WEEKLY RUNS TO SYDNEY HANDBAG LADY… Janine Hando with some of her handbags on display last Saturday. Her friend Merinda Gerter helped her set up the beautiful exhibit.

All You Need Is… Handbags

“I didn’t really set out to collect handbags – it just happened!” Janine Hando was the main exhibitor at All Things Handbags at the St George’s Hall last Saturday. The 73 bags she put on display added to a collection of miniatures by Rhonda Dunn, the Historical Society’s interesting pieces and many other bags from individuals, each with its own story. Janine said she was a keen op shopper and usually browsed the handbag section. “I like unusual bags, but there are many things that draw me to a bag. It could be the colour, a lovely handle, a nice pattern, unusual shapes or sparkles.” She has hardly ever bought a bag brand new, and her favourite every day handbag she got for $1 in an op shop in Moruya. It was made in India from

buffalo leather and has accompanied her on many trips. Norma Garment, one of the organisers of the event, dug up the handbag she got when she was 11 for the Queen’s visit in Newcastle. “When I opened it up I found three toys inside.” Other unique exhibits included a pure silver handbag from late 1890, a tiny mother of pearl bag with Chinese painting on it and a beadel bag that belonged to well-known radio personality and actor, Gwen Plumb. The Parkes Newsagency donated a leather handbag for the raffle, and put on a fashion show of its handbag collection, while ladies enjoyed scones and tea. By Maggi Barnard

QUESTION of the week markets, entertainment, food, wine and beer and many more. Visit www.bathurstwinterfestival.com.au for more information.

Uniting Church members will be making a home cooked meal for Parkes residents once a month starting 3rd July. The members are (L-R) John and Michelle Jelbart, Bev Hawken, Adrienne Bradley, Joan and Bill Paul, Evelyn Shallvey and Marie Weller.

Free Dinner: A free evening meal is being offered to the community of Parkes on the first Monday of each month, commencing Monday, 3rd July from 5.30 to 6.30 pm in the Uniting Church Hall in Court Street. The doors will be open to anyone who would like to be part of this monthly gathering. A guaranteed scrumptious home cooked nutritious meal will be prepared by the Uniting Church members and offered to residents of Parkes at no cost. All are welcome, especially families, also folks looking for company and those who have stretched budgets. Many thanks to Coles, St. George’s Pantry, Parkes Stationery and Christine’s Signwriting who have all helped to make this venture possible!

Peace Precinct: The Rotary Club of Parkes will host the re-dedication of Parkes as a Rotary Peace community by Mayor Ken Keith on Wednesday, 28th June. Parkes was declared a Rotary International Peace Community in 2012. However the site of the commemoration was deemed inappropriate, so the club has overseen the construction of a Peace Precinct that can be enjoyed by the whole community and is a worthwhile addition to the Rotary Arboretum. Rotary invites the general public to the ceremony next week at 11am. The Peace Precinct is in the park on the East Street side near the corner of Bushman Street. The club will provide tea and coffee and sausage sandwiches provided free to school children and a gold coin donation for adults.

What do you think about the skate park expansion?

Connor Hughes and Angus Mill: Connor: It’s a great idea, it’ll help stop childhood obesity. We’ve been waiting a few years for this to happen. Angus: It’s good, we need more room. Hopefully it’ll bring more people out to ride.

James Carter: I think it looks good. I thought it was going to be a little kids’ thing, but it has the potential to be great. We’ve got some pretty good people who ride here, so it’s good to accommodate them.

Winter festival: The Bathurst Winter Festival runs from 1st to 16th July featuring an ice rink and a ferris wheel and two-storey carousel for the duration of the festival, and a Brew and Bite on Saturday 8th July with Rotary President David Hughes at the Peace Precinct.

Parkes Shire Council would like to remind residents that even in the middle of winter, cutting back on water use not only saves water but also saves energy, money and the environment. To help Parkes Shire residents learn more about how they can be water wise all year round, Council has joined the Smart Water Advice website service. “These resources have been compiled by industry professionals and are an excellent place to start when looking for ways to save water in and around your home, garden and at work,” said Andrew Francis, Council’s Director Infrastructure. “Small every day actions around the home and work place add up to big water savings overall, and will go a long way to help ensure our water supply is preserved coming into the warmer months,” Andrew said. The Smart Water Advice website has a number of resources that can be used and downloaded by Council staff, businesses and residents. It can be accessed via Councils website.

My House My Home Window Myths Busted There are several myths when it comes to windows. Glassplace can help you sort the fact from the fiction. Myth: You need Council or planning permission to replace windows. Fact: Replacement of existing windows and doors does not require a planning permit, unless your home is heritage listed. Myth: Windows don’t have any effect on energy efficiency. Fact: Experts estimate that up to 70% of energy is lost through windows and doors, and 90% of this heat loss occurs through glass. Myth: Double glazed windows work best. Fact: Double glazed windows work well in hot and cold climates, however low-E glass works just as well. Also known as Pyrolytic, Smart glass™, or Comfort Plus™, it works in three ways: it reduces direct heat radiation from the sun; it reduces the hot and cold energy transfer between the inside and outside of the window; and the tinted version cuts down glare. Myth: Anyone can install windows. Fact: Not everyone can install windows correctly. Poor installation can result in leaking, drafts and difficulty opening and closing.

Hot And Spicy Snags A Winner

Book Buddy Jessica Kinsela with two Holy Family students Hudson McGuire and Declan Quade.

All Children Need One Magic Power – Being Able To Read The magic of reading books is one of life’s guarantees, and a new project in Parkes aims to help schools to impart this power to students. The Book Buddies project is looking for volunteers to spend time at any of the schools in Parkes to help students with their reading. Initiator of the project, Peter Guppy said he was motivated to do something after realising how many adults there were who could not read. “So many kids have no books at home. With this project we hope to get kids to love books and help them on their way.” The beauty of the project is that it works both ways. “There are many older people whose grandkids are far away who would love to spend time with children,” said Peter. But anyone with time on their hands are welcome to join. One of the first people to sign up was Jes-

sica Kinsela who is in her gap year. “I want to go into teaching and thought it would be a good idea to do this.” Jessica chose to volunteer at her alma mater Holy Family and has started going there every Tuesday to help out. “I think it is a very good idea and would encourage more people to do it. It is very good for our community.” According to Peter the reaction from all six schools in Parkes has been terrific. “They definitely want volunteers to come and help.” Application forms and further information are available at the library. The first step would be to apply for a working with children check, which is free for a volunteer. Contact Peter Guppy on 0448 166 016 or pbguppy@ gmail.com if you have further questions. Sarah Reeves is one of three Western NSW students to receive a Public Education Scholarship.

Scholarship Provides Encouragement For Sarah

Sarah Reeves is set to be an IT girl after winning one of 280 Public Education Foundation scholarships. The Year 11 Parkes High School student was awarded a Trades and Technology Opportunity scholarship earlier this year. Today Michelle Stanhope, CEO of the Public Education Foundation, made a special trip to Parkes to officially present Sarah with the scholarship at a school assembly. The scholarship encourages senior students to pursue a career in trades or technology, and Sarah admits she was anxious about her chances of winning it. “When I first thought about the scholarship I didn’t think I would get it because I’m a female. I had the preconception that it is a male dominated industry. In my school gender isn’t much of an issue – there are other girls who are interested in tech and maths, but I was still unsure of my chances. “So, I was actually really excited when I got it. It allows me to have extra money to help fund school requirements.” Sarah’s favourite subjects are extension maths, chemistry and physics. “I am very interested in electrical transmission of waves and how computers work,” she said. “I haven’t set one concrete ambition yet, but I know I want to work in technology. Because of the way the world is going, I want to ensure I’m equipped for the future. I’m thinking about studying IT, or finding a way that I could combine IT with education.” Sarah said that she owed a lot to the teachers who had supported her. “They’re really connected and encouraging,” she said. “I would also like to thank the Public Education Foundation.” By Raen Fraser

THE BEAUTIFUL VOICE OF AN AUSSIE LADY TANIA KERNAGHAN – ALL AUSTRALIAN GIRL Tania Kernaghan’s latest album All Australian Girl is a great country romp. Beautifully produced and lovingly presented, Tania sings her tributes to the Australian outback, her family and the Australian way of life. It is Tania’s seventh album and one that is positive, happy and uplifting and will make you feel good. I am not a big fan of the country genre, however this is an album I had no problems listening to on repeat. Tania’s singing is effortless and seductive. It is the perfect album for any afternoon adventure.

OUR Gal Marg Applebee How long have you lived in Parkes and what do you like about living here? I moved to Parkes with my parents and siblings in 1989, was away for a little while and made my way back. Parkes is big enough to have good facilities and services, but small enough to still have a country town feeling. I also love that we are close to cities and fabulous little communities. Where do you work and what do you enjoy about your work? I work for Central West Lachlan Landcare (CWLL). I enjoy meeting people who are doing their bit in their patch, not expecting rewards or promotion. I am learning every day! What do you do to unwind after work or on weekends? Spending time with family and friends, gardening, camping. What are you really good at? The term ‘really good’ is a bit of a challenge. I think that I try hard to make a difference and I do the best that I can. If you could have a super power, what would it be? After enjoying watching Wonder Woman on the long weekend, I’m pretty up on my super power knowledge. Mine would be to heal hearts and relationships. What is your pet hate? I try not to hate anything, because hate wastes your energy, hurts you and warps your perception. One dislike would be ungratefulness, particularly when we have so much to be grateful for. Tell us about your best holiday ever. I always love Tassie and always want to go back again, but growing up, we lived quite a distance from our grandparents and didn’t get to see them very often. I think visiting my grandparents dairy farm was where I learnt the most about people, relationships and gained my greatest appreciation of nature, farming and their connection.

The Block’s Ayden and Jess Hogan with Karen Creith from Furniture One and Grace and Max Dwyer Mulligan.

The Block Celebrities In Parkes Parkes had its very own Block Party at Furniture One on Saturday when a few hundred people turned up to meet celebrities from the popular TV program. “We are big fans and watched every episode with Jess and Ayden Hogan,” said 11-year-old Toby Field who came with his mum. Jess and Ayden from the Gold Coast, who were on the program two years ago, were in store to meet people. “It’s been very successful today with lots of people coming to say hi, and we even helped to sell some furniture,” said Jess. The couple said most people asked them about their experience on The Block. They said apart from being an incredible experience, it gave them a huge financial boost. They were not very keen to take part, but were convinced by Ayden’s mother to go for it with a promise she would look after their two young children. Today, apart from doing their day time jobs, they are also ambassadors for several brands which involves travelling to many different places, and they do a lot of charity events. Jess works in sales and marketing for her family’s woodturning business, and Ayden is working for a building company. They are very excited to have just about completed building their own home and hope to have moved in by the end of the year.

Regional Express passengers arriving at Parkes Regional Airport were recently met with the full suite of emergency service personnel busy with a training exercise. Forty members of the Parkes Shire Emergency Services were on deck at the airport terminal building for ‘Dusty”. The drill examined the emergency response procedures, their application and asset recovery operations relating to an incident occurring at the airport. Members of the NSW Police Service, Fire & Rescue NSW, Rural Fire Service, Parkes SES Unit, Ambulance, the Regional Emergency Management Officer and Parkes Shire Council’s Airport staff worked together in the mock crash simulation, to effectively respond to and manage the situation. With the valuable assistance from Parkes Aero Club member, Wade McConnell, the exercise was a simulation of a crop dusting plane loaded with chemicals, which had sustained damage causing the chemicals to leak. After lifting off, wind sheer affected the operation of the plane and it crashed in the vicinity of the runway. The pilot was injured within the plane and required extraction. The participants had to secure the site, command, control and co-ordinate the situation, manage the weather conditions, contain the hazardous chemicals, and treat the casualty.

Five Ways To Avoid Sea Or Tree Change Disaster The reality of a sea or tree change can be quite different from the fantasy of walking on the beach or sitting on the verandah, gazing at rolling hills. If you’re thinking about doing a sea or tree change, here are five important things to do before you start packing. 1.

Consider your needs

No matter how fit and healthy you are now, there will come a time where things like the location of medical centres and hospitals will really matter. So check the town’s facilities and their proximity to where you live. Also think about the kinds of things you like

doing — if it’s fishing and walks on the beach, a seaside town may be perfect for you. But if you or your partner enjoy restaurants, movies and cultural events, you may be bored if the only entertainment is the local pub. 2.

Think about real estate

The rustic stone cottage nestled between emerald green hills may look divine on a spring day. But how practical is it? Does it need renovating? How expensive is it to heat and keep cool? Is the area prone to bushfire or flooding? And how will you deal with snakes, rodents or ticks that could be a part of everyday life? 3.

Have a trial run

If you’ve got your heart set on a particular place, why not try before you buy? See if you can do a house swap with someone in the area of your dreams for a couple of months to get an idea of what day-to-day life is really like there. And try it more than once — during mid-summer or winter, or the wet season if it’s in the tropics. You can also mingle with the

locals and see if there is the potential to make new friends. 4.

Consider your social network

5.

Have a back-up plan

Loneliness can be a reality for retirees moving to another area, without the workplace or the children’s school to forge new friendships. So think carefully about how you’re going to make friends if you move. Finally, make sure you have the financial resources to move back if you find the sea or tree-change isn’t for you. This means factoring in the costs of getting back into the property market in a city and the likelihood of being able to sell your new home if you decide you want to go back to the fast lane. Ask the experts

A financial adviser can help you work out the financial reality of a sea or tree change. So before you make a move, you can contact us to discuss.

GOLDEN JUBILEE… The Parkes Boars 50th anniversary celebration is next weekend. This photo is from the 21st anniversary match again Forbes in 1988.

Draw For Parkes Boars And Orange City Lions

The Boars faced the City Lions in Orange last Saturday on a cold winters day and came home with a draw. Parkes shot out of the blocks in the first two minutes when Lloyd Rogers placed a ball on flying winger Dyllan Phillips who bolted 50m scoring on the wing. A turn over scrum won by Parkes again saw Rogers take the ball. This time he turned inside the pack and crossed next to the posts. He converted his own and the Boars had a 12-0 lead into the break. City came back with their big lock Joe Alexander pulling in a loose ball to cross for their first points. The conversion was missed leaving the score 12-5. Lock Israel Symington worked his way to the wing and found the ball from a wide pass through outside centre Ben Powlay. Symington’s inside pass put fly half John Rathbone on the ball and he ducked, dived and crossed wide on the wing. The conver-

sion scraped the posts but nothing added: 17-5. City bustled from a scrum on the 15m mark and finally crossed out wide. Unable to add the extras, the score was 17-10. The final 15 minutes of the match had both teams working hard. City found a gap after Parkes were down to 14 players and after repeated scrums fly half Keegan Harding crossed next to the posts. Adding the extras drew the score to 17 all. City had a golden opportunity to put the match away with a penalty goal attempt right in front on the final whistle. The ball hit the centre post and bounced back into play to keep the score a draw. Best and fairest points were awarded to: 3 points – winger Joe Nash; 2 points: prop Leo Havilli; 1 point- winger Dyllan Phillips; players player: Leo Havilli. By Cath Ryan
