GOOD NEWS GIGGLES… Troy Grant, Minister for Emergency Services, Ken Keith, Parkes Shire Mayor, Parkes Shire Councillor’s and Parkes Fire & Rescue staff celebrating the announcement of the new site for the Parkes Fire Station.

A State-Of-The-Art Station

With a crew of 18, Parkes firefighters have found the quarters at their 94-year-old fire station a little tight, especially when getting dressed for a call-out. Thankfully, after an extensive search to find a site for the new fire station, the NSW Government has been able to purchase the block that sits behind the current fire station, on Hill Street. The NSW Government’s 2017-18 Budget included a further $150,000 for the purchase of the land, following a $250,000 investment in the 201617 budget. Troy Grant, Minister for Emergency Services, visited Parkes last Wednesday to announce the purchase. “I’m extremely proud the NSW Government is investing in the safety of our region by providing our firefighters with the latest equipment and

resources,” Mr Grant said. “Our firefighters do an extraordinary job, often under enormous pressure and a new fire station will give firefighters in Parkes the facilities they need to continue their vital work for generations to come.” The design and initial ground works for the new FRNSW station are planned to commence later this year with the project expected to be completed in 2019. Parkes Captain, Craig Gibson, expressed his hope that the existing heritage building may be kept, and the space perhaps utilised for a meeting room, as well as a museum. “The new Parkes station will be stateof-the-art and designed to ensure our firefighters are fit and ready to do their job effectively,” Mr Grant said.

The 2018-19 edition of the Parkes Shire Destination Guide was officially launched last Wednesday at the CSIRO Parkes Radio Telescope. The new destination guide is set to become the cornerstone of the region’s destination marketing and creative for a destination appeal campaign promoting the Parkes region as a place to ‘be out there’, explore, and see first-hand what makes the Parkes region all add up as an appealing tourist destination. Parkes Shire Mayor, Cr Ken Keith OAM said, “our new Destination Guide showcases our unique events, experiences and iconic attractions that make Parkes all add up as an appealing tourist destination.” “Tourism provides a significant economic contribution of over $58 million to the local economy each year and we need to continue to implement these key marketing initiatives to ensure visitation and spend continues to grow for our local businesses.” Delegates at the recent 2018 Local Government NSW Tourism Conference got a sneak preview of the new cover and promotional video ahead of the official launch. For the first time, the Parkes Shire Destination Guide has been developed as a digital experience with a magazine flipbook and clickable video content taking viewers on a visual journey of our major attractions and experiences throughout the region. A record number of industry partners have joined the campaign promoting their establishments, attractions and events in the advertising directory which financially supports the production of the guide and promotion of the region to potential visitors. 30,000 copies of the full colour brochure will be strategically distributed throughout Australia to encourage awareness and visitation to the region. You can pick up a copy of the free Destination Guide at the Parkes and Peak Hill Visitor Information Centres and key visitor outlets and gateways including the Parkes Airport, The Dish and coffee shops, pubs and shopping outlets throughout the Shire.

Honouring The Brave

Lachlan Highway Patrol Sergeant Dearne Jeffree and Parkes, Forbes and Lachlan Shire Councils’ Road Safety and Injury Prevention Officer, Melanie Suitor, discussing road safety for this Easter weekend.

5 Days Of Double Demerits For Easter

For those of you on the road this long weekend, whether going on a trip or even just driving around town, be aware. Double demerit points will be in force again over the Easter holiday period to improve safety on roads across the state. Parkes, Forbes and Lachlan Shire Councils’ Road Safety and Injury Prevention Officer, Melanie Suitor, said that the double demerit point period would commence on Thursday 29 March and conclude on Monday 2 April (inclusive). “Double demerit points will apply to all speeding, seatbelt, mobile phone and motorcycle helmet offences this Easter holiday period. NSW Police will also be targeting dangerous driving behaviours such as drink driving and driver fatigue.” Since their inception in 1997 there have been significant reductions in fatal crashes over the holiday periods; including Christmas/New Year, Easter and long weekends. Mobile phone offences were added to the list of double demerit point penalties in December 2015, with the aim of deterring this dangerous and distracting behaviour. “Driving over the speed limit to save a couple of minutes, pushing on driving when you are tired, using your mobile phone whilst behind the wheel and driving after a few drinks isn’t worth the risk of not arriving

at all.” “I ask all drivers to remain vigilant over the Easter holiday period. We all have a part to play in reducing the amount of crashes and risks. Remember to slow down, schedule plenty of breaks during your trip, limit distractions in the car, don’t drink and drive and ensure all your passengers are wearing their seatbelts,” Ms Suitor said. Lachlan Highway Patrol Sergeant Dearne Jeffree is encouraging all road users to pay attention to road conditions and allow plenty of travel time. “People may think that it is never going to happen to them – but unfortunately none of us are immune. Disturbingly almost three times as many people died on NSW roads over the Christmas/New Year break. We have seen some poor decisions made by a handful of drivers across the state. “Drivers should be warned that they are at greatest risk of losing their licence during this five-day period. There will be more Police on the roads and therefore more chance of getting caught,” Sergeant Jeffree said. For further information please contact Parkes, Forbes and Lachlan Shire Councils’ Road Safety and Injury Prevention Officer, Melanie Suitor, on (02) 6861 2364.

Whilst announcing the purchase of the land for the new Fire Station in Parkes last Wednesday, Minister for Emergency Services, Troy Grant, also announced a one off $10,000 grant to Parkes Shire Council to erect a public memorial to acknowledge the courageous efforts of the Parkes Brigade while fighting the major fire at the Mobil Depot in East Street in 1983. “I know the event of 1983 is still very raw for many in the Parkes community and it’s important the bravery of those involved is recognised,” Mr Grant said. “As Minister for Emergency Services I’m proud to provide funding to support a public memorial to recognise the truly exemplary contribution of emergency services personnel in this region.” “I look forward to the memorial being completed to ensure this important event in our history is acknowledged for generations to come,” said Mr Grant. Parkes Shire Council, Fire and Rescue NSW and the Museum of Fire Inc. in Penrith, who have also offered to assist curate the memorial, are all working together to finalise arrangements for the commemoration of the event in May.

From L-R: Parkes Shire Mayor, Ken Keith OAM, Member for Dubbo, Troy Grant, Member for Orange, Philip Donato, and Parkes Shire Council General Manager, Kent Boyd unveiling the plaque for the opening of the Sewer Treatment Plant.

Future-Proofing Our Water

Unlike many other towns, Parkes does not have a natural water supply, and has been ‘making do’ with the original infrastructure for sewage and water since the 1930s, and 1950s respectively. Last Wednesday, Member for Dubbo, Troy Grant, joined Mayor of Parkes Shire Council, Ken Keith OAM, to officially open the new water infrastructure renewal projects as part of a $100 million program of works in the state’s Central West. Mr Grant said the NSW Government contributed to the infrastructure projects to provide the regional community with safe and secure drinking water. “Water security is vital to the life of regional towns and cities. These projects renew the town’s entire urban water cycle, encompassing raw water supply, water treatment, as well as wastewater treatment.” “These upgrades represent the largest capital works program that Parkes Shire Council has ever undertaken,” Mr Grant said. The NSW Government has worked closely with Council to help upgrade the Parkes Sewage and Water Treatment Plants, the Lachlan River Pump Station

and Bore 8 refurbishment. The new Water Treatment Plant uses state-of-the-art processes to treat the potable water supply. The Lachlan River Intake upgrades strengthen Parkes raw water supply and water security for Parkes. The new Sewage Treatment Plant produces high quality effluent that increases treatment capacity and minimises impacts on the local environment. “These upgrades provide immediate amenity improvements for residents while future-proofing their water supply,” said Mr Grant. Parkes Shire Council’s Mayor Ken Keith OAM thanked the NSW Government for its contributions to the water infrastructure projects. “Council are incredibly proud of these new facilities, and of the flow-on benefits to the community.” The Council held a Community Open Day last Saturday to celebrate the completion of the new treatment plants, which attracted a steady turnout of locals keen to learn more about their water and wastewater services.

Nobel Ambitions? A chance encounter between Nobel Laureate, Professor Barry Marshall, and nineyear-old Mary McCusker, budding scientist, has led to a new work of creative nonfiction designed to inspire young scientists to win their own Nobel Prize. The adventure book, How to win a Nobel Prize, follows Professor Marshall and Mary as they travel through time to learn the secrets behind some of the most fascinating and important scientific discoveries. They talk space and time with Albert Einstein, radiation with Marie Curie and suggests experiments young scientists can do at home. Mary said it was amazing to be a char-

acter in a book and hopes to inspire other kids to get into science. “I think the book might help other kids to do their own experiments and get them to learn about other Nobel Prize winners, and how you can win one yourself,” Mary said. “It’s important to find out new ways of doing things that will improve the world. It’s not so much about winning a Nobel Prize as it is about helping people.” The book, written by Professor Barry Marshall with Lorna Hendry, and illustrations by Bernard Caleo, will be available for purchase from Thursday 5 April from selected stockists.

OUR Gal Fran Dixon How long have you lived in Parkes and what do you like most about living here? I have lived in Parkes for 47 years after Graham & I married in 1971 – Parkes is a good friendly country town for bringing up your family & it also has good schools and sporting facilities. Where do you work or what do you do currently and what do you enjoy about it? I retired from hairdressing six years ago after working for 45 years – now I like to travel with Graham in our caravan and spend time with our six wonderful grandchildren. I am also a member of Parkes Quota where we help children with hearing disabilities, disadvantaged women and many more overseas and community activities. What do you do in your spare time and on weekends? Don’t seem to get a lot of spare time but when I do I like to do craft & sewing of any kind, but my favourite is patchwork. I also like to get in the kitchen and cook all sorts of different foods. Weekends in the winter I still play hockey, summer time walking, and I like to get in the garden. What are you really good at? My husband would say “telling him what to do”!! - but I would say my sewing and cooking. Helping and making people happy. If you could have a superpower what would it be? To slow down the clock so I could fit more into a day, week, month and year. What is your pet hate? Rude, arrogant and selfish people. Crumbs in my honey, margarine & vegemite.

Robyn Teet, Operations Geotechnical Engineer and Rob Cunningham, Manager – Mining Operations, displaying their awards with pride.

7 PHS Swimmers Off To State

Parkes High School students performed with pride and passion at the Western Region swim titles in Dubbo on 15th March. The swim team, consisting of Olivia Dolbel, Nicayden Greenwood, Jordan and Liam Moody, William Lamond, Geordie Duncan, Gabriel Goodrich, Brookelyn Pinkstone and Archie Rix, performed strongly against the cream of Western NSW swimmers. Gabriel, Liam and Olivia swam strongly to claim second place in their 100m breaststroke finals while Nicayden recorded a personal best (pb) in his events to claim a third place in his 100m breaststroke and backstroke finals. Jordan swam several pbs, while William anchored the 200m freestyle team with a gutsy effort to claim third

place. Geordie achieved second places in the 100m butterfly, freestyle and 50m free. The team enjoyed a great day of swimming, considering the quality of opposition, who converged from all corners of Western NSW. “I am really excited for the team heading off to state. We have improved heaps from last year,” said Nicayden Greenwood. Olivia Dolbel spoke for the team when she was asked about swimming. “I just love it because it is great for fitness and best of all we get to socialise with our mates.” As a result of their efforts, Liam and Jordan, Geordie, Gabriel, Olivia, Nicayden and William have been invited to contest the State Titles at Homebush Aquatic Centre in April.

Tee Time Ladies, have you ever wanted to play a bit of golf, but don’t feel like joining a ‘serious’ club, or taking part in competitions? Why don’t you try the Parkes Ladies Social Golfers? The Parkes Ladies Social Golfers meet every Tuesday and Friday morning for a round of 9 holes before heading for a coffee, often at Cedar’s Café in the Greenparkes Garden Centre. “Everyone is welcome, just come along and have a hit,” said Lois Godden. “Bring a friend, have a cuppa afterwards, we’re a friendly and fun-loving group of ladies.” Originally there were two separate groups, the Cygnets, who met on Tuesdays, and the Pitch and Putters who met on Fridays. Several years ago, they combined into one group. There are currently 22 members, with anywhere between 3 and 15 turning up on any given day.

“It’s not expected that you come every time, its very casual,” said Dawn Wakefield. “Our tee-off time varies according to daylight saving.” If you’re interested in joining, tee-off starts at 8am next week. For any enquires please contact Helen Westcott on 0412 444 452.

Netball is ranked as the leading women’s participation team sport in Australia for 15 to 24 year olds. It is a great sport to develop health and fitness in a team based environment regardless of the level of competition. Like any sport there is an inherent risk of injury. National insurance data indicates that as high as 25% of all major injuries are attributed to Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) injuries. Furthermore ACL injury comes at high physical, emotional and financial cost to the athlete. The ACL is the main stabilising ligament in the knee. Females are 4 to 6 times more likely than males to rupture this ligament. There is also further risk associated with athletes participating in sports involving deceleration, pivoting and twisting. This means that netballers have a high risk of injury to the ACL and lower limbs. Research tells us that 50 to 70% of all ACL injuries can be prevented with neuromuscular training programmes. These types of programmes are basically designed to improve the strength, flexibility, control, balance and co-ordination of the athlete. Not only can they decrease the incidence of lower limb injuries, they have the added benefit of enhancing performance. With this in mind Netball Australia, along with the Institute of Sport has developed the KNEE programme to provide education to coaches, players and parents. The KNEE programme is a netball specific neuromuscular training programme and can be accessed at www.http//knee.netball.com.au. Whether you are a coach to your child’s netball team, support staff, athlete or parent this programme is designed to keep players on the court for longer and moving more efficiently when there. “For the fitness of you” Linda Reilly
