We Come To You WELCOME NEW AUSSIES… The largest Australian Citizenship Ceremony ever held in Parkes took place at the Parkes Shire Council chambers on Tuesday. Mayor Ken Keith welcomed 14 new Australians from seven different countries to Parkes.
Record Number Of New Aussies
Fourteen new citizens pledged their loyalty to Australia and its people on Tuesday, making it the largest Citizenship Ceremony to be held by the Parkes Shire Council. Mayor Ken Keith welcomed the new Australians, who have come from all over the globe. The new citizens have come from as far away as Scotland, Iran, Pakistan, India, Thailand, and the Philippines, with one from neighbouring New Zealand. Our newest citizens have already called Australia home for at least five years, although former Scotsman James Murray boasts the longest residency – he has lived here for 29 years. James came to Australia from Scotland in 1988, and has lived in Parkes since 1993. James is the Regional NSW Manager with Linfox Logistics.

LETTERS... Dear Editor,
MAYORAL NOTES I would firstly like to thank our wonderful Rural Fire Service (RFS) for keeping watch this summer. While the Parkes Shire has avoided any major fires during this period of extreme heat, it is timely to thank all our volunteer fire fighters who make themselves available. Their services have been called upon on several occasions this summer with early intervention limiting damage. Parkes is gearing up to host the Local Government Touch Carnival at Cheney Park tomorrow. Celebrating 25 years, the Carnival attracts teams from across the state, comprising of Australian and Local Government employees, allied organisations and their families. I encourage everyone to get along to Cheney Park and cheer on the players from 9am. Residents and visitors are encouraged to explore the quirky depictions of the Australian landscapes, when Parkes Shire Library hosts an exhibition by contemporary artist and ABC journalist, Gavin Coote during March. Gavin’s surreal paintings go on exhibition at the Library on 1st March, with an official opening on Friday, 3rd March at 6pm. If you would like to meet Gavin at the official opening, please RSVP on 6861 2309.
Thanks for the items you put in the Phoenix which I generally enjoy reading. You used to have a page of puzzles - suduko, crossword, etc. It would be greatly appreciated by the number of people that I have talked to, if that could be re-instated.

Contemporary Art: Parkes Library is hosting an exhibition from western NSW artist Gavin Coote from 1st to 24th March. Gavin is also a journalist in a country town, but has always integrated some form of creativity into his life. He spent his early years drawing tractors, harvesters and windmills that dotted the landscape of the farm where he grew up the first half of his childhood. “The Australian landscape is something that has incredible power over my creative work, as is the case with any artist who has the utmost privilege of living in this beautiful country!” said Gavin. Please RSVP on 6861 2309 if you would like to attend the official opening at 6pm on 3rd March. Gavin will be in attendance to have a beer and talk art.

PCYC News
Fun KinderGym At the PCYC For Little Ones The mission of the PCYC is to get young people active in life. The Parkes PCYC start with the youngest of the young offering KinderGym classes to three to five-year-olds every Wednesday from 11:00 to 11:45. “We have younger siblings joining in too,” said Kerry Hodges, the experienced gymnastics coach at the PCYC who takes the classes. Kerry, who has qualifications in a range of gymnastics classes, is an accredited KinderGym leader. The aim of KinderGym, as it is also known, is to make learning fun while teaching concepts of movement. The emphasis is on free play and structured activities to assist the development of fine and gross motor skills, as well as hand-eye co-ordination in
young children. Children get to know all the gymnastics equipment by swinging on the ropes and bars and walking on the beam. “We do something different each week to keep it varied and interesting,” said Kerry. Unlike all the other gymnastics classes on offer at the PCYC, the KinderGym class does not have a waiting list. “Parents are welcome to come and try a class,” said Kerry. The cost is $12 for a casual class, or $8 per class for a term, plus PCYC membership of $10 per year. If you would like more information on KinderGym or any of the other gymnastics classes at the PCYC, contact Kerry on kerry1@ipstarmail.com.au.

Wacky Graduation For Reading Heroes The heroes and villains of the Summer Reading Club not only achieved their mission - they shattered it by reading more than double the amount of books. The 230 members of the Parkes Shire Library’s Summer Reading Club were set the task to read 888 books over the summer. Last Thursday they were invited to a Heroes and Villains graduation party to celebrate the total of 1,787 books read by children from across the Shire. The party was a big celebration of reading, but also a fun event for the kids to see the library staff doing some crazy activities. Debbie Gould, Library Officer, said when a member returned a completed reading record to the library they were asked to vote for a wacky challenge the library team would perform at the party. “The Library team anxiously watched the voting, wondering what the kids wanted us to do.” The top three crazy challenges voted for were spraying their hair different colours, being wrapped as a mummy in toilet paper and catching balls with a bucket on their heads. There were lots of smiles and shrieks of joy as the kids transformed four staff members into mummies with toilet rolls. There were even more excitement when they could unwrap the mummies with toilet paper flying everywhere. Super awards were also given to members who significantly contributed to the reading total. They were Brendan Bates, Harrison and Matilda Smede, Annabelle Border, Chloe Mudiman and Hareem Akmal from Parkes; Freya Berry from Trundle; Kayliah and Shanae Alvey from Tullamore and John and Peter Thomas from Peak Hill.

Historic Birthday For Len!
The initiator of the Henry Parkes Museum is celebrating a milestone birthday on Monday. Len Unger is turning 100 on 27th February, and the Museum will be celebrating its 50th anniversary this year. “The Parkes Historical Society would like to pay tribute to one of our oldest members, Len Unger,” said Yvonne Hutton, President of the Parkes Historial Society. “Len is the only member of our Society left who had the forethought to start Henry Parkes Museum 50 years ago in 1967. “We first opened in the Salvation Army Citadel but we were only there for a short time.” Yvonne said Len lent the society the money to purchase their second home, the Masonic Hall. “Len was also a founding member of our Pioneer Antique Machinery Museum in 1970, and we are still here on Peak Hill Road 47 years later.” According to Yvonne, Len and several other members scoured the Parkes district for many of the Museum’s very valuable machinery itmes. “Len and all those early members worked so hard to preserve our town and agricultural history,” said Yvonne. Len is a resident at Rosedurnate these days. “Happy 100th Birthday Len from all the members!”
MUMMY MADNESS… Dan Fredericks of the Parkes Shire Library being turned into a mummy by the members of the Summer Reading Club. The wacky challenge was one of the rewards for the 230 members for smashing the reading target of 888 books by reading more than double the amount.
Club members could read anything books, magazines, newspapers, comics and listen to stories on CD or online. All the participants received a certificate for successfully completing the challenge. By Maggi Barnard

In The Central West we have a great climate for at least six months of the year. So in autumn and spring we don’t need to be too concerned with temperature extremes. On the other hand, our summers can get very warm and our winters rather cold. Experience has shown the experts at the Glassplace that Low E grey tinted glass performs well in both summer and winter. How does Low E tinted glass work? (Other names are smart glass, pyrolytic glass, or comfort glass.) Low E grey glass cuts down the U value of a window or door. This is the amount of heat moving through the glass due to the difference in temperature: from the inside to the outside of your home, or office. Low E glass can therefore reduce your heating bill and your cooling costs. Low E grey glass also reduces the total solar radiation coming through the glass. This is the Solar Heat Gain Co-efficient or SHGC. It also reduces glare to make your home more comfortable in summer. The lower the numbers, the more benefit you will get from Low E glass. If you still feel a bit confused about this glass, but want to know more, why not drop into the new Glassplace showroom in Clarke Street, Parkes. They will show you examples of Low E Glass in full sized windows so you can see what it looks like. You can also have a go at their radiant
heat display to actually feel the difference Low E glass can make in your home. Give them a call today!
Low E grey tinted glass performs well in hot and cold conditions and can help to make the extreme seasons more comfortable.

My House My Home Home Staging Adds Value I have been very busy over the last few months staging a variety of homes for sale. Staging a home is very important and can add value to your property and thus give you more money in your pocket after sale day. Staging works perfectly when a home is empty and unfurnished. It gives me a blank canvas to enter and create magic within that will have any prospective buyer simply falling in love with your home and thus wanting it to be their home. An empty home is devoid of personality and the WOW factor and will not let that property to stand out from the crowd and create, no matter how good its bones are. It would not make a lasting impression on a prospective buyer. With staging people hire my services and furniture for a specific period of time, usually six weeks to entice a quick and profitable sale from the marketplace. It is simple and stress-free but the results absolutely speak for themselves. Pictured right, are my favourite before and after images from a home staged last week in Dubbo. The clients and the real estate agent were so happy that I think a speedy sale could be just around the corner. One home I staged last year in Orange didn’t even get to show its charm as it was snavelled up the first day it was listed for sale. It just looked that good! By Karen Creith

MAKE THE MOST OF YOUR MOBILE: These days just about everyone has a smart phone, so here are a few outside-the-box tips and tricks to help you make the most of your mobile. 1. Switch your phone to airplane mode to charge it faster. Also, use airplane mode when out of range to save the battery. 2. Have a cable but no charger? Use a TV’s USB port to charge your phone. Like computers, many modern TVs and set-top boxes have a USB port somewhere on their side or at their back – a great idea for international hotels. 3. Use a cup to boost your phone’s volume. Place your phone inside a clean, empty glass to create makeshift speaker. The resonance created by the vessel amplifies the volume. 4. Turn your camera’s torch into a lantern. Sit a clear water bottle (with the lid on) on top of your phone’s torch. This will diffuse the light and create a soft, pleasant glow. 5. Ziploc bags are great for storing phones, not just food. This is a great idea for many outdoors activities – bag your phone to keep dirt, sand and water away.

OUR Bloke Lionel Lovett
How long have you lived in Parkes and what do you like about living here? I have lived in Parkes for around 35 years. I wasn’t born here, but I call it my home town. What I like about Parkes is the people I have met over the years. Parkes is a community that has an endless supply of good people. Where do you work and what do you enjoy about your work? I work at Parkes Public School, and the thing I like about working here is the school community: the staff that I work with and the students’ families that I meet and greet every day. What do you do to unwind after work or on weekends? I like to unwind by just lying on the lounge watching a good movie or TV programme. What are you really good at? I don’t really know what I’m good at, but I do have a knack for looking at things differently. If you could have a super power, what would it be? My super power would be teleporting. What is your pet hate? I don’t think I have a pet hate, but if I did it would probably be people not refilling the printer or photocopiers. Tell us about your best holiday ever. I loved a Christmas and New Year holiday. My family went to the Gold Coast, doing all the theme parks and eating out. We stayed in a penthouse at a hotel for a week. Then we spent another week at Port Macquarie, where we just travelled around the area seeing the sights. One thrill was watching my son catch his first fish on his own. Awesome sight!
& SPORTS INJURIES CENTRE
Keeping you fit for life
Shin Splints With summer sports winding up and preseason training for winter sports commencing, it is not surprising that today I saw my first case of shin splints (Medial Tibial Stress Syndrome), for this year. Medial Tibial Stress Syndrome (MTSS) is the medical name for lower leg pain that occurs below the knee on either the front outside part of the leg (anterior shin splints) or the inside of the leg (medial shin splints). MTTS is a common injury seen in many running or jumping based sports for example, basketball, netball, football or hockey. Shin splints most commonly occur when repetitive or prolonged activities place strain on where the muscles attach to the outside lining of the bone (tenoperiosteum). Put simply, the cause of MTTS can be summed up in four words: too much too soon. Athletes often first experience shin pain early in the season due to deconditioning and when training surfaces are generally harder. Later in the season it can be caused by increased load or fatigue from over training and not allowing enough time for recovery between activities. If you have shin splints stretch your calf muscles regularly through the day. Another good stretch is to kneel on a carpeted floor with your legs and feet together and toes pointed directly back then slowly sit back onto your heels, pushing your ankles onto the floor until you feel tension in the muscles in your shin. Hold for 15 seconds then relax and repeat. When you return to sport, increase your load slowly and avoid running on hills and hard surfaces until your pain goes completely. “For the fitness of you” Linda Reilly

Big Ride 4 Parkinson’s Raises Eyebrows And Awareness Around 50 bikers rode into town for the Big Ride 4 Parkinson’s fundraising event last Saturday. Arriving at the Cambridge Hotel late afternoon, there was one notable absence though. The event’s poster boy Angry Anderson was absent due to an unfortunate double-booking. But for the dozens of bikers who came from Sydney via Mudgee, it was quite a ride. For Richmond man Rudy Heynsdyk the ride is a personal challenge. He was diagnosed with Parkinson’s in 2004. He recently lost his father to the disease, although there is only a genetic component in 1% of cases. Rudy has undergone several procedures to alleviate his symptoms and takes regular medication. He is determined to live life to the fullest. “You’ve got to do what you can when you can,” he said, “it’s such a horrible disease.” Mark Atherton is the man behind the event. He started it five years ago to combine his passion for motorbikes with a positive cause. He chose Parkinson’s as he wanted to support a disease that affects men in the later years of their lives. “Everyone really gets behind events for cancer, so I wanted to do the same for a less visible disease.” Tragically, just two years after he’d established the Big Ride, Mark’s father was
diagnosed with Parkinson’s, so it’s become a personal cause. Parkes was the obvious destination; not only does it have great alliteration, but it’s the perfect distance for a ride from Sydney. Not all riders came from Sydney. There were a few locals who joined them. Parkes woman Natalie Madsen rode to Sydney on Friday for the Big Ride. Her mother has Parkinson’s, so it’s a cause she cares about deeply. “We’ve been wanting to do this since before we got the bike,” she said. By Raen Fraser
The Big Ride 4 Parkinson’s bikers arrived at the Cambridge Hotel last Saturday after a picturesque ride through the Central West from Sydney via Mudgee. Rudy Heynsdyk (left) lives with Parkinson’s, and was determined to join the Big Ride for the fifth year.

Financial things you should know by the time you’re 30 Finances are not always straight forward. Depending on your financial personality and your personal situation, your first whiff of your own cash most likely went one of two ways: you were overcome with a sense of freedom and extravagance and blew it all in one hit, or you became Scrooge and stocked it all away. Ok, so perhaps it was somewhere in between, but you get the drift!
So how do you go about gaining financial knowledge? The simplest way is to seek professional advice. It doesn’t cost a fortune to speak to a financial adviser and to get help to put a plan in action. Over time your outlay for advice will pay for itself many times over. If you’re more of a do-it-yourselfer make sure you consult the appropriate government websites and keep up to date with financial news and changes to government policy.
What’s important to know?
1. Work to your financial personality and personal situation: To put a plan in place to suit you, you need to work it around your personal situation and personality. Some things to consider: are you a saver/a spender/a splurge/or somewhere in between? Are you single/ in a relationship/or have dependents? Do you have a mortgage or other significant debt? 2. Set yourself an achievable budget and stick to it: Keep track of your spending, start reducing your debt (HECs, credit card, car loan) and start building some savings. Easily said, but you have to plan, budget and, most importantly, stick to it! If your debt is already under control, start saving a small amount every time you get paid. Don’t forget to reassess your budget annually as well as when any significant changes occur, like a pay rise, a new job or changes to your personal circumstances.
3. Pay off debt as quickly as you can and reduce outgoings: In this consumer driven world, often the perceived solution to not having enough money is to seek a job that pays more money. Of course this is one avenue to consider, however it adds pressures like finding the right job, having a probationary period and taking on more responsibility at work. Having a good look at your outgoings and cutting spending is a great alternative (or perhaps something to do in addition) to seeking a new job
4. Salary sacrifice where possible: Depending on your employer, your type of work and other factors, you may be entitled to make repayments or pay for an appropriate purchase before your income is taxed. This makes a significant impact on your after tax dollars over time. Ask your employer or HR department about salary sacrifice options. 5. Consolidate your super: Apart from it being an administration nightmare, having multiple superannuation accounts means you’re probably not maximising your super earnings. It might seem a long time before you will retire, but it’s important to start saving towards your retirement now. Make the most of having spare cash to top up your super and, if you’re eligible, take advantage of the government’s co-contribution scheme – where the government matches your additional payments into your super account up to a certain amount.
6. Protect yourself and your money with insurance: Income Protection Insurance, Trauma Insurance and, if you have dependants, Life Insurance – all just another form of forking out for nothing in return, right? Wrong! For a small outlay each month (some premiums can be paid from your super account so you’re not out of pocket), these important insurances protect you in your time of need. Imagine becoming injured or ill and not being able to work for a period of time – months, perhaps even a year. Would you be able to keep up with the bills? Essentially, the actions you take now to set yourself up for the future, will take the pressure off down the track. Educate yourself and prepare for a better future. Mayor And Hodge Pocket Summer Competition The Parkes Mayor proved he could lead on the golf course too with his victory in the BWR Accountants and Advisors Summer Competition last Saturday. A very good field contested the 5th and final round of the Summer Competition and Ken Keith won with an impressive 42 Stableford points. In the overall competition, that saw players able to discard their worst two rounds, it was a clear 4-shot victory for the club’s most consistent golfer Jake Hodge. He returned scores of 43, 42 and 36 for 121 to finish ahead of Robert Hey with rounds of 40, 39 and 38 finished on 117 in the Stableford-based competition. Ball winners went to 40 Steve Simpson and Ian Hendry, 38 Dub Rodgers, Cathy Kelly, Chris Goodie and Col Barker, 37 Wayne Parker, Ron Hetherington, Justin
Sutton, Rod Kiley, Peter Picker and Rod Luyt, 36 David Whitfield, Michael Lynch, Jake Hodge and Reg Davison and surviving the countback on 35 was Tim Lasserre. In the Nearest the Pin, Ian Hendry dominated as he took out both the Idlerite Tyrepower 1st hole at 611cm and the tough Westlime sponsored 15th hole 551cm from the flag. The major jackpot on the Idlerite Tyrepower 1st hole was won by Mark Francis last week after it was revealed his tee shot finished just 20cm from the flag and not the reported 200cms. In other awards Ian Phipps won the Griffins Leading Edge 4th hole at 483cm, which also earned him victory in the money hole award. The Dirt Doctor Landscaping 6th saw Bob Barter victorious at 570cm and David Whitfield’s 207cm won him the
Harvey Norman 11th hole award. The final two Nearest the Pins awards on the Parkes Ready Mixed Concrete 9th hole and the PJL Groups 18th hole, saw Ron Hetherington blast his 6 iron approach shot to within birdie range of 282cm of the flag on the Par 4, 9th hole. On the short 18th hole it was Tim Lasserre who claimed the win with just 15cm off the flag. Members are reminded that effective immediately any golf ball won during Saturday competitions must be collected from the Pro Shop operated by Daniel Newton. Tomorrow’s competition is an 18-hole Stableford for the Sportspower of Parkes trophy, and on Sunday Parkes hosts the Round 4 matches of the Central West Pennants with the course closed from 7.30am to 1pm.
