Lest We Forget Forbes Will Remember Them
Forbes will be doing all it can to make sure the ANZAC spirit is alive on Monday, with a full day’s worth of events taking place on Monday. Two marches will take place on the day, with each one starting at the Forbes Services Memorial Club and finishing at the Cenotaph in Victoria Park. The first march will take place just prior to the dawn service at 5.20am, while the second one will start at 10.15am before the mid morning service. Each service will include a wreath laying ceremony, hymns, and speeches from Forbes Mayor Phyllis Miller, the Salvation Army, local schools, and Forbes RSL subbranch President Michael Walker, amongst others. The Reveille and Last Post tunes will also be played at the services. Breakfast will be available after the dawn service at the Services Club, while a luncheon will be held at the Services Club after the morning service.
‘Two Up’ will start in the Services Club auditorium from 2.30pm, and the day will end with the lowering of the flag at the Cenotaph at 5pm. Forbes RSL sub-branch Secretary Trevor Currey said the day would be a big one. “I’ve been organising ANZAC Day here in Forbes for the last 14 years, and I can tell you, ANZAC Day really starts in January,” he said with a laugh. “It’s always a great day in Forbes, and an opportunity for us to reflect on the sacrifices our service men and women have made for us.” Most members of the local RSL are expected to march. Of the 75 members, 16 are World War II veterans, while the rest are made up of Korean, Vietnam, Gulf, Timor, Iraq and Afghanistan veterans.

Allan Bauman
Vietnam War Sapper Alan Bauman has only just permanently moved to Forbes, but he has been marching in the town for a high number of years now. Mr Bauman served in the Australian Army from 1970-1971 for 300 days in the first field squadron. He was a member of the Royal Australian Engineers core, and served in the sub-unit of ‘plant troop’, clearing mines with tanks and other heavily armoured vehicles to gain an upper hand over the Viet Cong. The Plant Troop would also use bulldozers to clear forests so they could see their enemy’s movements clearer. Mr Bauman moved to Forbes from his home city of Melbourne in March this year, but having so many Army comrades based in Forbes, he was been marching in town for many years now. “ANZAC Day is a great time to commemorate all of my comrades in war as well as my relatives before me that have fought for our freedom as well. It’s really a significant day of remembrance,” he said. Mr Bauman endured several months of training before starting his national service, including specialised jungle training. The RAE would send three squads of field engineers into the field and one squad of plant engineers.
For Kerry and Ben the meaning of ANZAC Day has changed for them over the past few years following the enlistment of two of their children in the Australian Armed Forces. “I take more notice of everything than I did previously” Kerry said “and having two children in the army makes me a little nervous as it all seems a little closer to home now”. Her son Jordan has been in the army for 3 years now and is currently at Townsville. He is a Cargo Specialist and has already spent 6 months abroad. Alex has just undertaken a four year posting after her initial 12 months and is part of the Battalion Police in Darwin. Alex is looking to advance her career in the army and is looking into the possibilities of becoming a dog handler. Alex will undertake intense training throughout this year as part of a combined defence force where she will practise and learn the skills needed during active service. Kerry & Ben are very proud of their children and know that they would do everything in their power to protect their country but are hopeful that the atrocities of the wars of our past are never repeated.

Neil Biddle
Forbes RSL sub-branch and Legacy representative Neil Biddle says ANZAC Day is a significant day of remembrance for him. Mr Biddle did two years of national service in the Vietnam War from 1967 to 1969 in the third battalion of the Royal Australian Regiment. He served in the Army for a total of 338 days. But Mr Biddle has a strong family connection to war, having relatives that served in World War II, World War I, and even way back to the Boer War of 1899-1902. He has been marching on ANZAC Day in Forbes since he moved to the town in 1989, and he said he looked upon the day as one of remembrance. “I had a lot of mates with me in Vietnam, and members of my family had been involved in most wars before then,” he said. “I’ve had family members in WWII, WWI and all the way back to the Boer War, so ANZAC Day is really a time to reflect on what we have all accomplished.” Mr Biddle worked in Vietnam as a communications professional, dealing with radio and telephone communications, and worked with the headquarters group on base and out in the field.

Walk To Defeat MND
Forbes’ second Walk to Defeat Motor Nuerone Disease (MND) attracted more than 150 walkers for the event held last Sunday. These numbers were an increase on the inaugural walk held last year and although many of the walkers were locals, fifty of the participants travelled from Orange to attend and participate in the day. Orange resident, Nicky Turner, who has MND, came to Forbes to participate and was excited to see an event of this type held in country NSW. Pat Duncan, the driving force behind the event, was very pleased with the numbers and was grateful to local businesses, including major sponsor Duncan Stockcrates, and volunteers for their generosity and support. Motor neurone disease (MND) is the name given to a group of diseases in which
the nerve cells (neurones) controlling the muscles that enable us to move, speak, breathe and swallow undergo degeneration and die. MND can affect a person’s ability to walk, speak, swallow and breathe and the walk is an opportunity to raise awareness for this disease. MND is a progressive, terminal neurological disease that can strike anyone. There is no known cure and no effective treatment for MND. Each day in Australia two people die from MND, and in addition, two people are diagnosed each day. Kaylah Tulloch was the lucky 1st Prize winner of the raffle which was drawn on the day and walked away with $750 cash. Lyn Henley claimed 2nd Prize and L Talbot took home 3rd.

THUMBS UP/DOWN MAYORAL NOTES We had another 2016-17 budget workshop on Monday night and everyone is working really hard to deliver a balanced budget, which is common practice each year. On Tuesday afternoon I attended a meeting in Sydney with Centroc executives, Local Government Procurement and the president of Local Government NSW in relation to the joint organisation initiative. I will talk more about this meeting in next week’s column. I took part in the Walk to D’Feet Motor Neurone Disease on Sunday and it was very well-attended. MND is such a terrible disease and Pat Duncan and her band of helpers do an amazing job with the organisation of the event. People come from near and far to attend this event and some people had to stay in Orange and drive over that morning as accommodation in Forbes was completely booked out. I also know that because I ended up with a mother and three children from Wollongong staying at my house. Last Wednesday night, Councillors and staff travelled to Wirrinya to meet with residents and we had a great turn out. It was a good opportunity for Councillors to hear the issues the residents are experiencing out there. We also provided those in attendance with an update on the Rural Waste Facilities Option Plan. Council’s Grants Officer Andrew Rawsthorne was also at the meeting to discuss grant funding available to community groups. If you are looking for grant funding for a project or need help with an application, don’t hesitate to make an appointment with Andrew by calling 6850 2327. Have a great week, stay safe and God bless. Mayor, Cr Phyllis Miller OAM

Government Focus on Multi Peril Crop Insurance Just recently the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Agriculture and Water Resources, Barnaby Joyce, announced the Managing Farm Risk Programme. The program recognises the potential for crop insurance to reduce the financial risks caused by drought and other unforeseen events. The $20 million programme will provide one-off rebates to eligible farmers with the associated costs of independent and professional advice on an insurance policy that covers multi-peril risks such as drought, frost, infestation, fire and hail. This programme also extends to cover single peril products such as fire and hail insurance. At present that rebates will provide up to $2,500 dollar for dollar matched funds to eligible farm businesses. Recently there has been an Australian insurer that has released a new calculation formula for Multi-Peril Crop Insurance, which takes into account the average 5 year yield for the individual property and shire. Variables such as water usage and soil type are also taken into account. The eligible farming operation is then able to insure up to 70% of this average yield. Whilst this type of insurance is more expensive than traditional fire & hail coverage, it gives the farming operation an increased coverage over a greater number of events including frost and drought. It also provides financial providers with increased piece of mind over their client’s income streams. Central West Insurance Group is looking forward to learning more about the program and we encourage farming operations to consider their insurance options. Our friendly staff are available to discuss the available crop insurance options to your farming operations.
AT THE BOX OFFICE with Brayden MOVIE REVIEW
The Dressmaker This movie is set in 1951 when a young lady named Tilly Dunnage moves back to her home town Dungatar to live with her mother Molly Dunnage. It is in a hilltop shack close enough to her town for her to hit golf balls through the windows of the main street shops, and having learnt her trade in the great fashion house of Europe, she sets about introducing the local matrons to the joys of haute couture. Soon she discovers this is the home she was sent away from as a child, under doubtful circumstances that saw her impli-
cated in the misfortune of a schoolmate. The next day Tilly went to a Football match and met a young Football Player Teddy McSwiney who shares her passion for love and fashion. Tilly thought by making dresses for the town it would put things straight from her past. One night Tilly and Teddy went out on a date to get to know each other, the date took a turn for the worst. As people say trouble comes in threes and it seems to be following Tilly. This movie will have you on the edge of your seat, keeping you guessing just what will happen next. ***** 5 stars. App To Revive Language Learning
Preschool children in Parkes and Forbes will have an exciting opportunity to learn another language this year using play-based mobile tablet apps. “I’m delighted to announce that the Forbes Learning Ladder, Parkes Bluebird Early Education Centre and Victoria Street Children’s Centre in Parkes have been successful in obtaining a place in the Coalition Government’s Early Learning Languages Australia programme,” Federal Member for Calare, the Hon John Cobb said today. “This means our local children will have the opportunity to experience Chinese, Japanese, Indonesian, French or Arabic languages through apps which are being delivered in selected preschools across Australia. The Parkes Bluebird Early Education Centre was one of the 41 preschools who participated in the trial last year. Centre Manger Rachael Westcott said the children responded to the new way of learning wonderfully. “The children not only practice their words
at the centre during their time on the iPads but also continue using the greetings and familiar words at home with their families”. Mr Cobb said, “The ELLA programme is a great opportunity for our preschoolers to make an early start on becoming familiar with another language and I commend the three providers in Calare for committing to the programme and giving our children this opportunity. The Coalition Government has invested $9.8 million in the languages app to help to revive language study in Australia’s early education centres, schools and universities. Following the success of the ELLA programme and Polyglots apps, the Coalition Government has committed $6 million through the National Science and Innovation Agenda to the development of a similar app focused on inspiring students’ interest in science, technology, engineering and mathematics. For more information about the ELLA programme visit: www.education.gov.au/earlylearning-languages-australia

One of the hardest things about stopping the spread of flu is that people can be contagious a day before experiencing any symptoms. Of course this means we are out and about and unfortunately spreading the virus before anyone knows they are unwell. Influenza is extremely contagious. Studies have shown that influenza might survive for: • An hour or more in the air in enclosed environments • More than 8 hours on hard surfaces such as stainless steel and plastic • Up to 15 minutes if transferred from tissues to hands The number one way to avoid the flu is to be vaccinated. The National Health and Medical Research Council recommends annual influenza vaccination for any person who wishes to reduce the likelihood of becoming ill with influenza. Flu vaccination is strongly recommended for groups such as people aged 65 years or over, pregnant women, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders aged 15 years or older and people with underlying medical conditions. If you belong to one of these groups, see your local GP for a vaccination. Vaccinations are now available at Flannery’s Pharmacy. By allowing patients to access influenza vaccinations through community pharmacy at a time convenient to the patient, we are aiming to improve the vaccination rate of the general population and keep our community flu free. Our accredited pharmacist is available on Mondays and Thursdays for vaccination. Get your flu shot and help save a life today! For every flu shot we admister in our Pharmacy, we will donate a vaccine to Save the children organisation to vaccinate a child against measles. For more information visit www.savethechildren.org.au. Just speak to one of our friendly staff members to book your flu vaccination today.

Sandbags To Be Placed On Rankin Street
Lines will be marked and sandbags will be placed around the crossing at the corner of Templar and Rankin Streets next week as part of the Forbes Shire Council’s plan to upgrade the pedestrian crossing there. Council’s plan will involve bringing the kerbs on either side of the crossing further out into the street. Council may also decide to raise the crossing in order to slow traffic down driving over it, but this is yet to be confirmed. Under the plan, Council also hopes to add three extra car parking spaces near the crossing by bringing the red ‘no parking’ sign further up the street. A State Government grant will fund the project, which has been quoted at $21,850, and must be spent before the end of the current financial year. However the plan came as a surprise to local businesses on Rankin Street, which received a letter just two days prior to Council initially wanting to start work on the project, which was Monday this week. Cahill’s Footwear owner Martin Cahill, whose store is near the crossing on Rankin Street, arranged a meeting between businesses and Council on Tuesday evening, with about 20 people attending.
As a result Council decided to place sandbags as a way of physically marking on the street what they planned to do so local businesses could get a grasp of it, and a follow-up meeting will be held at 5.30pm on Monday May 2. Mr Cahill and Chapter Two staff member Kim Sly said concerns were held mostly for the lack of communication from Council over the matter, but also on the kerb widening making the street too narrow for traffic. Council Acting General Manager Max Kershaw apologised for giving businesses just two days notice, adding it was “unacceptable”.

Wickets Fall For Toby On Bradman Oval Budding cricketer, Toby Hurford, had the great opportunity to play on the oval named after cricket legend, Don Bradman, at the beginning of the school holidays as part of the Lachlan U/14’s Representative team. The Lachlan side comprises of players selected from Cowra, Parkes, Young, West Wyalong and Forbes with Toby honoured as the only Forbes player selected. The recent success of the Lachlan team earned them an invitation alongside teams from Hornsby, Southern Highlands, Dubbo, Wagga and Bathurst to play a round robin competition held at Mittagong and Bowral. Toby claimed a total of nine wickets over the six games played and was rewarded by being awarded with a Don Bradman Commemoratory Coin for most wickets for the Lachlan side. The Don Bradman Museum donated the coins, which were awarded to the player who claimed the most wickets and the most runs in each team. Toby and his family along with other Lachlan team members visited the Don Bradman museum during their time in Bowral and were in the right spot at the right time meeting cricket star, Nathan Lyon. Toby’s father, Troy, was very impressed with Nathan who was only too willing to talk to the boys and sign memorabilia and pose for photos. Nathan was originally from Young

Trevor Currey
Trevor Currey has been the secretary of the Forbes RSL for the last 14 years, and is heavily involved with organising local ANZAC Day ceremonies. He served for the Army in the Vietnam War for 196 days in 1969 in the sixth battalion of the Royal Australian Regiment, in the infantry. He was based in the Phuoc Tuy province of South Vietnam, where Australian forces had responsibility. As part of the infantry Mr Currey went out on bush patrols, which was the method used to hold the Viet Cong back. He worked primarily as a rifleman and forward scout. He said ANZAC Day was all about remembering those who have sacrificed themselves for the freedom of our country. “Like all of the other returned service men I liaise with, for me, ANZAC Day is about remembering your mates, and those who have fought for the beautiful country we are today, he said. Mr Currey will be spending ANZAC Day across each event in Forbes on Monday. He said a lot of effort was put in to making ANZAC Day in Forbes a success, with preparations having started in January.

Brian King
Brian has been marching in the community ANZAC Day street parade for many years and he and son, James, take great pride in wearing the medals which were awarded to his father, Mick King and grandfather, James Cooney. Mick fought in New Guinea while James served at Gallipoli. ANZAC Day is a very emotional day for Brian and his family as they remember the sacrifices their family members and all servicemen and women have made to protect our country and our rights. This year will be particularly difficult as his Uncle, Kevin Cooney, who normally marched with him, passed away last year. Brian will continue to observe the significance of this important day by attending the Dawn Service, visiting the cemetery and being part of the Community March.
