HOW TO DRAW A CROISSANT? 10.8 cm

In this module, we were tasked with photographing, measuring and drawing a croissant using multiple techniques like hatching and shading. A mixture of photographing as well as scanning was use to get accurate measurements and proportions of the croissant. In this module I learnt how to set up a photostage, how to adjust and use ligthing and accurately photograph objects. I found hatching quite difficult as it was the first time that I was trying it out, and I was unsure of what to do, hence the result did not resemble hatching as much as would have liked it to. Shading came much easier to me as I had used the technique in the past and I was more familiar with it. However, I also did learn how to utilise different pencil weights to create different shading effects.

The biggest thing I learnt from this module are the multiple photo cleaning and editing skills

MODULE 2 FLATNESS VS PROJECTION

08

NEW MARIO WORLD In this module, we were given 2 different images from a Mario World, and had to project these flat 2D images and turn them into 3 dimensional landscapes. I quite enjoyed creatively envisioning how to lay out my landscape and what elements to include in the middle of the two given landscapes. Some skills I learnt was how to create and manually draw an axonometric projection of a landscape. I also learnt how to use Adobe Illsutrator, however, I encounted many problems with the program, and a lot elements and details that I had created in my axonometric disappeared, which was quite frustrating. It was my first time using Illustrator as well, and I was largely confused on how to place down certain elements but I did eventually figure it out. Overall I found this module very challenging but I also learnt a lot from it.

MODULE 3 PATTERN VS SURFACE

THE MAKING OF A NEW LANDSCAPE In this module, I learnt how to use the software Rhino, how to make something undevelopable into something developable, and how to create something digitally to make something corporeal and 3 dimensional in real life. I also leanrt how to create my own 3 dimensional prism like structures and how to impose them onto a grid to create a terrain form. I did have some struggles with some of the shapes not actually unrolling equally, which I didn’t realise until I had printed them out and stuck them together. I did quite enjoy manually creating the actual paper terrain itself.

MODULE 4 FRAME VS FIELD

INVISIBLE CITY: CITY AND NAMES LEANDRA For this module, I further learnt how to use Rhino as well as Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop. The text that I was given was of the city Leandra. It described of two different species, and my interpretation of the two species were that they were representations of two different but main aspects often found in cities. The species of Lares represents the structure and landscape of a city, and the Penates represent the spirit and souls of the people that inhabit cities.

16

Perspective one. This scene shows the perspecive of Lares, where the structure and the environment are the main focus, and the people fade to the background. I did include one character in order to show that although the two ‘species’ are different, they still interact with one another in order to create the city.

17

Perspective Two. This scene focusses on the perspective of the Penates. In this scene, there are many more characters, and the scene is livelier, as it depicts the people who interact with one another. The structure of the building is less prominent, however, it is still present to further show the relationship between the surroundings and the people.

REFLECTION This subject overall gave me a good overview of what is required in the design world. As someone coming into the Bachelor of Design with limited knowledge of design principles and a more visual art mindset, I found that this subject conveyed what was expected of me in my future endeavors in architecture and design. I gained a few skill sets, but the most prominent one was the skills to use the four main softwares required in this module: Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign and Rhino, which I anticipate that I will rely on heavily in the future, in both my course, work and daily life. I also learned a few design techniques such as axonometric projection, creating developable and solid models and how to begin envisioning a representation of an idea. I feel like most of my modules could have been vastly improved. My main issue throughout the duration of the subject was time management, which was also in part due to me being unfamiliar with the programs and techniques used, and I did not anticipate how long it would take for me to get the hang of certain techniques and to learn new skills. It also took me longer than usual to fully grasp what was required of me for each module, and I found that my understanding of a module often came to me later, which was usually close to when the module was due.
