otpora u logoru Auschwitz. E The new harvest of films yielded very mature, engaging, and compelling films, and we proudly present sixteen powerful documentaries in this year’s competition. The films reflect, comment, and give the viewer food for thought that may well, in the long run, bring about positive change. Two Bosnians, Oscar winning director Danis Tanovic and Pulitzer Prize winning photographer and cinematographer Damir Sagolj just finished a short, compelling film that calls for urgent action. In their film WHEN WE WERE THEM, they depict the horrible reality of migrants stuck in Bosnia and Herzegovina on their way to Western Europe. The remarkable film essay DISTURBED EARTH by Kumjana Novakova and Guillermo Carerras Candi is a sophisticated author’s take on dealing with the collective pain of people’s soul, mind, and soil. This warns us that the tragedy of Srebrenica genocide is reality of all of us. Our opening film, the brilliant cinéma verité FACTORY TO THE WORKERS by Srdjan Kovacevic from Croatia, meticulously observes and questions the dream of workers to keep their factory in their hands and withstand capitalism. A burning topic especially in the post-socialist part of Europe! Another observational, captivating and somewhat humorous film is Sunny by Keti Machavariani from Georgia. She skilfully focuses on the calm, sympathetic interviewer that conducts an official research on acute political and civic issues. We observe what Georgians think about politics, patriotism, religious freedom, and nationalism. Another socially relevant and burning topic is explored in RECIPE FOR HATE by Filip Colovic from Serbia; it deals with violence among various groups of young hooligans. It is a deeply disturbing, even shocking, and thought-provoking film that observes the process of creating and spreading hate in society. The film is initiated by the personal case of lethal violence against the filmmaker’s brother. RECONCILLIATION, the Slovenian debut by Marija Zidar, takes us to Albania to re-visit and re-think,
with great insight and sensibility, options for solving the pressing issues of the infamous blood feud present in that territory for centuries. Ahmet Necdet Cupur from Turkey films his own family in the impressive LES ENFANTS TERRIBLE and reveals the harsh reality of a family where adolescent children, especially female, are under enormous pressure from the family and community. A dramatic narrative in a well-structured and visually stunning film. Another thought-provoking film comes from a country with a very small production capacity – Cyprus. EVERY SUNDAY, directed by Keti Papadema, follows the harsh reality of Filipino women who are nursing most of the elderly and sick Cypriots. On this small island, a serial killer starts murdering migrant females. SOLDAT AHMET by Jannis Lenz depicts a slice of life of a professional Austrian soldier with Turkish roots who is also a boxing champion. Yet Ahmet’s dream is to become an actor. On stage, he comes face to face with himself and confronts his own demons. DIVAS, the captivating debut by the talented Mate Korosi from Hungary focuses on the life of three engaging girls who attend a special secondary school for those who missed the regular education. The director lucidly, and appropriately concerning the narrative, uses the language of social media and animation, positioning himself as a side-character in the film. The cinematically exciting LANDSCAPES OF RESISTANCE is a poetic and philosophical take by Marta Popivoda on the incredible past of a remarkable 97-year-old woman from Serbia who was an antifascist fighter and the leader of the Resistance movement in Auschwitz. This compelling, visually refined, and lucidly conceptualized film recalls the time of the past but also questions Europe today. The essayistic and intimate LOOKING FOR HORSES by Bosnian-Dutch Stefan Pavlovic, deals with the search of the filmmaker’s own identity while focusing on a deaf and lonely fisherman Zdravko from Herzegovina. With charm and playfulness, this cerebral and poetic film explores the line between staging and observing. Among eight world premieres, there is a remarkable short film, THE SAME DREAM by Vlad Petri from Romania, that re-examines, in an exciting cinematic manner, moments in life of a Romanian soldier and of an Afghan girl. Juxtaposing images of war with shots of everyday life, the film takes us back and forth from Afghanistan to Romania. Another short cinematic gem is HORIZON by visual artist Tanja Deman from Croatia. She sets the incredible, surreal beauty of the Adriatic Sea against ecological disaster, posing relevant questions. BOSNIAN BROADWAY by Jasmina Besirevic, brings to the surface hopes and dreams of a young generation of actors. What chances they have at home, or should they all have the same dream – to leave their homeland for good? ŽŽŽ (JOURNAL ABOUT ŽELIMIR ŽILNIK), made by the experienced documentarian Janko Baljak from Serbia, re-examines the extremely potent, creative world of the well-known and at the time rebellious author Zilnik, who was the moving force of the Yugoslavian Black Wave movement. Zilnik is still one of the most inspirational, hardworking cineastes and thinkers of our region. Our traditional Docu Press Corner at the Festival Square will again be a hot spot for encounters between film makers and journalists, curious spectators and human rights activists. Welcome!
