Viva Las Parkes!

Parkes is going to be all gold and glitter for the 25th anniversary of the Viva Las Vegas Elvis Festival from 11th to 15th January next year. “It’s going to be all gold, gold, gold for the community,” said Parkes Mayor Ken Keith on Monday at the media launch of the festival. Ken said he expected 25,000 people if not more in January with an expected $15 million boost to the local economy. “January is by far the biggest tourism month for Parkes and the festival swell the coffers of businesses,” he said. Among the invited guests on Monday were Bob and Anne Steel, who established the Parkes Elvis Festival in 1993. “Your idea has paid dividends and has evolved

significantly,” the Mayor said. Cathy Treasure, new Festival Director, said the festival was going to be all silver and gold: celebrating the silver anniversary and the golden theme of Viva Las Vegas. The five-day program includes more than 120 events with festival highlights like the Ultimate Elvis Tribute Artist Contest and the Goodsell Machinery Miss Priscilla Dinner, favourites like the Northparkes Mines Street Parade, the Elvis Gospel Service that attracted 8,000 people this year, the Renewal of Vows Ceremony and new events like Viva Splash Vegas at the Parkes pool and the launch of Outback Elvis, a book on the festival. I CHOOSE ELVIS… The new tribute artist, Hamish Newham in his Elvis outfit.

Hamish has all the moves: Hamish Newham watched a full length Elvis movie when he was only two years old. At four he is featured as the new star, the next tribute artist as part of the Elvis Festival’s promotion for the 2017 event. “He loves dressing up in his white Elvis suit, doing his Elvis moves and watching Elvis concerts,” says mum Katrina Dwyer, Brand Marketing Manager at the Parkes Shire Council. She is involved in the Elvis Festival for her work, and Hamish started watching Elvis movies with her. “I have never taught him anything as I did not grow up with Elvis, but he loves watching Elvis concerts. I don’t know where else he gets his moves from.” Last year Hamish was determined to

Local Artists Take 20: Arts OutWest ventured to Parkes last week to host a Winter Arts Networking Night at Bent. It was an intimate but animated talk, with a small group of local creative practitioners braving the winter chill to share their work. The presentations followed a 20 x 20 format; each presenter shared 20 images and discussed each image for 20 seconds. There was lively discussion about the upcoming Elvis Festival, Maralyn Nash’s local art projects, and Elly Tom shared her passion for the Parkes Shire Concert Band. The Winter Arts Networking Nights aim to bring creative people together to celebrate their practice. Tracey Callinan, the Regional Development Officer of Arts OutWest, facilitates the events. This year the program visited Lithgow, Orange, Blayney, Grenfell, Canowindra, Bathurst, and will finish off the season at Oberon, with the final session at 3pm on Sunday, 18th September. For more information visit http:// artsoutwest.org.au/

Local creatives at the Arts OutWest event are from the left Warwick Tom, Tracey Callinan, Sylvie Maloney, Maralyn Nash and Lisa Ramsay.

What is your favourite thing about Spring?

Hayley Wade: It’s not too hot, it’s not too cold, it’s the perfect weather. It is also nice with all the pretty flowers starting to come out.

Codie Wakefield: The days are getting longer and warmer, the nights are cool, not cold. And maybe now my flower garden will start to flower, it’s been getting plenty of water.

Courtney James: I love the canola (because I don’t get hay fever), I love driving and seeing the fields full of yellow with the sun coming out. It’s the perfect time of year.

The festival has a competition for all tastes from look-alike fans, rock and roll dancers and buskers to poets and photographers. If you just want to enjoy the sights and sounds, the Cooke Park main stage will have non-stop free entertainment, Clarinda Street will be closed and turned into Festival Boulevard with the buildings lit up at night, there will be cooling stations and Elvis Central will open for information and shopping. According to Cathy the biggest challenge of organising the festival is visitors’ services. “Phone calls have doubled from last year.” She said shuttle buses would run from Forbes and Orange for festivalgoers finding accommodation outside Parkes. PROUD MOMENT… John Sarkissian with his family, Lucin, Mihran, Anahid and Markarid outside Government House in Sydney.

Friday 16 September 2016 Page 5

A Day To Remember John Sarkissian received his Order of Australia Medal (OAM) at the Investiture Ceremony held at Government House in Sydney last week. “It was just wonderful, such a proud occasion,” said John. “I am so glad my family could see it too.” John’s wife, Anahid, and his three children Lucin, Mihran and Markarid attended one of the six ceremonies held over three days to present all the Queens Birthday Honours and Awards. More than 40 people received medals with John, who was the only recipient from Parkes. John, who is the Operatons Scientist at the Parkes Radio Telescope, received his OAM for service to astronomy. The ceremonies are held by the NSW Governor, His Excellency General The Honourable David Hurley in the beautiful setting of Government House overlooking the Sydney Harbour. John said he had the opportunity to chat to the Governor afterwards and he clearly remembered his visit to the Radio Telescope when he and his wife visited Parkes and Forbes last year. It was a proud occasion for John’s broader family as his cousin, Ara Vartoukian, was also a recipient for service to music as a piano technician, and through support for the arts.

Samantha Daly, Helen Magill and Chandra Clements with Justine Fisher of Northparkes Mines.

Ikonic Panellists Inspire Parkes Women

An audience of 65 gathered for the Women in Industry panel discussion at the Ikon on Monday night. It was the second such event organised by Northparkes Mines, which brought together three professional women who share a passion for inspiring

others to succeed. Parkes-own Helen Magill spoke about her role as a professional coach for Tennis Australia. In 2012, she became the first female to receive the Excellence in Coaching award.

Friday 16 September 2016 Page 7 Chandra Clements, the Managing Director of consultancy service One Legacy, joined Helen on the panel. In 2014 Chandra was awarded the Gold Stevie for Woman of the Year. Also on the panel was lawyer Samantha Daly, a part-time partner for law firm McCullough Robertson, and recipient of the NSW Women in Mining Award. The riveting discussion delved into topics such as the importance of mentoring in professional and personal relationships, risk taking and resilience, and maximising talent through workplace flexibility. Helen shared insights into how sport participation fosters resilience. She noted that the pressures of living in a small town were different to those in a city. In a small town both victories and failures become more public, and she sees that it is vital that kids learn it is okay to fail. Helen says it is more important to help people reach their full potential than to aim for perfection. Chandra discussed the importance of risk taking. She explained how fear underpins risk aversion, and that it is important to unpack that fear in order to discover what is really holding us back. Samantha, a mother of twins, explained how vital flexible work arrangements are to advancing workplace equality. She stressed that although it is seen as a chick’s issue, men need to be given the same opportunities because mothers aren’t the only workers juggling life.

Living and Lifestyle Rare Coins Found In Local Parkes Store

Rarely heard of and even more rare to find, Greenlight Collectables has two ‘pagodas’ or gold coins available for sale for $299 each. They are both 24 carat gold. The pagoda was a unit of currency, a coin made of gold minted by Indian dynasties as well as the British, the French and the Dutch. The pagoda was used for trading purposes and as a form of currency in the very early days of the Australian colony being established. When NSW was founded in 1788 it did not have it’s own currency and had to rely on the coins of other countries. Looking like a small gold button, they are a real collector’s item, and it now explains why locals used to carry a small pouch for their money. Also to be found in Greenlight Collectables is a wide range of collectable games, second hand items, other types of coins and of course comics. Now located in the main street, just next door to Millers, call in and have a look – you never know what you will find.

Parkes residents can make a splash by enrolling in this summer’s Learn to Swim programs. For the first time, Parkes Shire Council has taken over Learn to Swim programs at the Parkes Aquatic Centre. The 10-week term kicks off on 10th October, with programs for all ages and abilities. Private one-on-one sessions, adult lessons and programs tailored for children and adults with disabilities are available. All programs are taught by AUSTSWIM accredited instructors who have technical knowledge, enthusiasm and the ability to build rapport with their students. All instructors have been screened according to legislative requirements. Council’s Manager of Support Services, Sharon Ross said the Learn to Swim program instructors play an important role in educating the community on the importance of water safety and swimming skills. “The aim is to create a fun, friendly and safe environment for your child to learn to swim,” Sharon said. Enrolment forms are available at www. parkes.nsw.gov.au. Payment for lessons and season tickets can be made at the Poolside Café from Monday, 26th September, 10am - 4pm. The Parkes Aquatic Centre will open for the swimming season on Saturday, 1st October. Opening hours are 6am to 7pm on weekdays and 10am to 7pm on weekends.

Improved Access To Mugincoble Silo Upgrade work on the Eugowra Road at the Mugincoble Silo access has been completed in time for the upcoming harvest. The Parkes Shire Council did the improvement work at a cost of $277,000, of which $170,000 was provided by the NSW Government Fixing Country Roads program, $80,000 by the Australian Government’s Heavy Vehicle Safety and Productivity Program and the reminder was funded by Council. Parkes Shire Council’s Director Engineering Services, Ben Howard, said the upgrade would improve safety and efficiency to vehicles accessing the largest grain receival site in the Parkes area. “The former configuration resulted in a bottleneck in the network as it did not operate efficiently or safely,” Ben said. “This project has provided an improved access road for heavy vehicles accessing and departing the terminal.” The improved intersection includes dedicated turning and acceleration lanes, and has been designed to accommodate higher productivity vehicles including road trains if required. The turning lanes will significantly improve safety in peak receiving times by allowing heavy vehicles space to wait to turn into the facility on the road without impeding through traffic. Teaching Shifts To A Practical Gear For Primary Students Students from Parkes East Public School sat in the driver’s seat as part of an initiative to teach local kids about Council’s role within the community. More than 130 students from Kindergarten to Year 2 became familiar with some of Council’s heavy machinery, including an excavator, digger and the road roller recently. Parkes Shire Council’s Director Infrastructure, Andrew Francis said the outdoor lessons were a great way for the students to learn a bit about Council’s work, services and major projects. “It’s fantastic to see our local school students show an interest in what’s happening around our community. By taking the lesson out to the worksite, the students got to see first-hand what role Council plays in

the development of our town.” Council has been working directly across the road from Parkes East Public School for a week constructing an urban main pipeline section for the new Water Treatment Plant (WTP). Council workers stood down for 30 minutes to answer questions about Council’s major projects, before the students got behind the wheel of a stationary piece of machinery for some hands on learning. “The students learnt about safety on a work site, environmental awareness and the broad range of careers available at Council,” Andrew said. Council is constructing 800 metres worth of pipeline along Renshaw McGirr Way to transport raw dam water to the new WTP.

Come To The Fun Palace In The Holidays! There’s no need to leave town to start the September school holidays with a bang! Parkes Library is hosting Parkes Fun Palace on Saturday, 24th September. Fun Palace is an ongoing campaign for culture at the heart of every community, led by, for and with local people. It’s all about creating and making together a space where arts and sciences, fun and learning meet, working alongside and working together. There will be play, experiments, stories, games and art for the whole family and two hilarious shows by special guest entertainer, writer and comedian Andy Jones. New Parkes Branch Librarian Andrea Lovell is looking forward to her first Parkes Fun Palace. “Andy’s What’s the Joke Show is a mix of music, comedy and literacy with a focus on humour and joke telling,” Andrea said. “Rap, Rhyme & Rocking Poetry involves the creation, production and performance of a rap, rhyme, poem or riddle. These interactive shows will make the whole family laugh.” Library Officers Debbie Gould and Sandie Ward have spent weeks preparing the activities. “The hands on activities planned for the day include a community collage, feet drawing (drawing with your feet, not just tracing around them!), duck racing, giant noughts and crosses, and the opportunity to see firsthand how a catapult works,” Debbie said. Everyone is invited to join in between 9am and 3pm on 24th September at the library. The What’s the Joke Show is at 10am and the Rap, Rhyme and Rocking Poetry is at 12pm. All activities will be set up with instructions supplied, and entry is free. Contact 6861 2309 or library@parkes.nsw.gov. au for more information.

Locals Benefit From Sports Grants

Six local schools and sporting groups will benefit from more than $12,000 in funding from the second round of the 2016 Northparkes Sports Grants. CMOC – Northparkes Mine has partnered with the Parkes Sports Council to financially assist local groups to improve facilities and programs. Trundle Central School will receive the majority of funds in this round, with $6,500 allocated to build a new netball and tennis court. Other recipients include: Parkes Pony Club $770 for a guest instructor, Parkes Hockey Masters Women $1,257 for representative uniforms, Parkes Little Athletics $1,574 for scissor jump mats, Parkes Railway Bowling Club $1,050 for new scoreboards and Parkes PCYC $1,400 for new

matting and airfloor. Northparkes’ Community and External Relations Officer Elysha Loiterton said this was the fourth year of the successful partnership program. “We recognize how vital sport is to our local community – supporting the grants program is one way we can contribute to some of the teams and clubs which do such a great job in keeping Parkes healthy and happy,” Elysha said. Sports Grants Committee Chairman Alan Gersbach said that this round saw a good selection of projects submitted, and most received some funding from Northparkes. A total of $15,000 will be available in the next round of funding, with applications opening in January next year.

Grand Win For Spacecats!

The Parkes Spacecats scored a narrow one-point victory in extra time in the Group XI league tag grand final in Dubbo on Sunday. Playing on Dubbo CYMS’ homeground, it was a golden goal to Claire Barber that sealed the 13-12 win in the competition’s second year. Two tries by Sally Dwyer and Ella-J Harris and two conversions by Claire Barber saw Parkes lead 12-10 at half time. Parkes held tight through a second half stalemate, with CYMS kicking a penalty for the only two points of the half, levelling the score at 12-12 at full time. The desperation of two periods of extra time saw the game become very physical, but the Spacecats held tight to their structure and made a lot of forward metres. Claire Barber found herself in front of the posts and surefooted the ball over for the

one point field goal to win the match for Parkes. While admitting to being “terrified” in the lead up to the game, coach Michael Dumesny said that a quality final training session made him confident the girls would put on a good display. “They showed up in the right frame of mind on Sunday, so I knew they had it in them,” Michael said. “The difference was that we stood up to the task of the extra time pressure – we were on top of it.” Michael said Sally Dwyer was strong throughout the game, but on Sunday it was difficult to single out the best player from an outstanding team performance. “Now that we’ve got the win, we’ll be able to really celebrate at presentation on Saturday!” By Cindy Nutley

Parkes will welcome representatives from all across the state as they converge on the town this weekend to compete in the annual SCT Parkes Open Golf Tournament. The tournament will host 156 players from 40 clubs, with over a third of players off handicaps of eight or less - making it the strongest field in the event’s 42 year history. Parkes Golf Club Captain and Tournament Director, Paul Thomas said the strength and ability of the players has forced officials to change the A Grade field from its normal 10 handicap to the lower limit of eight. “The calibre of players attending this year’s event is outstanding. We are really looking forward to seeing some of the State’s and Western area’s premier golfers in action. “While country players have dominated the event over its 42 years, there will be some tough competition from the metropolitan clubs,” Paul said. Mudgee golfer Mark Hale will start as the favourite, slightly ahead of Duntryleague’s Robert Payne and another Mudgee aspirant, Andrew Best. Since 1981, the SCT Logistics Parkes Open entrants have competed for the Fred Funnell Memorial trophy, whilst the Keith Clarke Memorial trophy is presented to the leading scratch player in the veterans division. This year the Club will once again honour the late John “Gidgie” Leister with players from all grades competing for the John Leister Memorial Trophy for the best handicap score over the initial 18 holes.
