A Marvellous Life Of Music And Memories At 106 years young, Irene (Rene) Francis is not only the longest living resident in Forbes, but she also has an admirable story to tell. When The Forbes Phoenix caught up with her this week she was knitting away with her daughter Marguerite at the Jemalong Residential Village for the Wrap with Love charity. Rene was prepared with photos to share to she took out was of her at 16 with her beloved violin. She gave up school to take up music professionally and played for a broadcasting station in Sydney prior to the establishment of the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC). “We performed on air,” recalls Rene. The announcer, Mr Corcoran, described her as “not quite as tall as my watch chain”.

When we think of Mum we think of music.” The next photo is of a debonair Rene and her husband, Arthur, after their marriage. They were married during the Great Depression. There was no fanfare and none was needed. They moved to Forbes in 1936 from Sydney. “I was fascinated by the dust rolling like waves on the unsealed road driving into Forbes. I held my daughter Barbara up so she could see,” said Rene.

The Phoenix team gave their publisher, Cheryl Newsom a surprise farewell lunch last week. At the back (L-R) are Maggi Barnard, Kelly Breen, Dianne Collie, Sarah Maynard, Lisa Starr and Raen Fraser. In front (L-R) are Sylvie Maloney, Taniel Thornberry, Cheryl Newsom and Rosalea Buttigieg.

Always Something New For Cheryl The courageous and committed woman solely responsible for the establishment of four new community newspapers in the Central West, has decided to write the ending to one chapter of her illustrious career. Cheryl Newsom, Publisher of The Phoenix Group of Newspapers, handed over the reins to her daughter Sarah Maynard this week to retire. Cheryl marched in where others feared to tread during a time of downsizing in the newspaper industry worldwide, and within three years had four successful newspapers up and running. ago after a successful media career in the Big Smoke to be closer to her family. She continued with her media consultancy business Inxcess for a few years, and then decided she wanted to do something locally. When The Canowindra Phoenix came up for sale in 2013 she jumped at the opportunity, and had her very own newspaper for

The Canowindra Phoenix was transformed from a small four-page paper to a 12-page weekly publication with the motto: Live Local, Love Local, Shop Local. The Phoenix recipe proved successful and there was no stopping Chez, as she is also known. The Forbes Phoenix was launched on 3rd July 2015, and in March last year two more newspapers saw the light: The Parkes Phoenix and The Hilltops Phoenix. She was a woman on a mission, and would often say: “Watch out Fairfax we are hot on your tail!” Chez is a sales guru at heart and selling is her real passion. She was instrumental in launching the Canowindra Tourism Booklet, the Blayney Tourism Booklet, as well as calendar and rainfall charts for all four newspapers. She already has some new jobs in the pipeline for retirement, but for now The Phoenix team wishes her safe travelling and time to just chill out.

A new mobile phone tower was launched at Warroo (almost 50km west of Forbes) last Friday to improve mobile phone coverage in the area. Minister for Small Business and member for Riverina, Michael McCormack, said at the launch: “After lobbying by the local community and the former local member John Cobb, this tower was able to be delivered under Round 1 of the Federal Government Mobile Black Spot Program.” An investment of $100 million for Round 1 will deliver more than 500 new mobile base stations in regional and remote areas. to the villages, farmers and local residents,” said Michael. Even more so because it supports the Rural Fire Service and other emergency services, enabling them to be contacted and connected to each other when travelling through this area and attending to emergency situations. Telstra Countrywide Area General Manager, Chris Taylor agreed: “Expanding coverage to the regions ensures locals can keep in contact with family and friends and run their businesses more effectively.”

New Owners At Choices Flooring If you are building a new home or planning to do renovations, Choices Flooring in Parkes has new owners and will beat any written quote for the month of March. Michelle and Richard Bligh, who recently moved back to their hometown from the Sunshine Coast, took over Choices Flooring on 16th January. “We owned a business in Caloundra selling custom made screens, blinds and awnings for the past nine years,” said Michelle. The family sold the business on the Sunshine Coast and took a three-month trip to Cape York before relocating to Parkes. “I grew up in Parkes – my parents are Neil and Janelle Unger – and we wanted to be closer to family and give our three children the opportunity to grow up in a great rural community and enjoy a laid back country lifestyle,” said Michelle. When Choices was up for sale, it was too good an opportunity to pass up, “as we had been working in a similar business environment”. According to Michelle they are looking forward to making a great business even better. They are starting by doing a full makeover of the showroom, getting new samples, as well as introducing a mobile showroom to give better service to outlying areas.

BACK TO PARKES…The Bligh family are (L-R) Richard, Michelle, Grace, Harry and William.

Choices Flooring services Parkes, Forbes, Trundle, Condobolin and other surrounding areas. The new owners have also kept the three members of staff and one contractor at Choices Flooring to continue the level of experience and local knowledge offered by the business.

The Low Down On Low E Glass In The Central West we have a great climate for at least six months cerned with temperature extremes. On the other hand, our summers can get very warm and our winters rather cold. Experience has shown the experts at the Glassplace that Low E grey tinted glass performs well in both summer and winter. How does Low E tinted glass work? (Other names are smart glass, pyrolytic glass, or comfort glass.) Low E grey glass cuts down the U value of a window or door. This is the amount of heat moving through the glass due to the difference in temperature: can therefore reduce your heating bill and your cooling costs. Low E grey glass also reduces the total solar radiation comSHGC. It also reduces glare to make your home more comfortable in summer. The lower the numbers, the get from Low E glass. If you still feel a bit confused about this glass, but want to know more, why not drop into the new Glassplace showroom in Clarke Street, Parkes. They will show you examples of Low E Glass in full sized windows so you can see what it looks like. You can also have a go at their radiant heat display to actually feel the difference Low E glass can make in your home. Give them a call today!

CWD would like to congratulate Bart and the Team on their new parts showroom.

It has been 25 years of continuous growth and expansion for Midpro Engineering & Irrigation. Ian Bartholomaeus, better known as Bart, started the business when he returned to Forbes after a couple of years away in 1992, after some time away gaining experience and knowledge. “We were only two people in the beginning and today we have more than 20 staff trial and agricultural sectors, as well as a bit in the mining and transportation industries too.” As of ten years ago, irrigation has become a big part of the business. “We are

design, manufacture and install just about anything. No job is too big or too small for us – from domestic needs to commercial projects, from a brainstorm to a thunderstorm,” said Bart. Bart is also a big advocate for the training of apprentices. “We have had more than 60 apprentices work with us over 25 and metal fabrication trades.” After 25 years Bart is proud on what Midpro has become: “We have a reputation as an inventive business, we are great at problem solving and with a fully equipped

New Showroom Expands Business Midpro has continued to expand over the years and the latest addition is a showroom and retail shop that opened just before Christmas last year. “We felt there was a need for this, not only to service our own business by having enough items in stock for breakdowns, but also to give customers quick access to what they need,” said Bart. The well-stocked showroom at the Midpro premises has everything from couplings, pumps, sprinklers, trailer parts, pulleys, gearboxes, drive shafts, nuts and bolts, wheels and rims, belts, a full range of hy“This new addition to our business has been welcomed by many people,” said Bart. “They are pleasantly surprised by the amount and variety of our stock on hand.” Bart said the shop meant people could

It has literally shaped our business and makes it more enjoyable.” Midpro acquired extensive CAD drawing programs on computer to be able to give customers a more realistic picture of what they will build for them. “Technology is what makes our work more enjoyable. The fact that we are able to see a job from a rough sketch on a piece of paper to designing it on computer and then manufacturing it in the workshop is very rewarding.”

Technology Makes It Enjoyable Looking back over 25 years there are some highlights that stand out and times you will fondly remember. Of the thousands of jobs Midpro has done over the years, the moment when it all are the most enjoyable and memorable moments for Bart. The plasma-cutting machine has brought a new aspect into the business. “It is no longer just about the men. We can do decorative art and have women coming in asking for signs to be made or arty cut outs they want in their gardens.” Bart also remembers 2006 when one of his apprentices, Jeremy Grandsen won a gold medal for welding in Helsinki at an international World Skills Competition. “There is also the satisfaction of following the careers of apprentices who have moved on to see how they develop over the years and where they end up working,” said Bart. “They usually come and say hi when they are back in Forbes.” Midpro also won the Small Business of the Year award in 2006 at the NSW Trade

#MONTEfamousreview Today is World Wildlife Day. In Forbes we share our environment with 37 different species of native mammals and 260 species of native birds. Here are tips for dealing with injured or orphaned natives. 1. Never approach injured wildlife if your own safety is at risk. 2. DO NOT try to handle snakes, goannas, eagles, falcons, hawks, large kangaroos or wallabies. Call WIRES for assistance. NEVER TOUCH BATS – they can carry Lyssavirus. If you are scratched or bitten by a bat seek medical advice. 3. If you have found a sick, injured or orphaned animal, remove any threat to the animal. 4. If it is safe to do so, contain the animal in a warm, dark, quiet place. You can gently wrap the animal in a towel and place it in a ventilated box with a lid. 5. Do not give the animal any food or water, unless instructed to by a vet or WIRES. 6. Call WIRES on 1300 556 686. Make sure you note the exact location where the animal was found. Many species are highly territorial and must be released at the same location. The WIRES Wildlife Rescue App is a fast way to get wildlife advice and rescue assistance from WIRES seven days a week.

It is very quiet, although sometimes a little too quiet, but I am close to my two grandchildren. They make my day, every day. What did you enjoy about your job and what are your plans now that you are stepping down as publisher? I have been the publisher of the Phoenix Group of Newspapers for four years, and have really enjoyed the weekly challenges. I love meeting the business people and learning more about their business. I plan to do a lot of travelling, and will be available for businesses and big media clients for consultancy initiatives. What do you do to unwind after work and on weekends? I do a lot of reading, and love my garden. What are you really good at? I believe that one of my strengths is my sales ability – this still continues to give me a buzz. What is your pet hate? People who do not respond to emails and phone calls. Tell us about your best holiday ever. I have had a lot of exciting holidays, although some of my best holidays would include, time in Italy at Easter with my two girls and a wildlife game drive north of Durban in South Africa. I am looking forward to my holiday this year to Italy, Spain, Portugal and London.

Brendon Chattaway, one of the three coaches at the barefoot skiing clinic, takes Kye Gosling through his paces at the Forbes Aquatic Centre.

Skiers Put Bare Feet Forward In Forbes Nearly 70 barefoot skiers from all over NSW attended a coaching clinic at the Forbes Aquatic Centre and Bundaburrah over three days last week. The skiers came from Forbes, Parkes, Oberon, Gundagai, Narrandera and Liverpool. “The Forbes barefoot coaching sessions are growing and the feedback has been sensational,” said Jim Cronin. “We have already taken bookings for the clinic in 2018.” The sessions grew from one last year, to two this year, but due to high demand a third had to be added. The Forbes Phoenix met with some participants last Friday. Toby Cox (10) said he was “feeling really good about attending the coaching clinic”. Toby is a competent water skier but was trying bare foot skiing for the

on Thursday using the boom bar and was looking forward to stepping up and taking the rope behind the boat. Peter and Leanne Gosling travelled all the way from Sydney on Friday morning to bring their son Kye (15) to the clinic. “We are very proud parents,” said Leanne, and when Kye ranked third in the Junior Boys NSW Barefoot Championship last weekend they were over the moon. There were three coaches at the clin-

Forbes Locals’ Barefeet Firmly Planted On Water The third NSW Barefoot Championship held at the Forbes Aquatic Centre last weekend was a fabulous success with 43 competitors. Locals Jono Collits, Tas Spackman, Tom Morrison, Joff King, Tim Burke, Angus King and Jim Cronin wowed their family and friends with their skill. “It is so great barefooting to a home crowd,” said Tom. “Everyone can watch all your tricks.” Forbes has a unique advantage over other venues as all spectators can see the whole event. During the trick events, competitors hear a siren when on their two feet when they had to perform technique tricks for 15 seconds. The crowd was amazed at many of the tricks including skiing backwards, turns and butt slides. Jumps where also undertaken which is not an easy feat without skis.
