Cowal Gold Will Glitter For Next 15 Years
The board of Evolution Mining Limited has approved a multi-million dollar investment in the Cowal Gold Operation to secure the life of the operation for at least the next 15 years. The investment of approximately $270 million at the mine near West Wyalong will increase total production by 1.2 million ounces, the company announced yesterday. The Board decision follows recent approval from the NSW Department of Planning and Environment to extend the life of Cowal by eight years to 2032. Executive Chairman Jake Klein said: “When Evolution purchased Cowal in July 2015, a key objective was to reinvigorate exploration with the aim of extending the mine’s life beyond its scheduled closure in 2024. We are delighted that the success of our recent drilling and regulatory approval

has enabled us to deliver on this goal. This significant new investment will take place over the next four years, securing the longterm future of the Cowal Gold Operation and help provide job security for our local mine employees, contractors and suppliers.” The new investment will deliver two major projects, the E42 Stage H cutback and the Dual Leach project. The E42 Stage H Cutback will widen and deepen the existing open pit at a cost of $230 million. A further $35 to $40 million investment in the Dual Leach project will add an additional leaching circuit to the processing plant to increase gold production by up to 14,000 ounces per year. Cowal employs approximately 400 fulltime employees and contractors.

MAYORAL NOTES Council’s new committee structure is now in place and there will be five core committees that meet as required to cover the key focus areas of economy, environment, community and spaces, infrastructure and leadership and governance. Over the next five weeks I will discuss each committee and its purpose. The Economic Development Committee’s purpose is to support Forbes Shire Council by recommending programs, projects or actions that have the potential to progress the Community Strategic Plan in relation to sustainable economic development within the Forbes Shire. The Councillors representing this committee are Phyllis Miller, Jeff Nicholson and Steve Karaitiana. On Thursday, 2nd March, Council is hosting a Back to Business Week networking event for the Forbes business community. The guest speaker for the evening is NSW Government Department of Planning’s Chief Planner Gary White. Gary has a lot of great information to share and it will be an extremely beneficial night for the Forbes community to attend.
We have something in common this week: we survived the hottest day on record in Forbes! According to the Weatherzone website the temperature reached 46.7 degrees Celsius on Saturday. The previous highest temperature was in 2004 with 44.6. We hope you took care to look after elderly neighbours and relatives, as well as animals during the heat. It is not yet over - we are going for 40 degrees today. Please stay vigilant, especially when working with machinery that can spark a bush fire. We start our new Bush Telegraph column on page 5 today for the communities of Trundle, Tullamore and Bogan Gate. Thank you to everyone who sent us contributions. Some of the volunteers who helped to make the Havannah House Christmas lunch a memorable day for 177 people.
Christmas Lunch 2016: Havannah House provided lunch on Christmas Day to 177 people including volunteers, for the 17th year in a row. The Town Hall was decorated in a candy canes theme to create a festive atmosphere. There was music and activities for the children. Nibbles and drinks were served first, followed by a smorgasbord of delicious and beautifully presented food: a choice of five meats, salads and desserts. The Forbes community donated gifts for children, teens and adults. The lunch was made possible by the generous donations of individuals, community groups and businesses, while the Forbes Shire Council donated the use of the Town Hall. Havannah House would like to thank all who contributed to this event and to the group of dedicated volunteers who prepared and presented a very special lunch for a most appreciative group of recipients. Movie trip: Neighbourhood Central’s first Monthly Movie trip to Orange will be on Thursday, 23rd February to see Hidden Figures. The day includes lunch in Orange. ANZAC Competition: The Nationals’ Member for Riverina and Minister for Small Business Michael McCormack is inviting students from the Central West to participate in his popular ANZAC Day writing competition. “Each year (this being the seventh), I produce a commemorative booklet about ANZAC Day, which is distributed to every household in the electorate. A highlight for many is the ANZAC writing competition for students.” The Minister wrote to more than 120 primary and high schools in the electorate encouraging students to contribute an original piece on “ANZAC Day in the Riverina and Central West”. Two winners will be chosen from each quarter of the electorate. Entries must be received by the Wagga Wagga electorate office by Monday, 6th March. Forbes Handicraft Centre: The next market day is tomorrow at the front of the shop in Lachlan Street, from 9am to 1 pm. The Trundle Royal Far West (RFW) Sunshine Club has offered a vital service to the community for 77 years. The Trundle Op Shop supports Trundle Central School in providing the Come & See speech and language programs for students with speech problems. After students have been individually assessed at the RFW Head Office in Manly, they can utilise the programs in Trundle with trained staff to save parents the long trip to Sydney for treatment. The Trundle branch also support other functions and events support of the Royal
Far West. All money raised goes directly to the children’s services. The club meets on the second Tuesday of each month in the Op Shop at 1pm. Packing a healthy lunch that’ll be all gobbled up is a daily challenge. Packing a healthy school lunchbox might be daunting, but the benefits are enormous. A good diet is essential for growth and development in children, but also for giving them the energy to be kids! A key change for kids at the start of the school year is the transition from holiday play to sitting and concentrating back at school. Fuelling them with the right balance of nutrients will play a part in keeping them energised and focused throughout the day. So how do you get the right balance of nutrients? Keep it simple by including something from each of the five core food groups: veggies, fruit, meat or meat alternatives, dairy and wholegrains. Pay special attention to packing enough vegetables and dairy. Australian Bureau of Statistics data shows that vegetables and dairy foods are the two most under-consumed food groups among Australians. If you’re worried about adding dairy to the lunchbox in the hot weather, opt for harder cheeses such as cheddar, which keep better and pop a frozen ice pack or flavoured milk in the lunchbox to keep it cool until lunchtime.

Four New Citizens Celebrate Highlight Back To Business Week Of Migration Story Forbes Mayor Graeme Miller donned his mayoral chain for the very first time last Wednesday when he welcomed four new Australian citizens at a special ceremony at Town Hall. Emma Gamble from England and Murphy George from India with two of her children Sydney and Stephanie Sanu were welcomed as Australian Citizens before family and friends. “I was a little nervous standing on stage in front of everyone,” said Murphy, “but it was worth it as I am just so happy and proud to be able to say I am an Australian citizen.” The Mayor said Australian citizenship was an important step in any migration story and it was about making an ongoing commitment to Australia and all that our country stands for. The Mayor led Emma and Murphy in their citizenship pledge. Murphy’s daughters, Sydney and Stephanie, then joined them on stage to receive their Australian Citizenship certificates to the applause of their loved ones. After the ceremony the new citizens and
their loved ones looked happy and proud in reaching such an important milestone. The Nationality and Citizenship Act came into effect on 26th January 1949. This important piece of legislation meant that for the first time we could truly call ourselves Australians. Since this first citizenship ceremony 68 years ago, over 4.6 million people have chosen to become Australian citizens. By Dianne Collie

How long have you lived in Forbes and what do you like about living here? Since 1978… nearly 40 years. I love Forbes (except for the heat) for the ease of driving around without too much traffic and finding parking easily; walking around Lake Forbes; our medical services; heading to the supermarket for bread and milk and walking out an hour later with a full trolley because I ran into so many people I know; and the genuine concern people have for each other. Where do you work and what do you enjoy most about your work? I work at Catholic Healthcare Jemalong Residential Village (JRV). I love all the different personalities that help make our unique culture. There is a lot of laughter in our corridors, and yes there are sad times, however they are special for those who live at JRV and the family and friends who visit. I truly love being able to meet people when they are in human need. What do you do to unwind after work and on weekends? Time with family and friends, road tripping and researching with Mr Google for new travel destinations. If you could have a super power, what would it be? That is a no brainer! Through faith I am strong in God’s mighty power. What is your pet hate? Snoring! Other people snoring! I don’t snore, at least I have never heard myself snore. Another one is slamming doors! Tell us about your best holiday ever. My best and most memorable holiday was to Antarctica. We sailed for 22 days and had 32 landings and crossed Drake Passage, the worst ocean crossing in the world. I will never forget the ice-covered mountain peaks, the iceberg crystal cities, the storms, whales, the hundreds of thousands of penguins, the isolation - it all took my breath away.

Big Decisions For Separated Parents The breakdown of a relationship can emotionally be very hard for all parties. This is sometimes made worse by uncertainty over what you should be doing when it comes to making decisions about your children. There are often big decisions about where the children are going to live and what time the other parent may have with the kids. Under the Family Law Act it is assumed that parents have equal shared parental responsibility, whether they are the parent who has the children living with them or only spending some weekend time with them. This means both parents have to decide on the major long-term issues. These could include what name a child has, what religion the child practises and major medical issues. Everyday decisions, such as what a child eats, what a child wears are the responsibility of the parent the children are with at the time. The only time a parent doesn’t have equal shared parental responsibility for the children is when a court order states otherwise. If a court order states a parent has sole parental responsibility, then they do not have to consult with the other parent on major long term issues. In a situation where you do not have a court order, the other parent still has equal shared parental responsibility. It is very important to know where you stand in relation to your obligation to communicate and consult with the other parent regarding important long-term decisions for your children. Local DJ Monte is planning on stirring up the indie music air waves this year being accepted into the Australian Film, Television and Radio School. The radio personality, who also writes a weekly music review in The Forbes Phoenix, has been a volunteer presenter at 2LVR for two years where he presents two programs: Uncharted Wednesday Nights and Monte Rocks Your Friday Night. He is passionate about Australian music and for his Wednesday show he interviews three independent Australian musicians and plays brand new Australian Music that has been released in the last seven days. Friday’s is a rock request show where he plays rock music from the 80s’, 90’s, 00’s and today. “That was the show that sparked my love of presenting radio,” said Monte. Monte is going to have a busy year travelling to Sydney every week to attend two weekday evenings and Saturday work-
shops for the Advanced Diploma of Radio he will be doing. “I’m pretty excited as to what this could lead to.” Monte’s diploma entails learning how to operate a modern radio studio, creating a station sound, recording and editing audio, refining his announcing and presentation skills and how to create digital content for online and social media. “This will make my Wednesday night show stand out and hopefully become a better platform for indie artists to have their music played,” said Monte. His passion for his work at 2LVR has been a driving force for Monte to make this big commitment. “I want to see how I can be better at what I do. I want to help all the great indie musicians in Australia by highlighting their music, and interviewing them to show the listening audience how much work goes into creating music.” By Maggi Barnard

Sport’s Glamour Night Around Corner
The quality of nominations received for 2016 Sports Awards has delighted the Forbes Sportsperson of the Year Association (SOYA). The Annual Presentation Dinner takes place on Saturday, 4th March at the Forbes Services Memorial Club at 6.30pm. SOYA is dedicated to recognising the accomplishments of local athletes, administrators and officials, and to thank the many volunteers who ensure children and adults of all ages have access to some of the best sporting facilities and competitions in NSW. Awards being contested include the Junior and Senior Sportsperson, All Rounder, Coach/Trainer, Referee / Umpire / Official, Administrator, Team and the Forbes Sportsperson and Runner Up for 2016. The overall winner of the Central West Credit Union Monthly Achievers Award will also be announced, as well as the President’s Award, Phillip Adams Encouragement Award, Merit Awards, School and Special Sports Awards. The calibre of the nominations received for all the awards was of a very high standard making the job of the independent judging panel extremely difficult. Lachlan Dragons Celebrate Chinese New Year
The Lachlan Dragons competed at Sydney’s Darling Harbour last weekend in the Chinese New Year regatta. Fourteen paddlers made the annual trip to compete in the premier, mixed and women’s races. They were joined by the Orange based Pinnacle Dragons to fill the boat. First timers Mary Laksito, Liz Mitchell, Chris Kronenberg, Bev Pengilly and Ainslie Toole were joined by old hands Warren Edwards, Donna Edwards, Beth Thomas, Bill Thomas, Robyn Stephens, Neil Stephens, Deb Abela, Deb Tooley and Deb Churchill. Although the team didn’t gain a place in any of the finals, the squad performed bril-
liantly in balmy 39 degrees Celsius. They finished five of the seven races in sub one minute time for the 200m events. Next month the Lachlan Dragons will compete in the Canberra regatta, once again combining with Colour City Orange paddlers in the mixed team. Six Lachlan Dragon club members have gained selection in the Western Region team. They will compete at NSW Championships on 26th March in Penrith. Coach Kristin Read and assistant coach Rebecca Roach are looking forward to coaching their first representative team together. The FNA 15 years representative team will also start training on 23rd February with new coach Isi Cowhan.
All representative teams of 15, 13 and 12 years will play at the Netball NSW State Age Championships in July school holidays. The Provisional Grading has been released with both the 15 and 13 years teams in Division 3. Courses for coaching and umpiring have gone online. The second week of the Pennants 2017 season, played at Bathurst last weekend, saw the Division 3 and 4 teams winning against Duntryleague teams both with 3/2. John Zannes was a strong player for the 3’s, while newcomers Gus Coles and Garry Pymont had success in the 4’s. The Division 2 team playing Parkes, had a difficult day and lost 4/1. The Division 1 team had a bye. In Forbes the hot weather made for tough conditions, but players recorded good scores. Saturday’s Stableford event, contested by a field of 26 players, was won by Max Haley (A Division) with 40 points. Barry Parker was runner-up with 38 points. The B Division went to Bruce Chandler (36 points) and runner-up Frank Donohoe (35 points). The ball sweep went to 35 points on count back: 38 – R Nixon; 35 – P Dawson. The NTP’s went to: 9th – D Culley, 18th – J Haley. There were only two 2’s, both scored on the 3rd – Paul Pymont and Mark Watts. Sunday’s Stableford Medley field was very small with Phil Duke the winner (36 points). The NTP’s went to: 9th – S Kirkman; 18th – L O’Connor. By Short Putt
