HAPPINESS IS… Ali Standen from Northparkes Mines (sitting middle) with Cheryl Thompson (right with child), Mel Ingram and Kate Anderson (standing in doorway at back) with lots of happy children at the new room at the Parkes Toy Library. Membership is $25 per year.
New Toy Service Focuses On Power Of Play
There is a lot of joy at the Parkes Toy Library with the opening of its brand new room filled with fun toys to help kids develop fine and gross motor skills. The new room aptly named Go Active Kids! was made possible with a $3,000 grant from Northparkes Mines. “Toys are very expensive, especially toys for children with special needs,” said Kate Anderson, a co-ordinator at the library. “You never know whether these specialised toys are going to work with your child.” With the help of Angela Wilson of the Central West Autism & Special Needs Awareness Group and an occupational therapist at the Parkes Hospital, they were able to buy a wide range of toys including wobble chairs, scooterboards, speech cards, timers, exercise balls, stepping stones, tun-
nels and many more. Like the rest of the library, the toys can be borrowed by all children for a period of two weeks. “So far the kids love the new toys,” said Kate as four kids jump away in an impromptu sack race. The main idea is to get kids moving, to play outside and get them away from the screens,” said Kate. For Mel Ingram, who also helps out at the library, the toys are perfect for kids who are always on the go. Cheryl Thompson of the Parish Council said the new room would not have been possible without the grant from the mine. “We are excited to bring this service to the community.”

While times are trying with the drought and downturn in the agricultural and retail sectors, the Parkes economy has been given some reprieve thanks to government and private sector investment. Parkes is experiencing unprecedented investment by State, Federal and Local Government injecting millions of dollars into infrastructure projects such as Inland Rail, the proposed Parkes Special Activation Precinct, the Newell Highway Bypass, the Parkes Main Street Revitalisation, Cooke Park Multipurpose Centre, Parkes Library upgrade and Central West Family Daycare expansion. This investment wave has given the private sector confidence with Pacific National investing in a $35 million Parkes Terminal Development and the recent approval of a $23 million advanced food manufacturing
facility. In addition to investment in the Parkes National Logistics Hub, further projects over the next 12 months include a new solar farm, the $200 million expansion of Northparkes Mines and progression of Clean TeQ’s $2 billion Sunrise Mine project. Parkes Shire Council’s General Manager Kent Boyd PSM said a total of 165 development consents were issued by Council in the 2018-19 year at a value of $66 million, an increase of 176% based on the previous year. “It has been a long-term vision of the Parkes Shire community to develop Parkes as a national logistics hub and inland port. The Special Activation Precinct will provide a step change towards this vision,” Kent said.

SNIPPETS...
Congratulations to Valmai Westport on celebrating her 80th birthday this week!
National Police Remembrance Day: Central West Police District Commander, Superintendent Chris Taylor is inviting the community to join police in paying tribute on National Police Remembrance Day. A service will be held at 10am on Friday, 27th September at Holy Family Catholic Church in Parkes. National Police Remembrance Day, traditionally held on 29th September each year, holds a special significance to police throughout Australia and the Pacific region, and is one of the most important events on the NSW Police Force calendar. On this day members of the NSW Police Force and the community remember those officers who have given their lives in the course of their duties. Choose Tap Water: Parkes residents are urged to replace plastic bottled water with tap water during Keep Australia Beautiful Week in a bid to shift our obsession with bottled water. Every year Australians spend more than $736 million on bottled water, with almost 375 million bottles ending up in landfill and waterways, impacting the environment and marine life. At 2,000 times the cost of tap water, plastic bottled water is an expensive convenience, which
QUESTION of the week is also much pricier than basic expenses like milk and petrol. Facts about bottled: It takes more than three litres of water to produce one litre of bottled water; a plastic water bottle takes around 450 years to break down; Australia’s annual use of bottled water generates more than 60,000 tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions; In Australia alone, we manufacture almost three million tonnes of plastic every year. New Medicines On PBS: The Federal Government’s listing of four new medicines on the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme (PBS) will help patients to fight aggressive forms of cancer and inflammatory conditions. The $56 million investment will slash the costs of Avastin, Sprycel, Actemra and Somatuline Autogel – saving patients thousands of dollars. Without the subsidy, patients would be paying $31,200 for Avastin, $51,900 for Sprycel and $10,200 for Actemra. Under the PBS, the medicines drugs will be available for $40.30 per script, or $6.50 with a concession card. Forbes news in Parkes: Are you interested in what’s happening in Forbes? You can pick up a free copy of the Forbes Phoenix at the Parkes Newsagency every Friday.
What message will you be taking away from the Mock Crash demonstration today?
Jake Green: It is a good example of what actually happens. The message for me is to never get into a car with drunk people.
Ashlee Unger: It was pretty good to see what will happen in an accident. I will remember to not drink and drive and to always have another plan.

Pumas Reign Supreme In Finals
Last Saturday the grand finals of the 2019 Saturday morning netball competition were played in almost spring like conditions. In Division 1 the Tigers were up against the Pumas who came away with the win. The Go Division saw the Pumas and Wildcats battling it out. Pumas were the stronger team claiming the win.
Bailey Boland: It was amazing. It is really great to have all the services in our area. I will never drink and drive and make sure to always have a back-up plan.

Build A Plane And Fly It In Parkes
Mock Crash actors (L-R) Wally Campbell (Forbes High School), Krystal-Lee McMurray (Red Bend Catholic College), Emily Mc-Hugh Douglas (Red Bend Catholic College) and Zak Chatman (Parkes Christian School).
Always Have A Back-Up Plan
The 11th very real, and at times confronting mock crash demonstration held at the Parkes High School last week once again brought home a very important message to about 500 students from three shires. The mock crash demonstration, aimed at Year 10 students from the Forbes, Parkes and Lachlan shires, shows a realistic scenario involving a single vehicle accident and response by emergency services. It aims to improve the attitudes and behaviours of young drivers and passengers as particularly red P platers are over represented in crash statistics across the State. “Locally, a 27% reduction has been recorded in crashes involving young drivers since the program commenced 11 years ago,” said Parkes, Forbes and Lachlan
Shire Councils’ Road Safety and Injury Prevention Officer, Belinda Coe. “We work in partnership with NSW Police, SES, and Ambulance NSW to bring home this important message.” Central West Police District Crime Prevention Officer, Senior Constable Daniel Greef, said: “It’s vitally important to make these scenarios as realistic as possible to show young people what actually happen on roads. “We based this scenario off actual crashes involving young people in this area.” The demonstration starts with establishing scenes to introduce the four characters, tells the audience what led to the crash, and then there is a full emergency response.
The skies over Parkes are set to soar with an exciting and new event next month. AirVenture Australia will be held at Parkes Regional Airport from 20th to 22nd September attracting up to 3,000 attendees flying and driving in. All things aviation will be on display including a high energy airshow, joy flights, kids activities, food, drinks and entertainment, trade and exhibition displays, an aviation-based STEM and careers program and a BushCat Aircraft Build project. One of the most exciting program items is the AirVenture Australia STEM and Careers Exposition for students with the aim to encourage ongoing involvement in aviation. The program consists of two elements: a week-long Aviation Engineering Work Experience Program with the objective of assembling a BushCat recreational aircraft from a kit, and the Aviation Careers and STEM exposition. It will be a one-day education program on 20th September for up to 150 school aged students. The aim is to provide students with an insightful and hands on experience of the aviation Industry, plus the various career pathways available in Australia, including maintenance, design, fabrication and remotely piloted aircraft systems. Only limited positions are available – nomination forms need to be in before 25th August. Visit airventureaustralia.com.au.
