H E Silos Is NSW 2016 Business Of The Year

The Forbes family business of H E Silos was named the 2016 Business of the Year by the state’s peak business organisation, the NSW Business Chamber. There were more than 150 finalists competing for the top award. CEO Steven Morrison was also called up as winner of the Excellence in Innovation category at a black tie gala dinner attended by more than 1,000 guests in Sydney at the end of last week. “It is just amazing, we are still in shock,” said Steven and his daughter Stevie Morrison earlier this week. They were still on a high after attending a function of the CEO Club at the Sydney Opera House on Monday night. “I have never had such an experience to meet so many CEO’s who all have a passion for running an excellent business,” said Stevie. H E Silos has been getting a lot of media exposure, “which is great for Forbes after all the negative media after the floods”, said Stevie. But she felt the biggest compliment came from the judge Joe Spencer. “She said our entry was very well presented. After reading it she completely understood the product and felt she was part of the business.” The prestigious award recognises overall business excellence in the areas of growth, innovation, export, sustainability, employment practices and ethics.

MAYORAL NOTES Congratulations to HE Silos who were awarded the NSW Business Chamber’s Business of the Year, as well as the winner of the Excellence in Innovation category at a black tie gala dinner in Sydney last Friday. Principal Steven Morrison said he was very pleased to have won the award and being a member of the Forbes Business Chamber had opened a lot of doors for the company. VANFEST on Friday and Saturday was excellent and everyone who attended had a great time. The work the Clifton family has done to bring an event like this to Forbes is quite outstanding. The event is a huge boost to our economy and they should be very proud of another successful year. It was a busy weekend in town with the Find it in Forbes Christmas Carnival and a number of markets on Saturday. There was also the SES Fundraiser Concert at the Forbes Services Memorial Club and the Forbes Choral Group Carol of Christmas Cantata on Sunday afternoon. All of the events were well supported and it was great to see so many people out and about over the weekend. This weekend is another busy one with the Rotary Ipomoea Christmas Tree Festival at the Town Hall today, tomorrow and Sunday, and Carols by Candlelight on Sunday night at Victoria Park. Steven’s parents commenced operations in 1969 as Hillston Engineering, located in Hillston NSW. It was originally an engineering company, but evolved into the agricultural industry and in 1972 started the construction of grain silos. In 1984 the company moved to Forbes. Today they are not only passionate about grain storage, but to ensure food security in Australia and the world. They have developed the Thermal Insect Control System (TICS) to address an efficient and ef-

fective way of grain storage by fumigating silos from the ground level. This innovative approach reduces safety risks as well as losses due to insect infestation, contamination and degradation. According to Steven, Australia is the world leader in grain storage techniques. “There is a lot we can show the world to ensure food security for the future.” H E Silos mainly focus their business on the east coast of Australia, but have been dealing with international clients in New Zealand, Fiji, Japan and New Caledonia. “There is plenty more to come,” said Steven looking to the future. Schools Spectacular Students Return As Stars Who Will You Nominate? Six Forbes High students returned from Sydney on a high after Saturday night’s final performance of Schools Spectacular ever that now holds the Guinness World Records title for Largest Amateur Variety Act. The Schools Spectacular cast, officially counted as 5322 for the Guinness World Records title, included a 2,700-strong choir; 2,300 dancers; an 80-piece symphony orchestra; a world-class stage band; and more than 40 featured artists. The show lived up to its theme: Dream Big. At times the performers flooded the arena stage with vibrant intensity while in other intimate scenes performers captured the huge stadium audience with their mesmer-

ising talent. From classical extravaganzas blending the symphony orchestra and choir to explosions of pulsating rock and pop, the Schools Spectacular colourfully unfolded the broad spectrum of music and dance. Schools Spectacular Executive Producer Jane Simmons said everyone should be proud to share in the triumph of the 2016 show. “Schools Spectacular 2016 was amazing,” she said. “Every single performer, the incredible teachers and staff who brought it all together at the arena and at school, the students’ parents and all who contributed deserve huge applause for the incredible efforts.”

More than 5,300 students flooded the newer bigger Schools Spectacular arena stage with a kaleidoscope of colourful dance and music last weekend.

Nominations are open for the Forbes Shire Citizen of the Year (26 years and over) and Forbes Shire Young Citizen of the Year (25 years and younger). The awards recognise and reward community members who have displayed a consistent record of excellence and made a significant contribution to our community. Nominations are open to all residents of the Forbes Shire and the awards will be presented at Australia Day celebrations on Thursday, 26th January next year. Australia Day celebrations will be held at Colin McKenzie Park. Mayor Graeme Miller encouraged residents to put forward a community member who deserved to be recognised as the Forbes Shire Citizen of the Year and Young Citizen of the Year. “If you know someone who has been the backbone of a community group or has shown an outstanding achievement in academic or sporting fields, make sure you nominate them for the prestigious awards,” the Mayor said. The shocking statistics of domestic violence is a national emergency. This was the message of Nova Peris, the first Aboriginal Olympic gold medalist and former politician, at the fourth annual White Ribbon Day March last Friday. Nova highlighted the shocking statistic that 90% of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women were victims of domestic violence, but said it was important to remember that not all men were guilty. Another high profile speaker Peter Gibbs, who established Indigenous Police Recruiting Our Way Delivery (IPROWD) and a former Parkes Spacemen player, drew on sporting analogies for his message. “As a Spaceman we had many battles with the Forbes Magpies on the field, but off the field we always had respect for each other.” Peter said just as a sports team work hard to reach the number one spot, the Forbes community needed to work as a team to get out of the top 10 worst spot for domestic violence in NSW.

Ethan Markwort, a Forbes High student who participated in a program called Love Bites, said many sporting role models did not set a good example as they would always blame alcohol and drugs for committing acts of violence. “This is not right.” Todd Skinner of Northparkes Mines announced the mine had become the first White Ribbon accredited mine in Australia. “More than 80% of our workforce are men and the company felt it was important to train employees to enable them to help prevent and respond to violence against women.” The more than 200 people who took part in the White Ribbon March pledged an oath: I will stand up, speak out and act to prevent men’s violence against women. Charles Dwyer, White Ribbon Ambassador, said: “Today we become the drivers of change through our collective efforts to raise community awareness.” By Maggi Barnard

Jemalong Market Day Raise Funds For Special Chairs The Jemalong Residential Village (JRV) will hold its first ever Market Day on Tuesday, 6th December. The market will run from 10 am to 2pm and offer a variety of stalls with crafts made by residents over the past 12 months, plants, Christmas toys, homemade cakes and jams and some commercial products offered by businesses from town. There will also be a bbq and a raffle for a king size quilt. According to Gwen Barnard of JRV the residents initiated the idea for a market day, after the annual fete had to be cancelled because of the floods. “We hope to get a good attendance. We have 91 resi-

dents and they all have family who would come, but the whole community is welcome,” said Gwen. The money raised from the event will be used to buy one or more special chairs with wheels residents can use when eating. “It is much easier to push them in on these chairs and is a much safer option for both the residents and the staff,” explained Gwen. She said one chair cost between $700 to $800. “We have already raised about $700 with the raffle, so we might be able to buy two chairs.” The JVR hope to make it an annual event.

Rugby Union Brings Famous Comedian To Town One of Australia’s most loved and leading comic entertainers Vince Sorrenti will be in Forbes next year for the Rugby Union Club’s major annual fundraiser. Vince will be the guest speaker at the President’s Lunch on Saturday, 18th March with an expected attendance of 880 guests. Vince, a four-time winner of the Mo Award for Australia’s Best Stand-Up Comic, is highly sought after as a host and performer. He not only has a career as a TV host, but is also an actor, MC and writer. The event will again be managed by the table captain system, which sees invitations sent to representatives who manage payments and attendance for a table of ten. Swimmer’s Shoulder

With the weather finally warming up swimming is an ideal way to get a full body workout. Unfortunately due to the repetitive nature of swimming overuse injuries in the shoulder and neck are common. The shoulder is a ball and socket joint with a ring of cartilage around the socket to make the joint more stable. Around this is a loose joint capsule that is reinforced with ligaments and muscles. Because the shoulder is a very mobile joint it relies on the action of these muscles and ligaments to maintain stability. These muscles are called the rotator cuff and consist of four muscles that work together to keep your shoulder centred in its socket. So, if swimming strengthens the shoulder muscles why do so many swimmers have shoulder problems? The simple answer is due to the repetitive nature of swimming. The more complex answer lies in the fact that many swimmers don’t have good stroke technique and those that do can still have problems because the swim stroke (in particular freestyle), mainly strengthens the shoulder internal rotators and adductors. This causes muscle imbalance, leaving the scapular stabilisers and external rotators relatively weak and joint laxity increases. The rotator cuff then must work harder to keep the shoulder centred in the socket. When the already relatively weakened external rotators fatigue the ball of the shoulder joint moves forward and the tendon of the rotator cuff muscles is pinched between the bones as the hand is raised above shoulder height. The holiday season is almost upon us, but for those with pets there are a few extra things to organise before you can go away: who will be taking care of your furry friends? Boarding kennels are a good option; your pets will be safely confined and have regular attention. Your pet will require up-to-date vaccinations to stay at commercial boarding facilities. Unfortunately, most kennels require advance bookings for the busy Christmas-season with most booked out by August. Keep this in mind if you need to make last-minute plans. Also, boarding kennels might not be suitable if your pet is easily stressed by other animals or strange environments. If you decide to leave your pets at home, and don’t have a trusted friend or neighbour to help, a pet-sitting service might be appropriate. The pet-sitter would visit your house daily to provide food, company and enrichment. Some pets are stressed by changes in their routine so it’s important to keep an eye on them to ensure they are eating, drinking, toileting and are otherwise okay in your absence. Still, you might prefer to holiday with your pets. There are lots of hotels, home-stays and camping sites that are pet-friendly and can be easily found online. However, you might need to book in advance. If your lucky pup is holidaying with you, there are still a few extra things to plan. Make sure that your dog’s vaccinations, worming and flea treatment is up to date. You might also need to arrange paralysis tick prevention, depending on your destination. Don’t forget to pack their leash, food, doggy bags, and water bowls. If your pet takes any prescription medication take enough to last the holiday. Also, make sure your pet is safe while travelling in your car. Use an appropriate restraint, such as a harness or a crate. Your pet should be able to sit or lie down in a natural position while restrained. Never leave your dog unattended in a car. Dogs can die very quickly from heat stress, even in mild weather. Whether you are leaving or taking your pets with you, ensure your pets are microchipped and your contact details are correct on the microchip register so you can be contacted if need be. There are six microchip registers across Australia, so make sure the one your pets are recorded on is recognised nationally. Also, attach an ID tag with your contact details to your pet’s collar. The first Green Army team deployed in the Forbes and Parkes Shire Council areas did not only win the hearts and minds of everyone they worked with, but also made a valuable contribution to conservation projects. The team of six young participants graduated last week from Central West Lachlan Landcare (CWLL) after 20 weeks of work. “It was an amazing experience and I am very proud of myself,” said Chelsi Edwards, one of the participants. Thomas Staff of Skillset congratulated the team on their marvellous achievement saying the CEO of Skillset was amazed by the team’s positive spirit. The participants worked on several projects including the tree lines at the Central West Livestock Exchange at Forbes, two planting projects on Condobolin Road and PAC Park in Parkes and other planting projects. “All these projects have a focus on maintaining and improving biodiversity in our local area,” said CWLL Chair, Margot Jolly. Marg Applebee, CWLL Co-ordinator said: “It has been a pleasure to work with Skillset to provide work experience opportunities to young people. We hope this is the beginning of new opportunities and that they build on their skills acquired to pursue further employment.” CWLL will be working with Skillset again with a second team starting in mid-January 2017. Marg said she would like to hear from local landholders willing to work with CWLL and to contact her on 6862 4914 with any suggestions. ‘I Can Save The Songbird Too’

A 16-year-old Forbes High student won third place in a national songwriting competition. Paige Ellison came third in the Year 11/12 section of the Australian Children’s Music Foundation (ACMF) National Songwriting Competition with her song Ropes. “It is really amazing. I am so excited,” said Paige of her success after entering for the second time. She started writing songs when she was 14. She is the lead vocalist for local band House Of Tribes and also writes most of the songs for the band. She fronts the band with her brother Jake, who received a highly commended in the same section of the competition in 2015 for his composition Underdog. Paige’s song will feature on the band’s new album, ‘We Still Have Hearts’, which is set for release in mid-January 2017. “I think with all the publicity my song is getting, it will help our band a lot.” Paige, who also plays guitar, piano, uku-
