Auxiliary Recognises Milestones The Young Hospital Auxiliary has recognised two of its longest serving members, with Madge Styles and Cathy Shannon bringing up milestones within the organisation. Mrs Styles celebrated an impressive 30 years with the Auxiliary, while Mrs Shannon made it halfway to that mark by bringing up her 15th anniversary. The achievements of both of these women were recognised at the Auxiliary’s Annual Meeting on August 4, with Mrs Styles receiving a ‘bar’ as her award, and Mrs Shannon receiving a certificate. Mrs Styles, 87, joined the Auxiliary when she was 57 after having worked as a hospital nurse. She said the past 30 years had been extremely rewarding, and she has no plans on retiring from her post within the Auxiliary.

“All I wanted to do was help the community, and at the time I joined, I thought the Hospital Auxiliary needed the most help,” she said. “It’s an important organisation, and you never know when people will need the hospital.” “I initially joined with a friend, but I always wanted to help out with the hospital.” Mrs Styles spent a number of years as the Auxiliary’s Program Officer, submitting small articles on Auxiliary happenings to the local newspaper. Other than this, she only spent one year on the committee, and chose not to hold a higher position such as President or Secretary. She said she has always best served the Auxiliary doing hands-on work. “I love it, and I love helping,” she said. By Joshua Matic

This week marks 100 days since the amalgamation of NSW Councils and a lot has happened in the development of the new Hilltops Council in that short span of time. The Hilltops Council committed to engaging with the community and to that end we chose early on to meet with our residents face-to-face, update them on transition processes and provide informa-

tion on $1 million in community grants that we have to offer. The Stronger Communities Fund has now closed and Council received 110 applications for funding. I am excited to be part of the assessment panel and learn more about what our individual towns and villages want. Another big announcement this week is the $10,000 tourism partnership between Hilltops Council and VisitCanberra. This crossborder collaboration agreement will drive visitors to the ACT and Southern NSW and includes sponsorship of events in the Hilltops Region such as the Young National Cherry Festival, the Boorowa Irish Woolfest and the Jugiong Sgt Parry Memorial Day.

Innovative Teaching Model Opens in Young

Member for Cootamundra Katrina Hodgkinson has announced the State government will invest a total of $666,392 for four projects at public reserves in the Young district under the Public Reserves Management Fund Program (PRMF). Mrs Hodgkinson said these projects would benefit each place that is receiving improvement works, and highlighted the importance of these works for the town of Young. “I am pleased to announce these projects, which are for some of our most valued public spaces in the Young district,” Mrs Hodgkinson said. “This funding is for maintenance works and general upgrades to look after our local Trust buildings and reserves so that the community can continue to enjoy these areas for many years to come.” Mrs Hodgkinson said the four projects in the Young region under the 2016/17 PRMF

included $600,000 for upgrade of the grandstand at the Young Showground to current building standards, $38,092 for repairs at the Young Community Arts Centre, $17,000 for earth works to prevent erosion at the Tipperary Gully Recreational Reserve, and $11,300 for repairs and painting of the Bribbaree Memorial Hall. “Applications were very strong this year, so the success we’ve had under this program for the Young area is a result of the high-quality of submissions put forward by the relevant management groups,” Mrs Hodgkinson said. She added there were a total of 22 successful projects throughout the Cootamundra electorate totalling over $1.4 million. “This program is yet another example of the State government’s commitment to the cultural, sporting, economic and recreational life of communities across New South Wales,” she said.

The TAFE NSW Riverina Institute Young campus will have access to new online courses starting this month, with a new teaching delivery model coming into play. The new model, known as ‘connected learning’, will allow students to complete courses in Accounts Administration, Bookkeeping and Accounting, by studying in part online and in person via video link. This means students will not have to study entirely online, and gives them the chance to ask questions in a classroom-like setting during video link sessions. The first 10-14 weeks of the online courses will be taught via a video link by the course facilitator. This will see students in Young virtually join other students from the Riverina Institute’s 18 other campuses. Staff have developed and refined the unique teaching model in recent years, to provide extra support for students using both physical and digital environments for their learning. Riverina Institute’s Manager of Learning Innovation, Jess Chalmers, said combining the physical and digital learning environments had many benefits for students. “Using this model we should be able to increase student numbers in courses, but more importantly provide our communities with more choice of courses and help increase completion rates with more support being offered at the local campus,” she said. It is hoped that the new delivery model will be used for as many as 39 courses by next year. “I hope the technology will create sparks of other innovative practices that will facilitate more connected learning practices for our students, industries and communities,” Ms Chalmers said.

On Saturday September 24th there will be a public tasting of wines entered in the inaugural Hilltops Wine Show. This show is open to any wine producer who has a wine produced from grapes grown in the “Hilltops” wine region. The wines will be judged in Griffith from September 6th - 8th by judges at the NSW Regional Wine Show. All Hilltops wine entries will be on show at the Young Town Hall between 4pm and 6pm on September 24th. Tickets to this event can be purchased online (at Eventbite/Hilltops Wine Show) or from Gilberts (Boorowa St) at a cost of $20. Entry at the door to the Town Hall will be $25. A results booklet will be provided on entry to accompany the tasting but the ‘trophy’ winners will not be announced until 5pm on

Saturday 24th September. McWilliams is the major Wine Show sponsor and five local businesses have each sponsored a trophy. These are as follows: • Best White Wine sponsored by Mellish Insurance. • Best Shiraz sponsored by Thompson’s Rural Supplies • Best Cab Sav sponsored by Donges IGA • Best Italian Varietal sponsored by Landmark • Best Red Blend/Other Red Wine sponsored by Delta Agribusiness. One of these trophy winners will also be awarded the Peter Robertson Trophy for the ‘Hilltops Wine of the Year’. The Peter Robertson Trophy was first presented in 2013

and was named to recognise the pioneering efforts of Peter Robertson who commenced wine making at Barwang in the early 1970s. The first ‘Hilltops Wine of the Year’ Award was presented to Freemans Vineyards in 2007. They were also successful in 2012 and 2014. Grove Estate won this award last year and were also successful in 2009. Previous winners also include Chalker’s Crossing (2008), Edan Road (2010), McWilliams (2011) and Moppity (2013). Since 2007 various methods have been used to determine the ‘Hilltops Wine of the Year’, including judging by Lester Jesberg, editior of WineWise Magazine, but 2016 marks the first opportunity for all Hilltops Wines to be judged in the one wine show.

BOOROWA News...

Have you been enjoying the warm winter weather of late?

It’s been great. I really hate winter. I’m a real cold frog, so I’ve been enjoying the warmth - Rebecca Bruce.

IMAGE: Boorowa Tourism and Economic Development officers Janene Hurley and Mel Ford stand with the Boorowa Irish Woolfest sign. The Woolfest will take place on October 1st and 2nd.

Irish Woolfest Well on Track The program is officially set for what is promising to be a great Irish Woolfest in Boorowa this year, with all acts and events now locked in and ready to go. This year’s Boorowa Irish Woolfest, Boorowa’s biggest annual event, will be taking place on the October long weekend, which is October 1-2, and the event is shaping up as one of the best yet. Sunday will be the main day of the event, with the highlight being the running of the sheep and the street parade, which will take place at 12pm on the day. A host of other activities will be held between 9am and 4pm, and, in line with the Irish theme of the event, Melbourne-based Celtic band ‘Zeon’ will be playing. The headline act will be joined by some other musicians as well, and also on the Sunday will be a whip cracking display, by

the Wicks and Pittman families, both of which are national champions. Starting on the Saturday, the NSW Trial Yard Dog Championships will be held for the first time in Boorowa, as well as the South West Slopes Championships. This event is expected to be a major drawcard. These events will run across Saturday and Sunday. Saturday will also see the popular ‘quick shear’ sheep shearing competition, as well as a rodeo, a gold trail reenactment, and the Long Lazy Dinner. Woolfest organiser Mel Ford said the event took 12 months to plan. “I would like to thank all of our sponsors as well. The event would not be possible without that support,” she said. Water Supply Network Improvements to Commence in Harden

IMAGE: Recommendation will be given to Council on the proposed Harden Piggery.

Independent Hearing and Assessment Panel Formed for Proposed Harden Piggery

At a recent meeting of the Hilltops Council, the decision was made to establish an Independent Hearing and Assessment Panel (IHAP) to assist in the assessment of the application for a large piggery development near the Harden township. The Panel has recently been established and met on Monday August 15 to assess available information and undertake an inspection of the proposal site. Hilltops Council General Manager Anthony McMahon said recommendations would be provided back to Council from the IHAP, and Council would then take action with recommendations brought into consideration. “The IHAP will undertake a thorough analysis of available information, inspect the proposal site and provide recommendations back to Council to facilitate a determination on the application,” Mr McMahon said.

For transparency and probity, the recommendations of the panel will be made public. The panel consists of experts in the fields of soil, groundwater, odour, traffic and biodiversity and has been established to provide independent, professional advice to Council about these important aspects of the application. Mr McMahon said the IHAP’s recommendations would be delivered to Council within the next month, and Council would then be tasked with delivering a report to Council Administrator Wendy Tuckerman. This report would be used for final decision making on the piggery matter, based on the findings of the IHAP. “Following the initial meeting and site inspection, the panel has been given a month to provide their recommendations back to Council which will then allow staff to progress a report for consideration by the Administrator,” said Mr McMahon.

Hilltops Council will be commencing water main upgrade works in Harden Murrumburrah in early September 2016, to replace sections of the ageing water main. Some residents in the Harden-Murrumburrah area had reportedly complained about issues with the colour and quality of their home water supply, and Council will now be taking action to rectify the issue. The cast iron pipes will be replaced by UPVC pipes which have been ordered in preparation for the works. Hilltops Council General Manager Anthony McMahon said the ageing state of the cast iron water mains in Harden had been found to be the cause of water issues in the town, and that Council would act swiftly to resolve the problem. “Council is aware of several areas where discoloration of water has occurred which is a consequence of ageing cast iron water mains” said Council’s General Manager Anthony McMahon. Mr McMahon added water quality in the area was of upmost importance. “Council is aware of the importance of maintaining a reliable, quality water supply and the main replacements works to be undertaken will improve the reliability of water quality.” The streets targeted for the first stage of the works will be Stair Street, between Clarke Street and Allsop Street; Allsop Street, between Clarke and North Streets; and North Street, between Allsop and Ward Streets. Residents in the affected water mains work zones will be advised of supply interruptions by letter drop and future media releases. In the interim, Council requests that consumers who may encounter dirty water notify Council immediately to allow prompt rectification action to be taken.

IMAGE: Key points were discussed about the importance of speaking out against domestic violence.

Hennessy Initiates Trial NRL “Action Against Domestic Violence” Program in Schools In 2015 the NRL presented their regular Canberra Raiders program on promoting Rugby League to schools, and after this presentation Hennessy’s Assistant Principal of Community Gerard Simms approached them to consider if they had a domestic violence program that they could present to schools as rugby league has a significant presence in regional community schools. Through continued consultation between Hennessy and regional Rugby League Game development officer for South West NSW Luke Branighan it was arranged for Alan Tongue (ex-Canberra Raiders and NSW Country origin player) to come to Hennessy in August 2016 to trial the National Rugby League program to look at ways to identify and respond to domestic violence in our communities. More than 50 students from Hennessy Catholic College travelled to the Australian Institute of Sports recently to participate in the Archdiocesan Athletics carnival. The College had students in all age groups and in both track and field events participating on the day. It is a tremendous effort so many students achieved results at the school athletics carnival to have made it to the Archdiocesan level. Fifteen students will now progress to the next level, to be held at Homebush, the venue of the 2000 Olympics. The students who travel to Homebush to participate in the Combined Catholic College’s (CCC) carnival are following a pathway which could lead to elite sport representation. The College provides many opportunities for students to achieve their best both in the classroom and on the sporting fields. Inspiring futures of hope…

Time to Spray Trees and Prepare Summer Vegetables While the weather this week has returned to winter temperatures after a couple of weeks of spring-like weather, Spring is still just around the corner, and Golden Glance Nursery business partner Martin Sullivan says it is time to shift your garden from winter to spring. While summer vegetables ideally should not be planted until mid-September, Mr Sullivan said it was still a good time of the year to start planning a summer vegetable garden. “As the seasons change, it’s important to start thinking about what you should be planting,” he said. “While we don’t recommend planting summer vegetables until around mid-September, it is not a bad idea to start getting your seeds and preparing to plant your summer vegetables.” “Some people do choose to plant them now, but with the chance that we’ll still see a few frosts between now and early September, it’s a risk planting them, as the frost can damage the plants.” Mr Sullivan said there were many different summer vegetables people could consider planting, including tomatoes (technically a tomato is a fruit), corn, melons, strawberries, egg plants, and summer herbs, including basil and thyme. This is only a very short list of all of the possibilities, and Mr Sullivan said Golden Glance Nursery had everything someone would need to set up a successful summer vegetable garden. In addition to summer vegetables, Mr Sullivan said now was a good time to start herbicide spraying around trees. Herbicides can be applied by a variety of means including boom sprayers, aerial spraying, misters, blanket wipers, rope wick applicators, weed seekers and backpack sprayers.

IMAGE: It is time to start thinking about planting summer vegetables, with spring just around the corner.

Herbicides, also known as weedkillers, are chemical substances used to control unwanted plants. Selective herbicides control specific weed species, while leaving the desired crop relatively unharmed, while non-selective herbicides (sometimes called “total weedkillers” in commercial products) can be used to clear waste ground, as they kill all plant material with which they come into contact. Mr Sullivan said now until the end of spring would be the busiest time for Golden Glance Nursery, and as a consequence, they were prepared with lots of stock, and plenty of advice to help you prepare your garden for the best garden season of the year. “Spring is the time of year where everything blooms as the warmer weather rolls in, and that’s where we come in to help people out with their gardens,” he said. Golden Glance Nursery is open seven days, and in between searching for the right trees, plants and soils for your garden, why not relax with a cake, cuppa, or even lunch or afternoon tea and watch the world go by at the café. Don’t worry, you won’t literally get ants in your pants, but just like the name of it, the café is the perfect addition to the garden setting that Golden Glance Nursery is. The café is open from Tuesday to Sunday from 10am to 3.30pm. By Joshua Matic

Celebrate Father’s Day IMAGE: Dad’s will be spoilt this Father’s Day, 4th September.

Father’s Day in Australia is celebrated on the first Sunday in September, which coincides with the first Sunday of Spring. Father’s Day is a celebration honouring fathers and celebrating fatherhood, paternal bonds, and the influence of fathers in society. In Catholic Europe, it has been celebrated on March 19 (St. Joseph’s Day) since the Middle Ages. This celebration was brought by the Spanish and Portuguese to Latin America, where March 19 is often still used for it, though many countries in Europe and the Americas have adopted the US date which is the third Sunday of June. Father’s Day was introduced into popular culture in the US around 1910, and while most of

Essential Energy is reminding customers to prepare their homes for the traditionally windy months of the year and minimise the risk of power outages caused by branches and debris being blown into power lines. Regional manager Northern, Mark Summers, said August through to November was renowned for gusty winds that could pick up vegetation or other objects and pitch them into power lines or cause wires to clash. “We urge householders to clear up their yards, remove loose debris and anchor items such as furniture, sheds and play equipment to minimise the risk of strong winds blowing them into power lines,” Mark said. “It pays to visually inspect trees near the power network and report any clearance concerns to Essential Energy – don’t attempt to prune vegetation near power lines.” Essential Energy recommends taking care when venturing outdoors in windy weather and remaining alert to potential electrical hazards. “Exercise caution when engaging in outdoor activities, such as kite flying, during wild winds and remember to keep well clear of overhead power lines,” Mark said. If you come across a fallen power line, stay at least eight metres away from the wires and anything in contact with them and call Essential Energy immediately on 13 20 80.

Felix Rams – It’s All About the Lambs Felix Rams has a singular focus on producing efficient and profitable prime lambs by breeding high performance, structurally sound meat sheep rams. They use birthweights, Lambplan breeding values for birthweight and lambing ease to help eliminate the production of rams that sire lambs with excessively high or low birthweights. At Felix Rams the priority is quick early growth, and maturity, not maximum adult ram size. Felix Rams will efficiently produce a 22-28 kg lamb. Early maturity also helps getting your suckers to hit the target year in year out. Over the last five years Felix Rams has been committed to DNA testing potential young sires

for yield and eating quality with over 300 animals tested. Felix Rams provides Lambplan breeding values for every ram sold, allowing lamb producers to buy on specification to suit their production system. This is particularly important for birthweight and fat cover, where one ram doesn’t suit everybody or every system. Felix Rams will offer around 140 Poll Dorset and 45 White Suffolk rams at their annual on-property sale at Greenethorpe on September 6th. Catalogues are available at www.felixrams.com.au from August 25, or call Rodney on 0417 499 204, or the selling agents, Allan Gray and Co Cowra, on 02 6342 2377.

Shorthorn Central Bull breeder Trent Johnstone says their first shorthorn bull sale on farm will have advantages for buyers. Shorthorn Central will be holding its first ever on-farm shorthorn bull sale on Thursday, September 8, at ‘Chindwarra’ 381 Thurungle Road, Forbes. Mr Johnstone said there would be advantages of staging the sale at the farm, and said this would benefit buyers more than having it at the livestock exchange. “I think we will have a better atmosphere by selling our bulls straight from the farm, and buyers will be able to view the bulls in their own comfort zone,” he said. Forty bulls from six different vendors will be auctioned at the sale, which starts at 1pm on the day. All Shorthorn Central bulls are grass fed,

and Mr Johnstone said this would be an advantage for some buyers. “Our bulls are very balanced, they have high carcass and maternal profitability and all bulls have been vaccinated with 7 in 1, Pesti ,Vibrio and are semen tested, ready to go to work.” This year has been a very exciting time to be involved in the shorthorn breed and their crosses. With the launch of the JBS Thousand Guineas branded beef product all breeders of shorthorns & crosses (75% minimum) are afforded a premium over all other breeds and now on parity with Angus. An invitation is extended to all attending the sale to partake in a Thousand Guineas Steak sandwich courtesy of one of the sales major sponsors, ANZ Bank. For all enquiries or to receive a catalogue please call Trent Johnstone 0438522198.

HILLTOPS REGION SPORT Cherrypickers Fall from This Week at the Group Nine to Albury Tipperary Golf Club It was a very promising season, however the Young Cherrypickers have fallen at one of the final hurdles, going down to the Albury Thunder 32-22 at Greenfield Park in Albury. The loss capped off a form slump that could not have been timed worse by the Cherrypickers. It was a less than ideal start to the season for them, losing their first three games on the trot, but they muscled up after round three, and showed the rest of the competition they were there to win the premiership. Their eight straight wins through the middle of the season lifted them well into the top four, however three losses out of their last four games, including their finals loss to Albury, brought them undone. Other results in the last round of the competition, including Albury’s upset win over Gundagai, meant the Cherrypickers also finished the season in fifth - denying them a crucial second chance in the finals. This ultimately came back to bite them, with the loss to Albury meaning they are eliminated from the rest of the 2016 season.

Tuesday’s winner of the 9 hole competition was Max Hall on 39/30 and 2nd place to Pat Hewen on 43/31. Max Hardman was the only gobble winner. Thursday’s play was an 18 hole stroke event with a small field participating, Bill Foreman won this event with 74/56 and runners up going to Max Hardman on 76/61. Max Hardman was the only birdie winner with 1. Sunday was the 8th round of the Corbett Tyre & Battery competition, which saw members play in the 18 hole stroke event. 1st place went to Scott Bennett, 2nd to Max Hall and 3rd to Lindsay Sheather and Bill Foreman. Scott & Max Hall had 1 birdie each and gobbles to Scott 2, Bill 1, Pat 1, Robert Norton 3 and Barry Hazelgrove 3. There was no birdie hole winner and Scott Bennett won the eagles nest. Bill Foreman took home the raffle prize. Sunday will be round 9 of Corbett competition. On a sadder note, the members of Tipperary would like to extend their deepest sympathies to Jan Foreman & Family on the passing of Doug Foreman. Doug enjoyed his golf days on the course and we will all miss him. Our thoughts go out to you all.
