STUDIO 1

Designing a new department for NYU, I chose the school of photography and graphic design. The use of pixels and the importance of composition was the main concept for the design. I tried to incorporate the visual characteristics and the multifunctionality of pixels into the furniture I designed and the artwork I chose to place on the walls. I created pieces that can be used in more than one way, similar to pixels, to cater to an even bigger application. In order to support the concept of composition, I based the layout of the rooms on the grid. The walls and furniture are assembled in grid patterns; even the wiring of the mesh panels are intertwined like grids. The program included restaurant, library, office, classrooms, studios, lobbies, galleries and a roof terrace. The goal of the design is similar to the goal of a graphic layout, to provide an attractive and comprehensible environment for learning.

The objective was to come up with an alternative design for the IAB Bookshop, which was present during the Engage Dhaka International Architecture Conference in 2015. The main purpose was to redesign a temporary bookshop that would better facilitate the visitors and guests of that conference. The design for this bookshop is based on the deconstruction and modification of rectangular strips, where each strip has been bent in different ways to be used for a specific function, such as; a shelf, bench, counter, table and even a light fixture.

STUDIO 5

STUDIO PROFESSOR Shaila Joarder Using ship containers as the main element, the project was to design a craft center that would cater to the locals as a place for both learning and recreation. The institute mainly focuses on origami and paper cutting. Each container serves a different purpose. Some of the containers hold workshops, classrooms and food courts/canteens, while other containers hold the lobby, admin office and storage spaces. Two pairs of containers are merged together diagonally, and create an interesting space that is used as exhibition and display areas. Visitors circulate through these spaces by walking up and down stairs while viewing the artwork that is displayed on the walls. This makes for an an interesting experience and brings in a playful vibe into monotonous ship containers.

STUDIO 6

STUDIO PROFESSOR Ismat Hossain The design of this museum and memorial consists of an irregular shaped form that follows the contours of the site. The aim was to achieve a feeling of depth and connectivity to the surroundings. It was meant for it to look like it belonged there, just like the nine martyrs, for whom this was designed in memory of. The faceted and angled skylight acts as the monument. The nine faces of the skylight represent the nine martyrs. The whole building is submerged into the land and the skylight lets down light to the floor underneath (the museum) to denote that the martyrs will always shed their light towards the depth of this country. The open public roof plaza represents freedom. The concept of phenomenology was followed throughout the entirety of the design.

STUDIO Interior Design

The residence is a one unit with two floors. There are 3 beds, 2 baths, 1 toilet, living, family living, dining, a gym and 2 balconies. A double height space is the main highlight of the design. A common theme of off white and grey colors and wooden accents were followed throughout the whole design. The warm lighting is there to complement the materials in the house. The whole design was carried out through Revit.

REVITALIZATION OF

BURIGANGA JOTI RIVER LEVEL

STUDIO 10 URBAN DESIGN (GROUP WORK)

STUDIO PROFESSORS Shaila Joarder & Sujaul Khan The Buriganga river has been in a terrible state for a very long time. Kamrangirchar is an area, that used to be an island, connected to the Buriganga river. This island was defined by the Buriganga and a branch of it. This branch of the river is known as the Joti river. The Joti river has been so heavily polluted and dumped with waste that it has become a victim of encroachment to the point where the river is disappearing. Illegally placed factories and slum dwellers are taking up the life of the river. The main motive of this project is revitalizing the flow of the Joti river. The project approach is to bring about an overall improvement in the environment, the economy and the social community by introducing parks, agricultural fields, artificial wetlands and various activities and amenities. These activities include water taxis, environmental awareness centers, bamboo workshops, daycare centers, fishing, floating farms and markets for locals and tourists alike. Considering the effect of the monsoon season, all the activities will adjust according to the wet and dry seasons. Some existing elements such as main roads, bus stops and docks were kept where they were originally but were improved through design and functionality. This proposal aims to positively transform the economy, the community and the physical conditions of the river.

BANGLADESH

NATURAL HISTORY MUSEUM LEVEL

STUDIO PROFESSORS Shanjida Shamma & Muzaffaruddin Chowdhury

STUDIO Thesis I designed the Bangladesh Natural History Museum by mitigating the stereotypical idea of natural history museums and changing it into a place for people to prepare for the future with the help of the past. My concept was to follow the process of preservation and conservation. I did this by keeping all the existing trees on the site and designed the museum around it, as well as adding more trees. Visitors can enjoy this green space by walking along the designed pathways. Just in case there is rain, visitors can take shelter underneath the shading devices I designed. The shading devices were inspired by the trees on the site and were made to purposely blend in with the surrounding. The museum consists of four permanent galleries; Geology, Botany, Zoology, and the Anthropology gallery. I designed the museum route according to the journey of time and development of nature by creating a loop that starts and finishes in the same space. The loop starts from the Geology gallery and ends at the Anthropology gallery (from earth to man). I wanted to reinvent the common perception of “dusty” and “old” exhibits at natural history museums and introduce interactive exhibits to make the galleries interesting and engaging to help people learn better by introducing a special feature in each gallery. The physical design for the museum is unconventional in the term that it is simple and box-like to pay more attention to the outside and create meaningful experiences on the inside. My main objective was to appreciate the existing natural environment through my design and by entertaining people as well as educating people and involving them with the natural history of Bangladesh. BUILDING FORM DEVELOPMENT

The visitor will start from the geology gallery, learn about the earth’s formation and the rocks, minerals and fossils that have contributed to it and then move on to the Botany gallery to learn about the evolution of plant species. Thirdly, they will go on to the Zoology gallery and experience the presence of different types of animals, both extinct and existing. And lastly, the journey will end with the Anthropology gallery, where people will learn about the evolution of mankind and our culture. The Zoology and Anthropology gallery are connected to each other with a bridge. The purpose of this bridge is for people to take in the views of the river on one side and the green on the other and help them appreciate nature before they step into the anthropology gallery and understand how mankind has impacted the earth for better and for worse.

N

The zoology gallery has a connection with the taxidermy lab where people visiting the gallery can view the work being done there so that people understand the artistic value that goes behind taxidermy before they start the journey in this gallery for them to understand the displays better. For the fish and amphibian exhibits, which is part of the zoology gallery, I designed a transparent glass floor which is right above the water body so that people feel like they are part of the aquatic environment as they view the displays. There is also a glass floor in the geology gallery that has displays of fossils and rocks underneath it where people can walk over them. There are also 5 specialized research labs in the museum (taxidermy lab, geology lab, botany lab, specimen lab and chemical preservation lab), a planetarium, space gallery, cafĂŠ, a library, an admin, a multifunctional space, and an open gallery that will mostly host exhibitions on climate change.
