Wren’s Work to be Displayed at Powerhouse Museum Isaac Wren, a Year 12 Forbes High School Graduate, will have his HSC video game project included in InTech 2016 and displayed at Sydney’s Powerhouse Museum. InTech 2016 is the annual exhibition of outstanding Major Design Projects developed by 2015 HSC Industrial Technology students from Friday 24 June to Sunday 26 June 2016 from 10.00am – 4.00pm daily. In 2015, over 2500 students and their teachers from across NSW visited the InTech exhibition in Sydney. In addition to the normal InTech Exhibition in 2016, there will be a combined display of HSC Technology projects at the Powerhouse Museum. A limited number of projects from industrial Technology, Textiles & Design as well as Design & Technology will be on display from Friday 26 February 2016 to
Sunday 8 May 2016 at the Powerhouse Museum. Mr Wren’s Year 12 Major Works, a seven level game with coloured cubes to be picked up and placed on corresponding colours, was chosen for display, in a triumph for the teaching staff involved with the classes. He said it felt great to have his work on display at one of Australia’s most recognisable museums. “It’s pretty cool. I wasn’t really expecting it. I didn’t even know there were exhibitions for projects year 12 students had made,” he said. His area of expertise will be furthered when he starts a three year software engineering degree at the University of Canberra in August. By Anita Morrison

Back to School Butterflies MAYORAL NOTES This weekend is the NSW Barefoot Water Ski Forbes Tournament at Lake Forbes Aquatic Centre. Get out there and have a look at all the barefoot skiers in action! There will also be some locals competing so help cheer them on. Our first board meeting for Local Government NSW is in Sydney today. There are lots of interesting topics on the agenda with the reshaping of Local Government. I look forward to telling you all about it next week. IPART has released its draft report on the review of reporting and compliance burdens on Local Government. I am not flicking the football but by golly, the things we have to do for State Government is very costly to our communities and this review is long overdue. Our first Council meeting for the year is on Thursday, February 18. It is going to be a big day with lots happening at the moment. The meeting starts at 1pm at the Council Chambers. Have a great week, stay safe and God bless. Mayor, Cr. Phyllis Miller OAM
I still get butterflies in my stomach when I think of my first day at school. The anticipation of seeing friends, and a few people I’d rather not face, finding out who my teachers would be, all that homework, study and exams. Ok, perhaps they were knots in my stomach. But those nerves weren’t all bad, they were also about excitement and anticipation for the year ahead. For over 3.6 million students across Australia heading to primary and secondary school over the next few weeks there will no doubt be plenty of butterflies. While some students seemingly cruise through the whole thing, whether they’re starting school for the first time, moving to a new school, starting high school or heading back for a new class, some young people find it a very challenging time. And let’s face it, it can be tough for us as parents too. For some children it’s particularly difficult as they face extra pressures like getting the best grades, or dealing with bullying, and others may be dealing with mental health issues like anxiety or depression. If you are a young person with something going on, or a parent with concerns about your child, you don’t have to handle things alone. headspace the national youth mental health foundation provides support for young people aged 12 to 25 who are struggling with their mental wellbeing.

Banksia Grove wins 2016 Calare Small Business Choice Award: Jacinda Horan is the owner of Banksia Grove Florist which recently won the 2016 Calare Small Business Choice Award – Think Big Shop Small. The Award was presented to Jacinda by John Cobb MP Federal Member for Calare on Tuesday 19th January. Jacinda received an email notification advertising the award and shared the link with other businesses, friends and family as well as nominating a Forbes business for the award. The award is a people’s choice award with voting completed online. At the presentation of the award Mr Cobb stated that this was the first time that a Florist had been nominated for the award and, subsequently, won. Jacinda was very excited with the award and proudly displays it in her business located in Rankin Street.
Safer Streets Programme funding: Member for Calare John Cobb says local government organisations, community groups, chambers of commerce and eligible incorporated not-for-profit organisations are encouraged to apply for funding under Round 2 of the Coalition Government’s Safer Streets Programme, which closes in just over 2 weeks. $29.4 million is available in individual grants to fund local crime prevention projects to boost safety and deter crime through the installation of security measures such as CCTV and better lighting. “This is an investment in security infrastructure at local crime hotspots, it aims to reduce fear of crime and contribute to greater community safety and resilience in Calare,” he said. “I encourage potential applicants to contact my office to discuss their projects eligibility and to receive all submission details.” To apply, visit: https://www.ag.gov.au/CrimeAndCorruption/CrimePrevention/Pages/ProceedsofCrimeAct.aspx. Applications close 2pm on 17 February 2016.
Free micro chipping day a success: Forbes Shire Council hosted its third free microchipping day last Friday and said it was a great success. Fifty dogs and cats were microchipped thanks to funding Council received through the Responsible Pet Ownership Grants Program to help reunite stray pets with their owners rather than be taken to the pound.Council Ranger Andrew Hubbard said all three microchipping days were well attended.“Hopefully we will be able to continue providing this free service if more funding becomes available.”
Funds raised for SES and RFS: Thanks to the generosity of so many Australians, over $497,000 has been raised in support of volunteer fire brigades and emergency services through Bunnings’ annual Aussie Day Weekend Fundraiser BBQ, held nationally on Saturday 23rd January. New South Wales residents helped raise over $130,000 and these funds will go directly to local State Emergency Services (SES) and Rural Fire Services (RFS). Bunnings Managing Director John Gillam,
Police Praise Forbes for Behaviour on Australia Day The Lachlan Area Command says there was no trouble during Australia Day festivities last week, and has thanked the people of Forbes for being well behaved. Forbes celebrated Australia last Tuesday with a festival at Colin McKenzie Park in the afternoon and evening, with the junior and senior Forbes Australians of the Year announced, the Ben Hall Gift being run, as well as dragon boat rides on the river taking place and childrens rides being pre-sent. But LAC Forbes duty officer Nick Weyland said there were no reports of negative behavior on the day. “How we gage behavior of people in town is what we call public order offences and assault, and alcohol related offences. There was nothing at all in those categories [between January 23 and 26],” Officer Weyland said. “I can say we’re more than satisfied with

the way the whole town enjoyed themselves. There was nothing adverse at all. We didn’t have any drink driving offences either.” Between January 23 and 26 the NSW Police Forces implemented operation ‘Viking’, which saw additional police deployed across the state during the Australia Day period. Officer Weyland said additional police had been deployed in both Forbes and Parkes to minimise the chances of incidents occurring. “We attributed that [good behaviour] to our high profile over Australia Day as well [as residents doing the right thing],” he said. A huge crowd attended the Forbes Australia Day Festival, with Forbes Shire Council extremely happy with how proceedings went. They will consider running an event with a similar structure next year after further consultations with the community. By Joshua Matic

My House My Home Hozpots More Than Just a Garden Shop As the new year gets into full swing, many people begin to think of new ideas, and this includes new features to their homes. And when it comes to redesigning the outdoors, Hozpots Garden Centre in Forbes is the one-stop shop for all outdoor setting needs. Since moving to their new location at 42 Parkes Road, Forbes, Hozpots has been able to expand its business, and have more products available than ever before. There is an abundance of products available to help furnish the outdoor parts of any home, including pots and pedestals, statues, fountains and birdbaths, terracotta and glazed pots, cast iron doormats, hose holders, wall decorations, urns, peds and fountains. Add to this furniture items such as table settings and benches, cushions, lanterns, photo frames, mirrors, clocks and lamps, and one would be all set. There are also African thatch hut kits, ponds and pumps, plants, trees, potting mixes, pebbles and mulch to complete the perfect outdoor setting. Famed Irish home designer Eileen Gray described people as wanting to make their homes personal reflections of own personalities, but it is an instinct that has curious consequences. She added it can be a battleground, reflecting conflicts within families, or between client and designer, or designer and architect. And, occasionally, between all of them. Hozpots has all the items to make these ideologies a success. There will be no battlegrounds with the range of items, but plenty on offer to satisy an array of personalities. Their ‘Garden Chair’ is said to work with a range of large tables to fit four or more chairs, and comes in a range of colours such as sandstone, grey, terracotta or rust. The ‘Large Table’ can come in the exact same colours for those who like to match, and there are also ‘Garden Settings’ available that come with two chairs and one ‘Provincial Table’. These are also available in a range of colours. Even for those living in smaller spaces such as apartments or town houses, there are options to dress your place up. Hotzpots have a wide range of pots and planters which renowned Australian designer Jamie Durie recommends.

Forbes Receives Three Times the Amount of Normal Rain Rainfall in the last two weeks has seen Forbes record three times its normal rainfall for January, while the month as a whole recorded average temperatures, the Bureau of Meteorology has said. Forbes Airport, where official weather recordings are taken for the town, received 81.4mm of rain, with the average over the last 20 years since the Airport readings were first launched being just 29.2mm. The month started with two heat waves within the first two weeks, but ended with wetter and cooler conditions in the last fortnight. BOM climatologist Aga Turkey said while the month’s weather was variable it was not unusual. “It was quite variable. Some of these events were quite significant, but when we compare it to the climate record, it’s not particularly record breaking.” Forbes had a daily average temperature of around 33 degrees, just short of the historical average of around 34 degrees, with the hottest day being 43 degrees on January 13. Overnight lows stayed right on average at 18 degrees, while the wettest day in town was January 23 when 31.4mm fell.
The current El Nino weather pattern, which normally brings warmer and drier conditions but can still cause rain events, is expected to persist through February before declining in early autumn, Ms Turkey said. She added we could see more rain events as El Nino begins to decline, with neutral weather patterns expected to follow for the rest of the year, bringing good news to local farmers. “When we have a break down of an El Nino, it’s not unusual for parts of Australia to get some good falls,” she said. “Our climate outlook for the next three months is for wetter conditions for Central West NSW.”

New Forbes Hospital Forbes Shire Mayor Phyllis Miller OAM Could not be Happier with Forbes Hospital’s $40.9 million Redevelopment. Work started on the project in 2012 and Mayor Miller said the opening of the new building in January was an exciting milestone for the community. “The refurbishment of Forbes Hospital has been a long time coming and we are very lucky because as much as it has been called a refurbishment, the Forbes community has a brand new hospital,” Mayor Miller said. “The redevelopment of the ambulatory services is still underway and is expected to be completed in the coming months. “As part of the work, it was also terribly important for the community to keep the facade of the previous hospital. “I can only congratulate the architects on the way they have incorporated it into the new facility.” Included in the $40.9 million development was a new emergency department, patient unit, birthing suites for maternity services, clinical support services including advanced medical imaging technology, an upgraded ambulatory care unit and expanded renal facilities. Refurbishments of the ambulatory care unit and renal services are still ongoing, with completion of this expected in the coming months. The new building began use at the end of last year, but was officially opened on January 19 by Premier Mike Baird, Deputy
Premier Troy Grant, Health Minister Jillian Skinner and Member for Orange Andrew Gee. “With the hard work and dedication of not only our medical providers and doctors, but also through the support of the community, we have been able to maintain our services and have a wonderful new facility,” Mayor Miller said. “The Councillors and I could not be happier. “We have worked very hard to attract doctors and health professionals to town through the building of the Apex Medical Centre, providing subsidised accommodation at the Jemalong Regional Education Centre and supporting Yoorana Gunya. “The number of doctors in Forbes is growing, which is the reverse trend in other rural communities, and it is because of the hardwork and dedication of everyone involved. “Our new hospital is second to none and it was a very proud moment to be at the opening to see NSW Premier Mike Baird and Health Minister Jillian Skinner officially open the hospital along with NSW Deputy Premier Troy Grant and Orange MP Andrew Gee.” Across the entire Lachlan Health Service, which includes the Forbes and Parkes hospitals, $113.7 million of hospital improvements funding has been spent. Manager Liz Mitchell has overseen this
spending, and she said the ultimate goal was to provide more holistic, patient-centred care. “Our ultimate goal is to improve the health outcomes for our patients,” she said. “We can achieve this with better integration between Parkes and Forbes hospitals using our new and improved facilities and sharing of services.” “This includes the hospital’s Inpatient and Ambulatory Care services (Ambulatory Care includes Community Health, Physiotherapy, Mental Health, Drug and Alcohol Services, Renal and Dental Services) and the hospital and other community health providers such as General Practitioners and non-government organisations.” Ms Mitchell said the people of Forbes could now access the highest level of care, whereas in the past this was not always guaranteed. She added the new facilities and technology would provide an improved patient flow, and more open and brighter spaces. “Now that the new building at Forbes is complete, work has commenced on the refurbishment of our Renal and Ambulatory Care units,” she said. “With new and improved Ambulatory Care facilities at Forbes, we hope patients will see Forbes Hospital as a place that can help them stay healthy and live well, not just a place to visit when you are sick.”

QUESTION of the week Do you thinks Forbes can put on a good show or event?
IMAGE: Red Bend Catholic College is hopeful for another successful year.
Red Bend College Set for Another Successful Year Red Bend Catholic College principal Br Michael Flanagan says the implementation of a number of programs this year should see his school succeed academically once again. His school achieved great results in last year’s HSC, with 12 students picking up 22 band sixes (a mark of above 90) across 14 separate courses, while 52 students collected 150 band fives (a mark between 80 and 90) in 27 courses. While Br Michael said the programs he would implement this year aimed at maintaining high results, he stressed the most important aspect was each student getting the best out of themselves. “Our normal goal is to offer an environment here where kids can learn, to be challenged to learn more, and each is encouraged to do their best,” he said. “They don’t have to get extraordinary results, but they have to get results that are good for them. That’s what we want.” Programs in use at Red Bend this year include teacher educator, blocking students in ability groups, FastforWord, and the parent French course. The blocking students in ability groups system brings students of similar ability into one class, which Br Michael said
would create extra but smaller classes for his school. He believes the blocking students in ability groups system will bring the best out of students who are excelling and those who are developing. “We believe if we can put kids of similar ability together they’ll learn better and people can focus their education of strategies more at one group of kids rather than trying to find a middle all the time when you’ve got a big range of kids,” he said. “It’s particularly important for those who are really bright, but for those who really struggle it’s also important.” “They can move up and down classes as well. They’re not stuck where they are forever.” The FastforWord program, based on neurological science, is computer based, and targets particular areas in students that need intense development. For the first time a teacher educator has been appointed at Red Bend College, a move Br Michael said will improve teacher performance, and as a consequence, student performance. It’s a continual professional development if you like,” he said. By Joshua Matic

Forbes Basketball Association Resurrects The Forbes Basketball Association will rise from the ashes this year and restart competition after 15 years in the wilderness. The re-establishment of the association has been nine months in the making, after a number of now current committee members came together with their children wanting to play basketball. Officials from Basketball NSW attended a meeting with them last year and gave them recognition, and competition is expected to start in the coming weeks. A registration day was held last Saturday where around 40 people registered, and it is hoped the same number will register again this Saturday. Games will be held at the South Circle sports fields basketball courts and age divisions will be 10 years and under, under 12s,
under 14s, under 16s and under 18s. At this stage divisions will depend on player numbers, and there will only be junior teams. Association committee member Gavin Montgomery said competition would run during school terms throughout the year. “We’re going to run a three on three [players on court] competition in the first term before we move to full teams [five on five] in the winter competition in terms two and three,” Montgomery said. The association has received various grants to help kick-start competition, and will spend funding from Member for Orange Andrew Gee’s office to build lights at the basketball courts, enabling night competition. Forbes Super 8’s Go Down to the Wire Forbes Cricket Association President, Wayne O’Neill, was very happy with the attendance at the Super 8’s Cricket Day held last Saturday. Team and player numbers were similar to that of previous years with 21 teams and 200 players enjoying the day. Most of the games were closely contested and played in good spirit and sportsmanship. Many of the teams included younger players with a lot of father/son combinations. O’Neill was pleased to see so many junior players in the 15-16 years age group participate in the day, including his own son who was instrumental in the win which his team had over his father’s side. Well known cricket supporter, George Falvey, did a great job running the competition for the day and was happy to explain how the Super 8 competition operates. Each game consists of 16 overs with
each side bowling eight overs each. A run is worth one point and 10 points are recorded for every wicket claimed. For and against results are taken in consideration when determining ladder positions. Teams played a round robin within the two division on the day, A & B Grade, with the top two teams in each grade playing off in the Grand Final. A couple of late storms did not dampen the spirits of players and PFS defeated One More Again in the A Grade final while Dirty Mike & the Boys took out B Grade over Don’t Blush Baby. A friendly grudge match between Forbes Livestock and Jack & Greenhalgh came down to the last ball with Jack & Greenhalgh needing four runs to win, but they could only manage a single, giving Forbes Livestock the game and the pot, or esky as it was.
