LOVE AND HEARTBREAK… A farming couple from Forbes who have lost at least 80% of their farm to flooding, walk through their drowning mustard crop.
Isolation And Losses Haunt Flooded Farmers
The Forbes floods were big news nationally and internationally last week, however once the headlines stopped many people forgot about those still suffering. One farmer from Forbes, Brad Shephard is using his love of flying and photography to bring awareness of the devastation and isolation of people on farms by posting regularly on Facebook. “There are lots of sad stories out there,” Brad said, who has lost 80 to 90% of his barley and wheat crops. “Unfortunately these floods are a long way from over and in some areas will linger on for months. Floods can be just as bad as droughts.” As a survivor of depression, Brad said he had noticed as a result of the horror of the floods, people were showing signs of the
onset of depression. “If you’re not feeling right, you’re tired or low, not sleeping well, talk to a mate or family member and seek help,” he posted, and offered some tips to help people feel better. Brad said he had many people talking to him about the isolation and loss of crops. “People have lost hundreds of thousands of dollars of income with no likelihood of getting that back for at least another 12 months.” More assistance has come to the community with the Australian Taxation Office announcing help by fast tracking tax refunds for people affected by floods, and offering additional time to lodge income tax returns. COUNCIL COMMENTS Last Thursday we had our first meeting with the newly elected Council and our Mayoral Election. I am very privileged to be your Mayor and I look forward to working with the Councillors, Council staff and the community for the next two years. Our first Council meeting was very productive and we had good discussions surrounding our Section 355 Committees. All Councillors contributed, which was very pleasing to see. We also had a briefing on some exciting development potential for the town. On Sunday morning, the Deputy Mayor, Councillor Grant Clifton and I inspected the floodwaters in the Forbes Shire. There is still a lot of water flowing and from the air we could see a lot of crop damage. We really feel for the farming community and the losses they have experienced. All of the agencies involved with the flood response and recovery are working tirelessly to respond to the needs of the community and are doing a wonderful job. Information on the assistance available in response to this disaster is available at disasterassist.gov.au and emergency.nsw. gov.au. On Tuesday, Minister for Roads, Maritime and Freight, the Hon Duncan Gay MLC visited Forbes to inspect our roads, including sections of the Newell Highway that have been affected by floodwater. Once the water recedes, we will know exactly how much damage has been done. I know some of our roads have been closed for quite some time and we appreciate your patience as we wait for the water to recede. Mayor Graeme Miller

New Mayor And Deputy Mayor For Forbes
Forbes has a new Mayor after Councillor Graeme Miller was elected at the first meeting of the newly elected Council last Thursday. Former Mayor, Councillor Phyllis Miller, who was the first person elected to the council, contested the position. There were also two nominations for the position of Deputy Mayor with Councillor Grant Clifton winning the vote over Councillor Jeff Nicholson. “This is a great privilege which I will treat with 100% respect,” said Councillor Miller after his election. Councillor Clifton said he was humbled to be in the position as he had not been on the Council very long. “I appreciate all the support and will do my bit to support Graeme.”

QUESTION of the week Mosquitoes could also present a risk. “Residents should cover up as much as possible and apply repellent every couple of hours if outdoors,” the Mayor said.
Floods around Forbes as seen from the air. (photo: Brad Shephard)
Pool opens tomorrow: The opening of the Forbes Town Pool had to be delayed by a week due to flooding in the Shire last week. Access to the pool was difficult because of the floodwater, and the delay was necessary to give Council time to complete the clean-up before the opening. Floodwater health hazards: Forbes Shire Council is warning residents to be alert to potential health hazards associated with floodwater. Floodwater can be affected due to overflows of sewage and chemical contaminates that can cause illness or infection. Residents should avoid any unnecessary contact with floodwater or mud. Mayor Graeme Miller said it was especially important that children did not play in floodwater. Always wear gloves when handling flood affected items and wash hands thoroughly after participating in clean-up activities. Any cut or abrasion should be treated with antiseptic and covered immediately. If a wound develops any redness, swelling or discharge, seek immediate medical assistance. If you develop severe diarrhoea or vomiting, seek immediate medical assistance.
Friday 7 October 2016 Page 3
Waste collection: Forbes Shire Council has organised special waste collection arrangements until floodwaters recede. For flood affected residents, the service will resume as soon as trucks can access properties. Some delays in garbage collection are being experienced due to road closures. Residents are asked to leave their bins on the kerb until they can be collected. Individual collections for severely flood effected properties may be organised with Council on a case by case basis. The annual Bulk Waste Clean-Up started on Monday, and another pick-up has been scheduled for the week beginning Monday, 24th October. This will give residents the opportunity to dispose of any items damaged during the flood. For more information or questions, please call the Environmental Services and Planning Department on 6850 2344. Softball season: Registration day and social game on 13th October 6 – 7:30pm at Forbes Golf Club fields. Games to be played at same time every week. Fees are $80 for adults and $60 for juniors. Register as team or as an individual. Contact Isabel Haley on 0428 139 360, or forbessoftball@ yahoo.com.au Forbes Community Safety Art Competition: The competition is open to students from Forbes and Bedgerabong. K-6 theme is community safety in your neighbourhood and 7-12 theme is raising awareness about domestic violence/ positive relationships. Artworks can be digital, painting, drawing or other medium. Competition closes 21st October.
What are your thoughts on the results of the Forbes Mayoral election?
Gordan Hurry: Overall the results are good due to the system, but I don’t necessarily agree with the system. In my opinion the first person past the post with votes from the people should be mayor.
Andrew Norton-Knight: I thought that both candidates were worthy of the job. Phyllis has been doing a good job but I can’t see why Graeme will not do equally as well. The community voted the counsellors and the majority of them had support for Graeme. If they all work together as a team they will achieve great things for the community.
John Cole: I was a little surprised by the results as I thought Phyllis may have retained her seat. Phyllis has done a great job but I expect the new mayor will continue to work to achieve the best results for the community.

Tyreright Celebrates lst Birthday Known as Tyreright Forbes, Jamie Walsh and his team have had an amazing, and challenging year in the first 12 months in business. When Jamie started the business, he had one employee, Ben Faber, and with his partner Natalie, they have all supported each other to make the business what it is today. The business is constantly growing and expanding, and now services not only the local Forbes area, but also towns within a 200km radius, including Wyalong, Condobolin, Euabalong, Bogan Gate, Gooloogong, Cowra and all places in between. Now the business has what is called a Rapid Response Unit, which is designed to assist the team meet the varying needs of their customers and respond in a quicker timeframe. This consists of a 4WD with a service body and they can now get to places other vehicles can’t. In addition, Tyreright has grown the mechanical side of its business, to include basic vehicle services, brake checks or upgrading of suspension in all vehicles. Tyreright can also provide a vehicle registration check, so Tyreright is now essentially a ‘one stop rego shop’, enabling customers to get everything done on their vehicles under the one roof.
The team at Tyreright are from the left Rylie Stevenson, Sharalee Butler, Ben Faber and Jamie Walsh.
With the recent flooding in and around Forbes, and the predicted wet harvest for the summer, Tyreright has once again adapted to meet the needs of their rural customers. They have sourced and can now supply Clip-On Duals for all headers to help make the wet harvest ahead a bit easier and more of a reality. If you are thinking that you will need these for harvest, get
in early and give Jamie and the boys a call to order. The benefits are that they will increase your tractor’s footprint and traction and give extra floatation, reducing ground pressure in soft or boggy conditions, with less damage to crops and pasture. Tyreright is a Finalist in Excellence in Business Ethics for the Forbes Business Chamber Boscar Awards.

Meet Your Local
Councillors
Deputy Mayor, Cr Grant Clifton
Mayor Graeme Miller
Cr Susan Chau
CR GRAEME MILLER
CR GRANT CLIFTON
CR SUSAN CHAU
Cr Graeme Miller is the Forbes Shire Council’s new Mayor. He has 8.5 years of services as Councillor and another five years as Deputy Mayor. Cr Miller has been a lifelong resident of Forbes being a farmer most of his life. When he moved to town in 2001 he became involved in community organisations and a board member of the Australian Livestock Market Association. As Mayor he aims to include Councillors in everything regarding the operation of Council and to keep them informed. When meeting with developers he wants to involve the Deputy Mayor, General Manager and any other Councillor who could make a contribution. Cr Miller is looking forward to the finalisation of the 355 committees that would allow community members to give input into Council matters. “In my role as Mayor I see myself as a generation change as we have wonderful new Councillors who will be the leaders in future.”
Cr Grant Clifton is the new Deputy Mayor. He is looking forward to working closely with the Mayor and other Councillors to achieve the goals that have been set by the previous Council and help to adopt new business for the future of the Forbes community. One of Cr Clifton’s goals is to strengthen new and existing small businesses as the backbone of employment and growth. “As a business operator of a hotel I see a lot of people coming through to get a good gauge of what the community needs and how best to employ strategies through Council to achieve these goals.” Tourism will be a major part of Cr Clifton’s focus areas and with his involvement in a major music festival he has seen tourism provide capital, growth and employment for the economy. Coming from a farming background, Cr Clifton understands the needs of farmers and aims to look after their requirements.
Cr Susan Chau decided to run for the Forbes Shire Council because she has been raising her young family in Forbes and she wants to see the town fulfill its potential for future generations. One of her main goals as Councillor is to put Forbes on the map. She wants people from afar to say ‘Oh yes, I know Forbes – I would love to live there’. Cr Chau feels the biggest obstacle in Forbes is a lack of innovative and creative thinking in solving problems. “You can’t expect a different result using the same method.” She also believes that you can be inclusive and diverse at the same time. “I think we need to be open minded and receptive to new ideas. If we capitalise on our differences in backgrounds and skills and contribute with whatever we have, we can make Forbes a better place.”

Essential Energy’s
Flood safety tips Essential Energy advises customers of some basic flood safety tips to help you stay safe around electricity during flooding. It is important to remember that flood waters can damage electrical installations. Any deposited mud and debris are able to conduct electricity, making the installation unsafe during and after the flood. The waters can also lead to corrosion of electrical connections and significantly increase the risk of the connection failing or causing a fire. An installation that has been inundated with flood water requires careful inspection and any repairs before supply can be restored.
