Welcome to Chesterfield Theatres

Pomegranate Theatre

Winding Wheel

Welcome to Chesterfield Theatres We would like to welcome you to Chesterfield Theatres – and the new Spring/Summer programme for the Pomegranate Theatre and the Winding Wheel. Highlights include the thriller THE DEVIL AT MIDNIGHT, comedy SHADY BUSINESS, and the ballet THE LITTLE MERMAID.

Looking further ahead, make sure you book your tickets for this year’s pantomime at the Pomegranate Theatre, which will be CINDERELLA, starring the queen of ballroom and Strictly Come Dancing Winner CAMILLA DALLERUP.

The Pomegranate Theatre and the Winding Wheel are owned and operated by Chesterfield Borough Council. Over the summer, we will be making a series of improvements to the Theatres, funded by Arts Council England, designed to allow us to programme a wider range of performances and events and improve the customer experience.

We hope that you will continue to support the Theatres, and we look forward to welcoming you soon.

Work will be carried out at the Winding Wheel during May to July 2014, and will include new stage and lighting, improved dressing rooms and better theatre seating in the Auditorium. At the Winding Wheel there will be no performances during this period, but once reopened, there will be a great range of entertainment, including performances from top comedian JIMMY CARR, the hit West End musical FAME, and singer SETH LAKEMAN.

Executive Member for Leisure, Culture and Tourism Chesterfield Borough Council

Work will be carried out at the Pomegranate Theatre during July to September 2014, and will include the installation of digital projection equipment for film and live performances, additional seats and a new lighting control room.

Councillor Amanda Serjeant The Pomegranate Theatre is a delightful Victorian 546-seat proscenium arch theatre with adjoining bar, housed in the Grade II-listed Stephenson Memorial Hall. The theatre presents a programme of professional touring drama, music, entertainment, and a very popular pantomime. In addition it presents a regular programme of films and is also used by a number of local amateur groups. Perfect for theatrical performances, concerts and presentations, the Pomegranate Theatre is a beautiful and historic venue in the heart of Chesterfield.

The Winding Wheel is a Grade II-listed entertainment and conference centre, built in 1923 as a cinema. It offers a diverse programme including West End musicals, comedy shows, concerts, illustrated talks and a wide range of community events. Located in the centre of Chesterfield, convenient for rail and bus links and close to car parks, it has three rooms - the main Auditorium which seats up to 930 people, the adjoining Ballroom which can hold up to 200, and the Function Room which can hold up to 100.

At the Pomegranate Theatre there will be no performances during this period, but once reopened, you can look forward to John Godber’s delightful APRIL IN PARIS, and the return of the Agatha Christie Company in BLACK COFFEE with Hercule Poirot.

Spring/Summer 2014 2 / 3

Chesterfield Borough Council is embarking on an improvement programme for the theatres, which are both historic Grade II listed buildings. The first phase of improvements is due to take place this summer and is a ÂŁ750,000 scheme funded by Arts Council England and Chesterfield Borough Council. The purpose of carrying out this work in 2014 is to enable the Theatres to deliver a wider range of events and generate additional income to support their ongoing development. Therefore the focus of the work is on the improvement of the facilities as opposed to a decorative upgrade.

The planned work includes the following projects: Improved backstage and technical facilities at the Winding Wheel To support larger scale productions we are planning to install a new stage with a new automated stage extension and lighting trussing. We also plan to increase the electrical power supply, make improvements to the back stage area and provide an additional dressing room. Improvements to the seating layout in the Winding Wheel Auditorium To improve sightlines for customers sitting in the rear of the auditorium and to enable alternative seating layouts, we are planning to install movable seating rostra. Installation of digital projection equipment in the Pomegranate Theatre To enable us to expand and develop our film programme and to enable us to show live satellite broadcasts, we are planning to install a digital film projection and sound system. Increase the seating at the Pomegranate Theatre To allow the theatre to programme a broader range of work, and to ensure we have additional seating capacity for sold out events, we are planning to increase the number of seats, and refurbish the existing seats and renew the carpeting in the Stalls of the Pomegranate Theatre. Improve the technical facilities at the Pomegranate Theatre We are planning to install a new lighting and sound control room at the rear of the Stalls, and an audio description room to enable us to offer audio description for plays.

Close your eyes and you won’t believe your ears, open your eyes and you won’t believe them either! Featuring Your Song, Candle in the Wind, Don’t Let The Sun Go Down On Me, Sacrifice, Crocodile Rock, I’m Still Standing, Saturday Night’s Alright For Fighting and many more. A fabulous night of freestyle dancing to a range of music. From past and present chart music, disco to blues and swing to Latin. Music for everyone of every age. This event is based in the Winding Wheel Auditorium which has an impressive dance floor. The bar will be open.

Open auditions are being held by ABD Productions for talented youngsters, aged between 8-21, for lead and ensemble roles to join the professional cast in Anne Dalton’s hit musical Her Benny which will be at the Pomegranate Theatre from 31 October to 2 November 2014. This exciting opportunity is offered to good all-round performers. This busy show has multiple roles and needs applicants who, apart from being talented, are committed, enthusiastic and able to take direction.

Craig Murray Straight from the hugely successful Plusnet TV adverts, no nonsense northerner Craig has been described by Jo Brand as “really, really funny” and by bbc.co.uk as "a downright hilarious performer with reams of brilliant material".
