MAYORAL NOTES Council’s last meeting for the year was last Thursday and it was a very productive meeting. One of the items discussed was the aerodrome and we will be proceeding with the first stage of the subdivision in the near future. We also had a presentation from Chief Planner for NSW, Gary White, who discussed the Central West and Orana Regional Plan and provided information on mega trends. It was very informative and we appreciate Gary taking the time to come to Forbes. Australia Day plans are well underway and our Australia Day Ambassador is former Governing and Artistic Director of the Ensemble Theatre, Sandra Bates. Nominations are still open for the Citizen of the Year awards with nomination forms available at the council office or online at www.forbes. nsw.gov.au Don’t forget to have your say on the Forbes Community Plan 2027 by completing the survey online at www.forbes. localvoices.com.au. Christmas Message from the Phoenix Publisher - Chery Newsom: I would like to extend a very big thank you to all our readers, contributors, advertisers, contractors and the team at the Phoenix Group of Newspapers for making 2016 such a successful one. Despite the changes in the media landscape, we decided to launch two new free local newspapers in Parkes and Hilltops (Young) in March this year. With this came the normal challenges and without the support of all those mentioned we would not have been able to accomplish what we did. Next year will be even bigger and better with the launch of some new features, an app, and new projects. We would ask that you continue to support us, as we strive for excellence and being involved at a local level in these communities. Remember that we are your local voice in the communities we serve. We wish everybody a very Merry Christmas and best wishes for a successful 2017.

With the final week of 2016 upon us, it’s a time to reflect, but for some this time of year is challenging. Fortunately, many online and phone services, like headspace and Cancer Council will remain open this festive season. The holiday season can pose many challenges for people affected by cancer. The new Cancer Council Online Community provides the opportunity to connect, share experiences, and find information and support in a safe forum. It’s available 24/7 from any online device, regardless of location. Cancer Council NSW’s Lead Supportive Care Manager, Hannah Baird said the online community aimed to reduce isolation by encouraging people to share their stories with others in similar situations. “What we are seeing through our peer support programs is more and more people are turning to digital platforms for information and support, to connect with others who can relate to what they are experiencing.” The Cancer Council 13 11 20 telephone information and support service is available over the holiday period. For more information visit: www.cancercouncil.com. au/OC The beginning of a new year can also be a turbulent time for many young people. They may be facing some big life changes like starting a new school, awaiting exam results to get into higher education, or commencing employment. When normal routines change and daily structure is altered it can cause pressure. During these times, it is valuable for fam-

#MONTEfamousreview EWAH – EVERYTHING FADES TO BLUE Everything Fades to Blue is the debut album from EWAH. EWAH and her band, The Vision Of Paradise, will transport you into your own personal mental film clip, generating a strong beat, beautiful picky guitars and of course EWAH’s ethereal voice. You can’t help but be carried to another realm. Every track on Everything Fades to Blue will have you intrigued and will build with layers of dark brooding pop, with EWAH cutting the darkness with the light of her vocals. It is the perfect album to have playing while looking for inspiration or on a Sunday afternoon. A must have for those times of deep contemplation.

I really enjoy meeting a wide variety of people and hopefully sending them back out to see the world more clearly. How do you start your day? Nothing beats a dense shot flat white with Girra Girra Sourdough and their free range eggs. What makes your day? Anything that makes me laugh, or being with friendly, happy people. FLANNERY’S Pharmacy
15 Minutes Is All It Takes
On a summer’s day in Australia, sunburn can occur in as little as 15 minutes. All types of sunburn, whether serious or mild, can cause permanent and irreversible skin damage. This could lay the groundwork for skin cancers to develop. Skin cancer rates in Australia are among the highest in the world. Between 95-99% of skin cancers are caused by exposure to the sun. Men are more likely to get sunburnt than women, because they spend more time outside during peak UV times and are less likely to use sun protection. Skin cells in the top layer of skin produce a pigment called melanin, which gives skin its natural colour. When skin is exposed to UV radiation, more melanin is produced, causing the skin to darken and tan. A tan is a sign that the skin has been damaged from UV radiation. It is important to remember that tanning without burning can still cause skin damage, premature skin ageing and skin cancer. UV radiation can cause irreparable damage to the genes in the skin’s cells. Each time you expose your skin to UV radiation from the sun or from a solarium, you increase your risk of developing skin cancer. To prevent sunburn, use a broad spectrum sunscreen such as Suntivity SPF 50+ and reapply every two hours, particularly after swimming. Use protective clothes, hats and eyewear to limit exposure. Flannery’s Pharmacy is hosting a sun clinic on Monday, 23rd January 2017 from 10am to 3pm. The visiting clinic nurse will assess your personal risk factors, assess your current level of sun damage and give you personalised and practical advice. Contact 6852 1111 for an appointment. Christmas Time Is A Time Of Giving
Winston Churchill said: “We make a living by what we get. We make a life by what we give.” Christmas time is all about giving and a few local businesses have made sure there is the opportunity to follow Winston Churchill’s advice and give to others. Ian Simpson & Co. Real Estate wants to make certain that Christmas is a happy time for everyone. Last year they held a Christmas Present Drive for Ronald McDonald House. “This year Havannah House will be the recipient,” said Ian. Many people have donated a gift for children up to five years of age, which Ian will deliver to Havannah House today. Forbes Services Memorial Club (FSMC) has had a Community Giving Tree for many years to provide the Forbes people the opportunity to donate gifts for the less fortunate. “This year we will again be donating the gifts to Havannah House,” said David Fitzgerald, CEO of FSMC. Cameras To Bring Back Serenity At Wiradjuri Dreaming Centre Nationals’ Federal Member for Riverina, Michael McCormack, announced more than $10,000 funding for closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras at the Wiradjuri Dreaming Centre in Forbes on Tuesday. Michael told a small gathering at the Wiradjuri Dreaming Centre the Forbes Council would receive $13,600 to install two solarpowered cameras. “Serenity, that’s what this place is, serenity,” said Aileen Allen of the centre where the integrated philosophy of the Wiradjuri people that connects them with all living things and the land can be experienced. Unfortunately, the serenity has been broken too many times by vandalism and antisocial behaviour. Aileen and Forbes Mayor, Graeme Miller as well as Forbes Shire General Manager, Danny Green welcomed the funding provided by the Safer Streets Program. The program supports communities at the grass roots level to boost crime prevention. Chief Inspector of Police, Nick Weyland, said: “CCTV can assist in enhancing perceptions of safety, deterring criminal and anti-social behaviour, as well as helping to apprehend those responsible for crime in the community.” Aileen thanked the Forbes police for their prompt assistance in the past and said
she hoped with the CCTV cameras working both the Aboriginal, Torres Strait and Australian flags would remain on the flag poles. They have been stolen a total of seven times. Michael offered that his office would replace the missing flags. “Only safe communities can be strong and prosperous, and the best way to tackle crime and anti-social behaviour is to prevent it from happening,” said the MP. “Most importantly the funds used to pay for this program are from the proceeds of the Crime Account – that is money taken from criminals and reinvested into the community to prevent more crimes.” By Dianne Collie
Attending the funding announcement were from the left Chief Inspector Nick Weyland, President of Forbes Historical Society, Bruce Adams; Senior Constable, Daniel Greef; Forbes Shire GM, Danny Green; Eileen Allen, Mayor Graeme Miller and Nationals Federal Member for Riverina, Michael McCormack.

Ham Day Entices Golfers
Saturday’s play was an Individual Stableford sponsored by Kenny’s Baa-Moo-Oink. The field of 57 players were keen to snare themselves a ham. The A-division was dominated by Todd Callaghan who managed two very fine 9’s of 37 each amassing 40 points. Peter Grayson could only lament the missed opportunities in his round of 38, with two wipes. The B-division saw Brett Slack-Smith, who played early and posted 41 points, finish ahead of Stuart French with 40 points. The ball sweep went to 35 on countback, including those above plus: 38 – Bruce Squires, Peter Barnes; 37 – Steve Grallelis, Barry Parker; 36 – Paul Kay, Niel Duncan, Michael Wood Jnr; 35 – Rob Webb, Peter Dawson, Jeff Haley, Peter Cowhan. NTP’s: 1st – Scott Kirkman, 18th – Garry
Johnson. Scott got his Sunday’s play was the Stableford Medley with a small field but strong contest, this was won by Phil Duke with 38 points, closely followed by Dave Rhodes on 37. There was no ball sweep, and only one NTP. That was on the 18th taken out by Laurie O’Connor. The semi-finals of the Wallace Cup were played and contested by Dan Bayley vs Ian Bown, and Lee Grierson vs Marty Cahill. Dan was victorious over Ian, while Marty was fortunate to score a win before Lee could gain an advantage on the longer final holes. On Saturday the annual presentations were made to Men’s and Mixed competition winners from the year’s events. Undoubtedly the highlights for the Ladies were the accolades to Julie Hurkett and Briana Dun-
