For tennis coach Helen Magill it will be the second time to be part of such an exceptional event. She carried the Olympic Torch for the Sydney 2000 games in Parkes. “It was an amazing experience that galvanised our whole community to celebrate the Games, so hopefully the Queens Baton Relay will be an occasion just as memorable for the whole Parkes Shire.” Helen said it was a huge honour to have been asked to participate as a batonbearer. Parkes is one of eight overnight stops in NSW, and the baton will reach the town on Monday, 29th January 2018. The batonbearers will take more than a million steps collectively across Australia to bring it to its final destination at the Opening Ceremony on 4th April 2018. Each batonbearer will carry the baton for approximately 200 metres. The baton starts its Australian journey on 25th December. It will travel through every state and territory covering 40,000km. Since its launch from Buckingham Palace on 13th March, the baton has gone across Africa, the Caribbean, the Americas and Europe. It is in Malaysia currently and will visit the remaining 15 Commonwealth nations in Asia and Oceania before arriving in Australia.

Flush of Success For Parkes Project A major project of the Parkes Shire Council won a top award in Sydney last week. The Parkes Integrated Water Infrastructure Renewal Project won the Water Management category at the Local Government NSW Excellence in the Environment Awards. The awards, which were hosted by radio presenter Adam Spencer, recognise outstanding achievements by local government in managing and protecting the environment. Council’s Integrated Water Infrastructure Renewal Project represents a raft of improvements across the town’s entire water cycle with the aim to provide the region with a safe and secure water supply into the future. The project includes necessary upgrades to the town’s raw water supply infrastructure, as well as the construction of a new Water Treatment Plant and a new Sewage Treatment Plant. The final stage will involve the establishment of a Water Recycling Scheme, which will provide an additional drought proof water source for municipal irrigation. Andrew Francis, Director of Infrastructure, said the win recognised Council’s efforts to provide the residents of Parkes

and Peak Hill with best practice water and sewage services, and would support future population growth and economic development within the region. “Council strives to be a leader in sustainability,” he said, “this not only includes ensuring the security of our water supply in a changing climate, but also ensuring our infrastructure is resource and energy efficient, which is not only good for our environment, but is also cost effective.”

1 milk carton Dean Lavers from Milthorpe received a lot of attention with his 1961 VW Kombi with its signature 23 windows. It is a very rare model as only about three of them were imported to Australia. “I need a lot of time wherever I go, as everyone has a Kombi story to tell when they see mine.”

A Day To Spoil Car Lovers

The combination of the annual Show and Shine and Swap Meet last Saturday proved to be a hit with more than 1, 000 people enjoying a day out in perfect weather. Organisers of both events were very satisfied with the support of the community. “We are really pleased,” said Phil Dixon of the Swap Meet, while President of the Central West Car Club Rodney Barnes said he was very happy with their biggest event yet. The Show and Shine event with almost 200 cars on display raised $2,500 in gold coin donations for Can Assist. According to Rodney they received 169 entries vying for the 50 awards, plus additional vehicles for display. “Entries came from as far as Sydney, Dubbo, Orange, Narromine, West Wyalong, Forbes and of course Parkes. There is a bit of everything here today – Ford, Holden, Valiant, Porche, VW, Mercedes, and many more,” said Rodney.

The theme this year was Holden Monaro with 11 cars entered ranging from a 1968 GTS 327 to modern models, while the panel van category was also very popular with 12 entries. The Australian Commodore Club brought about eight entries. A special display signalling the end of an era featured a 1956 Holden FJ Ute restored by Bob Wheeler and Mark Taylor from Parkes and a SSV Commodore – the last of the Holden Utes VFII SS-V V8 Utes to roll off the production line. While next door at the Swap Meet there was a very positive vibe. “We had a great day with about 75 sellers and 1, 100 people through the gate,” said Phil Dixon. He said it was a vast improvement on last year and sellers, who came from as far as Victoria and Queensland, offered a lot of car stuff, plus all sorts of bric-a-brac too. By Maggi Barnard

A Horror Story To Crow About Having to write an original horror script of seven pages or less within 48 hours might sound like a nightmare to many, but for former Parkes Phoenix journalist Raen Fraser it was a thrill. Winning the top prize at the Tasmanian Gothic Short Script Challenge for Best Australian Script from over 100 entries transformed the challenge into pure joy. “I was thrilled to have been selected as Best Australian Script – I already felt like I’d won just by finishing,” said Raen, who works in communications at the Parkes Shire Council and also on a fantasy novel for teenagers. “I have not really done horror before, it is not my usual genre.” Raen’s winning script is titled As The Crow Flies and tells the story of a mother and daughter implicated in a mystery when they realise an injured bird holds secrets about a missing child. “The idea came up years ago when I worked for WIRES and had to deal with some aviary escapees. It turned out tame cockatoos who had escaped would teach wild birds to ‘speak’ English and you’d find talking birds out in really remote areas.” The annual competition, based in Tasma-

nia, is open to writers worldwide and encourages original horror storytelling. Hosted by Stranger With My Face International Film festival, the unique event asks participants to write a new horror script with three unique prompts: a line of dialogue, a character and an object had to be incorporated into their, inspiring idiosyncratic results. Raen said her experience as a journalist working to strict deadlines and word counts served her well in sticking to the 48-hour deadline and seven-page length. Although she has doubts that her script would ever be turned into a movie, she said the competition offered a great platform for emerging screen writers to refine their skills. “It can be really hard to get your work out there.” While writing her first horror story brought so much reward, Raen is happy to return to her fantasy novel with the hope the end result would not be all make-believe. By Maggi Barnard

It is no fantasy that local writer Raen Fraser won the top prize in a horror script challenge recently.

LEGAL Eagle

Marriage Celebrants Greg Ballantyne With the topic of marriage currently in the news, the question may arise: “How do I become a marriage celebrant?” It is not that simple... You need to become qualified and become an authorised celebrant under Part IV of the Marriage Act, 1961. Ministers of religion are registered as marriage celebrants after being nominated by their church or faith and they are able to marry persons in accordance with their church or faith throughout Australia. Chaplains in the armed services have the ability to solemnise marriages overseas where one person is in the Australian Defence Force. Registrars of births, deaths and marriages are automatically marriage celebrants by their office, and most registrars of courts in rural NSW are able to perform marriages. Most Australian diplomatic or consular officers in foreign countries are also authorised to perform marriages in those countries. Otherwise, to become a fully certified and authorised marriage celebrant, you will need to be at least 18 years of age, be of good character, attend the correct training and showcase your knowledge of marriage legislation. The training is a Certificate IV in Celebrancy which can be obtained at many registered training organisations including TAFE. After vetting by Police and paying fees, a person becomes registered as a marriage celebrant and may solemnise marriages at any place in Australia at any time subject to the act and provided the bride and groom give at least one month’s notice to the celebrant in writing of their intention to marriage. Instant marriages are not possible. If you have questions on the Marriage Law or anything else, please contact any of our solicitors at Matthews Williams.

How long have you lived in Parkes and why do you like living here? In total I’ve lived here for about 30 years. It’s a great place for kids to grow up and experience the wide-open spaces. Where do you work and what do you enjoy about your work? Parkes Christian School. I love seeing kids get interested in classic texts like Hamlet and The Great Gatsby. What do you do to unwind after work or on weekends? I have done a lot of M&D shows. I’m hoping to see the Eels win a premiership one day and I love hanging out with my family. (Greg currently plays the lead male role of Franklin Hart in 9 to 5 The Musical at the Little Theatre - Ed.) What are you really good at? Quoting Star Wars. If you could have a super power what would it be? I don’t think I’d want one. Batman is the best superhero and he has no powers. What is your pet hate? Being late. Tell us about your best holiday ever? I took my wife to London and Paris for her 30th birthday. Seeing the smile on her face when we visited some of her favourite places made it pretty special.

Greg and Hayley Ballantyne.

The Truth About Tennis Elbow Tennis elbow (lateral epicondylalgia) is a general term used to describe pain on the outside of the elbow. Ironically, most people who get tennis elbow do not play tennis and whilst pain is felt at the elbow it is a degenerative problem that involves the wrist and finger extensor muscles. Typically, those with tennis elbow will experience pain when performing gripping tasks or resisted wrist or finger extension. There will be tenderness over the bone on the outside of the elbow and the muscles of the forearm may feel very tight. Often grip strength is decreased and it is painful to grip or lift objects or to shake hands. In the not so distant past, it was thought that this was an inflammatory condition and the common advice was to rest, and take anti-inflammatories. We now know that this is a degenerative condition of the tendon where the wrist extensors attach to the lateral epicondyle of the elbow. The cause can be due to one large/strong movement or repeated movements that stress the tendon to the point where the tendon is unable to repair as quickly as damage is occurring. Initially treatment involves rest from the aggravating activities and gentle strengthening exercises to stimulate the growth of new tendon cells within the tendon. Load management is important, for example instead of painting that room in one day complete it over several days to minimise aggravation. Initially isometric exercises such as tensing your forearm muscles without moving your wrist will help relieve symptoms. These are later progressed to eccentric strengthening exercises to prevent reinjury. For the fitness of you, Linda Reilly
