GREAT EXPERIENCE… The first Green Army team are from the left Brendan Bennett, Blake Janssen, Chelsi Edwards, Marg Applebee (CWLL), Dylan Hogan-Gibson, Laura Harvey, Adrian Whitaker and Guy Bennett (team supervisor).
First Green Army Marches Forth With Pride
The first Green Army team deployed in the Parkes and Forbes Shire Council areas did not only win the hearts and minds of everyone they worked with, but also made a valuable contribution to conservation projects. The team of six young participants graduated on Tuesday from Central West Lachlan Landcare (CWLL) after 20 weeks of work. “It was an amazing experience and I am very proud of myself,” said Chelsi Edwards, one of the participants. Thomas Staff of Skillset congratulated the team on their marvellous achievement saying the CEO of Skillset was amazed by the team’s positive spirit. The participants worked on several projects including the tree lines at the Central West Livestock Exchange at Forbes, two planting projects on Condobolin Road and
PAC Park and other projects. “All these projects have a focus on maintaining and improving biodiversity in our local area,” said CWLL Chair, Margot Jolly. Marg Applebee, CWLL Co-ordinator said: “It has been a pleasure to work with Skillset to provide work experience opportunities to young people. We hope this is the beginning of new opportunities and that they build on their skills acquired to pursue further employment.” CWLL will be working with Skillset again with a second team starting in mid-January 2017. Marg said she would like to hear from local landholders willing to work with CWLL and to contact her on 6862 4914. Young people interested in joining the Green Army should contact Skillset. Canola Farmers Help Disability Service Provider Recount Confirms New It is not every day that the growing of canola results in money donated to a disability service provider, but it is exactly what happened in Parkes this week. Currajong Disability Services received $13,000 from the Manildra-based canola processing company MSM Milling. The donation formed part of a charity partnership that saw the company team up with local farmers to grow the speciality canola variety Monola. The partnership was launched earlier this year to Parkes and Condobolin farmers as a means of helping them assist Currajong Disability Services raise funds to keep operating in the two towns. MSM Milling vowed to donate $10 per hectare of Monola planted by farmers followed by a bonus $5 per tonne payment for each tonne of Monola delivered to MSM. MSM Milling’s General Manager Commercial, Charlie Aldersey, said participating farmers sowed 1,300 hectares of Monola. “Many of the board positions at Currajong are filled by local farmers and we saw it as the logical way to help the charity,” he said. Charlie said the $13,000 was just the beginning of the funds that would be realised as Monola seeds would be arriving soon for the next instalment. The money will be used to help establish
a jujube, Chinese date, orchard in Parkes, which will provide employment to disabled clients. The Chairman of Currajong Disability Services, Neil Unger, said the jujube trees were planted in August. “The orchard already has 500 trees and we hope to plant more. This funding will really help us get it off the ground. Without the support of businesses like MSM Milling, we wouldn’t be able to undertake new projects like this,” Neil said. Parkes district farmer, Peter Barber, planted 150 hectares of Monola. “We’re just starting harvest and already we’ve found that the oil content is very high, which is extremely pleasing.”
Neil Unger, Chairman of Currajong Disability Services, receives the $13,000 donation from Charlie Aldersey, MSM Milling’s General Manager Commercial.
Member For Orange
Philip Donato of the Shooters, Fishers and Farmers party is the new Member for Orange. He was declared the winner nine days after the Orange by-election and a recount of votes. He took the seat by just 50 votes from his Nationals counterpart Scott Barrett. It is the first time in the party’s 21-year history to have a Member of Parliament in the Lower House. “I am humbled by the result and to be the seventh Shooters, Fishers and Farmers Party representative elected nation wide,” Philip said. He promised to be a representative for all people in the Orange electorate. “I will work hard to gain everybody’s trust.” Scott said in a press statement he met with the winner to formally concede. “I thanked him for the upstanding and respectful way in which he conducted himself during this by-election campaign,” Scott said. With the win, Philip ended the Nationals’ 69-year stranglehold on the regional electorate. The Nationals held the seat by more than 20% before the by-election. The seat of Orange became vacant when former MP Andrew Gee resigned to run for Federal Parliament.

How to declutter your finances
deal on your home loan, or choosing a credit card that has a lower monthly interest charge. With some simple calculations, you’ll soon see how these kinds of debt management strategies could save you a lot of money over the long term.
We are about to start a new year, so why not make a fresh financial start?
Streamline your super
Achieving your financial goals isn’t simply a matter of earning more. It’s also about making your money work smarter for you. Build a budget
Making a budget will help you keep your spending on track, so you can save more and pay off debts faster. By having a clear picture of how much money is coming in and how much you’re regularly spending, it will be easier to find ways to cut out unnecessary costs. Start by keeping a record of all your earnings and expenses for at least a month. Then, you can spot ways to reduce your spending, like bundling your phone and internet, or shopping in bulk. With a clear budget in place, you may discover that your debts are costing you more than they need to be. Consider shopping around for a better
By consolidating your super you can usually save on fees and charges, which can add up significantly over the years. Having a single super account also means less paperwork, so it’s easier to keep track of how your retirement investments are faring, or to change your investment strategy to suit your life stage. And if you think you may still have funds lurking in an old super account somewhere, you can find your lost super using the Australian Tax Office’s Super Seeker tool. A word of warning though - when consolidating your super accounts, make sure you look into the potential risks – for example, there may be potential exit fees or loss of insurance. While you’re focusing on your super, it might also be a good time to consider increasing your contributions through a salary sacrificing arrangement. This can be a tax-effective way of boosting your super, because additional contributions of up to $35,000 are usually taxed at a rate of only 15%.
Investigate your insurance
With any financial plan, it’s worth making sure you have the right types of insurance cover for your circumstances. Having adequate life insurance and total permanent disability insurance means your family’s lifestyle will be supported if you pass away or become permanently disabled. Critical illness can cover medical and other expenses, while income protection insurance can provide vital regular payments to cover your bills and expenses if you’re unable to work due to illness or injury. But how much insurance is enough? It all depends on your needs, debts and income. The default cover offered through your super fund may be sufficient, but often is not — and it could mean you save on premiums and have less paperwork to deal with than if you had multiple policies through different insurers. However, everyone’s situation is different, so it might be worth getting professional advice before making any major insurance decisions. Get the right advice A financial adviser can help you make the most of your money and achieve your lifestyle goals. To find out more, you can contact us.

Meals On Wheels Deliver Thanks
Meals on Wheels hosted a Christmas lunch on Wednesday, but it was the volunteers’ turn to receive a meal. Eighty-six of the Meals on Wheels volunteers came together for the luncheon filling the Parkes Bowling and Sports Club with Christmas cheer and plenty of good will. Meals on Wheels Manager Gillian Kinsella said it was wonderful to provide a meal for them. “We really appreciate what they do,” she said. “Without our wonderful volunteers the service couldn’t run.” The volunteers deliver 300 hot and frozen meals each week in Parkes alone, providing a vital service to the local community. The service isn’t just about supplying nutritious
food, Meals on Wheels allows people to remain in their own homes, helping them to maintain their independence for as long as possible. The volunteers also offer social interaction, and can provide important social analysis and welfare checks to clients who might otherwise be isolated. While Wednesday’s luncheon was about showing gratitude to the volunteers, the service’s clients weren’t forgotten. On Thursday 150 Meals on Wheels patrons were invited to celebrate Christmas at another special luncheon at the Parkes Bowling and Sports Club. This time it was the clients who were delivered to their meals, with transport specially organised for the
clients who were able to attend. Meals on Wheels also operates in Peak Hill, Trundle, Tullamore and Bogan Gate. By Raen Fraser

My House My Home It’s The Little Things In Life.... As we grow older and our lives get busier I keep going back to this simple belief of mine. It is the little things in life that are important to our well being. As our routines and commitments get more hectic it is the time we spend in our own homes that becomes precious. Our homes can feed our souls and enrich our lives. It can be a sanctuary from the pressures of the outside world. So how do we create these havens of bliss where we can relax and make everlasting memories with our family and friends? We want a home that looks sensational and has the WOW factor, but is easy to maintain and an absolute joy to live in. Follow these guidelines and tips. •
A home free from clutter is a breeze to live in. If objects have a place to be stored away in when not in use, your home can be free from mess.
•
Remember the age-old adage that less is always more. This is my mantra that I follow to the letter. I always have one big WOW piece on a piece of furniture and the rest of the surface is empty. This minimalistic approach is very easy to achieve and makes cleaning and dusting a breeze as there is not a plethora of objects to move.
•
Always have a neutral colour palette to work from in each decorating project.
This makes changing more dramatic pieces a breeze because you have not limited yourself by bold paint or curtaining choices. •
Cushions can perform magic tricks. The addition of cushions can literally change the feel and style of a room. They can bring cohesion to an overall design of a space and add colour, texture and intimacy to a space.
•
Rugs define zones and create different areas effortlessly within today’s open plan living areas. A plush rug will also add warmth, texture and cosiness to any room.
•
Be realistic and make sure the choices you make in decorating and styling your home will suit your lifestyle. The choices we make should enhance the way we choose to live rather than be a hindrance.
When I enter my home, I feel such a sense of contentment and excitement that I am lucky enough to live within this space with my family. I make sure that I take time to really enjoy all the different spaces and areas within my home and to allow myself time to just be in the moment. My home energizes me and sends me out into the world again with renewed vigour. Wouldn’t it be great if you too could experience this every day? By Karen Creith

Sew Lovely To See Embroidered Art Some nice threads are on display at the Parkes Shire Library during November, with a discrete yet impressive exhibition of embroidery. The works are on tour from the 2015 Sydney Quilt and Craft Fair at Glebe Island, and were selected from entries around NSW. The main criterion for the works was they had to be sewn onto a white background, and they had to be the artist’s original design. The impressive artworks represent many hours of needlework, and a closer inspection reveals the talent and skill behind the creations. Some embroiderers used a combination of stitches to create texture and dimensionality, which literally brings the design out of the fabric; a couple of ingenious stitch-work
techniques were used to create three-dimensional coral reef scapes. Others used colour and design to create an image; even a simple straight stitch made some pretty pictures. The display also includes work from the Parkes’ Embroiderer’s Guild, as well as some of their tools of trade. The Parkes Embroiderer’s Guild group meet twice a month and enjoy adding a social element to their handicraft. There is a wide range of skills within the group, and a lot of knowledge sharing. The Guild members all agree that while embroidery teaches patience and is usually calming, it can be frustrating. The Parkes Embroiderers’ Guild Display will be at the Parkes Shire Library until Wednesday, 30th November.
NSW Health is urging people to safeguard against mosquito bites after a marked increase in detections of the mosquito-borne Ross River and Barmah Forest viruses. Stephen Doggett, Senior Scientist at NSW Health Pathology, said recent flooding had caused a proliferation in the number of mosquitoes. With added swarms of mosquitoes we have detected Ross River Virus and Barmah Forest Virus in mosquitoes in Forbes, Griffith, Leeton, and Moama. “Ross River and Barmah Forest viruses are spread by bites from mosquitoes that have fed on animals that carry the virus. These viruses are not fatal to humans but they can cause persistent and debilitating symptoms
such as joint aches and pains, fever, chills, headache and sometimes a rash. The rash usually disappears after seven to ten days, but some people may experience these symptoms for weeks or even months. So far 63 cases of people with Ross River and Barmah Forest virus have been confirmed. The best way to avoid infection is to avoid being bitten by mosquitoes.”
Local embroiderers demonstrate their handicraft at the Parkes Shire Library with the stitched circles collection. From the left are Stephanie Brown, Dale Bearman, Coral Barber, Margaret Lewis, Erica Frame and Lynne Henry.

DEET or Picaridin are best. Repellents containing oil of lemon eucalyptus or pMenthane-3.8-diol (PMD) also provides adequate protection. Don’t use repellents on children under the age of three months. Instead use physical barriers such as netting on prams, cots and play areas for babies. Light mosquito coils or use vaporising mats indoors. When mosquitoes are inside, use insecticide sprays, especially behind furniture and dark places. When camping, use flyscreens, or sleep under mosquito nets. Get rid of items that hold water around the house.

Celebrate Forbes Community Spirit At Christmas Festival
Forbes will be the place to be tomorrow with the annual Find it in Forbes Christmas Festival invading the CBD for a morning of festivities. It is an event not to be missed on the local calendar as there will be plenty on offer for the whole family. A super loaded morning has been planned with the popular Forbes Farmers Markets joining forces with the Forbes Business Chamber to bring a huge selection of market stalls to the CBD. There will also be live entertainment featuring some excellent local singing talent. Business Chamber President, Chris Roylance, said: “The morning will be an opportunity for the community to join local businesses in a showcase of what we have to offer. Everyone from across the region should get to Forbes and explore the wonderful shopping experience we have to offer. Not only will it be about the shopping, but about a morning of music and kids entertainment, including a special visit from Santa.” In partnership with Vanfest, the Business Chamber is anticipating one of its biggest weekends on the tourism calendar with thousands of people from across the country set to flock to Forbes for the annual music festival. Chris Roylance said: “We want to make sure there are plenty for locals and visitors to do and really show why Forbes is the
best place in the country to visit. Following on from the recent flood events in September and October, this is an opportunity for the community to rebuild and show our city counterparts the spirit that is alive and well in Forbes.” There will also be chance to win prizes with over $1,500 worth of Why Leave Town dollars given away on the morning to lucky winners who have been shopping locally in the Find it in Forbes promotion, which kicked off at the end of October. Everyone making purchases in participating stores tomorrow will receive entries to win their share in the major prize pool of $15,000 which will be drawn on 22nd December. With a nine o’clock start tomorrow, and extended trading throughout Forbes in the lead up to Christmas, there will be lots on offer for people travelling to town, as well as local shoppers starting their Christmas shopping.

Inland Rail Project On Track The Melbourne to Brisbane Inland Rail project is set to make tracks in 2018, according to the Australian Rail Track Corporation (ARTC). The first stages of the 1,700km long rail line will commence in 2018. It will be worth $16 billion to the Australian economy over the next 50 years. A spokesperson for ARTC said at a conference in Toowoomba recentlly: “The project is now two years into the 10 year $10.5 billion program.” The head offices for the project will be in Brisbane with satellite offices in Sydney and Toowoomba. Parkes Shire Mayor and Chair of the Melbourne to Brisbane Inland Rail Alliance, Cr Ken Keith OAM, attended the congress and said the news was encouraging for the region. “This is a critical piece of national infrastructure and will open up a corridor of opportunity from Brisbane to Melbourne, with Parkes uniquely positioned to leverage economically. “The Inland Rail is set to generate $1.8 billion for Northern Western and Central NSW and $2.6 billion for the whole of NSW,” the Mayor said. New state-of-the-art equipment is set to be used in the construction process, which will require 1.6 million sleepers, 2.5 million tonnes of ballast and 138,000 tonnes of rail. It is hoped that much of these products will be sourced and procured locally enhancing local economies along the proposed route, including the Parkes Shire. A report will be finalised by March next year regarding opportunities for investment in the Inland Rail. For more information about Inland Rail visit http://inlandrail.artc. com.au/

Australian Cricketer Attracts Large Crowd At Autism Golf Day
CELEBRITY PLAY… Former Australian Cricketer Jeff Thomson (left) with his team of Garth Simpson, Daniel Dick (Manager John Holland Parkes) and Parkes’ own Elvis (aka Allan Gersbach).
Former Australian test cricketer Jeff Thomson proved a big attraction for players and guests at Sunday’s fundraising day sponsored by John Holland Construction. The 3 Person Ambrose event was in aid of the Central West Autism Awareness & Special Needs Awareness Group. Significant funds were raised to enable the organisation to erect ten Buddy Benches at schools in Parkes, Forbes and Peak Hill, as well as a bus shelter and a new
22-seater bus with specialty equipment fitted for wheelchair use for school outings. In his address to the large crowd Jeff Thomson had a lot to say about the current system of team selections and its administration. He accepted questions from the crowd and proved to be a great ambassador for the game. However on the golf course it was the team of Matthew Duffy, Scott Hendry and Tim Magill who dominated play as they
returned an excellent round of five under par 66 for a nett 54 ½ to finish nearly three shots ahead of the field. The runners-up team consisted of Michael Dumesny, Mark Dwyer and John Davies on 57 1/6 nett, and in third place it was Phil Smith, Paul Murray and Matt Spedding on 58 nett. The much sought after Bradman’s award saw the schoolteachers team of Sherree Rosser, Judy Elliott and Elaine Bright record a narrow victory. The Nearest the Pin awards saw Andrew Huntly take out the 1st hole at 585cm, Michael Hunt the 4th hole at 55cm, Jack Murray the 6th hole at 359cm, Luke Cross the 11th hole at 93cm and on the final Par 3 the 15th, it was Michael Dumesny who excelled at 300cm. The Long Drive competition was won by Nathan Munday at close to 300m on the 8th hole. The general consensus was that all players enjoyed the day’s golf and they were full of praise for the sponsors and the event organisers, in particular the efforts of Jodie Goonrey and David Whitfield. Tomorrow members will contest an 18 hole Stableford for the Court Press trophy, while the Ladies will also contest an 18 hole Stableford competition for a Club trophy. By Paul Thomas
Parkes Women’s Bowling Club The combined charity day with the Parkes Railway Diggers was very enjoyable and successful. Ronald McDonald House will benefit from the day. Several pairs games were played and the winners on the day were Diane Greenhalgh and Robyn Morgan with 2 wins plus 11 and runners-up were Audrey Jones and Elaine Bradley with 2 wins plus 7. Winners of the spider prizes were June Burgess, Gwenda Carty, Diane Greenhalgh, Evelyn Gibson, Bev Ellis and Maree
Grant. The winner of the raffle was Gwenda Carty and second prize went to Diane Greenhalgh. Our Presentation Day and Christmas Lunch will be held on 13th December. Names on board please; lunch is $15. To play Social Bowls please ring table selectors Brenda Davies and Marja Iffland between 8.30am and 9am. Social roster is Merilyn Rodgers. By Rosemary Mitchell
The victors of the pairs games were from the left Audrey Jones and Eileen Bradley (winners), and Diane Greenhalgh and Robyn Morgan (runners-up).

Have You Got Your Elf On The Shelf Yet? At the North Pole, Santa has many helpers who make the Christmas season special! His scout elves serve as his eyes and ears in homes around the world… The Elf on the Shelf is being accepted into more and more homes each year. The children’s book The Elf on the Shelf: A Christmas Tradition came out in 2004 and tells a Christmas-themed story that explains how Santa Claus knows who is naughty and who is nice. The story describes how Santa’s scout Elves hide in people’s homes to watch over events. But first the scout elves need to be named. Once a family has named the elf, it receives its special Christmas magic, which allows it to fly to and from the North Pole. At night when everyone goes to bed, the scout elf flies back to the North Pole to report to Santa the activities, good and bad, that have taken place. Before the family wakes up each morning, the scout elf flies back from the North Pole and hides. By hiding in a new spot each morning, the scout elf and the family play an ongoing game of hide and seek. The Elf on the Shelf is available at Colouby Creations in Parkes.
