IMAGE: The Boorowa Irish Woolfest has come a long way since its beginnings as ‘Wool Week’, with 150 sheep now taking to the main street of Boorowa in the running of the sheep.
Boorowa Irish Woolfest to Celebrate 20 Years This year, the Boorowa Irish Woolfest will be celebrating 20 years of action, and the 2016 festival will be one of the best yet. A huge October long weekend has been planned. Sunday October 2nd will be the main day of the event, with the highlight being the running of the sheep and the street parade, which will take place at 12pm. A host of other activities will be held between 9am and 4pm and in line with the Irish theme of the event, Melbourne-based Celtic band ‘Zeon’ will be playing throughout the day.
The headline act will be joined by some other musicians as well, and there will also be a whip cracking display by the Wicks and Pittman families, both of which are national champions. Starting on the Saturday, the NSW Trial Yard Dog Championships will be held for the first time in Boorowa, as well as the South West Slopes Championships. These events will run across Saturday and Sunday from 7.30am. Saturday will also see the popular ‘quick shear’ sheep shearing competition, as well
as a rodeo, a gold trail reenactment, and the Long Lazy Dinner. Woolfest organiser Mel Ford said the event took 12 months to plan. “I would like to thank all of our sponsors as well. The event would not be possible without that support,” she said. The first ever Boorowa Woolfest took place in 1997, with the event being an expansion of the previous Wool Week, which started a couple of years earlier. The former Wool Week event was similar to the current concept of Woolfest in that it celebrated the great sheep and wool of Boorowa, but ran for a whole week at the Showground and only featured displays. In 1997 it was decided to evolve the event to the more festival-like atmosphere it has today, and the famous running of the sheep through town was also introduced. In 2000 the event was officially renamed to ‘Boorowa Irish Woolfest’ to recognise the strong Irish heritage Boorowa has through the original European settlers - the Ryan and Corcoran families. While Woolfest nowadays runs for less days than what it did as Wool Week, many more events and activities now take place, and Mel Ford said this had grown the event from strength to strength. “It’s much more of a festival these days, and it’s a great economic development tool for the town and region,” she said. “We have 150 sheep in the running of the sheep down Marsden Street.” By Joshua Matic

Weather No Barrier for Show
The rain may have tumbled down during the entire Murrumburrah-Harden Springtime Show last Friday and Saturday, but this did not stop the Show from entertaining locals. While the horse events that were penciled in for the Friday were forced to be postponed until November, all other events went ahead, with some slight modifications being introduced due to the inclemental weather. Cattle events and pavilion exhibits went ahead on the Friday, with cattle competition being moved under cover to avoid the mud and slush of the outside grass. Saturday was the main day of the show, with the carnival rides operating, as well as more cattle judging, sheep judging, vintage vehicle and machinery displays, the grand parade and ‘U-Beaut-Ute’ competition and the announcement of the 2016 Showgirl winner.
Murrumburrah-Harden Show Secretary Judith Shea said despite the shocking weather, the event still went ahead to the delight of all. “Due to the weather, we decided it would be fair to only charge people a gold coin donation to get in,” she said. “The grand parade was a huge success. We had cattle, the 18 pound ANZAC Centennial Gun which was carried in a carriage by light horses, the Rural Fire Service and their cadets, the Showgirl candidates, and the ‘U-Beaut-Utes’.” 18-year old Jessie Abnet took out the Showgirl competition. She will now take over from former Showgirl Zoe Woods and go on to contest regional titles. Emily Banks and Taylah Phillis were runners up in the event. By Joshua Matic

IMAGE: Charles Louis Norman Carr, known as Norman Carr, pictured in the middle. The ashes of two of his eldest children and one of their wives are returning to Birbbaree to join him and his other two children. Photo: Supplied.
A Special Homecoming for Bribbaree The Bimbi Cemetary near Bribbaree will witness a very special homecoming on Saturday October 1st, when the ashes of three members of the Carr family return home. Family member Robyn Mara and her husband Max Mara have organised a small ceremony with their extended family to welcome home the ashes of Mrs Mara’s elder half siblings George Carr, his wife Joan Carr, and Allan Carr. The Carr family was one of the first families to make a pastoral settlement in Bribbaree. Mrs Mara’s great, great grandfather Daniel Carr, a convict, established the family’s farm near Bribbaree, ‘Frankfield’, which was eventually passed on to her father, Norman Carr, and the farm belonged to the family until the mid 1940s. Norman Carr served in the Middle East during World War I, being captured by the Turks
in 1918 before being repatriated and returning home later that year. He married twice and had two families with four children each. Mrs Mara was the youngest child of his second family. Each from the first family had an involvement in the Second World War, however post-war, George and Joan Carr relocated to North Queensland where George took up work for fruit wholesalers, while Allan Carr, who never married, became a bank manager and travelled across Australia through work. They each passed away a number of years ago, but they will now finally be brought home to join their father Norman Carr, sister Norma Reid and brother Donald Carr at the Bimbi Cemetary. “We’ll have extended family coming from across Australia, and it could be the final time the extended family is together,” Mrs Mara said.

Throughout this transition process, it will be vital for Council to provide staff with opportunities to bond and work together to secure success for the new organisation. The Rural Management Challenge 2016 is a professional development opportunity for younger staff within Council to expand their local government knowledge, management skills and team work ability. Hilltops Council has put together an exciting team to represent them that includes; former Young’s Creditor’s Clerk Brady Kenny; former Boorowa’s Project Engineer, Myrka Robichaud; former Harden’s Revenue Officer Kim Hill; and former Young’s Environmental Health Officer, Glen Harper. This team will be led and mentored by Council’s new Executive Director of Corporate & Community, Lee Furness. The challenge takes place over two days, the 11th and 12th of October, with the Hilltops team competing against other councils from rural NSW on tasks that will increase their knowledge of local government policies and procedures and teach skills that will address scenarios tailored specifically to issues faced by rural councils. Previous challenges have incorporated topics such as resource sharing, managing community expectations, writing reports, media releases and briefing notes and delivering presentations. The Challenge will also provide networking opportunities and ensure that our employees have access to peers that can continue to provide advice and assistance to them throughout their Council careers. These initiatives will help to grow our future leaders and will enable our staff to continue to develop professionally and personally to achieve not only Council’s goals, but their own. BOOROWANews... Expressions of Interest Sought for Regional Committee Membership
IMAGE: Denise Scholz-Wulfing preparing for the exhibition
Boorowa Takes on Vincent Van Gogh Boorowa is hosting an exhibition “Through Vincent’s Eyes”, which will showcase paintings and etchings inspired by Vincent Van Gogh with a bit of a twist, as the artworks will feature local people, places and scenes. The exhibition will be open to the public on Saturday and Sunday September 24th to 25th from 10am to 4pm, and the following week from Saturday October 1st to Monday October 3rd. Admission into the gallery is free and all paintings will be for sale. The artworks will be on display at Henwood House Boorowa, next door to IGA. The exhibition is made up of three artists who all have different connections to Boorowa, including Therese Crowe, a long time resident; Denise Scholz-Wulfing, who owns a property nearby but resides in Sydney; and Valeska Tilly, who lives in Canberra but spends her weekends in Boorowa.
“All three artists have been united with an admiration of Vincent Van Gogh and his paintings,” said Mrs Crowe. “It was Valeska who initially came up with the idea to portray Boorowa, as Van Gogh may have done, after she noticed similar scenes to Vincent’s paintings and the town of Boorowa.” St Patricks Church, Jubilee Bridge and the poplar trees are just some of the similarities that were found. Local artist Therese, usually known for her landscapes, has been working on portraits with local townsfolk. All artists have been working tirelessly and have been challenged by Vincent’s distinctive style. If you’re interested in meeting the artists come along on Saturday October 1 at 12pm to gain more of an insight into their passion and style. By Taneil Thornberry

QUESTION of the week What is your favourite tongue twister?
IMAGE: Cattle senior division reserve champion Jane Fitzgerald and runner up Taylor Gaudie. Photo: Joshua Matic.
Exhibitor and Cattle Success at Murrumburrah-Harden Show Many braved the rain and cold at this year’s Murrumburrah-Harden Show, and although the horse events were washed out, that didn’t stop the cattle events going ahead under cover. There were 53 children who competed in this year’s event with three schools coming out for the day, as well as single competitors. Gemma Lees from Gunning was awarded Junior Parade Champion and Sarah Edwards from Cootamundra won Reserve Champion. In the senior division Jane Fitzgerald won Reserve Champion and Taylor Gaudie got Runner Up. When asking Jane about her win she was “pretty excited”. “Every Wednesday we would work with the cattle, washing them and getting them ready for the show,” she said. Murrumburrah Agriculture Teacher Jan Young says, “It’s all about herdmanship and handling animals”.
“Considering the rain it’s a fantastic turnout.” The Pavilion was not only an escape from the rain but was lit up with colour with flowers, artworks, cakes and produce. There were many different categories that displays in the pavilion were entered in, including Aboriginal Art, General Art, Cookery, Fleece Wool, Jam and Jellies, Needle Work, Patchwork, Cut Flowers, Decorative, Vegetables, Home Brew, and Scrapbooking. In Needlework, the champion exhibit went to B. Weston, while Heather Johnson took out the champion exhibitor award in patchwork. Denise Sinclair won the Decorative category, Yvonne Konkoly won Vegetables, Dorothy Smith and Marie McCarthy both shared the Scrapbooking title, and the most successful artist was Pam Heys. Jenny Sant took top prize in Photography, John Sherriff won Jams and Jellies, and Winona Gray won the Aboriginal Art category. By Taneil Thornberry
My favourite tongue twister would have to be “she sells sea shells by the sea shore” - Jenny Somerset.
I don’t like any of them, and I’m definitely not good at them - Nicola Reinthal.
I don’t really know that many. “She sells sea shells by the sea shore” is the only one I can think of - Bronwyne Wood.

Stroke survivors across New South Wales now have access to support when they leave hospital with the launch of the Stroke Foundation Follow Up service. Stroke is one of Australia’s biggest killers and a leading cause of disability, with more than 50,000 new and recurrent strokes occurring nationwide every year. To help fast track patient recovery and reduce hospital re-admission rates, the Stroke Foundation has implemented the new Follow Up service to assist stroke survivors as they return home from hospital. The nib foundation funded Follow Up service is currently on offer at 17 sites across regional and metropolitan areas of the state. The program provides patients with a call from a health professional after hospital discharge and as well as with information, advice, support and referrals to assist them to better manage their health and stroke recovery. Stroke Foundation NSW Executive Officer, Teresa Howarth, said the service provides access to enhanced care and support to promote recovery for stroke survivors, their carers and family. “The Follow Up program fills an existing service gap for stroke survivors and those heavily involved in their recovery by providing much needed support and advice on their return to home, which for some is described as the most challenging phase of their life journey,” Ms Howarth said. Since its recent launch, more than 100 patients have been referred to the service with
plans to reach a total of 1,500 participants over the next 12 months. Lily*, a carer for her 70-year-old mother who suffered a stroke in May this year, was one of the first people to access the Follow Up service and said it has significantly helped her mother’s recovery. “The service provided me with information regarding depression and anxiety after stroke to help me support mum through her recovery. Having a dedicated StrokeConnect officer on hand to answer my questions and offer much needed advice gave me confidence and put my mind at ease that I was there for mum when she needed me most,” she said. nib foundation Chairman, Keith Lynch, said the Follow Up service is a crucial second phase of stroke survivor support that builds upon the success of the My Stroke Journey patient resource. “This support service complements the education resource by better equipping stroke survivors and their carers with the tools and knowledge to ensure they are able to manage ongoing issues and disabilities, as well as helping reduce their risk of having another stroke,” Mr Lynch said. All stroke survivors and carers over the age of 18 years are eligible for the service and the Stroke Foundation works with participating hospitals to confirm patient referrals as part of the hospital’s preparing for discharge process. I work at the Koorawatha Pub, as well as doing mixed farming work.
What do you enjoy the most about living near Koorawatha? I like it because it’s easy. It’s relaxed and there’s no traffic.
What do you enjoy most about the work you do? I love training the racehorses that I train in my work. There are no superstars at the moment, but a few are coming up the ranks. How do you like your coffee?
I always have a double shot, skinny latte. More coffee, less milk, and no sugar!
Where would your dream holiday be to? My dream holiday would probably be to a beach somewhere, perhaps in South East Asia. I would like to go to Vietnam or back to Bali.

WHAT’S Hot Native Botanical in Young are currently stocking some beautiful succulents, including ‘Bromeliad’ plants. The biggest advantage of having a Bromeliad is they are extremely easy to maintain. In fact, you probably wouldn’t kill one even if you tried! These hardy evergreen’s don’t flower, and thrive in direct sunlight or partly shady areas. Bromeliads are a striking addition to outdoor areas, and their versatility also makes them great for well-lit indoor areas. They tolerate dryness as well, so are the perfect type of plant to have in the hot and dry summer months. Their only weakness is frost.

Iandra Castle Open Day 25th September and 2nd October Iandra Castle was established by George Henry Greene from 1878-1911, and represents a rare example of complete feudal-like estate, modelled on the English Manor System. It has no equal in New South Wales or Australia. The nearby village of Greenthorpe was built by Greene for his tennants. Greene pioneered share farming in NSW in 1892, and soon after the turn of the century, the Iandra estate produced the largest yield of wheat for that time - 100,000 bags. On 25th September and 2nd October, Iandra Castle will once again open its big front doors to the public. Explore the many turrets and corridors of the castle and learn about the local history before enjoying a picnic lunch on the grounds - in the sunshine. A wonderful treat of a day out for all the family to enjoy.

Hilltops Council has received a development application from GrainCorp for upgrades to an existing grain handling and loading facility. The $8.1 million upgrade will improve the loading and rail transport of grain from the site. Local grain growers are in favour of the upgrades which will allow more grain to be put onto the rail network at Cunningar, near Harden. GrainCorp have indicated that the upgrades will decrease the shunting and coupling times at the site and increase the number of trucks that can be sent out in a single shipment. The full application can be viewed on the Hilltops Council website or at the Hilltops Council (Harden Office) until Monday 3 October 2016. Any person can make a written submission up until 5 o’clock on that day.
