LEARN AND GROW… Di Gill, Co-Ordinator of the Rural Adversity Mental Health Program with Andrea Lovell, Librarian and Cr Neil Westcott at the Mental Health Month tree in the Parkes Shire Library.
Don’t Beat Around The Bush With Mental Health
There is a special tree in the Parkes Shire Library and everyone can help to make it flourish and blossom. The tree was “planted” on a library window by Di Gill, Co-Ordinator of the Rural Adversity Mental Health Program last week as the theme for Mental Health Month in October is Learn and Grow. “Everyone is encouraged to write on a post it note what they have learnt to help them grow, and add it to the tree as leaves or blossoms,” said Di. “There are also packets of seeds, donated by Greenparkes Nursery, for the taking for people to plant and watch them grow as gardening is very good for mental health.” According to Di nearly half of all Austral-
ians will experience some form of mental illness during their lifetime, and those that don’t will mostly likely know someone that does. “But there’s still a lot of stigma and confusion around the topic and that is where learning and growing comes in.” Cr Neil Westcott, attending his first function as a newly elected Councillor, said as a farmer mental health was a big part of his life. “I am a smiling participant in these activities very dear to my heart.” Cr Westcott launched the fifth edition of the Glove Box Guide for Mental Health at the event. The guide has personal stories of people living with a mental illness, as well as contact numbers of where people can find help.

MAYORAL NOTES I am pleased to welcome the announcement that the Parkes Shire will receive $1 million of funding from the NSW Government to fix local roads destroyed by floodwater. I would like to thank the Deputy Premier and Roads Minister for listening to our concerns and taking immediate action. Additionally, $1 million will be invested to investigate options to improve flood resistance of the Newell Highway at Tichborne, between Parkes and Forbes. As Council crews continue to inspect and repair the problem areas, motorists need to be extra careful when driving. I am elated to announce that the next stage of the Parkes Regional Airport Business Park expansion is set to go ahead, thanks to a $1.56 million investment from the Coalition’s National Stronger Regions Fund. Minister for Regional Development Fiona Nash was in Parkes to make the announcement, which will ensure this important piece of infrastructure continues to deliver economic and social benefits to the entire region. NAIDOC week will be celebrated this weekend with a colour run, sausage sizzle lunch, live performances and traditional dancing. Everyone is invited to share in the activities on Saturday, 15th October at Bushman’s Hill Indigenous Precinct from 11.30am – 5:00pm.
THUMBS UP To Mike Baird and Troy Grant for admitting their mistakes in relation to Greyhound Racing and reversing the ban. It takes a certain type of person to admit their mistakes and doing this shows the caliber of the two leaders.

Why do you think it is important to celebrate Mental Health Month?
Sheree Masling, Katie Cheney, Jen Morrison and Katrina Mudiman: We need to raise awareness and educate the community to reduce the stigma and normalise it. It also helps to get people talking and to promote available supports and services.
Di Gill: It raises awareness and by awareness we have support for others who need it.
Margaret Girot from Forbes had 27 of her 53 tomato varieties at the Parkes Upmarkets on Sunday. She has been growing mostly heirloom varieties of tomatoes for 30 years. Happy to be able to get out after her place was flooded, it was her first stall at the Upmarkets.

Are your teeth starting to appear a little on the yellow side? As we age, tooth discolouration naturally occurs, and if you’re a keen coffee or red wine drinker, or regularly smoke, these can further exacerbate the problem. At Richardson Dental Surgery, they have extensive experience in helping patients achieve a whiter and brighter smile. Natural-looking bright, white teeth can significantly improve your smile, boost your confidence and enhance your self-esteem. Whiter teeth can also help to make you look younger, since tooth discolouration and yellowing is a sign of aging. Whether you’re considering teeth whitening to improve your appearance every day of the year, or to enhance your smile for a special upcoming event such as a wedding, birthday or job interview, professional teeth whitening is a fantastic non-surgical, affordable, and a relatively quick option. Cheaper over-the-counter and DIY whitening options can be tempting for those on a budget, they can actually be really damaging to your teeth – producing the exact opposite result over time by further wearing down tooth enamel to reveal the dentin underneath. It can even be harmful to your health, having the potential to cause gum irritation and damage to the oesophagus or stomach. Even natural ingredients or products found in every kitchen (such as lemon juice or baking soda, which are commonly
mentioned on blogs as whitening agents) can be acidic and abrasive, and can cause significant damage to your teeth. One option available at the dental clinic is an at home teeth whitening system – a selfapplication home whitening method utilising a safe, mild gel worn in custom-made trays for a period of 10-14 days. You can whiten your teeth comfortably at home. It’s a straightforward, simple method of home teeth whitening, and the results are worthwhile. You are supplied with enough whitening gel for your initial application and a number of subsequent maintenance applications. Call the team at Richardson Dental Surgery on 6862 1261 to discuss your whitening options.
Do You Suffer Visual Stress?
Visual Stress or Meares-Irlen syndrome is a sensitivity to visual patterns, which causes visual perceptual problems that interfere with reading. Visual stress causes movement and blurring of print, rapid fatigue when reading, skipping words and headaches. Fortunately these symptoms can often be relieved with precisely coloured lenses. The precise colour is determined with the Intuitive Colorimeter. This machine enables them to independently change the hue, saturation and brightness of colour to come up with the exact colour needed. Contact Hansen Eyecare Plus on 6863 5577 to book your Intuitive Colorimeter assessment.

Countdown To Parkes & Districts Relay For Life Festival
Winners of the Pride March fashion parade. From the left are Chloe Beaumont, Joel Pickering and Jo Jo Devine (John Ridgeway).
Stepping Out With Pride Dubbo was a sea of colour as hundreds of people turned out to celebrate the Central West Pride March in Dubbo last Saturday. The parade was full of vibrant flags and extravagant costumes as participants played up to the event’s Carnivàle theme. A rainbow float led the march through Dubbo’s main streets to the delight of onlookers, with many shops and businesses showing enthusiastic support for the event. The parade ended with a community fun day at the park, where entertainment included a jumping castle, photo booths, sausage sizzle, face painting, and information stalls. The crowd was also treated to performances by Talbragar Wiradjuri Dancers, The Stepping Out Dance Factory, live mu-
sic, and of course a fashion parade. The region’s second Pride March demonstrated a resounding show of support for the diversity that exists within the Central West. A range of individuals and organisations took part in the parade; groups from Wellington Council, Australia Post, Uniting and Barnardos joined the celebrations. The march was led by headspace Dubbo and Connected Communities Project Rainbow Alliance as part of Mental Health Month to raise awareness around the mental health issues facing the LGBTQI community. Next year’s parade promises to build on this success, bringing plenty more colour and sparkle to the Central West.
Almost 300 participants from 27 teams have entered so far for the Parkes & Districts Relay For Life with less than two weeks to go. The 2016 Relay will be held at Northparkes Oval on Saturday 22nd and Sunday 23rd October. “More than 39 teams and 508 participants registered in 2014 and we hope to increase the number of teams for this year’s Relay to make it even bigger and better, however, we still have a long way to go to get there,” said Ricky Puata, Community Engagement Manager for Cancer Council NSW, Western Region. Relay For Life is an overnight, team fundraising event that brings local communities together in the fight against cancer and to honour cancer survivors and their carers. Relay For Life is like a festival, with games and activities, delicious food, and entertainment throughout the night. It is only held in Parkes every two years so now is the time to get involved or you will have to wait until 2018! The final team information night will be on Thursday, 20th October at 6.00pm at the Parkes Services Club. “The information night is a great way to learn more about Relay, register yourself or your team, and promote your fundraising activities! It is also a great opportunity to meet other relayers and hear about all the exciting things that are planned for the Relay,” said Ricky. To register in the Relay For Life go to www. relayforlife.org.au and search for ‘Parkes 2016’. Registration costs $20 and includes a Relay For Life t-shirt and free breakfast at the event on Sunday.
Roads Minister In Parkes To Assess Flood Damage NSW Roads Minister Duncan Gay visited Parkes last week to assess the damage caused to the surrounding road network as a result of the recent flood events. “While we won’t know the full extent or cost of the damage until the water recedes, Minster Gay was able to gage an understanding of the impact to our community,” said Parkes Mayor, Cr Ken Keith OAM. “Sections of the road’s subsurface and bitumen has suffered extensive damage as a result of the prolonged wet weather and flooding. Motorists need to be aware that there may be pot holes and defects that pose a major risk to road users,” the Mayor said. A Council crew was involved in an incident recently when a tree collapsed on the front of their vehicle. The workers managed to escape without any serious injury, but the ute suffered extensive damage. Soil saturation had caused the roots of the tree to become unstable. Motorists are urged to drive slower and with more caution during this extraordinary period of wet weather, and to report damage to roads.
At the Minister’s visit were Parkes Shire Council's General Manager, Kent Boyd; RMS Western Regional Manager, Phil Standen; National Party candidate Scott Barrett; NSW Roads Minister, Duncan Gay and Parkes Mayor, Cr Ken Keith.

Meet Your Local
Councillors
Cr Bill Jayet with the Parkes Shire Council General Manager Kent Boyd.
Cr Patricia Smith with the Parkes Shire Council General Manager Kent Boyd.
Cr Louise O’Leary with the Parkes Shire Council General Manager Kent Boyd.
CR BILL JAYET
CR PATRICIA SMITH
CR LOUISE O’LEARY
Cr Bill Jayet is serving his first term on Parkes Shire Council. Cr Jayet decided to stand for public office when he retired from a 36-year career with the Champion Post in July. His journalism background gave him a good insight into the Council. He says that its great strength is stability; everyone works together as a team. Cr Jayet is a proud supporter of the recreational, sporting and cultural aspects of the Shire. He has a decades-long involvement with the M&D Society, and is a regional judge for the CAT awards. He is passionate about the creation and advancement of a cultural centre for the town, so residents could enjoy the larger, touring productions that come to the region. Cr Jayet would also like to see the development of a community garden precinct for Parkes, which would give local residents the opportunity to grow their own produce.
Cr Patricia Smith has served on Council since 2008. The life-long Parkes resident is enjoying retirement, although her passion for community service brought her back to Council for a third term. Cr Smith is a strong supporter of community housing, and the Meals on Wheels service, which she says is a fantastic organisation that helps a lot of people. Her current focus is on the rejuvenation project for Memorial Hill. She is also keen to see Parkes have a heated pool, as this would be an invaluable resource for health and well-being, not only providing yearround access for fitness and swim training purposes, but also for gentle supported exercise and remedial therapies for recuperating patients. Cr Smith believes Parkes is a vibrant and friendly town, small enough to have its own charm, but with plenty of facilities and services. She is proud to serve in such a positive council environment.
Cr Louise O’Leary was first elected to Council in 2008 and is now serving her third term. Cr O’Leary was raised in Parkes and is a proud long-term Peak Hill resident, where she is a full-time community nurse. She is very sport oriented and has a strong focus on health and fitness. Cr O’Leary first stood for council because she wanted to help make a difference to the community. She considers herself to be a spokesperson for the whole of the Shire as well as the villages. Cr O’Leary has a particular passion for hockey, and is thrilled that Parkes will be hosting the NSW Women’s Masters Half State Championships next year, which will be a boon for tourism with more than 50 teams playing in the competition. She looks forward to working with the new council on a range of sporting, cultural and indigenous projects over the coming term.
$13million Life-line To Repair Road Network The Parkes Shire road network has been thrown a life-line with the NSW Government providing immediate relief to fix local roads destroyed by floodwater. Deputy Premier Troy Grant and Roads Minister Duncan Gay announced funding of $1 million to investigate options to improve flood resistance of the Newell Highway at Tichborne between Parkes and Forbes. “We thank the Deputy Premier and Roads Minister for listening to our concerns and taking immediate action to remedy this issue,” said Parkes Mayor, Cr Ken Keith. “The Newell Highway is the main inland freight corridor between Victoria and Queensland, and it’s taken a battering over
the last few months causing significant freight delays and economic losses.” The funding is part of a $13 million investment across the Central West to repair local and regional roads in 21 council areas. Minister Gay said: “The task ahead is going to be a big one with the base under many of the roads across the region completely saturated.” Jeff Stien, Chair of the Newell Highway Promotions Committee, said as a result of the Newell Highway being closed between West Wyalong and Forbes, the businesses and communities on the flood affected Newell Highway have seen a major economic impact with traffic being diverted
around the flood affected areas. The Western Region Manager of the Roads and Maritime Services, Phil Standen, said Roads and Maritime Services have been working closely with the local councils and the SES. “We have dedicated road teams working on getting the Newell Highway opened as soon as possible.” The Newell Highway is the third largest major traffic route within the state and as such is of major importance for the economy of the country. It has been flooded and or closed at Marsden north of West Wyalong nine times since 1950.

Proud sponsor of the Central West Car Club Show and Shine. Parkes Tyrepower & Mechanical Minister for Regional Development, Fiona Nash (middle) announced funding for the expansion of the Parkes Regional Airport last week. With her from the left are Barbara Newton, Parkes Deputy Mayor; Michael McCormack, Small Business Minister and Riverina MP; Ken Keith, Parkes Mayor and Councillor Alan Ward, Chairman of the Parkes Airport Committee.
Parkes Regional Airport Flies High
The expansion of the Parkes Regional Airport Business Park will become a reality thanks to a $1.56 million investment from Round 3 of the National Stronger Regions Fund. Minister for Regional Development, Fiona Nash, said in Parkes last week the project would bring new jobs and business investment to the region. “I aim to help build the kinds of communities our children and grandchildren either want to stay in or come back to, and quality regional airports are a big part of that,” she said. Small Business Minister and Riverina MP, Michael McCormack, said the project would improve access to health services and leisure travel. “It will also generate new business activity within the local aviation sector, creating additional income and employment opportunities. The project includes a new helipad and fuelling/maintenance facility to support future disaster response operations, including medical emergencies.” Parkes Shire Mayor, Cr Ken Keith OAM, said the contribution by the Federal Gov-
ernment would ensure this important piece of infrastructure continues to deliver economic and social benefits to the entire region. “This next stage of the redevelopment project will encourage economic development, stimulate regional industry, enable businesses and industries to operate more efficiently and sustainably, and provide greater prosperity and opportunities for the region”, the Mayor said. According to Chairman of the Parkes Airport Committee, Councillor Alan Ward, stage 2 of construction consists of an extension of the airport apron and taxiway, developing a new hangar precinct and planning infrastructure for a helipad complex. “Construction activities are expected to generate 42 full time jobs and inject $5.3 million into the region’s catchment,” Cr Ward said. Two further projects in the Riverina received funding from the National Stronger Regions Fund with support going to the Central West Livestock Exchange in Forbes and a multipurpose community facility in Wagga Wagga.

Straighten Up It is World Spine Day on Sunday and the Chiropractors’ Association of Australia (CAA) is encouraging people to straighten up and move. World Spine Day is a global campaign to highlight the importance of physical activity and improving posture. It is estimated that one in six Australians (3.7 million) had chronic back problems in 2014–15, according to a report by the Australian Institute for Health and Welfare (AIHW). Poor posture may cause headaches, soreness, back pain, fatigue, respiratory issues and other issues by putting pressure on your spine. In some cases, it can be improved with the correct education, adjustment and awareness of the issue. Straighten Up Australia is an easy and enjoyable everyday program to improve your health and the way your body functions. It consists of a set of simple exercises and only takes three minutes to complete. You can download the program at www.chiropractors.asn.au/sua

Two Specialists At Family History Workshop At Parkes Library
Dozens of locals joined the Field of Women for morning tea.
Field Of Women A Touching Tribute
Lions Park went pink last Sunday as locals gathered for a free morning tea to show their support for women with breast cancer. Dianne Green, the McGrath Breast Care Nurse for the Parkes region, hosted the morning tea. This was the eighth Field of Women event that Dianne has organised to show her support for her clients, their families and the community. She catered for the morning tea with the generous help of her family, who also volunteered their time to help serve the dozens of people who stopped by to have a cuppa and a chat. Dianne said people attended the morning tea for a variety of reasons. Some came to remember lost ones, others wanted to show their support, and others might have had personal experience with breast cancer. One hundred pink lady silhouettes stood on the lawn as a symbolic gesture to the women diagnosed with breast cancer and all those around her. Attendees were invit-
ed to write a message of support or remembrance, which were then placed around a silhouette. Dianne said at the end of the day she’d read every single message, before neatly packing them away for the next year. “They’re beautiful heart-felt messages, and some of them make me cry,” she said. The carefully collated messages from the previous seven years were also on display. According to the Cancer Council statistics 16,000 Australians will face a breast cancer diagnosis this year. While the vast majority are women, the disease can also affect men. It is important to see your doctor if you have any concerns. The McGrath Breast Care Nurses provide free physical and emotional support for families who are affected by breast cancer from the time of diagnosis and throughout treatment. Two family history research specialists will be at Parkes Library at the end of the month to share their research knowledge and skills. Kaye Vernon, one of the original founders of Teapot Genealogy, has spent thousands of hours indexing records, reading tiny entries on microfilm and deciphering elaborate handwriting to make genealogical research easier and faster. Suzanne Voytas has been a compulsive family history researcher for years. Suzanne has helped many people discover their family history and enjoys helping new researchers learn how to do it and how to avoid the many pitfalls of family history research. Library Officer Dan Fredericks, organiser of the event, is looking forward to meeting Kaye and Suzanne and learning from them. “Kaye will share her tips about finding family history gems using unusual State Records of NSW records and tell stories about the plight of children during the 19th and 20th centuries. Songlines: The living narrative of our nation is the theme for NAIDOC 2016. For Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, the Dreamtime describes a time when the earth, people and animals were created by ancestral spiritual beings. They created the rivers, lakes, plants, land formations and living creatures. Dreaming tracks crisscross Australia and trace the journeys of ancestral spirits as they created the land, animals and lores. These dreaming tracks are sometimes called Songlines as they record the travels of these ancestral spirits who sung the land into life. Songlines are recorded in traditional songs, stories, dance and art. They carry significant spiritual and cultural connection
to knowledge, customs, ceremony and lore of many Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander language groups. Songlines are intricate maps of land, sea and country. They describe travel and trade routes, the location of waterholes and the presence of food. Aboriginal language groups are connected through the sharing of Songlines with each language group responsible for parts of a Songline. All Australians are invited to learn more about Songlines and explore those which have created the country in your region. Today Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities are using digital technologies to record and celebrate ancient Songlines or dreaming stories.

How long have you lived in Parkes? My wife and I moved to Parkes in March 2004 from Sydney. My father’s company was going to move here when I was 9 but it never eventuated. What do you enjoy the most about living in Parkes? I enjoy the simplistic lifestyle and a slower pace that goes with it. At times my life can be hectic and it is nice to live in an environment that is peaceful and relaxing. What do you do for work? I own and operate the Dish Cafe, Dish Catering Co and Dish Foods. What do you enjoy most about your work? I get bored really easy and need lots of diversity. My work brings that everyday. What makes your day? Having a problem that needs some thought and solving it. Not always smart enough to solve it myself and often need to rely on one of the many females in my daily life. How do you like your coffee? I used to drink a lot of coffee - not convinced it was doing me good, so took up tea. Peppermint at work, normal at home.

JUST FOR THE health of it!
Beat the Bite!
With the floods around the Central West, there are millions of mosquitoes that have called Parkes home and we’re not happy about it! So here are a few handy tips to help avoid their nasty bite this season. Mosquitos can carry diseases that may be passed on to humans through their bites. In Australia, these include Murray Valley encephalitis virus, Ross River virus, Barmah virus and dengue virus. Periods of heavy rainfall or floods can lead to ideal breeding conditions for mosquitoes in nontropical areas. These viruses can make people ill and, in severe cases, can cause death. To avoid getting bitten when they’re around, wear long loose-fitting clothing, cover up as much as possible, keep doors closed to avoid them coming into your home, use mosquito coils or insecticide candles in small outdoor areas and use an effective mosquito repellent. Repellents come in many forms: lotions, gels, pump sprays and aerosols. Lotions and gels are easier to apply, though all repellents containing DEET are the most effective at repelling mosquitos. These products are available in different strengths and the higher the concentration, the higher the protection. Natural repellents (such as Citronella) can provide protection for your little ones, whose skin is too sensitive to use medicated solutions. Citronella repellents also come in a patch and wristband form so as to not irritate the skin. At Life Pharmacy we can also supply you with a specially compounded mosquito repellent that contains no nasties. It is perfect for babies and young children. So don’t let the mozzies dictate your summer!

PARKES SPORT Last Championship Event
MIRROR IMAGE... The Burrendong coaching clinic – paddling on a glass lake.
Lachlan Dragons Trained By Famous Canadian Coach
Three Lachlan Dragon paddlers joined 36 other dragonboat enthusiasts from NSW at Burrendong Dam over the long weekend to be coached by renowned Canadian coach Kamini Jain. Warren and Donna Edwards and Claire Davis had a fantastic weekend with members from Dubbo, Forbes, Orange, Bathurst, Lithgow, Sydney, Wagga Wagga and Wollongong. “We were a little concerned about the weather forecast,” Donna admitted, “but were on the water by nine o’clock on Saturday morning, the waters were calm and Lake Burrendong at 126% capacity looked magnificent.” “The afternoon paddle was smooth and surreal,” said Warren. “It was the most peaceful and relaxing feeling, with us being the only ones on the Lake, apart from the birdlife and an occasional fish breaking the calm surface.” Under Kamini’s excellent coaching the paddlers could feel their techniques improving, and each paddler’s performance was filmed for individual evaluation and discussion.
Although this mixed bunch of paddlers had at first seemed a bit of a motley crew, by Sunday they had come to resemble something close to two professional crews paddling in harmony and rhythm across the still waters of Burrendong. “I can’t speak highly enough of the skills passed onto us by Kamini,” said Warren. “The results, by Sunday, were spectacular and I really feel that Kamini was proud of her efforts and success.” “It was a great weekend of learning from Kamini,” agreed Claire, “as well as from each other. And it was a real joy to feel part of this group as we watched each other’s skills develop.” If you would like to be part of this great sport, you can find us on Facebook or just come and meet us on Lake Forbes at 8:15am on Sundays or 5:45pm on Thursdays. Wear some sporting gear with old joggers or water shoes and bring your water bottle, hat, sunscreen and mozzierepellent. We’ll supply you with a paddle, a buddy to sit with in the boat, and some good friendly company. By Beth Thomas
The final major golf championship event of the year for both the men and ladies will be contested this Sunday. The men play the final round of the Dixon Physiotherapy sponsored 36 hole titles in both the championship and consolation sections, while the ladies play their 27 hole event in the same sections with titles sponsored by Betta Home Living and Network Video. The men already played the first round last weekend. Peter Dixon and John Green are halfway leaders after a superb opening round of 4 over par 75. They enjoy a 3 shot lead over Phil Barnard and Denis Howard, while Lachlan Buesnell and Cameron Butler are a further shot away. In the Consolation Section, Tony Hendry and Peter Bristol lead Michael Smith and Wayne Parker by 6 shots and appear likely to win their first title. In the Ladies 27 hole Foursomes both divisions will have the defending champions attempting to retain their mantle. In the Championship section, defending titleholders sisters Lynne Guise and Kaye Jones will be hard to toss with the major challengers being reigning Club Champion Cherrie Phillips and Glynis Conroy. In the Network Video Consolation section a period of inactivity by the reigning titleholders Judy McCabe and Leone Stevenson could haunt them despite the fact that they received a favourable draw. Consistency will pave the way for Colleen Staples and Dawn Wakefield to take the title.
