Come Hell or High Water, The Forbes Show Was Fun

While Forbes was almost turned into an island last weekend by floodwaters, the town’s community spirit was not dampened for the 141st show. The first female president of the Forbes P.A. & H Association, Jan Facey, said although numbers were down by about half a lot of people got out in the rain and wet. “We are quite happy and grateful for the support, and would like to thank everyone who joined in the fun.” One of the highlights this year was the new entertaining Show Mow event, which became extra spectacular with so much mud around. According to Jan, Show Mow consists of a club of people who travel around the country to race at shows on their

lawn mowers. Although entries in the different categories were unfortunately down, because of people flooded in, entries were of a high quality. Only the cooking category budged the trend with a lot more entries. One of the show’s major events, the ring events, had to be postponed to the Spring Horse Show on the weekend of 22nd and 23rd October, when the dog high jump and yard dog display will also take place. The dairy cattle judging could also not take place and will now be on Monday. Jan said she was happy not to be stuck in the show office this year. “It was a real treat to get out and talk to people. The feedback has been very positive.”

MAYORAL NOTES At the time of writing this column, the declaration of the Forbes Shire Council election is this morning. Which also means the first Council meeting and the election of the Mayor has been postponed until later in the month. We will keep you updated when this meeting will be. We have had a lot of road closures due to the flooding over the past week and I know that it has been difficult for those affected, but please remember under no circumstances can Council allow people to travel through closed roads. The Forbes Show on Friday and Saturday was a fantastic event despite the wet weather. Our council stand won the Forbes PA&H Association Best Commercial Display – Outside for the second year in a row, which was great. Thanks to everyone who stopped in at our stand while at the show. From September 26 to 30, Council is running its scrap metal, organics and bulky waste clean-up. This service is for all Council residents who are currently receiving a

Dear Editor While I was riding around the paddocks wallowing in self-pity, awaiting the floodwaters to arrive, I was convicted of my selfishness. Although I was somewhat pleased to have the day off work because of floodwaters, I was reminded of the dedication and commitment of the teachers and staff of Bedgerabong school. A day off school whoopee – no not for them at all. Phone calls were constantly being made to ensure the school could and would be operational. Arrangements were being made to ensure staff could be transported from Forbes to Bedgerabong through floodwaters just for the Bedgerabong children to proceed as usual with their learning! What a slap in the face! Where was my commitment? Where was my dedication? I would like to thank and give a massive thumbs up to the teachers and staff at Bedgerabong school for everything they do. They are absolutely amazing. Katy Brown

A New Shopping Experience Bernardi’s Marketplace in Forbes will undergo exciting changes over a four week period to provide an enhanced shopping experience for customers. “After a great deal of market research and valuable feedback from customers, we have started making some changes to our supermarket,” said Joseph Bernardi, CEO of Supermarkets. The refurbished store will have a bigger focus on fresh produce, sourced locally from the Central West as much as possible, an enhanced bakery with freshly baked sourdough bread, cakes and pastries, new Grab & Go lunch options and a new range of bulk wholefoods. “We want to give Forbes shoppers more reasons to shop local,” said Joseph. “In our experience, when locals purchase more of their groceries in town it has a positive knock on effect for a lot of other small businesses.” A range of new brands of healthy and specialty foods, as well as locally sourced products, will also be entering the store in October. New and interesting products will be added to the Everyday Low Price program. Regular customers would have noticed some changes already with corrugated iron and timber added at the entrance and inside the store. The finished product will give the store a barn feel.

As part of the upgrade, the group will also launch a new Community Benefits program with $6,000 awarded to three local community groups. Applications are open until 30th September. The successful recipients will be announced at the launch of the new store in late October. Application forms are available from sarah@bernardigroup.com. au. Most of the work is being done after hours to minimize disruption to customers as much as possible. “I sincerely apologise for any inconvenience caused during the fit-out, but we promise any disruption will be well worth the final result,” Joseph said.

Attention Land Purchasers!

More Red Tape has been put in place by the Office of State Revenue as from 21st June, 2016 in respect of Residential Land purchases. Identifying transfers to foreign nationals so as governments may impose additional Duties and Taxes on foreigners is the reason for the new rules. Foreign nationals will have to pay 4% extra on the normal stamp duty applying to residential land. Land Tax Surcharge on Foreign nationals also applies at .075% of the value of the land and there is no threshold. It also seems that Land Tax (which is levied annually) may also be payable by existing residential lands held by foreign nationals. Exemptions apply to Australian Citizens, some New Zealand Citizens and Foreign nationals who have resided in Australia for 200 days or more in the last 12 months provided they complete an 8 page form. The ‘Purchaser Declaration’ form needs to be completed on entering a Contract for the purchase of residential land so as to obtain an exemption from these Duties and Taxes. Australian Citizens will need to provide a copy of an Australian Birth Certificate or Passport or Citizenship Certificate. Kiwis will require their passport and a special category visa and long term foreign nationals will need to provide evidence of their residing in Australia for 200 days or more. Corporations will need a lot more paper work to obtain an exemption or partial exemption. All-in-all, the bureaucrats are putting more obstacles in front of purchasers of land and you need to be guided through this maze by your solicitor. For further information contact Matthews Williams Solicitors and Conveyancers.

FORBES SPORT Comeback Year For Platypi Ends At Grand Final

WE ARE THE CHAMPIONS... The Forbes Magpies celebrate their 26 - 22 victory in the grand final against the Dubbo CYMS on Sunday.

Grand Victory For Underdog Magpies

The Forbes Magpies put in an incredible performance to come from behind and win the Group XI Rugby League grand final in Dubbo 26 – 22 on Sunday. Taking on Dubbo CYMS, who have been undefeated for two seasons, was a daunting task for the Mapgies, but coaching coordinator Cameron Greenhalgh said this diasadvantage only ramped up the players’ enthusiasm. “We were massive underdogs going in, but we knew that we had the side, we had the belief that we could win,” Greenhalgh said. With 12 minutes to go, CYMS had pulled

out to a 10 point lead, but two tries in the final minutes gave Forbes the impressive victory. Acknowledging that Forbes is sporting a very young team this year, Greenhalgh said it was difficult to single out top performers. “Our captain-coach Jake Grace won the Bob Weir Medal for man of the match, and he certainly led by example. “They were all excellent. They’re a young team, but have great confidence and big game performance,” Greenhalgh said.

each on different holes, and Doug Churchill scored two 2’s, also on separate holes. Forbes Gold Club is taking part in Australia Golf Month in October when everyone can give golf a go. The 2016-17 Summer Sixes competition will begin competitive play in the week of 10th October. The GolfNSW Open Regional Qualifier, played over 36-holes, is set for 8th and 9th October. Tomorrow we will attempt to run the Daine Doolin Memorial 4-BBB Stableford alongside the Cahill sponsored 4-BBB Stableford competition. Sunday 18th is the Stableford Medley, plus the Parkes Open. Saturday, 24th September is a 4-Ball Ambrose sponsored by Alby Callaghan, and Sunday 25th the Stableford Medley.

Saturday’s scheduled event, the Daine Doolin Memorial, was postponed yet again. However, Golf Pro Daniel organised the Inaugural Par-3 Aqua Golf Medley competition - a 6-hole, Par-54 layout utilising unorthodox tee positions to selected holes. Fifteen golfers rose to the challenge, proclaiming the event a most enjoyable and successful venture. The Scratch winner was Peter Dawson with 56. The Handicap winner was Jill Cripps, with nett 45. The Handicap runner-up was Bob Borger with 46, getting there on count back. The ball sweep went to 47 nett, being picked up by: 46 – B Drabsch and 47 – P Barnes. The NTP’s went to 9th- P Dawson and 18th - M Collits. There were eleven 2’s scored. Ecky Dawson scored three 2’s,

The Forbes Platypi Rugby Union team will travel to Orange tomorrow to take on the Emus after securing a grand final spot in the Blowes Clothing Cup. Forbes lost to Orange Emus two weeks ago in the major semi final, but vowed to be back for the grand final. They won their place after a muddy war of attrition against the Bathurst Bulldogs last week 18-9. The game was moved to Spooner Oval to avoid the encroaching floodwaters, and Forbes held up better in the muddy conditions to dominate defence and kept Bathurst try-less. The Bulldogs had so far experienced two tough wins in the two weeks prior, and while they managed to kick three penalties, they couldn’t crack the Platypi defence for a try. Saturday’s grand final will cap off a stunning comeback year for Forbes, who last year only won two games all season. The Forbes players are expecting to see a mass of blue and white at Endeavour Oval in Orange on Saturday to support the team. First grade kick off is 3.15pm. By Cindy Nutley

Forbes Touch Association

The Forbes Touch season will run for nine weeks from Monday, 10th October in the same time slots at 6pm, 6.30pm, 7pm and 7.30pm. The semi-finals will be played on 5th December and the grand finals on 8th December for all grades. Go to the Forbes Touch Facebook page to find the registration link to complete registrations online by 12pm on 4th October. All fees are due by the end of the second week of the competition. The fees are: family $35 for the first child and $30 for any other siblings; mixed, men’s and women’s - $500 per team. Primary school aged players can register a team with adult players included. No more than two adults are allowed to play on the field at a time and they cannot score. At the AGM on 5th September, Charles Dwyer was re-elected in the president’s role with Daniel West. The rest of the committee are Mel and Stephen West, Lara Dwyer, Ash Hogan, Jarred and Hannah Nicholson and the Morrison girls.

Spring Rural Sales Perfect Time To Sell Rural Properties In almost 20 years of selling Rural Properties throughout the Central West, Ainslie Toole of Landmark Harcourts, Forbes has never seen a better time to sell. “How often do we see in our lifetime a season like this with strong commodities and the lowest interest rates in recorded history?” These factors have increased sales of all rural properties. This has led to a shortage of listings and a lift in prices achieved. “We are encouraging vendors to seriously consider auctioning to ensure the best price is achieved.” The strong outlook in cattle and sheep

markets has seen domestic buyers expanding and investors seeking alternative opportunities with agriculture an attractive option. A lower Australian dollar typically lifts commodity prices. Combined with low interest rates and free trade agreements with Japan, South Korea and China will lead to an increased demand for agribusiness enterprises. We are now listing our Spring auctions, so call to ensure you capitalize on these positives. If you want to sell it is important to choose an agent with local experience and affordable national and international marketing options.
