $10,000 to $3,000 and will see community infrastructure improved as well as encouraging the enhancement of local community based activities that create more vibrant and inclusive communities. “Local businesses and construction jobs will also be supported which is a welcome
boost in improving local investment in the community,” Mr Gee said. A Superstar in the Making
IMAGE: The Toy Run motorcyclists on their way into town.
Forbes and Parkes Toy Run On Saturday 5th December the Midstate Motorcycle Club in conjunction with the Salvation Army held their annual Toy Run. The parade began at McFeeters Car Museum in Oxford Street Forbes and finished at Bunnings. Around thirty bikes with riders hailing from Forbes, Parkes, Molong, Canowindra and surrounding areas took to the streets to promote the event and provide a little Christmas cheer to those in need. Troy Munro, from the Salvation Army, was very impressed with the generosity of the cyclists who each donated a toy or toys which will be distributed to identified families this weekend. At present numerous toys have been received which are currently filling a 4 x 4 m room to shoulder height, Mr Munro stated. Donations are still being taken and items can be left at the Salvation Army store in Rankin Street. Northparkes Mines also support this worthy cause by sending a team of employees to assist the Salvation Army, St Vincent’s De Paul and other community organisations to sort and prepare the toys and Christmas
hampers ready for delivery. Other Motorcycle clubs around the State also organise their own Toy Run in their local area and in Newcastle this year there were 3000 participants. Troy wanted to thank the Midstate Motorcycle Club for organising the event and putting everything together and the toys will be sure to put a smile on the faces of many local children in Forbes and Parkes.
Local Rider Tom Drane from Forbes competed in the Victorian State Dirt Track Tiltles two weekends ago in Albury. Tom qualified for both the finals in his classes placing 1st in the 85cc 7-10 years and third in the 65cc 7-9 years. Tom, who is only nine has been racing since he was 4 years old and has been competing all year bringing home 4 National Titles and three State Titles. Tom’s parents and grandparents have travelled all over Australia over the past 12 months to enable him to compete. Next year Tom moves up a class to 150 cc, which will mean that he is competing against much older children. In January 2016 he has been invited to ride at the Troy Bayliss Classic invitational at Taree, and from then on will compete around Australia in his quest to win more Titles. This year Tom has also been racing go karts and last month he won the South Pacific titles in Orange in the Cadet 9 Class. It is clear to see that he has a strong passion for motorsports and will continue both disciplines next year.

Forbes Touch Grand Finals Wrap Up Last Thursday played host to the 2015 Forbes Touch Association Grand Finals in what could only be described as warm but perfect playing conditions. Having had to back up from the Monday night semi-finals, all players seemed excited at the prospect of being named premiers in their respective divisions. Mixed divisions saw five grand finals contested and having refereed division three, all teams were out to gain the upper hand very early on. In what was some very entertaining touch footy the division three grand final ended up going into extra time in a drop off scenario. BD’s scored in their first set of six and unfortunately Anytime Fitness were unable to get over the line in their corresponding attacking set and lost the game 12-11. Other mixed winners on the night were Forbes Inn Allsorts, Touch Stars, Out of Touch and CS’s. The B grade men’s and women’s finals were fast paced, exciting and played in the spirit of the game. Kitchen’s Plus went through the regular season unbeaten and were the clear favourites going into the nights main game. To their credit, the young members of Larrikins put a great fight and made the opposition work hard for every metre on the field. Kitchen’s Plus ended up going on to win 3-1. 13 Broke girls won the
women’s B grade final. Finally in the A grade divisions our winners were again two undefeated teams in both divisions being Team X in the women’s and Orcher’s Shearing in the men’s who will go down as the 2015 champions. The ladies in the women’s final played extremely well and the standard of play in both the A and B grade finals was exceptional. With a lot of junior girls coming through I think we are looking at some quality competition in the future. Claudia Lovett was named player of the final in the A grade women’s division. The men’s A grade final was one of the fastest games of touch I have seen in my time in Forbes. The level of skill was excellent and despite the score line blowing out the boys from Walkers Ag N Vet can walk away knowing they gave it their all. Tyson Reweti was named player of the final. I want to thank each and every player that has come along each week this season and pulled on the boots to have a run around. Our numbers continue to rise and the competition is getting harder and harder each year. To all the parents and guardians that have supported their children this year I also thank you because without this next generation we won’t have a competition. In closing, I would also like to thank the

committee for their tireless work in all areas of the competition. With the inclusion of Hannah and Jared this year, our little committee continues to strive towards making each and every week an enjoyable yet competitive season for all participants. I wish you a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year and I look forward to seeing you all on the touch fields in 2016.

Our Year 12 HSC students 2015 have produced outstanding results as a cohort with Band 6’s received across several subjects. It is not only about band 6s but about students achieving their potential and this group of students have produced ‘personal bests’ across all subject areas. The Senior Science class performed exceptionally well with all students receiving band 5’s and 6’s. Excellent individual success was achieved in many subjects including PDHPE Senior Science, Primary Industries, Agriculture, General Mathematics, Early Childhood, Biology, Visual Arts and In-
dustrial Technology with marks reflective of the effort students applied and the support and dedication of their teachers. Of course the staff are all thrilled with these results which has certainly inspired drive and commitment in the Year 12 students and teachers for 2016. Industrial Technology student, Isaac Wren along with the school, has recently been notified of his nomination for inclusion in the InTech 2016, annual exhibition of outstanding Major Design Projects developed by 2015 HSC Industrial Technology students. In addition to this his project will be part of a combined HSC Technology project display at the Powerhouse Museum from Friday 26th February until Sunday the 8th May. Isaac designed and produced an
interactive first person 3D puzzle game with 7 unique and challenging levels. This is a great achievement as only a limited number of projects are chosen for this display. Overall staff are pleased with the student’s results throughout the year with their assessment tasks and commend them on the study and preparation they completed prior to the commencement of the HSC examinations. Year 12’s achievements and contributions were recognised and celebrated at the annual graduation assembly in September which was a time for family, friends, staff and peers to reflect upon six years of secondary education and the experiences had along the way. Year 12, 2015 also celebrated their HSC exam completion with a Graduation Dinner on the 20th November. Congratulations Year 12, 2015 on a fantastic year, we are very proud of you. For those of you who are intending to attend University the school wish you every success as you enter the next chapter of your lives and look forward to hearing of your progress in the future.
