Poetic Attempts 15 June 2015, Vilnius

Introduction •

• •

The main aim of this poetic attempt is to assess the sustainability and usability of the LeaCoMM groups. The idea of the exploited subject of the group was taken from a European Grundtvig project implemented by Desmos NGO, called “Never Too Late for European Synergy” whose main objective was to develop the language skills in English to his target group: Migrants and vulnerable social groups. We developed a lesson plan according the needs of the same target group but we used English instead Greek between our conversation just only for showing the procedure we followed. We gave some simple theoretical lessons about Poetry and some guidelines for creating simple but real poems. We hope you will enjoy our poetic attempt!

Learning Activity •

Ideas : • My ideas e.g. Poems are usually written in separate lines organized as stanzas instead of paragraphs • the are different styles of poems, from the simple free verse poems to the most complicated ! • I can add some like acrostic poems, Haiku, Limerick, theme poems etc. Here I add the link with the products of our learners. • http://issuu.com/sarges16/docs/poems _and_styles • Greece had and still has a big past on writing poems. Many of the Greek poets were honored with the Nobel price

Learning Activity 2 •

Read texts (a) and (b) below. Discuss in what ways they are similar/different.

(a) See you at 6pm by the clock at the Tour Blanche in Thessaloniki. (b) I really hope you’ll be there. At 6, by the clock at Tour Blanche

Answers : • The first (a) is more gentile ! more words written with courteous manner. the second (b) is short and bluntness •

I have the same opinion. It’s the way of communication nowadays ! quick answers with strict meanings

Learning Activity 3 •

For an ordinary meal you may just use a plastic bowl and cutlery but for a special one you get out the best bowls and put a flower on the table. When we want words to be special we decorate them in a poetic way; we pay attention to the sounds and enjoy the language. We can do this to express emotions like love, or to give pleasure to someone (e.g. a birthday greeting), or to make our message more attractive. When we add music the poem becomes a song. • Read the message below: Let’s go shopping in the central commercial street on Sunday morning. Come and join me in the tavern.

Try to re-write it as a little poem. You might like to include some of the following in your poem: • who you are and to whom you are writing (e.g. dad and daughter; best friends) • why would you like to meet him/her (e.g. birthday celebration) • whether there is anything special about the gathering (e.g. a reunion after a long vacation) • how you could make the message more special (e.g. using rhymes, images)!!!!!!!!! •

1st attempt Invitation for shopping My dear friend, let’s go shopping! It’s your birthday tomorrow and I’m happy ! Let’s walk together on the streets and have fun! join me in the tavern and be happy! let’s go shopping!

Learning Activity 5 Images / terminology • Poetry decorates language. One way it does this is with images. There are three main types: • General images – e.g. spring can make one think of being young; autumn can make one think of old age • Metaphors – e.g. you are the sunshine in my life; he is the king of basketball • Similes – e.g. as sweet as honey; run like the wind

• • •

the river flows without end the grey days are gone… a see the storm in your eyes shiny like the sun. Glossy like a diamond

• • • •

the time is running fast each day of our lives hard his words, of stone .. you are the hell and the heaven together loyal and committed as a dog
