Lachlan Health Service Manager, Liz Mitchell said: “Staff and Health Council members will be on hand during the day to show visitors around the refurbished facility. Is Teeth Whitening For You?

Maybe you’ve always wanted a beautiful white smile. Or your teeth have yellowed over time. Or you’re not happy with the staining that results from drinking coffee and tea. Whatever your reason for wanting whiter teeth, you’re not alone. There are many reasons for whitening your teeth, including: • The boost to your confidence and selfesteem that comes from a great smile • A younger appearance • A special event such as a wedding, job interview or class reunion • To make a positive first impression on others • To simply reverse years of everyday staining and yellowing

People naturally have different shades of tooth colour just like we all have different hair and skin colour. Some teeth are more yellow than others, while others yellow with aging. Your tooth colour can be affected by many factors. • The natural aging process • Smoking, drinking coffee, tea and red wine • Accumulation of plaque and calculus • Ingesting too much fluoride when teeth are forming, which can give teeth a “mot-

tled” look • Trauma to the teeth that may cause a brown, gray or black colour • Discoloured fillings Before beginning any whitening procedure, be sure to consult with your dentist. Only he or she can evaluate whether you’re a suitable candidate for a particular treatment. Now you can whiten your teeth in the comfort of your own home. With customized take-home whitening trays and Opalescence Whitening syringe, great results are achieved simply, comfortably and cost effectively. Forbes Family Dentists are offering custom take home whitening at a Special Price of Only $299. Some conditions apply, call 6851 5505.

A.A.Blatch Cultivates Relationships With Farmers A.A.Blatch in Parkes, founded by Allan A Blatch (senior) in 1952, was recently taken over by Allan A Blatch (junior) and Susie to keep the business in the family for a third generation. Allan and Susie bought out Allan’s parents, Warren and Nancye Blatch, in 2015 after moving to Parkes from England. “Our business is different to many others as we are not just here for a quick sale, but to build relationships with farmers over generations. Many people remember coming here with their grandparents in the 1950s – so we have fifth generation customers,” said Allan. A.A.Blatch is a one-stop shop for bearings and power transmission, and automotive and agricultural spare parts. “Whether it’s a clutch for a header, a diesel engine rebuild kit for a truck, a suspension lift-kit for a Landcruiser or the world’s finest triple-lip bearings for your prized machinery; A.A.Blatch has you covered.” In addition it is an exclusive distributor for Black Bearings by NTN Japan, and Tsubaki chains, as well as an official distributor for premium bearing brands including NTN, Timken-Fafnir and NSK. It is also an official distributor for Gates belts, Fleetguard filtration, Drivetech 4X4, All States Trailer

Mock Crash Produces Hard-Hitting Experience More than 500 Year 10 students from 10 high schools across the Forbes, Parkes and Lachlan Shire Council areas attended this year’s mock car crash demonstration in Parkes last week. Road Safety and Injury Prevention Officer for the Councils, Logan Dolbel, said the demonstration provided valuable insight into the aftermath of a vehicle accident. “The mock crash pre-lessons and car crash demonstration is an important part of our local Road Safety program, aiming to improve the attitudes and behaviours of young drivers and passengers as they start to get their licences and gain experience on our roads.” The event began with a short film showing the moments leading up to an accident; a car full of teens driving home the morning after a party, the driver misjudged a bend and hit a tree. The curtains then pulled back to reveal the car wreck, and the students watched a live actors dealt with the aftermath. A full emergency response involving NSW Police, NSW Ambulance and Parkes SES performed their roles with local youth actors playing the roles of the crash victims. “The actors, emergency services, and all those involved were really excited. Having a live audience really lifts the performance of

our actors and allows them to showcase all their hard work and commitment over the past months, “ said Logan. It is an emotional experience, giving students a unique opportunity to witness a full emergency response. The demonstration is part of the NOT A STATISTIC! Youth Driver Education Program, which has been developed in response to crash data that shows young drivers are over-represented in road crashes across the state. In NSW drivers under the age of 25 hold a relatively small portion of licences, but are involved in a large portion of crashes.

CONTINUE TO PROVIDE SOUND POLICY AND LEADERSHIP FOR THE PEOPLE OF FORBES SHIRE “ In the business of hospitality you get to associate with all ages and walks of life my aim is to always listen and represent the whole community to the best of my ability to make sure Forbes continues to grow, move forward and prosper well into the future” Grant Clifton Authorised by Grant Clifton, 7 Court Street Forbes NSW 2871

DENNIS BOOTH I have learnt a lot on Council in the past four years yet I had previously been a Councillor in Darwin and served on a Council staff for another four years as its Public Relations Manager. I acknowledge the hard work of the two Mayors of the past four years, the late Ron Penny and of course Phyllis Miller, the other Councillors and particularly the hard working staff of the Shire Council.

But it is time to move forward and I believe the next year to two years could be critical for this Council as we know it because we are still not out of the woods re possible amalgamation.

It means we need to grow our town not only in more business opportunities but in population growth and that means seeking out land for developers to plan subdivisions that will show we are intent on growing.

We need to prosper businesses by providing tourism opportunities that will encourage spending in this town not only a half or daily visit as tourists but visitors staying on attending big events that will greatly boost the economy as does the Elvis Festival in Parkes. What Council does need to do more is communicate better with the people and I see no reason why if Council can do an annual report on itself that it cannot do an annual report open to the public in a forum where they can ask questions.

The fact is it is the community who votes in Councillors to represent them and the more transparent you are with them the more likely they are to feel you are doing a good job and have their wholehearted support. So as my How to Vote leaflet says, Council needs to listen, talk and tell the people more!

Council Elections 2016

Meet your Candidates

Vote 1 for a candidate who will always put Forbes first

Vote 1 Graeme Miller

As a lifelong resident of Forbes and a Councillor for eight years, and Deputy Mayor for five years, I understand the vital importance of the Council to the community of Forbes. I’ve got the experience, knowledge, and dedication to fight for a better Forbes for everyone.

• I will listen to the community and respect people’s opinions • I will give leadership with vision • I am progressively seeking to increase industry • I will be financially responsible • I will seek value for ratepayers’ dollars • I will show good governance. Authorised By Graeme Miller 124 Calarie Rd,Forbes,NSW 2871

Vote 1 Grant Neilson Putting Forbes First along with its Ratepayers & Residents The people of Forbes deserve a Council that goes above and beyond for the future of our town. It’s now time for a team that will work together for the benefit of Forbes.

There is an element in the current Council who in my opinion lack the vision and experience to see this town grow and prosper. The town has lost some viable employment opportunities early in this Council’s term. I have served the Forbes Community for a number of years including the P & D (Business Chamber) for 4 years, the SES for 14 years and the MDRA for 4 years. Our town needs further growth and employment opportunities for our youth along with land and housing.

I promise to work for the future of Forbes. Authorised by Grant Neilson, 32 McDonnell St, Forbes

Council Elections 2016

Meet your Candidates Councillor Candidates On Stage

One of the biggest crowds ever turned up for the Meet the Councillor Candidates evening at the Forbes Services Memorial Club on Tuesday night when more than 180 people attended. The evening was organised by the Forbes Business Chamber with Margaret Duggan acting as facilitator. All 17 candidates were present and each person had two and a half minutes to present a case for why they should be elected as a councilor at the Local Government Elections on 10th September. Eight of the candidates are current councilors standing for re-election. The candidates talked passionately about a variety of issues they would focus on with

tourism, economic development, housing, rural and water issues the main ones. There were several promises to work towards a more transparent council that would listen to residents and involve them more in decision making, working on further improvement of medical services, being a voice for the youth, helping people, better internet services, keeping government services in town and long-term employment opportunities for young people. During question time there was a lot of discussion about the importance of attracting smaller businesses to town, selling Forbes as a tree change destination and the need for more local education opportunities.

Vote 1 Brian MATTISKE I am Brian Mattiske. I have lived in Forbes all my life. My family is among the early settlers in the Forbes district. They have been involved in mixed farming since the late 1800’s. My son and I still farm the property my father purchased in the 1940’s. We enjoy being involved in mixed farming and irrigation. I am the only full time farmer nominated for Council fighting for rural issues. I have thoroughly enjoyed being a Councillor on the Forbes Shire Council during the last four years. During this time working as a team we have seen many developments and improvements; • Central West Industrial Park progressing well with all blocks in Stage 1 sold (McClintock, Hutcheon & Pearce and Others.) • Bunnings, Spotlight and Cafe Aglio & Olio opened and attracting customers. • More development in Landrace Street. • New Hospital opened and in use including hard fought for CT scanner. • Expansion of Forbes Medical Centre near completion. • Northern By Pass nearing completion. • Improved ease of obtaining wide load permits.

• Road Train access from Highway to Red Bend Silos completed. • Opening of some roads for B-Doubles and Road Trains with permits. Being a farmer and irrigator, water issues are important to me. • I am very interested in water issues within the Forbes Shire, water being used for irrigation and for mining. With mining we need to work with the mines. We need to remember that the mines could be gone tomorrow. • I will listen carefully to the problems and concerns you have with Council. With your opinions, this Council can give leadership with vision and direction. • For our town to grow we need to actively seek new industries (Commercial, Indutrial and Rural). By attracting these new industries we can create more employment and growth. I have a great passion for our beautiful town and wonderful proactive community. In conclusion I would like to take this opportunity to remind voters...

Am I Normal?

Next week is Women’s Health Week and this year will focus on health, learning more and taking action. Women are great talkers but when it comes to talking about health it becomes a grey area, so this week is all about promoting discussion around specific health issues among women. This year’s theme is Am I Normal? At some stage throughout every woman’s life this question is asked whether it be about size, image, mental health or sex. These questions are completely normal and women should feel comfortable talking about them. During the week there is a free online event as well as other live events across the country to encourage women to talk about these issues and to offer advice to assist women. Jean Hailes have been conducting research to find what women are most concerned about when it comes to their health. A survey of over 3,200 women from all ages revealed these top five issues: • 23% weight management • 17% female specific cancers

• 15% mental and emotional health • 9% menopause • 8% chronic pain With these issues in mind how many can you relate to? The biggest concern is weight management and it’s no wonder with over 11 million women in Australia, more than half of them are overweight. Most of society wants to loose a few kilograms here and there but why aren’t we doing more? Often we all throw out the excuses that we are too busy or too tired, yet exercising gives you more energy and produces endorphins that trigger a positive feeling, according to WebMD. Taking the initial step is the hardest but with this being a top concern for women’s health it is an important issue to tackle. Other issues revealed that only 65% of women don’t have regular sexual health checks. This week serves as a reminder to getting these important check ups done to ensure the overall health of your body. “If a woman is in good health, her family, community and the society around her also benefit,” Jean Hailes said.

9 in 10 women who have breast cancer have no family history Mammograms are important for all women aged 50-74

As the warmer months approach it is time to get into the garden. A few early preparations now will benefit in the long run. Over winter, lawns can be a bit neglected so spring is the perfect time to get them looking great again. It is recommended to rake through your lawn to get rid of any dead growth or debris. This will allow you to see any bare patches that can be fixed. To fill in these spots rake well, sprinkle with grass seeds that have already been mixed up with soil in a bucket, and water well until seed germinates. Pruning is an important part of looking after your plants so get those secateurs out and start cutting. Prune away any dead or damaged branches to allow for new growth to come through. It is important to prune roses and fruit trees before they start to bud to ensure you still have your spring flowers and crops. Planting in spring is a great chance to have a vegetable patch to have pickings for the warmer months. Seeds that are ideal to plant this time of the year are: peas, spinach, lettuce, leeks, tomatoes, carrots, zucchinis and beetroot. A herb patch would also be a great addition to your garden to provide you with those fresh ingredients to toss through any meal. Seeds to plant in your herb patch for this time of the year would be basil, coriander, dill, mint and parsley as they all thrive as we approach summer. Fruits to plant now would be

strawberries and raspberries to allow you to have a good crop in time for Christmas. Flowers to consider planting for those summer colours would be Alyssums, Begonias, Californian Poppy, Celosias, Gerberas and Perennials. With frosts still looming be sure to cover any new plants with a bucket or box to help protect them. Weeding is always a tedious task but it is important to get on top of so that they don’t take over your garden. With all of the rain we have had over the winter months weeds should be relatively easy to pull out now. Once weeding is done lay down mulch as this will help with water conservation, reducing weeds, maintaining soil temperature and adds organic matter to the soil. Mulch should be laid at approximately 3-4 inches and plastic sheeting can be added to the beds to help minimise the emergence of weeds. When adding mulch around fruit trees be sure to keep the mulch a few inches from the trunk to prevent rotting. Gardening not only reconnects you with the earth but has loads of health benefits too, so be sure to get out into the garden this spring. By Taneil Thornberry

My House My Home What Windows Should I Choose?

Building or renovating a house involves many decisions. One of which is choosing the right windows for your house. Here are some pointers to help decide on the ideal windows for all your needs. 1) Which room is the window for? It is a simple question, but necessary to ask before making a decision. Different rooms require different types of windows. Some windows are more suited to particular applications than others. Room design, style and purpose should be considered prior to any final decision.

3) What is your design style? Once you have considered the practical components, you can have fun choosing the design elements. Window design can compliment the overall design of the home. Colour is also an important element. 4) What type of material? There are two main options for windows and doors: aluminium and timber. Material choice often relates to design style. 5) How important is sustainability? Smart window and glass choices can fill rooms with light all year round, and assist with sustainable design and living that can even save you money in the long run. 6) What is the budget? Glassplace can cater to budgets of all sizes. This allows both the budget mindful and those with a bit extra to customize window and door combination for their project. Hopefully these points will help you decide. For more information on the options available visit the Glassplace showroom at 4 Clarke Street, or visit our website at www.glassplace.com.au.

2) How will the room be used? The way in which the room will be used also impacts the decision making process. Function and practicality are equally as important as style. Think about how you will use the space and what you want out of it.

AT THE BOX OFFICE with Brayden MOVIE REVIEW

Me Before You Me Before You is based on the best-selling novel by Jojo Moyes. Louisa Clark is a 26-year-old woman who lives with her middle-class family in a smallish house. Louisa worked at the local butter bun bakery until it was forced to shut down. Desperate to find a job, Louisa becomes a caregiver to Will Traynor, a multi millionaire who became a quadriplegic after a freak accident. Will does everything in his power to ensure Louisa has a hard time settling into her

new job, while he is also trying to come to terms with his life. The movie was good, but there were some scenes that made me sad and cry a lot. I give it 3 stars. This film is rated PG.

Movie tickets for Brayden and a colleague to attend the movies are paid for by the Forbes Phoenix.

NSW Small Winemakers Show celebrated its 25th year of competition with one of the highest medal strike rates. With 548 entries received from 96 small producers that crush a maximum of 500 tonnes annually, the show also saw the largest diversity of wine regions and styles awarded medals in the show’s history. More than half of the entries (51.3%) received a medal - the highest ever recorded at the show – with 6.2% awarded gold, 9.6% silver and 35.5% bronze. The Orange region came out on top winning 4 of the 17 trophies awarded, with the Hunter Valley and South Coast regions winning 3 trophies each. Other regions to win trophies were Mudgee, Riverina, Hilltops, Canberra District and Central Ranges. Once

Netball Night Competition Starting

SUNNY… Milton Cartwright and Garry Collits enjoyed playing golf in the sunshine last weekend.

Golfers Relish The Sunny Weather

Alf Davies and Ron Morris won the A and B divisions respectively of last Saturday’s Individual Stroke event, sponsored by Complete Plumbing. Alf won with a very well-crafted 70 nett. His driving was nearly immaculate every time. Brian Doyle was unlucky to be runner-up, being shifted into second spot by virtue of a count back. In the B division, it was also a close event with Ron taking the honours with a nett 71, followed by Geoff Drane with nett 72. Ron was his usual tidy scorer, while Geoff Drane played like a resurgent demon possessed with magical skill. The scores were higher than expected given the good conditions with a field of 45 players enjoying their wander around the course. The ball sweep went to 74 nett on count back, being given to those above plus: 71 – P Nixon; 72 – R Nixon; 73 – T Cogswell, P Pymont, B Parker; 74 – L O’Connor and B Squires. The NTP’s went to: 9th – A Davies; 18th – D Culley. Neither got their ‘2’, but Alf scored a lovely ‘2’ on the 3rd, by chipping in. Overall there were only four 2’s. Sunday’s Stableford Medley, played in

balmy conditions with dollops of warming sunshine, was won by Libby Godden with 38 points from a field of 12 players. Jill Cripps finished as runner-up with 37 points, on count back from three other players. The NTP’s went to: 9th B Drabsch and 18th L Godden. Neither managed a ‘2’, and nor did anybody else. The ball sweep went to 37, and was picked up by Ray Taylor, Scott Kirkman and Craig Barrett, who all played in the same group. With some good weather of recent weeks, there were finally enough cards returned to sort out the Winter Individual Comp. These results cover the period from 10th July to 28th August, just showing how difficult it has been. The eventual winner was Bede Tooth with 34 nett, and this achieved on a day that did not assist him with sunshine or balmy conditions. Balls go to Stuart French (35), Ethel Coombs (36) and Fran Smith (37). Daniel will be running a Junior Golf Camp on 28th and 29th September in the school holidays. Contact him on 6851 1554 for details. By Short Putt

Players looking for teams, or teams looking for players should contact Secretary, Lyn Ford on email secretary.forbesnetball@ gmail.com There is half a team of ladies who are playing mixed and would like to play in the ladies competition. Anyone interested should contact Lyn. All nominations must be in by tomorrow. Ladies may play in both mixed and ladies competitions. Times for rounds are at 6, 7, and 8pm every Wednesday night, except through the school holidays when no competition is played. Players wanting to register for 2016, and need assistance should contact Registrar Kerrie Priest. Any player who is already registered with NNSW will only need to pay the $40 competition fee per player per team. Players must be attending secondary school as minimum age, to open ladies and men.
