WEEKLY RUNS TO SYDNEY The current Parkes Boars Rugby Union Club have a 50 year tradition of mateship to uphold.
Golden Jubilee For Parkes Boars “It’s not all about winning; it’s about turning up, and trying your best. It’s about mates and friendship.” This philosophy has seen the Parkes Boars Rugby Union Club endure through generations. The Boars celebrated their 50th Anniversary with a gala dinner at the Parkes Services Club last weekend. Mayor Ken Keith officially welcomed the 185 strong crowd, which was made up of team mates young and old, as well as partners, families and supporters. Geoff Rice emceed the event, and called on former players to share their (sometimes dubious) memories of their glory days. Special guests, former Wallaby Jon White and current Wallaby Tom Robertson helped celebrate the golden milestone. Both have a connection to the region, and an enviable
career in rugby union. Jon, who grew-up in Yeoval, agreed that country rugby punches above its weight. “There used to be pathways there for country boys,” he said, “but now country boys have to play in the cities to be seen by selectors. It really is a retrograde step.” Tom was born in Wellington, and deferred his medical studies to focus on football. “People talk about overnight success,” he said, “but they don’t see the hours and hours of training that you put into it and all of the sacrifices that you make.” The evening was a jovial celebration of the kind of mateship that the club has shared for the past 50 years, confirming that, for the Boars, it is more than just football. In the coming weeks, residents in Parkes, Peak Hill and Cookamidgera can expect their residential water supply to be briefly interrupted as contractors carry out cleaning of the water mains ahead of the commissioning of the new Water Treatment Plant. Uniting Church monthly meals: Dozens of people enjoyed a warm meal on a cold night at the first of the Uniting Churches free monthly meal nights last Monday. A dozen Uniting Church Volunteers worked in the kitchen, cooking up almost 50 meals for their local community. It was a friendly, family atmosphere, with tables full of people of all ages, from infants to the elderly. The attendees enjoyed home cooked sweet and sour mince with rice and vegetables, followed by apple crumble and ice cream. While the food was delicious, for many the company was the most enjoyable part of the meal. Steven Kirby and Cherie Capewell have only been in Parkes for five weeks, and said it was wonderful to be able to meet new people. “It’s good to bring people out of their shells,” Cherie said. “It’s made me feel warm again.”

VIP’s Work For Greener Energy At Parkes Solar Farm It was all hands on deck for last week’s solar panel installation ceremony. Mayor Ken Keith and Wiradjuri elder Robert Clegg donned hi-vis and hard hats to help install solar panels at the Parkes Solar Farm. They were joined by a handful of other VIP’s, or Very Important Panel-installers; Ian Learmonth, CEO of the Clean Energy Finance Corporation, and senior executives from the Australian Renewably Energy Agency, French renewable energy firm Neoen, and construction company Bouygues were made honorary solar panel technicians for the ceremonial event. Construction on the Parkes Solar Farm is already well-underway, with acres of piles and panels already erected. The solar farm is situated on 240 hectares of land
to the west of Parkes, and is the largest of Neoen’s four Australian solar plants. Ultimately it will be connected to the future solar farm substation, and will produce up to 80MW of renewable energy – or enough to power more than 20,000 homes. Bouyges CEO Jean-Chrisophe Perraud said that he’s excited to be part of a project that will bring the green power our planet deserves. He credited the local and international crew with the project’s successful progress. “We have the right people on the ground and are tremendously engaged with the local people,” he said. “We’re using an ambitious mix of local know-how and global skills.” By Raen Fraser

RURAL ROUNDUP Jujube Fruit The Next Big Thing For CDS Ask most people what a Jujube is and they will tell you a Jujube is a character from a Nintendo game. On a more serious note, jujube could be a big business enterprise for Currajong Disability Services as demand continues to grow for the exotic fruit, especially in the Far East and the Australian-Asian grocery industry. Over the past 12 months a dedicated team of Currajong Disability Services staff, the Currajong Autism Support Group, and numerous local volunteers have ripped, planted, irrigated and treated soil at the Akuna Road farm – all to ensure a bumper jujube crop. Despite challenges from pests such as
hares, everything is on course for a good haul that will help, in part, meet the demands of the burgeoning Asian market but also, potentially, create employment for Currajong Disability Service clients and an additional income stream. Neil Unger, CDS chairman, said the jujube fruit fetches up to $15/kg fresh. “Some like it fresh but it is also popular dry, taking on a similar consistency and taste as sticky dates,” he said. “It is another potential arm to the CDS business model that now includes paper shredding, Carob Trees and much more,” said Neil. “We are continuing to go from strength to strength.”
The Jujube need grafting and cannot just be grown. They are tolerant of salt, cold and heat being able to withstand temps as low as -50 degrees Celsius through to +50 degrees Celsius. They are extremely resilient and can be profitable. “We are hoping to expand but as you know these things take time,” said Neil. “Once this is up and running we hope and anticipate it may provide more opportunities and employment. “Again, thanks everyone for their time, effort and support,” said Neil. RURAL ROUNDUP Control Worm Larvae Worm larvae are a common issue in the cooler weather for grazing animals and can often be hard to detect. Once the larvae eggs are passed through the faeces and conditions are suitable for development, the eggs hatch to larvae and undergo two stages of growth before developing into the third stage becoming infective. If the conditions are suitable the larvae can develop in a very short period of time. A donor sheep infected with H. contortus cultured and incubated for 7 days at 25-27 degrees produced approximately 800,000 infective larvae that could potentially infect other sheep. Larvae are very resilient and can survive in low temperatures, even a frost. The larvae become a major issue as it can remain in the pastures for up to 3-7 months. Warmer and humid conditions are when the larvae are most active due to a greater demand for limited food reserves, where as in cooler temperatures the larvae is less active, consume fewer reserves and will survive longer. Unfortunately larvae can’t be seen with the naked eye on pastures hence the importance to understand the conditions at which worm eggs develop. Highly contaminated pastures are particularly unsuitable for young sheep which are at most risk of infection. Pasture contamination can also be managed with rotational crops and worm tests conducted on farm.

Weekly Market Update The season came to a close this week with the NRI finishing at 1578 cents, 20% higher than the close of the previous season, making it the highest season ending level on record. With Fremantle back on the selling roster quantities increased to nearly 37,000 bales, and with more wool to choose from, buyers became more selective with their purchases, and as a result the focus was on the best style and spec lots, leaving the lesser styles to be quickly discounted. The biggest losses occurred on the first selling day, pushing the NRI down 20 cents, while the second day saw losses but not to the extreme seen on the first day (with the NRI contracting by a further cent). Room 2 saw the skirting market move against the fleece trend, with prices generally up to 30 cents dearer. The crossbred market experienced mixed results, prices for 26-28 mic fell, while 30 mic and coarser managed to gain some ground. Next week the new season begins, quantity has increased to nearly 52,000 bales as growers looking to sell in the new financial year put their wool onto the market.
