WEEK 9 READING: PERSPECTIVE AS SYMBOLIC FORM

Question 1: What are Durer’s rules for perspectival projection? (Maximum 100 words) Durer overall had three rules on perspectival projection: Rule one: Orthagonals or perpendiculars meet at a central vanishing point which is determined by how the perpendicular projection is drawn from the ye of the picture plane Rule two: Any parallel regardless of their direction have a common vanishing point. For example, if they are horizontal to the picture plane then their vanishing point will lie on the horizon. Rule three: Objects and shapes of equal dimensions progressively diminish as they recede in space. This means that any portion can be calculated from the preceding or following portion

Question 2: Describe homogenous space? (Maximum 100 words)

Homogenous space is described as rational, functional, purely mathematical and infinte. Points exist within the space and have no real purpose without meaning.

QUAD PERSPECTIVE 1 + 2 Perspective one. This is in one of the outermost thirds of the old quad to show the structure and the outdoors

Perspective 2. This is within the other 2/3rds of the old quad, with the scene being situated on the inside

6

PERSPECTIVE SCENE 1 + 2

Perspective 1 fits in with the focus on the species “Lares” as described in the story of Leandra. This chooses to focus more on the structure and architecture of the outside rather than on the people. However I did add figures in order to portray the relationship that the surroundings have with people

Perspective 2 fits in with the focus on the other species “Penates”. This is the opposite of the perspective 1 as it focusses more on the people rather than the structure, however, once again the structure is still present to show the relationship between the two

WEEK 10 READING: MAPPING THE UNMAPPABLE

Question 1: IWhat is the difference between autographic and allographic practice? (Maximum 100 words) According to philosipher Nelson Goodman, autographic practices are dependant on their authenticity on direct contact with the author, they are often the original works. There is a direct interpretation of the original creator’s ideas. Allographic practices however can exist in many copies and can be reproduced without direct contact with the original author, and relies on notation. They are often produced by other creators and are their individual personal interpretations of the original work.

Question 2: Why do architects need new representational techniques? (Maximum 100 words) Architecture evolves as the modern world changes and grows. Because of this, other messages and contexts need to be conveyed other than just depicting structures of buildings. New techniques in the modern world need to be embraced in architecture in order to show and describe all the details that align with the real world such as time, different perspectives and scales.
