ROCK ON… Dave Faulkner and Brad Shepherd of the Hoodoo Gurus had the crowd dancing and singing in the final set of the night at Band Together Farmers on Saturday.

Band Together For The Best Day In Parkes

The iconic line-up of Australian greats at the Band Together Farmers concert in Parkes on Saturday delivered a rare experience for the 2,500 strong crowd and left them in high spirits by the end of the night. The crowd in the mosh pit was really living in the moment by the time Mark Seymour and the Undertow followed by the Hoodoo Gurus came on stage with people dancing and singing with passion and conviction. The fundraising event for the Centre for Rural and Remote Mental Health was also meant to be a day off from all drought worries and concerns. With comments like

“the best day ever” and “fantastic event” it seemed to have hit the right spot. “It was just phenomenal and everyone had such a good time,” said Darren Jones, event director. The artists also loved Parkes and had a ball. “Although it was a hot and dusty day, it highlighted the reality of the drought, and all the comments have only been positive,” said Darren. A highlight for the artists was getting a private tour of The Dish on Saturday morning “which they all raved about”. Continued on page 2

MAYORAL NOTES Congratulations to the organisers of the Band Together Farmers concert that rocked Parkes over the weekend. Thousands flocked to the Showground on Saturday to enjoy the Hoodoo Gurus headline, in addition to a swag of other Australian music legends. All monies raised donated to the Centre for Rural and Remote Mental Health. Special mention to the RAAF Roulettes who wowed the crowd during their spectacular appearance over the fundraiser. Mark Seymour (right) with guitarist Cameron McKenzie during their popular set on Saturday night at the Parkes Showgrounds.

Continued from page 1 The other important result of the event was that so much awareness had been raised about mental health. “There were loads of people who spoke to the girls of the digital mental health service Reach Out in the marquee at the concert. Even during the build-up the mental health message was getting a lot of attention,” said Darren. The stellar cast of seven bands performing from 1:30pm on Saturday saw fans travelling from as far as Queensland, Newcastle, Sydney and all over the Central West. The addition of the RAAF Roulettes had the whole town excited as their spectacular aerial show could be seen all over. “Thanks for an amazing show, worth the trip from Shellharbour,” said one person. “What a great day,” said another. “We never get anything like that here, and for such

a worthy cause. Thank you so much to the organisers and bands for making it possible. Everywhere I looked, everyone was having a great time! It was the best day I’ve ever had in Parkes.” Councillor Neil Westcott opened the concert saying what a wonderful event it was for the farmers and the community, while elder Robert Clegg urged people to give farmers a friendly wave when they see them on their land, when he did the welcome to country. Parkes was also the centre of attention on Saturday and Sunday morning when ABC Radio did a live broadcast from Cooke Park with ABC Radio Sydney presenter, Simon Marnie. ABC New England North West’s Anna Moulder and ABC Illawarra’s Drive Presenter and music legend, Lindsay ‘The Doctor’ McDougall. By Maggi Barnard

Do you prefer your onions over or under the sausage?

Steve Chester: The traditional way is to put it on top, and that is the way it should be. If you drop any on the floor it is a waste of good onions!

State Government Funds For Six Projects In Parkes Shire

The opening of a Parents/Carers Room at the Red Cross premises in Church Street has been welcomed by the community. The official opening on Wednesday was attended by Red Cross members, donors and community members.

No More Nappy Changing In The Car The Parkes Red Cross branch has come to the rescue of parents and carers with a new and much needed initiative. The Red Cross officially opened its brand new parents/carers room at its Church Street premises on Wednesday offering a safe and welcoming environment for changing nappies, feeding or just some quiet from the business outside. The room is the idea of committee member Alison Dixon and the very first of its kind among Red Cross branches. “It is a fantastic idea and great for the community and families,” said Megan Norton, Senior Administration Officer of the greater western region who had come from Wagga for the opening. President Norma Oliver said the idea would not have become a reality without the help and donations of the community. They were able to convert a junk room into the beautiful facility with a basin with hot water, a fridge, couch, carpeted floor, toys, nappies and other items. There is also an

outside play area. Donations were received by Northparkes Mines ($2,000 for the plumbing), Terry Brothers (carpet), Philip Dixon (laying of carpet), Paul Woods (manual labour), Ian Rowe (electrical work) and several Red Cross members who made donations. “It is amazing to see this facility and that the money was used to benefit locals,” said Michelle Wetherell from Northparkes Mines. “As a mother of a three-year-old I know how much this will mean to parents.” Councillor Pat Smith said it’s been needed for a long time. “It is just amazing and great that the Red Cross has done this for our community.” The room will be open on Wednesdays and Thursdays from 10am to 3pm and on Fridays from 9am to 3pm. “We would love to have it open every day, but do not have enough volunteers at the moment for that,” said Secretary Allison Woods. By Maggi Barnard

Six clubs in the Parkes Shire will share in over $300,000 of funding announced by Member for Orange Phil Donato MP last week for a total of 20 projects. Phil announced $326,309 of State Government funds to deliver much needed improvements to local facilities from the NSW Government’s 2018 Community Building Partnership Program. This funding will allow local organisations to bring important projects to life. “This is fantastic for the Orange electorate; this funding will directly help our community by enabling positive social, recreational and economic outcomes,” Phil said. “I congratulate all organisations that were successful in their application and look forward to seeing these projects come to fruition. “These projects will make a real impact for community groups in our area, which creates benefits that flow to everyone. I am very proud to have put my support behind these projects.” The projects in Parkes are: Parkes Dragon Boat Club Inc for Delivering Dragon Boating to Parkes $6,500; Police Citizens Youth Clubs NSW Ltd for PCYC Parkes Foyer Renovation $28,050; Parkes Aero Club Training Group Inc for a new awning for Parkes Aero Club Clubhouse $20,000; Bogan Gate Community Memorial Hall Inc for partial roof refurbishment of Bogan Gate Community Memorial Hall $13,536; Bogan Gate Golf Club Co-operative Ltd for a kitchen refurbishment for Bogan Gate Golf Club $7,000; Parkes Golf Club Co-operative Ltd for heating and air conditioning replacement for clubhouse $15,285.

The King Of All Cob Loaves Parkes has a brand new and very unique world champion. Northparkes Mines employee Michael Thomas was crowned the World Cob Loaf Champion in Wellington last weekend at the Cob Loaf Festival - World Championships. Michael scored a massive 476 out of 500 for his salmon creation. The 24-year-old said he wanted to offer the judges something different and focused on the taste. Michael is a Wellington local, but moved to Parkes earlier this year after accepting the position of Northparkes Graduate Environmental Advisor.

Young

More Reasons To Visit Young It is the ideal day trip of 150km to get to Young, probably best known for its National Cherry Festival in December. The undulating countryside, fresh produce, fascinating pioneering history and unique local businesses are some other reasons to visit. James White ventured into the area in 1826 and settled at Burrangong Station. The site where Young now stands consisted of a well sheltered valley with good water. White built sheep yards and a shepherds’ hut. The area was reserved for lambing ewes, and was given the name of Lambing Flat and remained as such for 34 years until 1860 when White’s nephew Dennis Regan and Alexander ‘the Yankee’ found gold in the creek at the rear of the current Lambing Flat Folk Museum. Within 12 months there were some 20,000 miners. Cherry trees appear to have first been planted in Young in 1847 at the home orchard of Edward Taylor. In 1878, the first commercial cherry orchard was planted by Croatian migrant Nikola Jasprica (often known by anglicised form of his name Nicolas Jasprizza). Using some of the original stock from Taylor’s Kentish varieties, Jasprica conducted grafting experiments to produce a suitable variety. He arrived in Lambing Flat in search of gold but after six months started a garden and later an orchard. By 1893 he had 100 acres under cherries with 7,000 full-grown and 300 young trees and 60 acres under

& SPORTS INJURIES CENTRE

Keeping you fit for life

Swimmer’s Shoulder Part 1

With the weather warming up swimming is an ideal way to get a full body workout. Overuse injuries in the shoulder and neck are common though, due to the repetitive nature of swimming. The shoulder is a ball and socket joint with a ring of cartilage around the socket to make the joint more stable. Around this is a loose joint capsule that is reinforced with ligaments and muscles. Because the shoulder is a very mobile joint it relies on the action of these muscles and ligaments to maintain stability. These muscles are called the rotator cuff and consist of four muscles that work together to keep your shoulder centred in its socket. So, if swimming strengthens the shoulder muscles why do so many swimmers have shoulder problems? The simple answer is due to the repetitive nature of swimming. The more complex answer lies in the fact that many swimmers don’t have good stroke technique and those that do can still have problems because the swim stroke (in particular freestyle), mainly strengthens the shoulder internal rotators and adductors. This causes muscle imbalance, leaving the scapular stabilisers and external rotators relatively weak and joint laxity increases. The rotator cuff then must work harder to keep the shoulder centred in the socket. When the already relatively weakened external rotators fatigue, the ball of the shoulder joint moves forward and the tendon of the rotator cuff muscles is pinched between the bones as the hand is raised above shoulder height. Next column I will cover some practical ways to prevent this happening and what to do if you already have impingement problems. For the fitness of you. Linda Reilly

Convincing Victory Over Wellington

The Parkes U/14 cricket team Parkes scored a convincing 91 run victory over a keen Wellington team at a superbly prepared Spicer Oval on Sunday. The Parkes team included a good number of U/12 players who took the opportunity to extend their skills by playing with talented U/14 players. The scores were: Parkes 8/194 in 40 overs - Joseph Tanswell 75, Hunter Hawke 38, Jack Milne 23, Flynn Thompson 13 n.o, Maddy Spence 9, Isaiah Hill 2/29 off 8 overs, Nate Bradford 2/21 off 4 overs, Lachy George ½ off 6 overs. Parkes batted first to see a very positive opening partnership between Joseph Tanswell and Jack Milne. They put on 51 runs in 11 overs before Jack was dismissed for

23 with 4 boundaries. Hunter Hawke (38 runs off 44 balls with 4 very strong fours) then partnered with Joseph in a quick fire 63 run partnership for the second wicket. Joseph (75 runs from 89 balls with 7 well struck boundaries) should be very pleased with his highest score in his young career. After a middle order collapse, late order players Flynn Thompson (13 n.o) and Harry Kennedy (6) added quick runs at the end of the innings. In reply Wellington lost wickets at regular intervals. Maddy Spence and Geordie Duncan were impressive in the field, while Jackson Plummer also stood out. Joseph Tanswell completed an outstanding all-round match as he produced 8 accurate overs to capture 3 early order Wellington wickets. Maddy Spence (2/9) and Ryan Dunford (2/5) chimed in to take valuable wickets.
