Parkes Businesses Hope ‘For The Good Times’ From next Wednesday Parkes will be all gold and glitter for the silver jubilee of the Elvis Festival. Businesses were hard at work this week to stake their gold claim for the biggest influx of visitors to town with more than 25,000 people expected to attend the Viva Las Vegas-themed festival boosting the local economy by as much as $15 million. “We are just about ready,” said Kirsty Berry of Colouby Creations on Tuesday. “We have been selling costumes, wigs, glasses, handbags and anything else with Elvis’ face on it for the past six years. We are usually flat out for about ten days, but it is brilliant.” Rosemary Mitchell, President of the Craft Corner, said they were much better prepared this year. “As we are so centrally located we get thousands of people looking for Elvis items. This year we will have plenty of stock including Elvis cushions, bracelets, watches and skirts to name a few.” She said all items were handmade by Craft Corner members. Owner of The Red Chandelier, Janine Simpson said: “I can’t wait for Elvis. It is so exciting and there is such a buzz and good mood in town during the festival that it makes us all feel alive. I had people dancing in my shop last year!”

MAYORAL NOTES In my first mayoral message for 2017, I would like to extend a very warm welcome to our returning guests and new friends as we prepare to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the Parkes Elvis Festival with a Viva Las Vegas theme. To celebrate this milestone a special 25th Anniversary Gala Dinner is being held on Wednesday, 11th January. Tickets can still be purchased from the Parkes Leagues Club at www.parkesleaguesclub.com. With more than 120 individual events taking place over the five days, we are expecting to welcome over 22,000 festival-goers to town, set to surpass last year’s visitation numbers. Be sure to secure your piece of history with an official souvenir program, calendar and the Festival’s 25th Anniversary DVD ‘This is Our Story’, all available for purchase from the Parkes Information Centre, the Elvis Central Store, Council’s Administration Building and other participating businesses. These are great keepsakes to take home to show family and friends just how much fun you had at the Parkes Elvis Festival. Free Festival pocket guides are also available throughout town and I encourage everyone to pick one up and start planning your itinerary so you don’t miss a thing! A big thank you goes out to our dedicated volunteers, valued sponsors and supporters, Elvis Revival Incorporated, local busi-
nesses, community members and Parkes Shire Council staff for all their hard work in preparation to the 2017 Festival - no doubt it will be our biggest and best one yet! I would like to make special mention of the founders of the Festival, Bob and Anne Steel, whose unwavering dedication over the past 25 years has led to its success. Finally, with temperatures on the rise, I encourage all festival-goers to keep hydrated and slip, slop, slap throughout the festivities. I look forward to rock ‘n’ rolling with you all next week. Yours Faithfully, Cr Ken Keith OAM Mayor of Parkes Shire

Tullamore Irish Festival: The festival has launched its new and improved event format for this year with a music concert focus. The event kicks off on Good Friday with Peter Byrne returning as Friday’s headliner with band, Celtic Beat. Saturday’s entertainment will be capped off with Irish favourite, Damien Leith supported by the outstanding Seltic Sirens. This is Damien’s third time to Tullamore, having performed at the festival in 2016 and 2013. “Aside from the fantastic music, there’ll be plenty to see and do including market stalls, food, face painting, rides, and unique Irish games to keep everyone entertained. The entertainment is free for kids all day on the Saturday,” said Festival President, Paul Stanbrook. For information visit www.tullamore.org.au. Old Hospital Site Blank Canvas For Redevelopment The demolition of the 110-year-old Parkes hospital was completed just before Christmas. It took four months to complete the project that was delivered on time and within budget. Parkes Shire Council’s Director Engineering Services, Ben Howard was pleased the project had been completed in a cost efficient and timely manner. “The second phase of the demolition process saw the contractors transport the building material off site for crushing. This allowed the demolition phase to be finished ahead of the nominated completion date.” Ben said with the main demolition phase complete, final site works would pave the way for a new residential redevelopment and repurposing of the two remaining buildings. The fence erected around the site will remain as final site works are carried out to remove all the footings and underground utilities, top dressing, and seeding all affected areas. “The removal of all hazardous building materials has been done in compliance with the hazardous materials guidelines and furthermore, no incidents or safety is-

sues arose throughout the entire project”, Ben said. The old hospital was demolished following the NSW Government’s $72.8 million investment towards building the new hospital just off the Forbes Road, which was officially opened in 2015. Health District welcomes new Chairperson: The Board for Western NSW Local Health District has a new chairperson and four new members. Following the end of his six-year tenure as Chair, Dr Robin Williams stepped down at the end of last year. Health Minister Jillian Skinner appointed Scott Griffiths PSM in the role. He has been a member of the Board for the past six years, and chair of the finance and performance sub-committee for the same period. Western NSW Local Health District Chief Executive, Scott McLachlan said Dr Williams and the Board had been instrumental in leading the organisation towards a clearer vision and pioneering the introduction of key health strategies, including the very successful Integrated Care initiative.
You Can Even Rock ‘n’ Poeticise At Elvis Festival
Poetry might not be the first image that springs to mind when you think of Elvis, but the Poet’s Breakfast is becoming increasingly popular at the Parkes Festival. Draw inspiration from the Viva Las Vegas theme this year, or from one of Elvis’ many hit songs, or even from the festival itself. The Poet’s Breakfast is said to be the perfect way to get into the spirit of the festival. There will be prizes for the Best Novice Poet and Open Contender, as well as a People’s Choice Award and a performance from local star Barry Green. The 2016 Poets Breakfast winner, Peter Robinson said: “Parkes Elvis Festival is an incredible event and the Poet’s Breakfast is one of the many highlights for me. This year my daughter and I will once again compete.” So find your inner poet and share your love of The King on Thursday, 12th January at 7:30am at the Parkes Bolwing & Sports Club. For more information contact 6862 6000.

Winner’s Spotlight Shines On Red Chandelier
With most of the Christmas lights and decorations packed away for another year, one business owner in town is still glowing with the result of her effort. Local boutique, The Red Chandelier won the Best Dressed Window Competition that was run as part of Parkes Shire Council’s Shop + Win promotion and main street illumination project. Janine Simpson’s winter wonderland display sparkled enough to catch the judges’ eye as they looked for the best initiative to fit the ‘sparkly after dark’ criteria to help ignite the Parkes main street shopping precinct. “I was really gobsmacked to win,” said Janine. “It was really lovely to receive this kind of recognition 12 months after opening my business.” She received a $500 advertising prize package as part of next year’s Christmas shopping campaign. Janine said her window displays often lead to lots of conversations with her customers. Council’s Economic and Business Development Manager, Anna Wyllie said the effort that local businesses had put into dressing their window displays had contributed to the overall atmosphere in the main street.
“We are so pleased with how the main street has come alive with the illuminations and lights sparkling on buildings and the local business owners in the main street have certainly added their own element of sparkle to provide a great spectacle for locals and visitors to our town,” said Anna. The Shop + Win promotion is still running with the chance of winning a trip to Las Vegas valued at $4,000. This campaign runs until the final day of the Parkes Elvis Festival.

OUR Gal
Cathy Treasure How long have you lived in Parkes? We only moved here six months ago. What do you like about Parkes? There’s a lot to like; seeing stars at night is lovely, it only takes five minutes to drive to work, the friendly people, and being closer to my family. Where do you work? I’m the Parkes Elvis Festival Director. What do you enjoy about your work? It’s a fun, quirky event. I like the variety that comes with the role. I get to meet a wide range of interesting people, plus I got to know most of Parkes in just six months. What is your favourite hobby or activity? I love listening to live music, going back to the family farm, playing with my kids, and when I have more time, I like to try to play netball, basketball and squash. How do you like your coffee? White and one. What makes your day? My kids when they laugh. It’s corny, but true. What is your idea of a dream holiday and where would you go? I like to get off the beaten track and explore. I really love Africa, but I desperately want to go to Malaysian Borneo to explore the different cultures and wildlife.

Australian Rock Superstar Is 23rd Inductee Digby George “Dig” Richards will be posthumously honoured at the Elvis Wall of Fame at the Kelly Reserve in Parkes next Wednesday in one of the first events of the 25th Elvis Festival. Dig will join 22 other Australian music legends on the Wall of Fame. The ceremony at 2pm will be followed by The Wall of Fame Show in honour of Dig at the Parkes Services Club at 4pm. Fellow Wall of Famers Rob E.G., Little Pattie and Lucky Starr will perform, as well as Dig’s brother Doug Richards, who played with Rob E.G. and Lucky Starr and lives in Parkes these days. “I am looking forward to the show,” said Lucky Starr. “It’s been a long time since I’ve worked with Rob E.G. and Doug.” He said
Dig was his best mate and his inclusion on the Wall of Fame has been long overdue. Dig was best known as lead singer of the R’Jays and their first single, I Wanna Love You, was written by Dig’s 15-year-old brother, Doug. The song peaked at no. 7 on radio station 2UE’s Top 40. The group’s second single, I’m Through, also penned by Doug, reached the Top 40 shortly after. Dig became one of Australia’s first wave of Rock ‘n Rollers, and one of the Top Five Australian Rock Superstars of the 1958/59 era with Johnny O’Keefe, Col Joye and Joynny Devlin. Dig, Rob E.G. (Robie Porter) and Johnny Devlin were billed together as The Rat Pack and became an institution on Saturdays in Sydney.
