City 2 Surf Team Do Us Proud Canowindra’s own City2Surf team came away from the event feeling proud and accomplished last weekend, not only in their efforts in completing the course but also in raising money for a special family on such a beautiful Sydney morning. “We have raised $31,000 in cash which is in the bank and we still have about $15,000 in pledges to come in,” said team organiser Anne Ward. “Soon we will get our DGR – deductible gift recipient status. It is hard to get but we are going through the processes and it will give us charity status.” Anne said the team put in a fantastic effort in the lead up and on the day, and everyone really enjoyed taking part in the event to help the Read Family build a fully purposed home for three wheelchairs.

“Ben is the youngest and the fastest in our team. At ten years old he finished the race in 1 hour and twenty-five minutes,” Anne said. “The slowest members of the team were Robyn Cleary and I because we had to stop for a toilet break and the line-up was twenty minutes long! We finished in three hours and nine minutes.” Two Newcastle girls, Sophie Bell and Millie Cantle, who are previous students at the Cornerstone Community also took part in the Raising a Roof team, raising $2,500 together by completing the course threelegged style. “We are absolutely overwhelmed with the support we’ve had,” Anne said. Well done to all those who participated and sponsored the team for this great cause. By Rosi Broom

To the Editor, There has been much comment recently about the non functioning of the “town” clock located outside the Canowindra Pharmacy. Early in 1996, Canowindra Lions Club paid $4300+ for the clock. The late Don Lawrence constructed and installed the pole to which it is attached, while Graeme Hamer installed the electronic control system which it is assumed, would still be located inside the pharmacy building. The re-setting of the clock should still be possible from within the pharmacy building. There is a small plaque on the pole supporting the clock which commemorates the official unveiling by the then President of Canowindra Lions Club, Dr Arcot Kumar. Unless the responsibility for the clock’s continued operation and maintenance since 1996 was assumed by Cabonne Council (the clock is located on the footpath - Council’s property), then responsibility for the clock

would still remain with Canowindra Lions Club. Yours sincerely, Bill Barwood Canowindra

Travel Update: After a fantastic month at Dundee Beach fishing and relaxing, Allan and Debbie Symons hit the road again this week, heading back down to Katherine for the night before slowly making their way down and across the Queensland border. “We will be mostly free camping all this week and after Mount Isa in Queensland, we are staying at Corella Dam for 3-4 days,” Allan wrote. “We then head over to Townsville for a week on the beach with a view of Magnetic Island.” Every year more than 35,000 people are reported missing in Australia, with around 12,5000 in NSW, equating to one person disappearing every 15 minutes and research indicates for every person who goes missing, on average at least 12 people are affected in some way. “If you have fears for the welfare of a loved one, I urge you to come forward as soon as possible,” Police Minister Tony Grant said, stressing there is no maximum time frame to wait before making a missing persons report. Correction: Apologies, it was Mr Owen McLaughlin who retired from Canowindra High School. Canowindra Road will receive an upgrade with road widening and improved drainage starting in Cudal and continuing for three kilometres south. “The project is expected to be completed in early October, weather permitting,” Member for Orange Andrew Gee said. “The work will improve the travel conditions and safety for road users. Minor delays are

expected due to lane closures, however every effort will be made to minimise impact.” Did you know that, according to Canowindra’s own Table of Wisdom, we spend one seventh of our lives on a Monday? Look out for your new Wiley’s Betta Home Living catalogue in your mailbox this week. It includes unmissable discounts on Dyson Vacuum Cleaners and washing machines! Got your Grease tickets yet? Half of the tickets for Tommy Jeffs’ production of the hit musical Grease have already sold out and they only just went on sale! Two buses are coming from Cowra and one bus is coming from Forbes. Get in now to book your seat to this popular event! Tickets are $35 per person, available from Deli Lama Monday to Friday except for Thursdays. A beautiful Italian style dinner is included! Don a Daffodil! Friday 28 August is Daffodil Day and a stall will be available outside IGA selling daffodils, soccer balls, brooches and pens to raise money for cancer research, developing cancer prevention programs and providing patient support.

Canowindra’s New Cultural Gala Ancient Fish Swims Again Canowindra, already famous for wine, cuisine and heritage is about to add an ambitious new string to its bow as a regional cultural attraction. Baroquefest is an inaugural 3-day celebration during October with music from the renowned 16th century era of classical giants. Baroquefest is the dream-come-true of Canowindra Fine Music, a volunteer committee chaired by Rosnay vigneron Richard Statham, which has been inspired by the popularity of regular visits over the past decade to Canowindra by musicians from Sydney, Mitchell and Orange Conservatoriums. “Music from the Baroque era holds a special appeal for many these days, and baroque festivals have seen huge attendances in most Australian capital cities,” Richard says. “Why should they only be held in the cities?” “Our vision is to hold a festival of fine music annually here in Canowindra,” Richard said. “We’re already planning for a festival in 2016 and have attracted the interest of the Australian Brandenberg Orchestra.” Baroquefest has attracted enthusiastic support, both from the classical music com-

munity and major funding organisations. With two months to go before the concerts, almost $20,000 has already been received in grants and donations from the Australian Arts Council, Musica Viva, Orange Regional Arts Foundation and Cabonne Council. The festival has also received the significant seal of approval from ABC Radio’s longstanding producer/presenter Marian Arnold who has agreed to be a patron of Canowindra Fine Music and will host the Baroquefest concerts. “I grew up in the Central West of NSW and in recent years I have been overjoyed to watch this region’s musical development,” Marian says, hailing the Baroque period as “what is perhaps for many of us the pinnacle of the Western harmonic tradition, and its richness and depth have been far reaching.” “My hope is that Canowindra’s enterprising new Baroquefest venture will succeed and prosper well into the future.” For ticketing information, visit www. canowindra.org.au/baroquefest By Derek Maitland

SCIENCE WEEK 2015 17th, 18th + 19th August

Everyone is invited to this world first event at 6pm on Monday 17 August at the Belubula River Swinging Bridge where the Canowindra Lions Club will be hosting a sausage sizzle. Book Benefits

Calling out to Canowindra creatives! A great new initiative is starting up in town and everyone is urged to take part. Triple C, Canowindra Creative Centre is a not-for-profit community group that was started recently to provide local people with the location, equipment and fundamental guidance needed to embark or continue on their chosen creative journey. Looking to instruct in a range of artistic fields like drawing, painting, creative writing, mosaic and leather work, the forum is open to new ideas. The Triple C want to offer a safe, casual and friendly environment where people can share and explore their creativity with companionship and a group under guidance. They hope to have locals come together and share friendships over creativity and a love of crafting. The basic art equipment needed for each class like canvas, paint, pencils and paper will be provided but attendees are welcome to bring their own supplies. Held on the first and third Wednesday of the month from 1:30-3pm, the very first Triple C event will be a scrapbooking class and will be held on Wednesday 19 August at the CWA Rooms. Anyone over 18 years old is invited. Entry is by donation. If you are creative minded but don’t know where to start, this is the perfect place. To book your place in the upcoming class or find out more information, contact Deb Rutter on 6344 2490.

Have you ever thought about joining or getting involved with a book club, or even wondered what the benefits of joining a book club might be? Getting involved with a book club can do marvellous things for the members. It opens them up to a new kind of community where they can engage with people who have similar interests; it stimulates members intellectually by giving them a place to focus and discuss new ideas, different cultures and societies and their perceptions of the world they live in; it exposes members to new types of literature and viewpoints they might never have encountered and beside all that, book club offers a break from everyday life. Jill Stone, a member of one of Canowindra’s book clubs says there are plenty of benefits to being a part of a literary group. “Just think of it! Bring together between six and ten women who have curious minds, each reading a book chosen by one of the members in the group,” Jill writes. “We get together at a suitable time, perhaps a month later, have a simple meal or snack, a glass of wine or coffee and we discuss the book in question.” “It is often surprising how each person sees something either the same of completely different to the other. From one topic develops another, sometimes not at all related to the book being discussed!” Let us know about your club at editor@ canowindraphoenix.com.au By Rosi Broom

Time!

The 2015 Canowindra Miss Showgirl competition is coming up next month giving the local ladies the opportunity to glam up for the occasion and showcase their talents. Aiming to empower young women and girls in isolated country communities, the Showgirl winner is chosen by a panel of three judges based on their confidence, personality, goals, presentation, knowledge and public speaking abilities. This long running competition has been on the Canowindra calendar since 1962 and this year the Canowindra Phoenix will again sponsor this fun and fabulous event. While it can be quite daunting to put yourself out there on this kind of platform, the Showgirl competition is a great way to come out of your shell and overcome personal barriers in public speaking and performance. The sensational winner of the competition will be announced and sashed at the Canowindra Show in September. Take the opportunity to show us who you are!

A new season is just around the corner which is an enormous relief for some; it means we can take off a few layers, get out of bed without frosting over and turf the comfort food! Spring is an inspirational time of year when the natural colours erupt all around us, flowers blossom and birds break into song for the season of growth and new beginnings. When September rolls around, it’s time to start experimenting with a new catalogue of recipes and move away from the stodgy, heavy foods we generally turn to in the cold months. One dish that comes back in vogue each spring is the humble salad; a dish that can always be fresh and diverse. You can put a twist on a Caesar Salad for example by using a peppered chicken schnitzel instead of the traditional style chicken, or add apple to a blue cheese, spinach and pasta salad for balance. Home-made pizzas are another fun and simple idea for spring that can be both light and flavoursome. It’s easy to make bases from scratch or you can use flatbreads and tortillas. Add simple and tasty toppings like capsicum, garlic mushrooms or fetta cheese and match them with fresh pineapple, roast pumpkin or avocado aioli for a fresh spring taste. The cafes and coffee shops around the Central West are embracing the seasonal shift by renewing food and drink menus. Visit some of our favourite cafes for a taste of their newest spring flavours. Café Latte is one of Orange’s best food and coffee stops – a must-do for coffee connois-

seurs visiting the city. With freshly roasted coffee from Café Firenze using the Dante blend, the coffee at Café Latte has a strong and smooth taste. The spacious and modern café offers dine-in as well as takeaway and their menu is bursting with traditional favourites, modern meals and gluten free options. This is a 70-seat venue open for breakfast, lunch, morning and afternoon tea and they can do catering for functions and events. Down the road in Orange Simply Nile has a casual alfresco dining experience that showcases delicious home-made food, local coffee and the peaceful East Orange surrounds. At Simply Nile they use fresh, local produce with friendly and efficient service that complements the quality of the food. This is a venue that can cater to functions like weddings, parties and special occasions, and they were recently the recipient of a Certificate of Excellence for 2015 from Trip Advisor. Mt Canobolas Teahouse offers a sensational menu for breakfast, lunch and dessert and is the type of setting where you can relax among the tranquillity and breathe the fresh country air. Choose from a selection of mouth-watering cakes, slices, pies and tarts, and don’t forget to check out their generous mid-week specials. Canowindra Sport did with great defence from the forward pack combined with strong attacking raids. The Tigers’ back line fired off the back of the forwards for Jake Davis to score a total of 4 tries from his 20 carries, including one from 50 metres out. It was a very good second half from the Tigers who won the day with 22-10 on the scoreboard. The Tigers travel to Eugowra on Sunday and a win there will confirm their position on the ladder with an assured spot in the semifinals. All three grades will play with kick off at 11:30am. Get out there and support your team!

RUGBY LEAGUE

The Canowindra Tigers took on Peak Hill Roosters last weekend and took an early lead with two tries in the 5th and 10th minutes. Peak Hill snuck in a try in the 15th minute to narrow the gap in the score a little bit only to see the Tigers hit back hard, taking the score to 22-6 in the Tigers’ favour. RUGBY UNION

Like the Wallabies, the Canowindra Pythons faced off against their rivals West Wyalong Weevils on the weekend in their last home game for the season. An offload by Ed Price saw Joe Keady score and Tom Roth successfully converted but West Wyalong kicked a penalty goal taking the score to 7-8. Craig McKenzie was everywhere on the field and made a lot of ground but West Wyalong scored and converted to take the score to 7-15 at half-time. After the break West Wyalong scored again and the score was 7-20, but Ed Price scored making the score 12-20. With strong tackles and good offloads from Adam Nash, the Pythons turned it around and Luke Watt scored with a conversion from Tom Roth. The score was at 19-20. With eight minutes left, Craig McKenzie scored with another conversion from Tom Roth to win the game. The competition is now over and the finals will begin this weekend with the Pythons travelling to Molong on Sunday to take on last year’s premiers.
