Woolfest Grows with Running of the Sheep
The annual Boorowa Irish Woolfest has come a long way since its infancy as ‘Woolweek’ in the mid-1990s, and original event organiser Barbara Manion says the Running of the Sheep has made it “iconic”. This year’s Irish Woolfest is celebrating its 20th year of being in its current format as the Woolfest, and it is also celebrating the 20th year of the Running of the Sheep. Woolweek began in the mid-1990s as an event that spanned an entire week, but was limited to sheep and wool displays at the Boorowa Showground.
Mrs Manion lead the way to change the event in 1997 to be more accessible to the public by holding it across a single weekend, and adding more variety to it by including other entertainment. It was then that the now iconic Running of the Sheep was added to the event, and in 1997 it became known as ‘Woolfest’. In 2000 the name was changed to ‘Boorowa Irish Woolfest’ to recognise the strong Irish heritage Boorowa has, and the event has gone from strength to strength ever since.
However Mrs Manion said the introduction of the Running of the Sheep is what had made the event so well known not just in Boorowa and the wider region, but also through Australia. “The event is truly unique. No where else has a street parade through its main street with sheep running down it,” she said. “The Running of the Sheep has really put Boorowa on the map.” “When I was still organising the event I would talk on radio in Canberra, and the people of Canberra thought it was an amazing event- like the Running of the Bulls in Spain- whereas locals have always thought of it as a normal event.” “We get many people that come up from Canberra, but nowadays people from Sydney and elsewhere also make the trip.” Mrs Manion was the organiser of Woolfest for 16 years, having retired in 2013, but still attends the event each year and enjoys the atmosphere of Woolfest. She said the Running of the Sheep had gradually increased the popularity of the event each year, with as many as 15,000 having been estimated to attend it in a single year. With more activities and entertainment scheduled in for this year’s event, which runs from Friday 30th September to Sunday 2nd October, Mrs Manion said there was every chance that this year could be the best event yet. “Especially with the NSW Trial Yard Dog Championships and the rodeo, it should be big,” she said. Towards Zero: 28 New Highway Patrol Vehicles On NSW Roads Member for Goulburn, Pru Goward has welcomed $4.8 million in NSW Government funding to roll out 28 new highway patrol vehicles across the state to crack down on dangerous drivers and help reduce the road toll. The vehicles are funded through the Community Road Safety Fund where speed and red light cameras fines go. These funds go directly back into important road safety initiatives such as high visibility police enforcement. The new high visibility vehicles are being deployed to key crash hotspots on major routes and highways across the state. Of the 28 new vehicles, 14 have already been delivered and are on the road in Bathurst, Wagga Wagga, Tamworth, Armidale, Tweed, Dubbo, Byron Bay, Grafton, the Hunter, Nowra, Goulburn, Gundagai, Albury and Lismore. The remaining 14 vehicles will be delivered progressively by next year. The high visibility cars will be out on highways right across NSW where speeding is most likely to have devastating consequences. The new Highway Patrol fleet will include seven new 4WD vehicles which will be used further afield on regional roads, where standard highway patrol vehicles cannot go. Grants Available For Local Emergency Relief Projects Local organisations and councils are encouraged to apply for up to $300,000 to help them deliver an important emergency relief infrastructure project for their communities.
These grants are being made available under the NSW Government’s 2016/17 ClubGRANTS program for projects that help protect local communities during emergencies such as bushfires, storms and floods. Particular emphasis will be placed on projects that benefit disadvantaged and regional and remote communities in this program round. An applicant information pack is now available on the Liquor & Gaming NSW website www.liquorandgaming.justice.nsw.gov.au with applications closing on Friday 7th October 2016. Applications will be assessed by the independent ClubGRANTS fund committee and approved applicants will then be invited to lodge formal applications. Successful projects will be announced in early 2017. Calling For New Members For The NSW Carers Advisory Council Local members of the community who are carers are encouraged to apply for a position on the NSW Carers Advisory Council. The NSW Carers Advisory Council advances the interests of carers and provides advice to the NSW Government. The Council meets a minimum of three times a year in Sydney. Members may also contribute time to working groups and attend other events and consultations. Unpaid carers provide ongoing unpaid support to people who need it because of their disability, chronic illness, mental ill-health, dementia or frail age. It is estimated it would cost over $40 billion to replace the hours of care provided by unpaid carers in Australia. Aboriginal carers, ageing carers, carers of people with dementia, carers from a culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) background, lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender or intersex (LGBTI) carers and carers from rural and regional areas are particularly encouraged to apply. For information about the NSW Carers Advisory Council and how to apply, please visit
www.facs.nsw.gov.au/reforms/carers/nsw_ carers_advisory_council or contact the Council’s Secretariat on phone (02) 8753 9380 or email NSWCarersAdvisoryCouncilSecretariat@facs.nsw.gov.au. Applications close at 5pm on 7th October 2016. For more information about the NSW Carers Strategy, visit https://www.facs.nsw.gov. au/reforms/carers/nsw_carers_strategy

Boorowa Museum Reopens
The Boorowa Museum reopened its doors last Saturday after undergoing months of maintenance work. The Museum, located on Marsden Street next door to the Boorowa Hotel, had been closed since December last year due to severe water leakages which threatened the structure of the historical building. The former Boorowa Council committed to repairing and maintaining the building, undergoing cement and drainage works to protect the building from further damage. Repair and maintenance works finished last week, and the Museum opened back up to the public from 11am - 2pm on Saturday. As part of the works at the Museum, the Boorowa Community Bank also granted the Boorowa Museum a sum of money to cover three new display units it can now put to use.

Boorowa Museum committee member Marilyn Miller, who has been on the committee for 30 years and has been President, Treasurer and Secretary during that time, said it was great to see the museum reopen its doors again. “We will be organising a function in the near future to properly celebrate the reopening as well as the three modern display cases we now have,” she said. “We would like to open the museum more often, but as we only have a small committee of 12 people to keep the records and man the museum, we can only keep it open for three hours per week at the moment - Saturdays from 11am - 2pm”. “As well as holding a lot of historical items, we can also help people get in touch with their family’s ancestry for those from Boorowa.” By Joshua Matic

The Harden Motel christened the new conference room on Tuesday evening 6th September, with a group of 14 keen participants including HRDC (Harden Regional Development Corporation)members and special guests. The Harden Motel’s new facility is intimate, welcoming and very functional. It was perfect for 14 participants with superb, exquisitely presented, city style finger food. The group conducted a SWOT analysis of the Harden Region, facilitated by Wendy Bowman, who skilfully managed the high energy and enthusiasm in the room to deliver a first look at the mammoth tasks ahead, in securing an exciting and sustainable future for the Harden Region. The public will have opportunities to contribute to this discussion and planning through the Sector Delegate. Profiles and contact details of each Sector Delegate will be published in due course. In the mean time should you have a great idea please e-mail: hardenregionaldevcorp@gmail.com Thanks to all those who contributed to the analysis. The team work, talents and time given are very much appreciated by all.

State of the Art Skate Park Officially Opens
Harden’s brand new state of the art skate park was officially opened last Sunday, even though wet weather prevented some activities taking place. The skate park has been a whopping four years in the making, with some hurdles standing in the way of a faster finish, however with the project now complete, Skate Park Committee member Cathy Sanderson said it was fantastic to see it finished. A huge official opening had initially been planned throughout the day, with the Canberra Skateboarders Association and Canberra’s BMX Backbone having been scheduled to run some coaching clinics. However the rain meant the skate park was too wet to make this happen, but the Canberra Skateboarders Association still made the trip to Harden to give the kids some tips and advice on how to skate board.
locally first!
The wet weather failed to dampen the spirits of the opening overall, with CSA members still making the most of their time in Harden even though they could not do any coaching on their skateboards, and the official opening and sausage sizzle lunch was still held. Mrs Sanderson said it was marvellous to see the skate park finally open. “We knew it would take some time, but now we can all breathe a sigh of relief,” she said. “I’d like to thank Michelle Irving and Amanda Shea for all the work they have done, as well as skate park designers Precision Skate Parks, representatives from Council, and Sibelco and Bendigo Bank for all of their support.” Plans are now in place for CSA and BMX Backbone to return in the near future to hold their workshops.

Farewell to Hennessy Year 12 Students
Hennessy Take Out the Three Debating Awards
IMAGE: Hennessy Catholic College students practice their debating skills.
Last Friday, Hennessy Catholic College hosted the Junior Catholic Schools Debating Western Region finals. 18 schools attended the debating day coming from Orange, Bathurst, Forbes and Lithgow to participate. Some 70 students in years Seven, Eight and Nine took part in the debates with another 20 students involved in timekeeping and other associated duties. The day saw 27 debates take place with topics including: • We place too much emphasis on sport. • The media promotes a selfish society. • Foreign Aid is a luxury. Some of the team’s debates were impromptu. That is they only had an hour to prepare the debate and they had no help
from staff or the internet; only a dictionary and their team’s knowledge. Hennessy entered a team in each age group. All three teams went through the day undefeated. The three teams now move onto the state finals in Wollongong next term. Suzie Duff and Donna Tyrrell, debating coordinators at Hennessy, were thrilled with the day. Suzie Duff said “Even though it took an enormous amount of organisation, the day was a wonderful success.” Donna Tyrrell commented on the outstanding performances by so many students during the day. She was pleased to see the adjudicators acknowledging the sophisticated vocabulary used by all the debaters.

Hennessy Catholic College’s Year 12’s finish their formal lessons this week after 13 years of schooling. To celebrate their final day, the College will hold a Graduation Mass and Prize giving ceremony. The St Mary’s Church will be packed with parents, the graduating class and all students and staff in attendance. The Mass provides a wonderful opportunity to reflect and celebrate on the time the Year 12 students have had at Hennessy. Mr Chris Browne, Principal, and Mrs Jessica McInerney, Year Coordinator, said they were pleased with the manner in which students have conducted themselves in the last few weeks of term. Both Mr Browne and Mrs McInerney were thrilled with the number of Year 12 students committing themselves to the after school study program. It demonstrated a commitment to their studies and was a wonderful example to the younger students at the College. The Year 12’s decision to fundraise in their last week of school for Lambing Flat Enterprises was also viewed as a highlight by Mr Browne and Mrs McInerney. The College wishes all Year 12 students the best of luck as they use the school holiday time to prepare for their Higher School Certificate Exams which commence on Thursday, 13th October.

To Paint or Not to Paint – Is that your Question? There are few home-maintenance painting jobs around the home that are as important as the exterior painting The first line of defence against any sort of weather including the damaging rays of the hot Australian sun to the driving winds to the icy frosts of winter, are paint and caulking. Painting the outside of your home will give you the fortress you need to protect your home against the elements, and add a vibrancy to your street appeal and increase the value too! The first signs that you need to repaint your home is if you notice paint starting to crack, peel or blister. If you ignore these signs, you will likely find yourself with a much larger job down the track! Before you start the job, here are some tips that can help you achieve the best results. Select the correct paint There are two types of exterior paints that you can choose from: waterbased latex and oil-based alkyd. Latex cleans up with soap and water, dries quickly, has low odor, and remains flexible longer.

Alkyd paints require mineral spirits (paint thinner) for cleanup as opposed to just soap and water. The colour that you choose to paint your house is really a personal preference, however there are many stores in the Hilltops area including Thrifty Hardware in Boorowa and Mitre 10 in Young, who have experts on hand to help you with choosing the best paint for your needs and supply you with the tools for the job ahead. Do you need a brush or a roller or both? As a tip, grey shades have been hailed the colour of the decade by many home stylists. Prepare the surface Should you not prepare the surface, the exterior of your home we mentioned being your fortress from the elements, will not stack up against Australia’s harsh weather. If you do not prepare the surface correctly the paint will not stick, will look patchy or ripply, and its longevity will be greatly diminished. Pressure washing the house or using a scrubbing brush with soapy water are two very effective ways of removing the dust and dirt. Ensure there are no nails protruding from the surface of the area that you are going to paint and using an exterior putty, fill the gaps. Once set, sand the surface. Start in the Shade Painting in direct sunlight or applying paint to a sun-baked surface will make fresh paint evaporate. Begin on the shady side of the house, then wait for the sun to move and shade the other sides of the house. Painting on an overcast day would also work fine. Start at the Top Start painting near the top of the house and work your way down. Apply paint to the butt or bottom edge of the siding first, then paint the broad surfaces. To avoid lap marks, always try to brush from one wet surface onto another wet surface. When that’s not possible and you must paint onto a previously painted and dried surface, overlap onto the dried-paint surface by several inches.

OUR Gal
Kerri Matthews How long have you lived in Young for? I have lived in Young for 27 years. I was born in Broken Hill and moved when I was three years old. What do you like about living in Young? I like the size of Young. It’s not too big and not too small. The people are very friendly and the countryside is nice too. What do you do for work? I work in customer service at the St George Bank branch in Young, and I also coach horse riding after hours and on the weekend. What do you enjoy the most about your work? I enjoy coaching horse riding because I get to see people progress and achieve their goals. At St George I work with a great team, and the customers are lovely as well. What do you do in your spare time? I compete with my horses in eventing and show jumping. Where would your dream holiday be to? My dream holiday would be to anywhere with a beach.

YOUNG Tax Time
Tossing Can Be Taxing! You would never consider throwing cash out with your rubbish but most people do just that. Throwing receipts away or putting them in a ‘safe place’ (that you subsequently forget) could be costing you money. Just $100 in receipts could return you somewhere between $21 and $47 at tax time, depending on how much you earn. One way to ‘save’ these receipts is to download the Australian Tax Office’s app and go to myDeductions (at the bottom of the screen in the ‘favourites bar’). You can also use the app to record your workrelated travel. At the end of the tax year you have the option of emailing a summary of these expenses directly to your Accountant. Please remember that the expense you are recording must be directly related to earning your income or be a donation to a ‘deductible gift recipient’. The app also allows you to record an expense even if only a percentage is claimable. Another helpful hint from Young Taxation, “The tax people that work for you”
