Association News

From the SHA Office

Marilyn Charlton, General Manager

Happy New Year! From the Saskatchewan Hereford Association, we wish you and yours all the best in 2017. The National Hereford Show held during Canadian Western Agribition proved again to be a huge success thanks to the exhibitors, sponsors and volunteers. Check out page 25 for a list of the volunteers and sponsors. New last year at Agribition, was the ability to use half of the new International Trade Centre for cattle, horses and sheep which meant the show could accommodate more than 2,000 head after the demolition of older barns. Construction should be complete for next year's show where the International Business Centre will move to the mezzanine area and the show ring to move from Exhibition Stadium. The stadium was to be demolished last year but was left standing and is now slated to go down in the spring. Livestock sales were strong and the top seller was a twothirds interest in a Hereford bull calf from Haroldson's Polled Herefords of Wawota, Sk., selling for $70,000 to Medonte Highlands Polled Herefords and NCX Polled Herefords. Presentations were made during the Hereford show. Joe Vey Jr. was presented with his 50 year membership pin from the Canadian Hereford Association and Harold Henderson was presented a gate sign from the Southeast Hereford Zone in recognition of receiving the Sask Commercial Cattleman of the Year. Stephen Scott, CHA Executive Director presented Daryl Kirton with his Past President jacket. From all of the breeders in Saskatchewan, we would like to thank Daryl for the time and dedication he has given to the Hereford breed as President of the CHA over the past two years. In 2002, instituted by a motion of the Canadian Western Agribition Board of Directors, was an award called the Canadian Western Agribition Builder Award. In 2003, the award was renamed in honor of Canadian Western Agribition's first President Chris Sutter. The Chris Sutter Award is awarded to individuals or companies that demonstrate exemplary contribution to the development of Canadian Western Agribition. The recipient last year was the late Thomas Lees. Tom's involvement with Agribition began with its inception. In 1971 Tom, Chris Sutter and Jim Lewthwaite had a dream of an international agricultural show highlighting the cattle industry. What began as an Cattle Call - February 2017 Cattle Call – February 2017

idea in February 1971 was in fact reality by the first week of December that same year. Tom Lees was a Director from the beginning and at the time of his death he held the position of Vice President and would have most likely become President in 1975. Presenting the award to his sons Duncan and Chris Lees was CWA Past President Reed Andrew.

Special thank you to the Saskatchewan Juniors Jordan Dorrance, Morgan Heidecker, Dustin McKim and adult advisor Karen McKim for their assistance with class presentations during the National Hereford show. For more information on the juniors or how you can become involved contact Karen McKim at rbdranch@live.ca. Our best wishes to Brad Dubeau as he leaves the Canadian Hereford Association to tackle new challenges with the Alberta Beef Producers. Thank you Brad for all the time and effort you dedicated to developing the Digest and for your support of the Hereford breed and its members. Until next time.

SHA President’s Report - Stephen Myer

Another year is in the books! Happy New Year to everyone near and far. The Christmas/New Year’s Holiday break is always interesting at our house as there are three little ones to watch. Of course our children each received the gift that keeps giving on their first Christmas’, a Hereford heifer! Many exciting things have happened in the breed since the last Cattle Call and we are into another exciting bull sale season. The fall sales run saw things level off slightly from recent history, but the best cattle sold very well from all accounts and averages in the sales reports are certainly respectable and profitable. There were many unique opportunities this fall with strong sets of dispersal cattle and consigners stepping up and acknowledging that quality always sells. The largest Hereford show in Canada happens annually in Regina at Canadian Western Agribition. The Saskatchewan Hereford Association is very much involved with the organization of this show and a huge “Thank You” goes out to all volunteers, staff, participants, and attendees that make the show great. Congratulations to the 2016 Champions: Hirsche Herefords, Triple A Herefords, Harvie Ranching, and Glenlees Farm. More details on the show in this issue, as well as information on other Hereford events at Agribition. There are many opportunities to buy Hereford bulls and genetics coming with the bull/production sales coming up across Saskatchewan February through April. The Hereford breed has come a long way since it lost its vibrancy of the seventies. The Hereford cattle that are available now are not the same as the ones people turned away from decades ago. Along with the constant breed character traits such as efficiency, docility, and fertility, Hereford breeders have selected for animals with superior longevity, improved growth, tidier udders, and increased vigour. I encourage cattlemen to give Hereford a try. Whether it is putting in your first Hereford bulls since Grandpa had them, or trying a performance Hereford bull on a group of cows in addition to your Hereford heifer bulls. The Hereford bulls are out there for you to meet your breeding goals. I encourage breeders selling genetics to present our Hereford breed as classy as possible. This may mean hiring professionals to clip and picture cattle, design your catalogue, and help with your marketing plans. The extra effort will be rewarded. Also, remember to follow the Canadian Hereford Association Breeder Guarantee and follow up with buyers to adjust and create breeding goals to their demands. There are genetic and management factors to consider and one without the other just won’t work. Best of luck to all the sellers and buyers this spring! I look forward to serving the Saskatchewan Hereford breeders in 2017. Enjoy this edition of Cattle Call. Cattle Call - February 2017 Cattle Call – February 2017

Saskatchewan Hereford Association

“Herefords and Hauling” Harold Henderson Named Saskatchewanʼs 2016 Commercial Producer of the Year

‘Keep it simple’ is Harold Henderson’s mantra and it has provided the framework for a successful cattle operation which was recently recognized as the Saskatchewan Hereford Association’s 2016 Commercial Cattleman of the Year. “There isn’t anything simpler than an old Hereford cow,” says Henderson. Breed them to have any colour calf that you want, he says and they are easy to work with to-boot. This Redvers area producer has deep roots in southeast Saskatchewan. His grandfather established Hillview Farms north of Carlyle and his parents established JKH Polled Herefords at Carrievale. Harold credits his parents for getting him started in the cattle business, remembering that they gifted him with a heifer – “42E” - for helping around the farm. Participation in the Carrievale 4-H Beef Club followed, from age 11 to 18. Harold recalls winning Reserve Champion Heifer honours at the regional 4-H show but says that back then, there was a greater emphasis on show steers, including pens of five steers. Like many young men, Harold tried a stint in the oil patch and one winter in B.C. was enough for him. He headed back to Saskatchewan and started working in the local grain elevator in the fall of 1979. A year later, he was managing the Stoughton Elevator.

In 1982, Harold married Della Dangstorp and the couple had three sons - Dylan, Chris and Logan. In 1986, the couple rented some grain land and returned to the Redvers area to farm with Della’s father and brother. Harold’s heart was just not in grain farming, so he ended up buying a “semi” and started hauling for Hutton Livestock. He enjoyed hauling cattle and grain. Harold and Della ended up buying the company in 1990. Harold’s love of the cattle business eventually led him to buy 10 Polled Hereford heifers in 1995 - a hobby herd that he hoped would help him stay closer to home. The heifers were purchased from the Southeast Sale at Arcola and from Whitewood. More heifers followed the next year and the “hobby” farm expanded. The heifers were custom fed in the winter and grazed in the summer on pastureland that Harold and Della had acquired. BSE proved the turning point from hobby farm to a serious cattle enterprise. Keeping heifers back and purchasing more females, Harold found that he started getting too many cows to continue calling his herd a hobby. Breeding mostly Hereford females to Black Angus bulls, Harold established a cross breeding program that continues to work for him today. Currently sitting at 140 cows, the Henderson herd is roughly half Hereford and half Black Angus and most of the black cows have Hereford somewhere in their lineage. Harold runs 9 bulls and is breeding 33 heifers in 2016, half of which are already sold. The operation consists of 1,400 acres of pasture and hay land. All grain is purchased. The rest of the operation includes four horses, a lot of barn cats and what Harold calls a “continuation steer”. The steer, a former 4-H project of Logan’s is now 5 years old and a favourite of Della’s that found his way back home after a 4-H sale. She was so sad, she didn’t even watch the sale so Harold bought it back for her at $1,200 and it now runs with the yearling heifers, providing calm guidance and leadership

Cattle Cattle Call Call -–February February2017 2017

when the chop pail comes out! Nine walking bulls are turned out June 6 th and are pulled August 6th. Calving begins in mid-March. This number of bulls ensures that cows get pregnant and the calving period remains tight. “Last year we had 76 per cent calve in the first go round,” says Harold. That number dropped to 68 percent in 2016, but it is a number that is always monitored and controlled as much as possible. Calving needs to be wrapped up inside a tight window of time so that Harold can start hauling cattle to pasture for local clients. A shorter calving season also plays into his marketing strategy for the calves. On grass with the cows, calves are weaned by the end of November using nose clips that prevent nursing. Calves are then be backgrounded until early February and sold at the auction market at Alameda, Saskatchewan. Henderson is not a fan of pre-sort sales. He wants to see his calves in a package so he can compare his breeding program with others. “In Alameda, they say whose cattle they are when they come into the ring so you better have a little pride in your program,” he emphasizes. The aim is to have 35 or more steers in a package. “My red steers actually outweighed my blacks by 20 pounds and I got a quarter of a cent per pound more for the red hided steers than the blacks,” says Harold. Harold did consider adding some continental genetics to his breeding program. “I was going to go exotic, looking for a little more frame. Then I talked to a cattle buyer who asked me what was wrong with the cheque I got that day. That’s when I went out and bought a couple more Hereford bulls.” Weaning time is over before Canadian Western Agribition. Harold tries to get up to the show for a few days every year.

He likes to keep tabs on what the purebred industry is up to. It also reinforces his decision to purchase females and bulls from the many polled breeders from his corner of the province. “I go to Agribition and watch the show and the guys from southeast Saskatchewan are right up there winning classes and some have champions. Pretty well all [my] animals have been bought from all these guys in the southeast.” Harold also keeps up-to-date on Hereford business by reading the Canadian Hereford Digest in his spare time. He recalls hauling some cattle to an Ontario Hereford breeder and surprising him by pulling out a dog-eared copy of the magazine from his truck, to show him his preferred reading material! Keeping things simple in the Henderson program calls for Polled Herefords and strategic bull selection for calving ease. For Harold, that means no bulls with birthweights over 90 pounds and even lighter birthweights for bulls used on heifers. “Once they come out and start growing, I can make money,” he says. “If they come out with a big calf lying dead, I can’t make any money!” Typically, bull shopping, for Harold, involves studying EPDs and performance information in catalogues before he heads in to the sale pens. “EPDs are a good thing but I still like to look at the animal,” he says. Harold turns yearling bulls out with about 15 cows. Older bulls are turned out with 20 cows. When the bulls are pulled in August, they are all turned out on a pasture one mile south of Redvers where they can get back in shape for the next breeding season. Cow size is between 1,200 and 1,400 pounds, which is

where Harold would like to keep it. He believes in a strict culling process to rid his herd of problems and doesn’t run a bull in his cull cow pasture. Pairs are sorted and hauled out in a liner in the spring. “It’s one heck of a day to get 140 pairs moved,” he says, adding, “The wife and I don’t usually bond too good the next day.” On sorting and hauling days, Della and their son Logan and a couple other guys help out. Help has been limited in the southeast corner of Saskatchewan, with the oil field as a major competitor for labour. Their youngest son Logan is interested in the cow business and Harold is very supportive of his growing involvement. Logan moved to the cattle yard on the west end of Redvers where the Hendersons calve their cows. Harold says he is being the “banker” as Logan builds his own herd while also working in the oil patch. Harold recognizes the need to encourage more young people to become involved in agriculture. He believes in giving them a break when it comes to selling them females and has also been a long-time supporter of local 4-H sales. He has supported young Saskatchewan Hereford breeders and Junior Hereford Association members by hauling their cattle to Bonanzas in Camrose, Alberta and Salmon Arm, British Columbia. Developing a problem-free, low maintenance cowherd has enabled Harold to continue trucking in the spring and fall and to fit in another job sourcing canola for a crushing plant in North Dakota. These outside jobs mean that his cows may get checked just once a week in the summer and long distance hauls can take him away for a few days at a time in the winter months. Winter feeding is set up in a series of paddocks so that all someone has to do is let cows in for chop and then open a gate to the next paddock for more feed. This is just another of Harold’s innovative ways of keeping operations simple!

The Saskatchewan Hereford Association and the Southeast Hereford Zone would like to congratulate Harold Henderson on being selected as Saskatchewan's 2016 Commercial Producer of the Year.

Canadian Hereford Association

Fee Changes Effective January 1, 2017 Animals 18 Months of Age and Under 36 Months of Age Avoid paying extra fees! Check that you've got registration papers on all your 1st calving heifers before you go to register their 1st calves and discover they are not done! Registration fees for animals 18 to 36 months of age will be $150.00.

New Age Category The CHA board has created a new age category. Registration fees for animals over 36 months will be $450.00. Note: DNA parentage verification is still required on all animals 30 months of age and over.

Don't Wait to Pay More If you have online access, the Calf Crop (under Herd Details or Performance Details) is a great place to check! If you do not have online access, double check your registration certificates.

AI Sire Permits Both the Semen Certificate Program and the Non-Certificate Program will be $350.00. The In-Herd Permit remains the same at $50.00.

Spring EPDs The new Spring 2017 EPDs have been released and are now posted on the Animal Inquiry pages of the website. Performance members can run their calf, sire and dam EPD reports if they have access to the online system. Any questions, contact val@hereford.ca.

CHA Hiring for Business Development Coordinator The CHA will be accepting resumes for the Business Development Coordinator position. Detailed position profile can be requested from the CHA by emailing herefords@hereford.ca.

DNA Instructions All sires (AI or Natural) must have a DNA profile on file at the Canadian Hereford Association, in order that calves may be eligible for registration. All ET calves must be DNA parentage tested, before registration.

All animals submitted for DNA testing will also be tested for Hypotrichosis, Dilutor and Idiopathic Epilepsy abnormalities with results published on the Canadian Hereford Association website. First, please contact the CHA office with a list of your bulls (names/registration #s &/or tattoos) in order to obtain preprinted applications (which must accompany the hair). Guidelines for PULLING hair:

1.Pull hair samples from the tail switch. the hair must be CLEAN (free of fecal matter) and DRY. DO NOT CUT HAIR. Cut hair samples will not provide DNA for the tests. 2.Pull the hair evenly and directly away from the tail so that the hair does not break. 3.Pull approximately 40 to 50 hair roots (min 80 hairs for higher density tests). 4.If you already have a DNA application from the CHA office: Place the hair in a straight line across the center area on the form, which is reserved for the hair samples. Keep the hair together with the roots to the left as indicated. DO NOT CURL the hair. Tape the center of the hair shafts with tape so that the hair stays in place. Storage: If you don't already have a DNA application and are planning to store the sample, place th3 hair in a paper envelope (not plastic), clearly identified, store at room temperature in a dry location away from sunlight (i.e. filing cabinet) 5.Fold the hair kit as you would a business letter and place the form into its individual envelope. Complete this process for each animal before proceeding to sample the next animal. Please ensure that hair from only one animal is included in each envelope since it is not possible for lab staff to detect any contamination which may occur. If you have several samples to send, put the individual envelopes into one larger one for mailing. Fees are payable to the CHA and will now be invoiced when DNA applications are requested, rather than when the results are sent to members. ($40.00 + GST per sample). We strongly recommend that if in the future, there is a possibility that semen will be drawn, that hair samples also be collected on both the sire and dam for parentage qualification (requirement for A.I. Sire Permitting bulls).

Increase to national beef checkoff to come in 2017 Canadian beef producers should expect to see an increase to the Canadian Beef Cattle Check-Off. “I suspect producers will see this take effect in 2017. But, it is hard for me to nail down an exact time that producers will start to see it reflected on their sales receipts,” said Melinda German, general manager of the Canadian Beef Check-Off Agency. “What we are targeting is that some provinces will look to implement the increase in January, while most will look to implement this in April.” The national checkoff is currently a mandatory $1 levy Canadian beef producers pay on each head of cattle they market. The checkoff generates approximately $7.5 million annually. That amount is then divided to support marketing and promotion, through Canada Beef, and industry research through the Beef Cattle Research Council (BCRC). The goal of the checkoff is to increase the sales of domestic and export beef, and find better, more efficient methods of producing beef and beef cattle. “The national checkoff came into place about 17 years ago and we have never seen an increase to that. What that means, is that right now we are operating on about a 70-cent dollar when we just include inflation and not all the other things that can erode that dollar,” German said. “Not only is that dollar eroded to about a 70-cent dollar, but we have also seen our cattle inventory in Canada decrease significantly. What that means is smaller budgets for those national groups. What this increase will mean is the ability to not only continue programming for those national groups at the level they are now, but also enhance them.” A few years ago the National Beef Strategy, a group of representatives from across the Canadian beef industry, proposed an increase from $1/head to $2.50/head. Since that time, provincial organizations have presented the proposed increase to their producers. “Producers had an opportunity to attend those meetings. Right now, eight of the nine provinces we deal with have had a positive resolution or motion come to their AGM and passed in support of that increase,” German said.

Cattle Call - February 2017 Cattle Call – February 2017

Evaluating value Every five years the Canadian Beef Cattle Check-Off Agency has committed to conducting a study that will examine the economic benefits from the checkoff. “What do you get for your checkoff? Where is the value in the checkoff? It recently conducted this study that looked at the years 2011 through 2014,” Lemon said. “Every time you pay your $1/head national checkoff, it returns $14 worth of value to the beef industry, in terms of new and improved innovations, efficiencies, new markets, bigger markets, market access, those sorts of things.” The study, Evaluating the Economic Benefits from the Canadian Beef Cattle Check-off, was the second analysis of the checkoff and was completed in June. “Every five years we commission someone to evaluate and crunch the numbers about what is getting back to producers for the dollars they give up. How well are we working on their behalf?” German said. “What we found this year was the return on investment rose to 14:1. That is very significant and if we compare that to our trading partners in Australia and the U.S., we find that our return on investment is higher and we are doing a very good job.” Next step At this point the Canadian Beef Cattle Check-Off Agency is working with provincial organizations to get through the paperwork of enacting the increase. “It does get fairly complicated because every province has different rules and regulations,” German said. “So, a little complicated, but not undoable, it just takes us some time to go through the process and the paperwork.” “We are currently working on negotiating agreements with each province. Most of the provinces will be signing those in December and January. So, by February we will have a lot more knowledge as to when we might anticipate that increase,” German said. Hereford Juniors Recognized with Scholarships From Canadian Western Agribition Three Hereford juniors received post-secondary education scholarships at Canadian Western Agribition in 2016. Cassandra Gorrill from Lindsay, Ont., first came to Agribition in 2010. She has bought a heifer from a farm in Saskatchewan, so decided to come out and watch her show. She participated in showmanship and in 2015 won the National 4-H and Youth Judging Competition and judged the First Lady Classic. Gorrill is in her 4th year studying animal science. Emma Nicholas from Milestone, Sk., can't pick a favorite breed from the two her family raises: Hereford and Gelbvieh. She grew up at Agribition. Her family has been showing cattle at the show since before she was born and her involvement with 4-H has helped maintain a passion for the industry. Nicholas is in Grade 12 and plans to attend the University of Saskatchewan to study either agribusiness or animal science. Morgan Heidecker also credits 4-H and family involvement for her love of the beef cattle industry. She grew up on Triple H Farm at Middle Lake, SK., and is in her second year studying agribusiness at the U of S. She and her siblings are integral to Triple H, and she owns five cattle of her own. Morgan says that Agribition is a great for networking and has helped her and the other scholarship winners make lifelong friends. Cattle Call – February 2017
