Council Sets Example With New Female To Male Ratio
The newly elected Forbes Shire Council has four women and four new faces. The results were confirmed earlier this week following the Local Government election held on 10th September. The councillors are in order of the position they were elected in starting at number one Phyllis Miller, Grant Clifton, Steven Karaitiana, Susan Chau, Graeme Miller, Jenny Webb, Michele Herbert, Chris Roylance and Jeff Nicholson. Five councillors were re-elected and the first time councillors are Steven Karaitiana, Susan Chau, Jenny Webb and Michele Herbert. “I look forward to working with the new council,” said Danny Green, General Manager of the Forbes Shire Council. “The mix of female to male councillors is an example for our more senior government sectors and together with the introduction of four new
councillors will provide a good representation from the community. “A new council is timely as we consult the community on the long term direction they would like to set, and we shape the organisation to achieve this.” “I congratulate all unsuccessful candidates on their conviction in nominating and our retiring councillors for their efforts during their term,” said Danny. The voter turn out was 81.67% with 5,738 votes counted out of 7,026 enrolled voters in the shire. The election of the Mayor and Deputy Mayor positions will take place on Thursday September 29. At the start of the meeting, all Councillors will take an oath of office or make an affirmation of office as part of changes to the Local Government Act. The Mayor will be elected for a two year term.

Newly Created Prostate Cancer Support Group The newly created Forbes Prostate Cancer Support Group will be offering support to those suffering with prostate cancer. Approximately 11 people attended the first meeting last Thursday, following a prostate cancer awareness forum that was held at the Forbes Services and Memorial Club earlier this month. Dennis Booth was elected chairperson of the group. “The purpose of the Forbes Prostate Cancer Support Group will be to provide support and information to prostate cancer sufferers and their families,” he said. “We have members who have been through prostate cancer and are there to help anyone going through the same thing.” The group has already gathered significant support from the Forbes Diggers Swimming Club who named the group its charity for the year and donated $500 to get the committee off the ground. “We’re extremely grateful to the Forbes Diggers Swimming Club for their donation,” said Dennis. Prostate cancer is a major mens’ health issue, accounting for 25 per cent of male cancers and 13 per cent of all male cancer deaths. The committee will meet on a regular basis and anyone with an interest in prostate cancer is invited to attend, including wives, partners and families. The group’s next meeting will be at the Forbes Youth and Community Centre on Thursday, 13th October at 5.30pm. For further information contact Forbes Shire Council’s Community Relations Officer, Blake Nicholson on 6850 2355.

New Dragon Boats To Grace Lake Forbes
Very early one Sunday morning the calm waters of Lake Forbes were high and shrouded with light fog. Seven eager members of the Forbes Dragon Boat Club were waiting for a truck to turn the corner… a truck carrying two longawaited, new racing dragon boats. Past president, Bill Thomas, and past Treasurer, Claire Davis, were among the eager onlookers to witness the Forbes Dragon Boat Club change from its almost three decades old boats to much lighter, sleeker, modern racing boats. As the truck rumbled into sight, a buzz went through the little group and cameras began clicking. The boats were unloaded with great enthusiasm and carefully set in their new home. Many delighted phrases rang out like: “Wow! We have foot-rests.”, “They have handles! We can move them so much easier!” and “They’re so much lighter.” The club is ready for the next paddling session and can hardly wait to get them in the water. “The boats have come about due to the hard work of our previous board and we thank them once again, especially Bill and Claire,” said President Robyn Stephens. The club is set to go from strength to
strength with a very committed new board: Robyn Stephens, president; Tony Fisher, vice-president; Michael Green, treasurer; Kristine Dobell, registrar; Chris Sweeney, publicity officer; Ian Prince, works co-ordinator; Neil Stephens, board member and Warren Edwards, secretary. If you would like to join our club or find out more about it come along on Sunday mornings at 8:30 - the water recedes - and 6:30 Thursday evenings in daylight-saving time. You can find us on Facebook. It’s a great sport and a great club. You are most welcome to come along!

AT THE BOX OFFICE MOVIE REVIEW
Jason Bourne
Jason Bourne is the fifth chapter in the action-packed Bourne film series with The Bourne Identity (2002), The Bourne Supremacy (2004), The Bourne Ultimatum (2007) and The Bourne Legacy (2012). With Jason retired, he settles into a peaceful life. It is not long before Nicky Parsons, a young hacker, brings Jason back from retirement to uncover the truth of the Tradestone project, which contains the details of what really happened to Jason’s father, Richard Webb. The CIA director Robert Dewey fears for Jason’s return and he assigns CIA agent Heather Lee and an assassin known as Asset to prevent Jason from uncovering their secrets. As Jason continues to uncover his past, Heather tries her best to protect him from being locked up in jail. It is a good movie and the action stunts and visual effects were outstanding. I would like to see it again. I give it 4 stars.
Everyone is welcome!

NDIS Here In July 2017
More than 40 families and carers of people with disabilities, as well as local service providers, attended a session on the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) in Forbes last week in preparation for its rollout in the Central West in July next year. The NDIS is a ground-breaking change to the way disability services are funded and delivered. “It is the largest social reform since the introduction of Medicare,” said presenter Helen Riordan, Community Engagement Manager for the NDIS. Little Learners House With No Steps (HSNW) Early Intervention invited Helen to give community members from Parkes, Forbes, Condobolin and Dubbo an opportunity to learn more about the NDIS. Helen said the NDIS would replace all state-based funded disability schemes with an increase of funding from $8 billion to $22 billion per year. “People will have a lot more control as it is very flexible with more choice and control over who you choose to provide support,” said Helen. She added the old scheme was crisis driven, while the NDIS put supports in place to not get to a crisis. “The aim is to help people to live a regular life.” Leanne Allegri, Area Manager for Western NSW for HWNS, said funding would be al-
located on an individual basis. After you’ve checked if you are eligible for individual support from the NDIS, the first step is to start planning. “One of the most important steps”, Helen said, “was to prepare very well for the planning meeting in order to get the best plan.” Once you have a plan in place and have chosen supports, you can choose how your funds are managed with an option for self-managing. Support will be given throughout life. Go to www.ndis.gov.au or ndis.nsw.gov. au for more information about connecting to services. By Maggi Barnard

Living andLifestyle Waiting For The Stork I think the process of being pregnant and waiting to embark on the biggest journey of your life, is one of the most amazing experiences. It is a rollercoaster ride filled with moments of intense excitement combined with levels of fear and extreme trepidation about the arrival of such a special package without care instructions attached. Coupled with all this excitement and anxiety is the long list of things that need to be done to prepare your life for this mammoth change in priorities. I would like to make the process somewhat easier by helping you to create a special nursery. There are a few key factors you need to incorporate into your design. The space has to be restful and inducive to sleep so both your baby and you can get a good night’s sleep. Think window treatments that will block out all light, day or night to not disturb your baby. You need a sensational chair to sit in and bond with your child during the earlier months. It will give you a great spot to do night time feeds and to enjoy long hours of snuggling together and later on sharing a story together. Paint the room in soft tranquil colours at first and add bolder splashes of colour as they grow older. There are also many sensational wall hangings or art decals that can easily be removed and replaced when the need arises that may save some painting work.
FIT
Storage is absolutely key to making sure the room stays tidy. Large bookshelves or display units can be decorated with storage baskets that will ensure all the objects you will need regularly are on tap but not on display. Storage shelves are also great for displaying presents and photos you will start collecting. Floorcoverings are important to make the room cosy and warm. Invest in a large rug as having a softer surface underfoot will muffle noise and make the space more conducive to sleeping. I think the arrival of a new person in my life was the most monumental event and I would like to share some wisdom with you. Just relax and be prepared to learn as you go. Give yourself the chance to master this new role without judging yourself. Sleep whenever you can and most importantly take the time out to bond and cuddle this beautiful baby that you have created because time will just fly by. If you can enjoy each stage of your baby, your life will be enriched. By Karen Creith Director Parkes Furniture One

FLANNERY’S Pharmacy
DON’T LET ALLERGY SEASON GET YOU DOWN!
Three million Australian adults (15% of the population) struggle through spring and summer with watery eyes, running nose, itchy throat and the hallmark hay fever symptom, sneezing. Hay fever can have a profound effect on our ability to function normally but there are products to help prevent and alleviate symptoms. Here are some tips for beating hay fever so you can enjoy spring. • Smear petroleum jelly (like Vaseline) inside your nose when you are outdoors: this helps trap pollen and stops it reaching the inner lining of your nose. • Stay indoors as much as possible: especially after midday in spring when the pollen count forecast is high, and on windy days or after thunderstorms. • Wear sunglasses and frequently splash your eyes with water: this will help protect your eyes from irritation and flush out any pollen. • Stay away from parks and gardens while lawns are being mowed: if you can’t avoid this, wearing a mask may help, if practical. • Shower after playing sport and other outdoor activities: to rinse off any pollen you’ve been exposed to. • Use re-circulated air in the car: especially when pollen levels are high, or keep the windows closed. Talk to the Pharmacists or specialist team at Flannery’s Pharmacy about your symptoms to work out the best treatment for you. They may suggest you try different medicines or a combination before you find what works best. It’s a good idea to seek advice when choosing a medicine for hay fever because there are many products.

Charlie One Step Closer To His Dream! Year 10 student Charlie Staines took a step closer to achieving his dream this week when he signed a two-year NRL Player Development contract with the Penrith Panthers Rugby League Club. NRL talent scouts have been watching Charlie for some time and the offer came after recommendations based on the skills and abilities Charlie has displayed in both club and representative football competitions. Charlie will continue his schooling at Forbes High School for the next twelve months. The Panthers will assist with costs associated with any representative football he is involved in including the Western Rams and Country NSW. He will be provided with strength and conditioning, diet and training programs to further develop his talent over the year at which time he will be considered for a pre-season program in preparation for the inclusion in the Under 18 squad and possible relocation to Sydney. Charlie attended and participated in training camps with the Cronulla Sharks and Canberra Raiders this year too. He and his family are taking everything in their stride, but they are excited by the prospects the signing will bring in the future. Charlie will compete with his local team, the Forbes Junior Magpies U16’s, in the grand final of the local competition in a couple of
weeks before flying to Samoa to fulfil his representative commitments with the NSW Country side on the long weekend in October. By Anita Morrison

Forbes’ Betland Brothers Make History By winning the SCT Logistics Parkes Open Golf Tournament on Sunday, Forbes golfer Steve Betland joined his brother John as the only brothers to record victories in this event. The tournament unfortunately lost some of its lustre as rain curtailed the championship to an 18-hole endurance test with players battling soggy fairways and consistent rain and a cold northerly breeze. Steve’s score of 69 was one ahead of tournament favourite and runner-up Mark Hale from Mudgee. In Forbes on Saturday’s scheduled event, the Daine Doolin Memorial in conjunction with the Cahill 4BBB was once again postponed and the competition reverted to an Individual Stroke Medley. The eventual nett winner was Peter Barnes, with 67. The Runner-up was Shane Sallaway. The ball sweep went to 72 nett on count back, being picked up by: 67 – A Callaghan; 68 – P Maher; 69 – G Drane; 70 – R Morris, S Kirkman, F Donohue; 71 – R Nixon, M Haley, E Coombs; 72 – G Newport. And the NTP’s went to – Round 1 18th: P Barnes; Round 2 18th: G Newport. By Short Putt
Thousands In Prizes For Forbes Fashions It’s becoming one of the highlights of the Forbes social calendar and it’s now just weeks away. The Forbes Spring Races will be held on Saturday 8 October and organisers are expecting thousands to frock up and flock to the track. The races feature a five race program with full TAB and bookmaker facilities on track. For the punters the day coincides with one of the highlights of the Melbourne Spring
Carnival, the Caulfield Guineas. But it’s not the races that bring most people to the track. The Forbes Spring Races will again feature a massive Fashions on The Field prize pool. “In the last few years we’ve had about $4000 in prizes for Fashions on the Field,” said Forbes Jockey Club Secretary Blake Nicholson. “We’re expecting it to be around that again so make sure you dress to impress.” Cate-
gories in the fashions include Most Elegant Lady, Cutting Edge, Junior, Tiny Tot and Best Dressed Gent. Local Adam Enslow will be entertaining on the day and free marquee sites are available for those who want to get a group together and head to the races. Find Forbes Spring Races on Facebook or call Blake Nicholson on 0439 911 052 for more information.
