SHOW TIME! The fireworks was once again a highlight for many people. On Tuesday Rebeckah Auld (left) was sashed as the 2019 Parkes Showgirl taking over from Amelia Tanswell (middle). On the right is Melaney Smede, 2019 Miss Parkes Teenager.
Parkes Show Generates Light Relief
The Parkes Show fireworks lighting up the sky on Tuesday night was symbolic of how our community keeps on shining despite tough times brought about by the current drought. “I am very happy with the 139th show,” said President Peter Unger. “I was concerned about the influence the drought would have and that people would stay away, but the entries have been good with some areas filled up to capacity.” Peter said his greatest wish for the community was that people would just enjoy the company of friends at the show. “I would be satisfied if people had come to the show to get away from their daily routine and had a good time.” Parkes Show Vice-President Bridget Lee was very happy with this year’s five finalists in the Parkes Showgirl competition. “The judges said they had a really hard choice to make and they were very impressed with the contestants’ knowledge of the community.” As people streamed through the gates on the half day public holiday on Tuesday, Rebeckah Auld became the 2019 Parkes Showgirl. Rebeckah is studying online through Deacon University for a Bachelors of Communications. In her outgoing speech 2018 Parkes Showgirl, Amelia Tanswell said she loved being part of a rural community, and congratulated this year’s contestants for stepping up and having a go. The Miss Parkes Teenager winner is Parkes High School student Melaney Smede. By Maggi Barnard

Recognition for Peak Hill Residents
NAIDOC week was celebrated in Peak Hill this year with two special events to heal and honour the community. Parkes Neighbourhood Central hosted a Red Dust Healing workshop at the Healing and Learning Centre in Peak Hill. Up to 40 people attended including community members, elders and service providers. The workshop was presented by facilitator and founder Uncle Tom Powell. Red Dust Healing is a specific cultural healing program written from an Indigenous perspective. In keeping with this year’s NAIDOC theme: Voice. Treaty. Truth, a NAIDOC award presentation was held after the workshop to recognise the outstanding contributions that Indigenous Australians make to their community. A big congratulations to young Cooper Dart from Peak Hill Central School who was
nominated as Youth of the Year 2019, and to Shani Hando owner/manager of the new Boomerang Café who took home the award for Community Person of the Year 2019. By Amanda Corcoran

Market Day: The congregation of St. Georges have been praying for rain to assist our district. If it rains on our Market Day on Saturday, 7th of September still come as we have huge halls to keep you dry, but wouldn’t it be great to be dancing in the rain? The famous plant and cake stalls will be abundant, there will be a delicious Devonshire tea, games for the kids, white elephant stalls and BBQ with dessert. Tour the beautiful interiors of the heritage building and come and have a great day out. Recycled Water For Green Parks: Construction on the Recycled Water Rising Main is complete, with the 12km purple pipeline connecting selected public greenspaces around Parkes. The project also included the construction of a reservoir on Nash Street and pump stations at Nash Street, Renshaw McGirr Way and the Recycling Facility. Commissioning and testing started at Armstrong Park last week. Other parks and sporting fields will be switching to recycled water in the coming months. Parkes Shire Council’s Director Infrastructure, Andrew Francis said: “We are on track to turn on the purple taps as we move into summer, so our parks and ovals will be irrigated with recycled water during peak water demand. The scheme ensures our

QUESTION of the week sporting amenities are maintained through dry times, and will ease pressure on our drinking water supplies.” Irrigation will be scheduled at night, although testing may take place during business hours during commissioning. While recycled water is safe for irrigation, it is not suitable for human consumption and direct contact with sprinkler sprays should be avoided. Grants To Protect Local Environment: Local communities in the Central West and Riverina can share in $150,000 of funding in the Communities Environment Program. Each electorate can receive funding for up to 20 projects, with the minimum grant being $2,500 and the maximum grant set at $20,000. Expressions of interest (EOI) are now open and should be returned before 27th September. To be eligible you must be a community organisation, which is a legal entity and able to enter into a grant agreement with the Commonwealth. Community clubs, scouts and guides groups, sports clubs, not-for-profit organisations, schools, councils and other community and conservation groups can apply. An EOI form can be obtained by calling 6921 4600, online at https://www.michaelmccormack.com.au/s/ SCP-expression-of-interest-form-withfactsheet-and-FAQ.pdf or emailing michael. mccormack.mp@aph.gov.au.

Light Up Your Smile
You deserve to be the best version of yourself. That is why at Baker Dental we offer a range of safe and pioneering dentistry services to help you feel more confident and youthful. Our services include in-chair teeth whitening and take home custom whitening kits. In-chair teeth whitening is a non-invasive dental treatment that lifts stains from the pores of teeth and lightens the colour of natural tooth enamel, leading to the appearance of whiter, brighter teeth. In-chair teeth whitening is the quickest dental solution for whitening teeth and removing or reducing stains and discolouration. It typically involves the application of the whitening product directly onto the teeth and the use of UV light to activate and accelerate the whitening agent. With in-chair teeth whitening, results are typically achieved within a 60-minute dental appointment. At your in-chair whitening appointment you will be given custom trays and take home whitening gel to continue whitening maintenance at home. The second option is the take home whitening kit, which are a more affordable option for whitening. At your dental appointment an impression of your teeth will be taken and a custom tray will be made for you. You will also receive a whitening gel syringe kit with these custom trays. You’ll wear the trays for a certain period of time, usually for 45 mins depending on your circumstances. The take home kit enables you to control the process at home. It is ideal for patients who would like to whiten their teeth on their own time. Results are usually achieved within two weeks. Contact Baker Dental to see which option of teeth whitening is best suited to you.

Upgrades A Welcome Relief The completion of construction work to revitalise six Parkes Shire townships and boost their economies during the drought were celebrated last week. The $1 million investment by the Australian Government included upgrades to Cookamidgera’s central hall, the Carrington Hotel’s lower floor at Peak Hill, new toilet blocks for the Alectown Hall, improved irrigation for the Bogan Gate Memorial Park, a new amenities block at Trundle and modern, multipurpose sports courts at Tullamore.

Pascal Scoots Into World Ranking Not many girls are drawn to the adrenaline of the skate park, except for a trailblazing Parkes student who has just added a world ranking to her long list of achievements. Seventeen-year-old Pascal Berry not only represented Australia at the first ever female competition in the World Roller Games held in Barcelona, Spain in August, but she ended in ninth position in the world ranking for female scooter riders. Pascal, who is the number one female rider in NSW and the ACT, and number four in Australia, said she was so stoked to be part of this historic event. “It was awesome being part of getting the sport to a higher level.” Pascal competed against 17 other riders from five countries saying the competition was very tough. The new indoor skate park built specifically for the event, had three sections that competitors had to hit. “The judges also looked at consistency, technicality and originality,” said Pascal. “We
each had two 45 second runs.” Looking ahead Pascal is excited for the new season that kicks off in Australia next month with a new sponsor, Tilt. She needs to take part in three of the five competitions across the country in order to get a ranking. While her aim is to get better and bigger, she would also like to continue her encouragement of the sport among girls. “I would love to see more girls taking part in competitions. I enjoy teaching the younger kids new tricks.” Pascal said she just loved interacting with everyone at the skate park and helping them. She will also work on her favourite trick the rotar whip, which involves spinning the bars and deck at the same time in different directions. With her passion and drive, Pascal is not only heading for great things but sure to become a catalyst for the younger generation to follow in her scooter trails. By Maggi Barnard
