CHRISTMAS CHEMISTRY… Trilby and Ben Crowley with the entry from Forbes Public School. Ben’s class made the tree ornaments by decorating plastic cups and melting them.

How The Grinch Did Not Steal Forbes’ Christmas Cheer

The Grinch could never have stolen the Christmas cheer from the Christmas Tree Festival and Carols by Candlelight last weekend. Hundreds of people flocked to the Town Hall to see the 90 Christmas trees and nativity scenes made by Forbes families, businesses, and school, church and community groups on display, while more than 800 people enjoyed a beautiful evening of carol singing and entertainment in Victoria Park on Sunday night. According to Sue-Anne Nixon, President of the Forbes Rotary Ipomea who organised the Christmas Tree Festival, a lot of thought and planning had gone into the entries, which impressed the youngest to the most mature visitors.

“Our Rotary Club holds this festival to give children a Christmas experience,” said Sue-Anne and “the joyful chatter of school children who visited on Friday afternoon to see the trees they made was worth a million dollars”. There were some clever play on words with entries called ‘PoeTree’, ‘Pan-Tree’ (Pantry) and no one could miss the DentisTree with lolly teeth hung with dental floss. There was a nativity scene made with tractors complete with the ‘angel on high’. The Bruen family tree was a standout made with recycled products including chicken wire, baling twine and decorated with kookaburra feathers. Continued on page 2

MAYORAL NOTES What a fantastic night out at Carols by Candlelight on Sunday. The event was very well attended and Judy Prior did a great job as Master of Ceremoies. It was a pleasant evening and Santa even made an appearance. On Monday I went to West Wyalong with our Director of Engineering and Technical Services John Zannes to attend a Newell Highway Taskforce Forum. We gave feedback as to why flood proofing is needed for the Newell Highway and this will now be collated and presented to the Federal Government. The Templar Street footpath is at a standstill at the moment due to the unavailability of pavers. As soon as the pavers are available this work will continue. Unfortunately Council’s Community Newsletter, that was supposed to be delivered to all households, has been lost by Australia Post. The newsletter will now be sent out the week of 19th December. Just another reminder that there are a number of items on public exhibition and I encourage you to have a look at these documents. These include the draft Community Funding Program Policy and the Pedestrian and Cycling Strategy. Both of these documents are available to view on our ‪website www.forbes.nsw.gov.au or at Council’s administration office. Don’t forget to have your say on the Forbes Community Plan 2027. Surveys can still be sent back or completed online at www.forbes.localvoices.com.au. Our December Council meeting will be held in the Chambers on Thursday, 16th December at 1pm. All welcome to attend.

Ben Crowley from Forbes Public School explained his class made their tree ornaments by decorating plastic cups then melting them. Susie and Amelia Kerr from the Forbes Playgroup painted homemade salt dough cookies, whilst Jemalong Village residents commenced work in May to ensure their tree was decorated in style. The weekend’s Christmas cheer took on a tone of peace and joy at the annual Carols by Candlelight event, which saw a marked increase in people from last year. “It was a really good evening with a good crowd,” said Robyn Kenny. Mayor Graeme Miller welcomed everyone, while Santa’s lap was never empty as kids could not wait to meet him with their best smiles on display. The evening saw a good line-up of en-

locally first!

tertainment with the crowd taking part in carol singing with the Forbes Town Band and Generosity Church Band. James Whalan’s Cantata Choir performed, as well as Leonie Burton and Maddi Collits among others. Judy Prior, dressed as an Elf, lead the events as compere for the night. The inflatable big screen once again proved to be useful for displaying carol words, and a slide show. The Forbes Lions Club ensured no one went hungry or thirsty. By the end of the weekend many of us would agree with the Grinch: “Maybe, Christmas doesn’t come from a store. Maybe, Christmas perhaps is a little bit more.” If you didn’t get a chance to see the Christmas Tree Festival or attend the Carols, make sure to put it on your bucket list for December next year. First Market Day A Good Start For Festive Season At JRV When it was difficult to find a car park in the Jemalong Residential Village (JRV) on Tuesday, it was a good sign that the inaugural Market Day was going to be a great success! JRV locals Cynthia Green and Gladys Johnson said the residents initiated the idea of the Market Day. They were happy with the number of people in attendance and agreed that it would hopefully make it possible to buy two special chairs that would make the residents lives easier. The wet weather didn’t appear to dampen anyone’s spirits as there were people milling around smiling, greeting each other, and perusing the various stalls. There was so much to see and fabulous things to buy including plants grown from both seed and cuttings by the residents with the help of Zac who volunteers twice a week. In addition, there was also pre-loved toys, an array of delicious homemade cakes, slices, jams and what seemed to be everyone’s favourite - donuts! The too familiar Aussie bbq aroma enticed everyone to tuck into the sausages, rissoles and steak with a hint of onion. Just when you thought there couldn’t possibly be any more, a group of carolers passed by singing ‘Oh Come All Ye Faithful’. The residents all commented that they

were thrilled to see local businesses at the Market Day with fantastic gift ideas. They gave a big thank you to Blush, Flannery’s Chemist, Little Extras, News on Rankin and Scrapbox Patchwork Designs for attending. If I could have one wish said resident Barbara Cowled, “it would be for every resident of Forbes to visit Jemalong Retirement Village so they could see what a wonderful place it is to live”. Flood Affected Farmer Produces Calendar To Support Relief Efforts

Public Invited To Comment On Draft Policy For Community Funding

The Forbes farmer who used his love of flying and photography to bring national and even international awareness of the devastating floods, has produced a flood relief calendar for 2017. Brad Shephard compiled twelve photos of the floods around Forbes, Condobolin, Lake Cowal and towards Eugowra for the calendar of which 50% of proceeds will be going to the Lions Club Flood Appeal. He thought of compiling the calendar after his flood photos created so much awareness on social media and people encouraged him to do something to help raise funds. Brad was one of the farmers who suffered severe crop losses when up to 90% of his barley and wheat crops went under water. He said of the 300 acres of barley he had left, half of it was later destroyed by a hailstorm. He said he still had floodwater covering a couple of 1,000 acres on his farm. “At the moment I am just contracting and thinking of share farming for the future.” With losses estimated to be more than $500 million for farmers, Brad said it was going to be a tough Christmas for many. “At the moment most of them are getting on with the job doing contract work or stripping

what was left of their crops, but after the harvest things will quiet down.” As a survivor of depression, Brad had expressed concern for the mental well being of affected farmers after the floods. He said there were a lot of sad stories and the community needed all the help they could get. You can help by purchasing a calendar for $25 online at http://www.farmerfromdownunder.photography . Calendars are also available at AgNVet stores in Forbes, Condobolin and West Wyalong, Esme’s Coffee Shop, Kenny’s Baa Moo Oink Meats in Forbes and Sprayer Barn in Parkes. By Maggi Barnard

Forbes Shire Council is streamlining its approach to providing financial or in kind assistance to community groups, organisations and individuals. The draft Community Funding Program Policy, endorsed by Council at its November meeting, is now on public exhibition for comment. The draft copy is available for inspection and comment ‪until 5pm on Tuesday, 20th December at Council’s Administration Office or on Council’s website at http://www. forbes.nsw.gov.au/council/tenders-expressions-of-interest-and-exhibitions.aspx Funding requests were traditionally considered at Council meetings throughout the year, but the new program will align requests for support to Council’s annual budget cycle. General Manager Danny Green said this would better manage the funding process and prioritise a finite total budget. “The Community Funding Program recognises the vital contribution community groups and organisations play in the development of our social capital and quality of life,” Danny said. Danny invited the community, particularly local organisations, to make a submission on the new program policy. For more information contact Council’s Senior Administration Officer on ‪6850 2305.

A Betta Store

This week has seen the opening of the new Betta Store at 165 Lachlan Street, Forbes. With over six and a half times the floor space of the old store, which was just across the road, the new store now not only includes electrical and whitegoods, but bedding, unique furniture and Christmas decorations. Ian Westcott said, “After many conversations with our local customers here in Forbes requesting us to stock furniture and bedding, we decided that the time was right to expand our store and offer the Forbes community and district a ‘betta’ offering in electrical and whitegoods as well. This is the only shop of it’s kind located in Forbes and it shows our commitment and investment to the community.” Ian and Mandy Westcott, first invested in the Forbes business community when they purchased the store in Lachlan Street, on lst July 2002. Now, some 14 years later, they have made the move across the street into bigger and brighter premises, located on the corner of Brown’s Lane and Lachlan Street, in the old Bernardi’s supermarket building. “Come 2017 we will have an even wider

range of goods with a full range of entry and high end cooking appliances displayed as built in cooking displays. We will be featuring cooking launches, guest chefs, vip nights and as always, we continue to deliver to all areas”, Ian said. With the expansion into the new premises Ian and his team are on the lookout for new staff as well. Mandy has spent quite a few months buying the furniture and bedding ranges, which cater for every room in the house as well as outdoor furniture to cater to everybody’s budget. New stock will be arriving all the time and of course, special orders can be sourced for the discerning customer. Ian wanted to thank his wonderful staff who have worked so incredibly hard to pull this together, as well as suppliers, tradesmen and the people of Forbes who have been so supportive. Make sure you drop in and see them, and with all sorts of finance offers available to customers, this is the place to go for your Christmas shopping. Go Local, That’s Betta!

QUESTION of the week

What is one of your favourite memories about Christmas, and one of your favourite presents?

Bernardi’s said goodbye to a loyal and long-serving employee, Ron Turner (second from the right), on Saturday. Here he is with the Bernardi family. From the left are David, Tony, Helen and Joe.

Bernardi’s Popular Ron Retires

Ron Turner has been greeting customers for more than 36 years at Bernardi’s and last Saturday hundreds of customers came to say goodbye to him. CEO of Bernardi's Supermarkets, Joe Bernardi said at the official farewell: “Ron started at Bernardi’s the year I was born. He was one of the original 20 staff members who came to work for Bernardi’s and outlasted them all. He has seen hundreds of young team members come and go and was always willing to offer his advice and support to them. He is such a valued part of the Bernardi’s family and will be sorely missed by not only us, but also the Forbes community, who have come to know and

love Ron.” This was echoed on the company’s Facebook page with loads of comments made by members of the public saying the store won’t be the same without him. “Sad to see you go, I can remember you from when I was a little girl,” said one. Ron said the best part of his job was meeting people and watching kids grow up to become adults. “I will miss talking to everyone the most.” Ron said he did not have any plans for the future, but looked forward to spending time with his wife Christine and visiting his grandchildren in Queanbeyan.

Set your imagination free these school holidays with the annual Summer Reading Club’s Heroes and Villains theme. The program kicked off on 1st December at the Forbes Library and online. Created for children and young people aged 6 to 17, the Summer Reading Club is a free national program to instill a love of libraries and reading. This year’s Heroes and Villains theme allows participants to explore the conventions associated with super and everyday heroes — and their villainous counterparts — through a range of exciting interactive reading activities and games. Minister for Innovation, Science and the

Digital Economy Leeanne Enoch said it was important to keep young minds switched on over the summer holiday period. “Stories have the power to help children develop ideas and imagine what might be possible – exactly what we want for our entrepreneurs of tomorrow,” she said. More than 48,000 children registered with the Summer Reading Club last year, reading around 333,000 in the summer. To join the Club, register online at summerreadingclub.org.au or into the Forbes Library. They have some stickers, tattoos and bookmarks to give away too. The Summer Reading Club will run until 31st January 2017.

Become A Holiday Hero

Sally Spence: As a child going to the Forbes Town Hall for the Carnival, listening to Christmas Carols and then to collect the lollies that Santa threw off the balcony. My favourite present was a book of baby Jesus and the Christmas story… now you have made we want to get it out again.

Barbara Cowled: Sharing Christmas with all my great grandchildren – Christmas is not the same without children. My doll named Joy that my grandparents gave me for Christmas when I was two. I still have her and she is one of my pride possessions to this day.

Dot Male: At the age of 12 I really wanted a camera. We lived on a farm and each Thursday my Dad went into town. I went with him close to Christmas and told him I wanted a camera. He bought me a Kodak ‘Box Brownie’ camera, which was the best camera at the time. When we got home and told Mum she said she had already bought me a camera… My favourite present was a gold cross.

RURAL ROUNDUP Varied Cropping Results For Forbes The rain and floods earlier this year had a major impact on cropping with farmers reporting varied results to date for their canola and wheat crops. With the canola harvest finished, and wheat well under way, there have been some positive results from the local farmers. Neil Mattiske of Sunnydale, who operates a mixed farming operation on the Newell Highway, said they had lost approximately 25% of their canola and 20% of their wheat crop due to water damage. “The canola has been quite average, however the oil content is up around 45-47% oil, which means we are entitled to a bonus, which is great for the farmers.” Neil said the wheat harvest would be finished by next Friday to the north, and to the south and west they would be 50% through their harvest, “as along as we don’t get any more rain”. He said the wheat harvest was really good in patches, with it going ASW (standard wheat), and some going H2 (which has 11.5% protein). “Under the old scale, we are getting around 15 – 18 bags to the acre, with our best paddocks producing 24 bags to the acre.” When the harvest is done, work on cutting lucerne and hay irrigation will start before Christmas, and after the festive period crutching will start.

Jemalong Wool Weekly Market Update Prices continued to climb this week pushing the NRI to 1441, the highest level since June 2011. Buyer attention persisted in the Superfine microns with 16.5 and 17 microns up to 60 cents higher whilst 17 and 18 microns were 40 to 50 cents dearer. The rises shrunk towards the medium/ broader microns, culminating in a small loss for 22 microns. Most activity was in the early part of the week with Thursday finishing on a flat note when lots outside of specification tended to lose ground while the better lots generally stayed firm until the end. AWTA Key Test data for the month of November shows an increase in testing volumes of 21.5%, which counteracts the decrease in Octobers figures. Nationally we have tested 1.6% more bales YTD, compared to the same period last season however we have sold 8% more. 55,000 bales will be put before the trade next week in the second last sale before the three week Christmas recess.

ALL DRESSED UP… The Forbes High School Year 12 Students at their recent Graduation Dinner.

Year 12 Graduation Dinner Proud Moment For Students And Parents

The Year 12 graduates of the Forbes High School dazzled everyone in their sequined satin gowns and high heels, suits and ties at the Graduation Dinner on Saturday, 19th November. Parents and teachers were bursting with pride as the graduates were presented through the archway in the upper reception room of the Forbes Inn. In an extremely pleasant atmosphere, speeches throughout the evening were delivered by the Principal, Charles Dwyer, the Year 12 Advisor, Jane Hill and the Master of Ceremonies and Assistant Year 12 Advisor Joseph Doyle. They all reflected on various highlights of the students’ time at school. The Captain’s speech, given by Emily Godden, was full of wisdom and words of thanks to everyone. She also commemorated the loss of her fellow Captain, Oliver Carlisle, earlier in the year. This was

followed by the cutting of the cake, which turned out to be a very delicious chocolate mud cake and was enjoyed with tea and coffee for dessert. As the evening drew to a close, the DJ and photo booth were both heavily patronised by the young and young at heart. The night proved to be a huge success and several attendees were still dancing when the event came to an end. A huge thank you to all the graduates who attended and their families for the support they have shown to the school and each other at this event. Special thanks must also go to the organising committee of Anita Morrison (FHS Bursar), Jane Hill (Year Advisor), Emily Bass (English/Language Teacher) and Joseph Doyle (Assistant Year Advisor and Maths Teacher), the cake artist Shirley Myers and the staff of the Forbes Inn lead by Beck Kennedy. Community’s Compassion Keeps Garland Family Going

Last month the Garland family spent a day at Forbes McDonalds for the national McHappy Day – the biggest annual fundraiser for the Ronald McDonald House. It was a rare moment of togetherness for the family of seven, who had been wrenched apart six months earlier when their youngest daughter Ava was diagnosed with leukemia. At 1:15pm on 31st May, Kathy had taken the three-year-old to the doctor for a checkup. Ava hadn’t been feeling well, and the doctor sent her to Forbes hospital for blood tests, but when the results came back Ava was sent straight to Westmead. By 1am Ava had been booked into the Camperdown ward and started on intensive chemotherapy immediately. It was an unexpected crisis to suddenly face, and the fact that Ava’s four older sisters were at school at the time was an added complication. Fortunately, a close friend looked after the girls overnight, despite having four kids of her own. Meanwhile, Andrew, Kath and Ava were in Sydney with nothing but the clothes they were wearing. Redkite provided them with a tote bag full of useful products, such as toiletries, thermal cups, a thermometer, and a diary. Ava joined the Redkite Bead Program, and is given a bead for every procedure or milestone she has faced. The family has received support from cancer charities such as Little Wings, Meals from the Heart, and the Ronald McDonald House. “They’re amazing,” Kath said, “but you never think you’ll need them.” It’s been a tough six months for the family, who are now living in four different locations. Kath and Ava are staying at the Ronald Mc-

Donald house at Westmead Hospital. Scarlett, 13, is boarded at Red Bend Catholic College. Olivia, 11, Polly, 8, and Willa, 6, have moved to Orange to live with Kath’s sister Annette and her husband Anthony. Andrew returned home to manage the farm at Wirrinya, but after the flooding in September, he ended up in hospital with Ross River Fever. Kath said the community has been phenomenal. From providing home-cooked meals to get Andrew through harvest, to holding fundraisers, or delivering hampers of necessities, Forbes has rallied around the family. “Ava is going through a hard stage, she is currently on steroids and is scheduled to have 15 days straight chemo around Christmas. After this intensive phase of chemo, Ava will be on maintenance chemo for the next 18 months.” Kathy said. “So many people have sent me messages, letters and gifts, which just makes me feel strong and loved and able to face the hard days being away from home and the rest of the family.” This swell of support looks set to build in 2017. Family friend Adrian Matthews is organising 'Opera for Ava' to be held at Red Bend College in April 2017. The concert will feature Dominica Matthews, a principal soloist for Opera Australia. Even Scarlett is doing her bit, and has so far raised more than $5,000 for the 2017 World’s Greatest Shave after pledging to shave her luscious locks for her sister. Decision 1: Snap out of it. You could be heading in the wrong direction. You might think you’re comfortable now but it’s important to ensure that your financial future isn’t heading for a financial cliff. Chances are that if you keep doing what you’ve been doing you’ll end up broke later in life. You have to snap out of it. You have to decide that doing what everyone else is doing isn’t going to get the job done in the long term. And life is too long to live any of it being poor! Decision 2: Get smart about money. Financial education is your ticket to financial freedom. Managing your money and turning it into more isn’t rocket science. The problem is sorting through all the dodgy ‘information’ out there. Rather than rely on smooth talking salespeople trying to sell you a financial product (that will see your money make them rich), start with the best investment possible… invest in your financial education. At Wealth Train, we will teach you what you need to know with advice that we are proud to say is completely independent and unbiased. And the best part, you can do it at your own pace, in your own time. Decision 3: Take action. NOW. Procrastination is usually the biggest hurdle to overcome. You didn’t really need me to tell you that you need to make changes, did you? However, if you’re like most people, you’re just not sure where to start. Once you’re on board with Wealth Train, we will eliminate your indecision. Armed with world class information you will make confident, informed decisions that will build and protect your wealth. 1, 2, 3… Let’s get started.
