The Hunter by Damian Vick.
The Mark Maker by Brett Garling.
The fourth Somewhere down the Lachlan Sculpture competition received 23 entries with the $20,000 acquisition prize going to The Hunter by Damian Vick, and the $4,000 open prize won by by Brett Garling for The Mark Maker. “What you have achieved here is quite fantastic,” said Clive Calder, the guest judge from Sydney at the announcement of the winners. “I commend you for your efforts. There are not many towns with a space like this.” Clive said the composition of the bronze sculpture The Mark Maker was fantastic. “I like the way he sculpted the hands.” In the acquisition category three pieces stood out for Clive: The Hunter, A Farmers Draught and Balance. The Hunter will be-
come the property of the Forbes Arts Society and will remain in Albion Park until the sculptures will be moved out around Lake Forbes and eventually all the way to Condobolin. Damian told The Forbes Phoenix from Melbourne he was surprised and honoured to have won. “While it is a thrill to be recognised at a competition of this calibre, the award is particularly significant because I feel The Hunter represents a key milestone in my career. I have been making sculptures for almost 10 years and this work is possibly the first sculpture that accurately displays the kind of dynamism and energy I have long sought to achieve.

COUNCIL COMMENTS On Monday, His Excellency General The Honourable David Hurley AC DSC (Ret’d), Governor of New South Wales and his wife, Linda Hurley travelled to Forbes to thank volunteers and emergency service personnel who assisted during the recent floods. He was also met with flood-affected farmers, key agencies involved in the flood operation and visited the students and staff at Bedgerabong School. His Excellency thoroughly enjoyed his time in Forbes and everyone involved appreciated being able to talk to him about their experiences during the flood. The Somewhere Down the Lachlan Sculpture Forbes $20,000 Acquisition Prize and Open $4000 Prize winners were announced at the official opening last Thursday night. It was nice to catch up with the judge Clive Calder from Manly and to see residents and visitors in attendance. “I am truly grateful to the organisers and the people of Forbes, who have under trying circumstances made this event happen. I am truly honoured that a work of mine will become part of your community.” Wayne Richards, President of the Forbes Services Memorial Club who established the annual competition, said entries came from all over Australia, even as far as Broome. Brett is from Wongarbon near Dubbo, while John Den, who sculpted Lachland Tower, is from Eugowra. President of the Forbes Arts Society, Keith Mullete, said the Somewhere down the Lachlan trail had become a substantial project with the recent funding announcement for the first part of the trail to expand the Wiradjuri Dreaming Centre. A Pain In The Heel

Paper Party Celebrates Children’s Week
Children’s Week celebrates the rights of children to enjoy childhood, and plenty of children were doing just that on Wednesday. Northside Chapel was a frenzy of happy faces, as local service providers joined forces to celebrate childhood. About 100 pre-schoolers and toddlers from playgroups, pre-schools and early childhood centres around Forbes brought their carers along for a morning of crafty activities and plenty of fun. This year’s theme was “children have the right to reliable information from the media”, which is taken from the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child. In keeping with the theme the craft play centred around paper – kids made their own newspaper pirate hats, got their fingers into some paper mache, made their own badges, or got busy colouring-in. Dietician Catherine Forbes had some healthy choices games for the kids, while others got their faces painted or donned temporary tattoos. The jumping castle was another popular activity. The Children’s Week celebrations are an annual event in Forbes, and provide a great opportunity for the service providers to get
together. Workers from SaCC, Centacare and Parkes Family Support Service joined the early childhood teachers to celebrate childhood with a lot of very happy kids.
Jane O’Malley from Lachlan Health Service helped out with some paper-craft. Amelia Grayson models her hand-made pirate hat.

RED BEND Year 12
“Each morning I have to hobble to the toilet because I get a sharp pain in my heel when I walk. It settles after a while and feels like I am walking on a bruise.” Is this you? Plantar Fasciitis is the most common cause of heel pain. According to research, 80% of all cases of Plantar Fasciitis show spontaneous improvement within 12 months. This means that if you are prepared to suffer the pain for the next year, you have an 80% chance of improvement. If you want to be a little more proactive there are a few things you can do. The plantar fascia is a thick fibrous band of tissue that fans from the heel to the base of each toe. It helps to support the arch of the foot. Plantar Fasciitis strikes when degenerative changes occur in the fascia where it attaches to the heel. It is sometimes associated with bony heel spurs however the spurs themselves do not cause pain. The cause of Plantar Fasciitis is often multifactorial and may include any combination of; stiff ankle joints, low arches, high arches, weak foot muscles, poor footwear or increased load due to weight gain or prolonged periods of standing. Self-treatment for this problem should involve massage to the foot arch and gentle calf stretches before rising each morning, strengthening exercises for the intrinsic muscles in the foot, a temporary decrease in training and a gradual return to sport when it is no longer painful to walk. In addition any biomechanical issues present in the lower limbs should be addressed to prevent recurrence.

Time To Vote Again In Orange By-Election All registered voters in the Orange State District, which includes Forbes, will have to go to the polls for the third time this year in the NSW State by-election on Saturday, 12th November to vote for a member of the Legislative Assembly. The seat of Orange became vacant when National MP Andrew Gee won the federal seat of Calare in the July election. A field of seven candidates are contesting the elections with Forbes resident Dianne Decker the only candidate from outside Orange. The other candidates are Scott Barrett for the Nationals, Philip Donate for the Shooters, Fishers and Farmers Party, Janelle Bicknell for the Greens, Scott Munro an Independent, Bernard Fitzsimon for Labor and Kevin Duffy Independent. Dianne is standing for the Christian Democratic Party. Dianne, who served as a Forbes Councillor for 16 years, said the biggest issues she would be focusing on were council amalgamations, flood proofing the Newell Highway to Parkes and West Wyalong and health. She said the Shire Council was the first place people would go to when they had a problem. “This is where locals feel they can be heard. If councils are amalgamated this
would no longer happen.” For Dianne, who lives on the Newell Highway and experiences the silence and desertion on a daily basis since the floodwaters, the need to flood proof this important link has never been bigger. Another service she has experienced personally is health when she needed life saving medical care 18 months ago. “The Orange Hospital is vital for medical services in our region and must be given sufficient staff.”

Cuppa With A Copper Locals had the opportunity to have a Cuppa with a Copper at Victoria Park on Wednesday. It was the first such gathering in Forbes, but Superintendent Chris Taylor said these mornings have been held in villages around the Lachlan Area Command. It’s an opportunity to break down barriers between police and the public, and to chat about anything or even raise a complaint. Senior Constable Wally Biles said that the ideal scenario would be for most people in town to know police by their first names. “Unless you’re in trouble or a crisis you’re not likely to talk to the police,” he said.

With so many mosquitoes around following our recent floods, we thought it would be a good idea to give you some mosquito related information. Mosquitoes can carry diseases that may be passed on to people through mosquito bites including Murray Valley encephalitis virus and Ross River virus. Periods of heavy rainfall or floods can lead to ideal breeding conditions for mosquitoes and we are definitely seeing evidence of this in Forbes at the moment. There are many simple things you can do to avoid getting bitten by mosquitoes, including: • Wear long, loose-fitting clothes if mosquitoes are around. • Cover up as much as possible. • Use an effective mosquito repellent on all exposed skin. • Prevent mosquito breeding around your own home. • Prevent mosquitoes from getting inside by using fly screens on windows and doors. • Use mosquito coils or insecticide candles in small, outdoor areas. There are many effective mosquito repellents available to suit the whole family including the all natural Mozzigear mosquito bands (for kids and adults), patches (to put on clothing) and wipes. For younger children or those with sensitive skin, we have our own Life mosquito repellent or alternatively you could try Moogoo Tailswat, a natural scented body spray that seems to be unpalatable for mossies. It can be sprayed as liberally as needed, including over the face. It is also great for small children that are sleeping in an area where they may be bitten. We also have a range of DEET repellents for those who like a heavy duty option. Call in to Flannery’s Pharmacy to ask for advice on prevention or treatment of mosquito bites.

AT THE MOVIES with Braeden MOVIE REVIEW
The Secret Life Of Pets The Secret Life of Pets is from the creators of Despicable Me. It begins with a young terrier named Max who lives a great life riding through Central Park in the bicycle basket of his owner Katie. They have shared a great relationship ever since Katie found Max when he was a puppy. Max also has a close relationship with his friends: Chloe the cat, Gidget the pampered dog who is Max’s love interest, Mel a hyperactive dog, Sweetpea a little Budgie,
and Buddy a laid-back Dachshund. One day Max’s owner Katie brought home a big brown furry dog named Duke who tries to steal away all the attention from his owner Katie. Max becomes so jealous he tries to frame Duke by causing destruction to his owner’s apartment. Duke and Max decide to go on an adventure through the streets and find themselves caught up with a crazy bunny named Snowball and get themselves into a bit of trouble. They need to work together with Max’s other apartment friends to get out of trouble. This was a good movie. It made me laugh a lot. I wish to see it again. This would be a good movie for kids of all ages.
By Braeden Dukes-Rankmore Movie tickets for Brayden and a colleague to attend the movies are paid for by the Forbes Phoenix.

Dawson Blasts To Medal Win
At the handover on Wednesday were from the left Helen Westwood from CanAssist, David Fitzgerald, GM Forbes Services Memorial Club and Maureen Field, Treasurer CanAssist.
CanAssist Benefits From Dancing With Stars
CanAssist received $18,100 from the Forbes Services Club on Wednesday from the ticket sales for the Dancing With The Stars charity night to be held on 5th November at the Club. The response to the ticket sales was fantastic with a sellout within seven hours. David Fitzgerald, General Manager of the Club said: “The Club is proud to be the host venue by way of providing assistance and support for the event, which is such a good cause and encourages the whole community to come together to support those suffering from the illness. This is another example of the way the whole of Forbes supports these charities.”
Maureen Field, Treasurer of CanAssist said: “At the moment we have given $60,000 a year for patience assistance and this is all done through donations and events such as this, as we receive no Government grants. Special thanks should go to Therese Gunn and Cassandra Tyack, who along with all members of CanAssist have done such a fabulous job.” On the night of Dancing with The Stars, with all contestants unknown, there will be an auction and raffle prizes to be won. These were sponsored by local businesses who made the event possible. By Cheryl Newsom
Melbourne Cup Luncheon For A Good Cause After last year’s success the Forbes Services Memorial Club is once again holding a Melbourne Cup Lunch and Fashion Parade on Tuesday. It is a fun and enjoyable day raising money for the Forbes Breast Cancer Support Group. Models for the fashion parade are sourced from staff ranks and other volunteers. They will model clothes from Little Extras for the ladies, while Target is supplying clothes for men and children.
Doors open at 12pm with prizes for the best hat and best dressed, as well as a lucky door prize and sweeps. The raffle drawn on the day has three great hampers to be won. The lunch is a buffet consisting of a variety of hot and cold dishes, an assorted bread basket, delectable desserts with tea and coffee included. The compere on the day is Jenny Curry. Tickets are $35 for members and $40 for non-members.

We wish our Lachlan Valley Districts team well at the Country Championships at Goulburn this weekend. The Club Championships has been moved to 19th and 20th and 26th and 27th November. By Short Putt
