Association News

From the SHA Office

Marilyn Charlton, General Manager

Happy New Year! I hope you enjoyed a wonderful holiday season with family and friends. It was a busy year for the association last year and heading into this year it will get even busier. The Saskatchewan Juniors will be hosting the 40th Anniversary of Bonanza on July 31 to August 3 at Weyburn, Saskatchewan. Information about Bonanza can be found by checking out their website at saskjrhereford.com. Along with the activities connected to Bonanza, the Canadian Hereford Association will be hosting their annual general meeting. Further details will be posted on the CHA website and in the summer issue of Cattle Call. Congratulations to Mike Sabine and family of Sabine Land and Livestock at Swift Current, Saskatchewan for receiving the Saskatchewan Commercial Producer of the Year. You can read about the Sabines on page 21 of this issue. Last January, the board gave the Red Coat Classic committee the task of coming up with a new format for the event. Since we have been unable to secure a venue during Agribition to host the show under the old format, the committee changed the Red Coat from a show to a heifer draw. Thank you to Glenlees Farm, Arcola, Sk for supplying the heifer for the draw. The new format was a huge success and our congratulations to the winner of the Red Coat Classic Heifer Draw, Wayne & Edith Skelton of Winfield,AB. Also our thanks to the many breeders and businesses that donated prizes that were valued in excess of $10,000 and to everyone who purchased tickets. The National Hereford Show at Agribition saw a decrease in numbers last year but that was consistant with many of the breeds. None the less, it was a great show and an impressive quality of Hereford cattle on display. Thank you to the sponsors, volunteers, breeders and our reception sponsor, JJ Trucking, Arcola, Sk, for your continued support that contributes greatly to the success of this event. Thank you to T Bar C Cattle Co. Ltd., for generously contributing funds from the Agribition sale to the SHA. Check out page 24 for the list of sponsors and volunteers.

completed. The North West Sask Hereford Club will be hosting a tour this summer on August 8 & 9, 2019. This is an opportunity to visit the breeders in the northwest part of Saskatchewan. Watch their website for updates at www.NWHCtour.com or for more information you can also give Jesse Bannerman, NW President at call at 306.845.9194. The board will be meeting in January to review the past year, putting committees in place and setting the budget for 2019. Last year, the association saw an increase in transfers with memberships remaining the same as the previous year. A more complete presentation of the associations past year financials and activity updates will be given at the SHA annual meeting that is now held the third week of June each year. Election of directors to the SHA board is part of this meeting and we encourage anyone interested in letting their name stand for election to contact President, Stephen Myer. Watch your mailbox in mid May for the summer issue of Cattle Call that will include the date, place and time for the meeting. We look foward to seeing you in June. Tom Dorrance, Wawota, Sk received his 75 year membership pin. In 1942, Tom joined the association and was assigned tattoo letters EVU. The first animal registered under his name was Miss Dainty Stanway EV 177-157977 born April 15, 1943. Our sincere sympathy is extended to the Oddan family on the passing of Agnes Oddan. Hope you will take in the Hereford bull sales in your area always a great offering to choose from. Good luck everyone for a successful bull sale and calving season!

Presentations were made during the show. Membership pins were presented: Lexie Girodat, 25 years; Rocking G Land & Cattle, 25 years; and Rodney Gamble 50 years. The Crittenden Bros., Gordon and Howard, were presented with the CHA Honor Roll. Murray Andrews was presented with his director plaque and Doug Mann was presented with his CHA President's jacket as his 2 year term as CHA President is Cattle Call - February 2019

SHA President’s Report - Stephen Myer

Welcome to 2019 everyone! From my home to yours, may it be a great one. We are fresh into planning for the new round of bull sale and calf arrival. May your bull purchases last long, all your cows be fertile, and your days be efficient and safe. What I’m saying I guess is to make sure to keep some Hereford involved! The past year was full of challenges for cattle producers, but our kind are no strangers to handling adversity. The winter of 2018 was a cold miserable one that chewed away at feed stores and cost a lot of cash. Summer saw very few general rains and led to a long drawn out fall season. My heart goes out to any of you that were forced to downsize or disperse due to the weather. Lets all hope for less harsh weather in 2019. From a Saskatchewan Hereford Association view 2018 was a pretty decent year and there are some exciting Hereford events coming to Saskatchewan in 2019. The number of Hereford breeders in Saskatchewan, along with the number of newly registered cattle, was relatively static again in 2018. The number of transfers was up; however, they were down about the same number in 2017. I believe there are more Hereford bulls being used on cows of other breeds now than there was 5-10 years ago, but there are fewer cows to be bred than there used to be. One of our biggest constraints is the lack of feedlots buying Hereford steers, thus diminishing returns for feeder calves. There is a stigma that we need to continue to erode. I encourage everyone to continue culling relentlessly, preserve the traits that make Herefords great cattle, and to seek out genetics that will help us compete with the other breeds and gain back some market share. Are we doing enough to make an opportunity, will we be ready if it comes? If you are looking for the height of the Hereford breed in genetics and youth be sure to join the Canadian Junior Hereford Association in Weyburn this coming summer for the 40 th annual Bonanza junior show. Events run from July 31-August 3, 2019 and the show is coupled with the Canadian Hereford AGM and annual meetings. There promises to be a large contingent of cattle and kids, and the organizing committee has been working hard to make sure this year is another great success. There will be sponsorship and volunteer opportunities for anyone looking to get involved. Contact the Sask Hereford office for more details. The North West Herford Club is planning a two-day Hereford tour August 8-9 th, 2019. Tour stops will all be within 110 km of Lloydminster with many additional breeders bringing cattle to the tour stops. They invite you to join in on the cattle and hospitality. For more information see the ad in this edition. In closing I would like to thank everyone who participated in SHA programs this past year and wish everyone success with bull sales and calving in 2019.

SA BIN E LA N D A N D LIV ESTO C K Up on a hill, southwest of Swift Current, Saskatchewan, you can see four old homesteads belonging to past generations of the Sabine family of Sabine Land and Livestock. Mike and Tricia Sabine and their children Jenna (15) and Carson (13) calve around 300 cows and crop roughly 4,000 acres of peas, lentils, wheat, barley, flax and fall rye. Mike grew up on a similarily mixed operation, three miles northeast of where they farm now, at a time when a future in agriculture was perceived to be not very bright. He was encouraged to go to college after high school graduation but backed out at the last minute. He had no desire to go to school and really wanted to farm his whole life. In hindsight, he says he it actually worked out pretty well because at the time, land was fairly reasonable and as he says, a guy could work off that farm and easily make payments on the land. Now, he says, it seems no matter where a guy looks, the value of land continues to rise, making starting from scratch a daunting task. Nevertheless, Mike holds strong to the belief that where there is a will, there's always a way, when it comes to working in agriculture where the rewards aren't always monetary. As it turns out, Tricia actually has a Bachelors of Science in Agriculture, which complements the farm and helps their operation continue to be innovative. Mike's parents still farm where Mike grew up, running an Angus-based cowherd. Since Mike and Tricia value cross-breeding, and after a few experimental crosses, they started using Polled Hereford bulls on their black cowherd and have done so since about 2009. They say they have seen a great return on this decision. Hybrid vigor, they say, is most noticeable at weaning and is especially noticeable when the calves are marketed. There is increased income in the added weight that the calves are gaining and demand for the crossbreds are good. The same applies to the cowherd itself. They say that the Hereford-cross cow performs better and last longer than any other cross they have tried. They are also a testament to the Hereford breed's docility, they say. The last three out of four years have been very dry. Water quality testing is something they do frequently. And recently, they chose to dig a 750-foot-deep well to ensure a sustainable supply close to home and for nearby pastures. The Sabines manage their cows through an extended grazing season. Calves are weaned in November and marketed through JGL Livestock in Moose Jaw. Cows are then turned out on to grain land to graze the crop residue as well as some stockpiled grass. When needed, to maintain cow condition, hay and screening pellets are supplemented. In these cases, the Sabines

let cows bale-graze on hilltops that need added organic matter and extra nitrogen, which the hay, cattle urine and manure provide. The Sabines hold a respect for the native grasses on their operation. They have an on-farm policy that native grass is never to be broken for crop land. The value in that grass is important to the sustainability of the ranch and preserving it is something they are proud of doing. "After a few years of bale grazing strategically on certain hill tops, there is a noticeable difference in the land's productivity," says Mike. Almost all of the Sabines' cropland is covered by the cows at least once, over the winter months. To facilitate this, the Sabines originally invested a lot of time and money in fencing, developing sustainable water sources and planting several miles of shelterbelts. Grazing the cropland has povided the Sabines the benefits of added feed value, fuel and labour savings, an extended grazing season and natural fertilization through manure. All of their cropland, pastures and hay land are certified organic. Having cattle cover all of their cropland is part of their soil fertility and weed management strategy. "Unlike most farmers my age, I have never operated a sprayer or applied fertilizer," says Mike, whose father started into organic farming in the early eighties. Organic grain farming is all Mike has ever known. While their pastures and hay land are managed organically, the Sabines have not marketed their cattle organically but should markets show more of a demand for that designation, Mike says they will be ready. Bulls are turned out early to mid June so that calving can start in early March and wrap up, if possible, before seeding. Bull section involves looking at performance numbers and EPDs but according to Mike, the numbers are never a deciding factor. "it doesn't matter how good his numbers may be," says Mike. "If he doesn't look good, he isn't going to make it as a bull." Mike and Tricia do like to take time to get away with their young family and they all make an effort to get up to Lake Diefenbaker to spend time at their cabin, when possible. They are proud of their kids and how involved they are with the farm. Mike says that he hopes they will be interested in taking over the farm one day. In the meantime, he and Tricia are nurturing the land and all of the possibilities for an expansive, viable, innovative and sustainable operation into the future.

Canadian Meat Council calls food pricing report 'misleading'

Get ready to access antibiotics: Establish a vet-clientpatient relationship

The Canadian Food Price Report for 2019 was unveiled this week, and the findings raised the eyebrows of many, including those within the Canadian Meat Council (CMC). The report was put out by the University of Guelph and the University of Dalhousie.

Beginning later this year, livestock owners across Canada will have to jump through one extra hoop before accessing certain antibiotic veterinary products. The move is part of a broader strategy to manage antibiotic resistance in human health, and it’s not without controversy.

The two schools cite the price of meat is set to decline as more people are choosing plant-based proteins. "We are seeing meat prices decline while plant-based proteins are on the rise, in addition to seafood price fluctuations due to availability, quality and traceability of certain imported products. Despite the anticipated negative numbers for these two categories, overall food prices are expected to rise up to 3.5% in 2019. This represents a slight increase from last year. " Using numbers from Statistics Canada, the CMC says data shows meat consumption by Canadians has decreased steadily between 2004 to 2015 — and not suddenly because of any specific dietary trends. The group adds that the current beef demand index is strong and only shows a decrease of two per cent for this year as it continues to maintain levels not seen since the late 1980s. “The report is misleading and makes assumptions that meat prices in Canada could go down because of demand and new market entries, when in fact many factors need to be considered,” says Chris White, president of the CMC. “The global spike in meat prices in 2013-14 drove world wide meat production expansion. Increased supply has allowed prices to begin to decline across the world including in Canada,” he adds. The CMC goes on to say market pressures, such as feed prices and other factors, can also affect the price of animals, and this trickles down to the retail price of meat. Adding that despite recent price decreases in beef by 4.2 per cent over last October, prices throughout 2018 have been higher than the five-year average, with prices also being pressured by higher domestic beef supply, as opposed to a decrease in demand. Highlighting a different poll conducted in 2017, the CMC pointed out, of 1,000-plus Canadians surveyed, 72 per cent of respondents reported eating three or less servings of meat a week and that, three out of four respondents understand the important role that red meat plays in getting essential nutrients for health.

Starting in December, farmers will need an existing vet-client patient relationship (VCPR) to access certain antibiotics by vet prescription, heralding in concerns regarding timely treating of animals, added paperwork, and costs. On the list are very familiar names like oxytetracycline and penicillin — products currently available at feed stores and other farm supply locations. Dr. Judy Currie, a veterinarian and secretary of the Saskatchewan Veterinary Medical Association, presented this week to the Saskatchewan Stock Growers Association regarding the new antibiotic access rules coming into force. Shaun Haney was there to ask her more about the VCPR, what it is and what it isn’t, and how farmers and ranchers may approach livestock health under the new rules. “People who already have a good working relationship with their veterinarian are going to see little difference when this law comes into effect,” Currie says. It’s those that are very far from a vet or who don’t currently work with vets that will have the most adapting to do. She says we could see more rapid evolution of tele-medicine — using video, phone calls, photos, and lab samples remotely to make a diagnoses — because of the new rules, but that too is a somewhat controversial topic for vets. Farmers and ranchers need to know that a vet-client relationship has always been a requirement of any veterinary recommendation, vets themselves and as an industry simply haven’t been that vocal or public about how it factors in to livestock care, Currie says. The same can be said for the requirement to keep good records of assessment and treatment plans. “If it’s not written down, it didn’t happen,” she says. For example, if in the case of an insurance claim, if you can’t produce a medical record of symptoms, test results, and/or treatment plan from your vet, the claim won’t likely proceed. Good record keeping has always been an important part of livestock care.

cattle chat Will these new rules and decreased convenience of access to antibiotics have an impact on antibiotic resistance? Currie can only say that preventing and managing resistance is the responsibility of each person, livestock owner, and veterinarian, and that begins with responsible use of these very important products.

Costco announces new policy to reduce antibiotic use across meat supply chains Costco Wholesale announced it is updating company animal welfare standards to reduce the use of medically important antibiotics in its meat and poultry supply chains. Announced earlier this week on the same day as McDonald’s own policy commitment, Costco’s new direction follows similar lines to the seller of Big Macs. “Our policy is to limit application of these antibiotics to therapeutic use for the prevention, control, and treatment of disease and not, for example, for purposes of growth promotion or feed efficiency, and only under the supervision of a licensed veterinarian in a valid Veterinary Client Patient Relationship,” the company says. Both McDonald’s’ and Costco’s policy falls in line with Canada’s latest regulations, effective December 1, 2018, which now requires veterinary oversight to access most antibiotics for livestock use. Over the next two years, Costco plans to “develop and apply protocols for assessing compliance with this policy,” which may include: · requiring the provision of certificates or affidavits by producers; · review of audits commissioned by producers and suppliers; · audits commissioned by Costco Wholesale; and · product testing. Costco commits to announcing a compliance date for its supply chains “on or before December, 2020,” and says it will assess the feasibility of “eliminating the routine use of medically important antibiotics for prevention of disease among supplier farms.”

Merck to acquire parent company of Allflex SCR By Wyatt Bechtel

The owners of Allflex ear tags and SCR dairy monitoring technology is being acquired by Merck. The acquisition of the Antelliq Group, formerly known as the Allflex Group, was made public on Dec. 14 in a joint press release by Merck and Antelliq. Properties of Antelliq will be wholly owned and separately operated subsidiary within the Merck Animal Health Division. Merck will make a cash payment of approximately $2.37 billion (2.1 billion euros) to purchase all of Antelliq’s outstanding shares.

Merck will also assume Antelliq’s remaining debt which will be repaid after the acquisition closes. Antelliq is a leader in the digital animal identification, traceability and monitoring solutions category with brands like Allflex and SCR. The company had $407 million (360 million euros) worth of sales for the 12 month period ending Sept. 30, 2018. SCR was acquired by the Allflex Group through BC Partners in Dec. 2014. Then on Feb. 5, 2018, the group name was changed to Antelliq. “Merck Animal Health is a leader in the animal health business and has delivered consistent above-market growth driven by a broad portfolio of innovative pharmaceuticals, vaccines and other value-added technologies and services. Antelliq’s people and products complement this portfolio by adding market-leading digital products, extending the range of solutions we can provide our customers and further driving the growth of our business,” says Kenneth C. Frazier, chairman and chief executive officer, Merck. “This acquisition is well aligned with our strategy to generate long-term growth and sustainable value for our customers and shareholders.” The purchase of Antelliq is seen as helping complement Merck Animal Health’s already strong portfolio of vaccines and pharmaceuticals by getting into the digital traceability and identification market for animals. “Merck has a strong and growing animal health business, and we are delighted that our superior offering of technology, products and services, as well as our global relationships, together with Merck, will bring additional value to our customers,” says Stefan Weiskopf, DVM, chief executive officer, Antelliq. “With more than 60 years of experience, we are constantly reimagining animal care to improve the quality of life for animals and for the people who care for them.” “The animal health industry is rapidly evolving with revolutionary digital solutions to manage the health and well-being of livestock and companion animals,” says Rick DeLuca, president, Merck Animal Health. “Animal identification, animal monitoring and smart data management are critical components of this transformative technology. This acquisition represents yet another way that we will ensure our place as a leader in animal health, with a substantial and sustainable position, including the most innovative, technological solutions to serve our customers. Through our commitment to the Science of Healthier Animals™, we are dedicated to preserving and improving the health, wellbeing and performance of animals.” Jean-Baptiste Wautier, chairman of Antelliq and partner at BC Partners says, “Antelliq is a unique business which played a pivotal role in driving forward the convergence of the animal intelligence and animal health industries globally. We are proud of the transformation of the company that we initiated together with a fantastic leadership team over the past five years and believe that

cattle chat Merck is an ideal partner for Antelliq to support the next stage of its growth. As a truly innovative market leader with a clear vision and dynamic team, Antelliq has significant potential to continue leading the industry, as the use of intelligence, data and technology play an increasingly important role in animal health and care.”

Getting the deal done on the CPTPP was a top lobbying goal for the CCA, even though there were moments of doubt.

Prior to the transaction closing it will be subject to clearance by antitrust and competition law authorities and other customary closing conditions. The companies expect the deal to close by the second quarter of 2019. Merck was represented by Barclays and Centerview Partners and Antelliq was represented by Goldman Sachs International and Rothschild & Co.

Japan is a member of the CPTPP and is Canada’s second-best beef customer.

Consumers want "clear labels" on lab-grown meat An overwhelming number of consumers say they want food products developed from cultured animal cells to be clearly labeled as such, according to Consumer Reports. In a national phone survey conducted during June, Consumer Reports found 49% said lab-grown animal products should be labeled as “meat, but accompanied by an explanation about how it is produced,” while another 40 percent said it should be labeled as “something other than meat.” Only five percent thought it should be labeled as “meat without any further explanation.” The survey was released on the same day that the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) held a public meeting on the safety of these emerging food products. “By an overwhelming margin, our survey found that consumers want clear labels identifying meat produced in the lab from cultured animal cells,” said Dr. Michael Hansen, senior scientist for Consumers Union, the advocacy division of Consumer Reports. “Federal regulators should ensure these emerging food products are clearly labeled so consumers can make informed choices for their families and easily distinguish them from conventional meat.” In addition, when given a list of seven terms and asked to choose which would constitute accurate labels, the most commonly chosen terms were “lab-grown meat” (35%) and “artificial or synthetic meat” (34%). The least commonly chosen terms were “cultured meat” (11%), “clean meat” (9%), and “in vitro meat” (8%).

Beef exports poised for big jump, thanks to new trade deal By Barbara Duckworth

Ratification of the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership was music to David Haywood-Farmer’s ears. “It will put us in a great spot to get things done,” said the president of the Canadian Cattlemen’s Association.

“I am happy to see the lobby efforts from all of us that the ratification went through so smoothly,” he told delegates to the Alberta Beef Producers annual meeting held in Calgary Dec. 3-5.

On Jan. 1, beef tariffs drop by 11 percent to 27.5 percent followed by annual minor tariff reductions of less than one percent until duties hit nine percent by 2033. Exports add $602 per head so better access is critical following the BSE-induced market collapse, said Haywood-Farmer. “A large part of the last decade has been spent focusing on regaining lost markets and access due to BSE in 2003. Since that has occurred, our focus has shifted to new trade agreements to keep producers competitive,” he said. This year most beef exports are up in volume and value, said Ron Glaser of Canada Beef. However the best customers for Canadian beef are here at home. In 2017, total beef consumption in Canada was 923,820 tonnes of which about three-quarters was domestic product while the rest was imported. The U.S. is the primary destination for Canadian exports at about 75 percent but Canada only fills about three percent of their total beef supply. Sales to Asia are increasing but are relatively small in overall volumes. “In all of these markets around the world we are in single digits in terms of their total supply. We are not there to sell to every single customer. We are there to find that right customer who aligns with Canadian beef and values our brand positioning and can be a long-term partner,” he said. In the last five to seven years, China has become a growth market and since chilled and boneless beef was allowed, sales should increase. Canadian beef is also found in Taiwan, Vietnam, Singapore, Philippines and Indonesia. These accept small volumes now but growth from repeat customers is building. Prior to the BSE discovery in Canada, Mexico and Latin America offered markets for cow beef. Mexican sales have declined partly because that country is growing its domestic beef industry and is starting to export beef.

cattle chat Blockchain for the beef chain By Katrina Huffstutler

The IBM brand isn’t often associated with the cattle business. But that may change, thanks to the tech giant’s IBM Food Trust and its use of blockchain. That’s just what it sounds like: blocks of information that form a chain, linked via internet to allow information sharing that is seamless, efficient and secure. Its primary application is between partners across an industry striving to achieve improved transparency, traceability, sustainability — and ultimately, even profitability. Nigel Gopie, marketing leader for the IBM initiative, told 200 cattlemen at the late-summer Feeding Quality Forum in Sioux City, Iowa, the system offers trust and transparency in places where it either doesn’t exist or could be improved. “In the food industry, in particular,” Gopie said, “there are a lot of concerns about food safety, food fraud, sustainability, and others. We believe that, with blockchain, we can bring light to problems that have plagued us for centuries.” Take food safety, for example. With blockchain, the source of contamination could be pinpointed easily.

Gopie said blockchain is about fact finding, not fault finding. And beyond that, it’s important to remember an outbreak may not be related to time on the hoof anyway. “It could’ve been any point during the supply chain, but by having the visibility, you’re able to help figure out where different paths cross, and then you’re able to identify the problem,” he said. “So, it may not be on a farm at all. However, if it is on your farm, wouldn’t you want to know? Secondly, if it was not on your farm, you’d also want to share that information.” That’s only one part of the equation. In a much bigger sense, blockchain’s application can allow a new and better way for consumers to feel connected to their food from pasture to plate. “A lot of us folks who live in a city love the idea of understanding where our food comes from, seeing pictures of where our cattle are raised. I think that sort of connection allows us to feel closer with the food that we’re eating, realize that the men and women who are raising these products really care about them, and it’s the same thing that they would feed their families at home,” Gopie said. “And so, it provides us with a little more trust about the entire system by allowing that connection to take place.”

“With blockchain, we’re able to solve problems that we never could solve before,” Gopie said.

The forum was presented by the Certified Angus Beef (CAB) brand.

The benefits of information sharing works, in both directions.

Sask. delays end to Livestock Loan Guarantee Program

“I could learn more about your organization by sharing data, I can learn more about my organization, but also together, we can learn a whole lot more,” he said “What we believe in is, the whole is greater than the sum of the parts.” Is it secure? Gopie assured the audience it is. “With blockchain, your data belongs to you,” he said. “We believe your data does not belong to the solution, nor does it belong to your transaction partners. And so, your data is held in secure environments and it’s only shared when you want to share it. It’s encrypted and no one can get access to that data unless you permission it.” He said cattlemen have flexibility when it comes to sharing, too. “You don’t have to permission all of your data — you can share pieces of data, you can share all of your data, and you can share data with me or your transaction partners one month, but then change that permissioning so we share different data or no data at all the following month,” Gopie said. And what about liability? Would a rancher or feeder be responsible if E. coli was traced back to his operation? What would that look like?

By Karen Briere

The wind-down of Saskatchewan’s Livestock Loan Guarantee Program has been extended to July 31, 2019. Last August, the province announced it would discontinue the program that guaranteed loans to breeder and feeder associations.Originally, the government said the program would end Dec. 31, 2018, but that was pushed to July after discussions found that more time was needed. “Extending the LLG provincial guarantee to July 31, 2019, allows one full year from the date of the program wind-down announcement to facilitate an efficient transition for lenders, producers and associations,” said an email from the agriculture ministry. “Both lenders and program participants requested more time to adequately develop transition options for new cooperative lending models.” The ministry said participation in the program has been dropping, and only about two percent of the livestock herd is financed this way. In 2010, there were 81 associations but now only 45 are participating. These associations include 980 people with an average age of 50 years old. As well, 75 percent of participants are financing less than 50 head. The largest association has 46 members while the smallest has just three. The government said ranchers have a number of lending options in the private sector, and lending and financing is not a core business of the government.

Residual Feed Intake Testing There are 2 more test periods coming up: March 1 to May 2 (for cattle born before July 4) May 13 to July 16 (for cattle born before Sept 17) The cost for the RFI testing period is $300. DNA will be an additional cost of $42 per animal. This gets you parentage, abnormalities.

The Authorization to Use a Natural Service Sire is often an alternative to a lease. There is no charge for this option but it does not allow for time periods to be recorded; only number of uses (signatures).

Please contact sarah@hereford.ca if you are interested in participating or call 1-888-836-7242.

DNA

Marketing Semen? Selling Embryos? Want to Reach Canada and Exportable Markets? The primary target market for the Semen & Embryo Directory will be Canadian producers, but more emphasis will be placed on exportable genetics.

Don’t get caught waiting for DNA! If you’ve got animals entered in sales in the new year, collect those DNA samples for any ETs, sires or ‘dams of AI sires’ right away! Be sure to allow a minimum of 4 weeks at the lab for DNA results. Applications are easily available through your online log-in under “Requests”. You can print these immediately to send with the samples! · All natural sires and donor dams require DNA on file

The booking deadline for the Semen & Embryo Directory is January 25, 2019.

· All AI sires must be fully parentage verified to both parents

Tattoos For more information contact Jacob at jacob@hereford.ca

THE Members Watch for your 2019 Herd Inventory

Avoid issues at the upcoming sales, take a look in the ears. All animals must have a clear and distinct tattoo. If you have a tattoo that is not satisfactory, contact the CHA office for Permission to Re-tattoo. Do not add or alter a tattoo without contacting the CHA office.

Online users will see their 2019 Herd Inventories appear sometime in January. Inventories will only be mailed to those who do not have Online System access.

Leases In what cases should a lease be used? Females · If you own a female jointly and that partnership does not have an active Canadian Hereford Association membership · If you wish to retain ownership and have agreement for someone else to register progeny It is not recommended to lease donor dams. In most nonowned donor dam situations a Sale of Embryo (no charge) can accommodate the need to get ET calves registered without a lease.

Calving season is upon us! Not only is it important to keep permanent, accurate and complete records - it is mandatory for purebred breeders! Pocket Herd Books are available at no charge from the CHA office.

Collecting Weights Did you know calves do not have to actually be weaned to be weighed for 205-day weights (weaning weights)? · The commonly used term "weaning weight", is actually the weight taken around 205 days of birth · The 205 day weight can be taken from 110-300 days of age and should be taken just prior or at the time of weaning

Lot 19 in 2019 Contact libby@hereford.ca for details and to get involved with this fundraising campaign. Charitable tax receipts are issued for donations made to the Keith Gilmore Foundation.

Cow weights should be taken at time of weaning. Yearling weights can be taken from 301-530 days of age. For all weights: · always provide the weight date · management groups are required. They help to determine how the animals should be compared · males and females will automatically be grouped separately · when assigning management groups, any of the following should be grouped separately: - fed differently - sick - orphaned - fostered

The Juniors launch their new logo!

The Whiteface Advantage A Canadian Hereford Association project in partnership with Livestock Media Plus to develop a campaign of testimonial videos for use over social media and other audio-visual platforms.

The Hereford Steer Show-down This program lauches this fall. In co-operation with Olds College - a partner that has time and time again delivered quality programming. The CHA will be feeding 80 steers from participating farms, to engage our breeders and juniors in a demonstration of commertcial cattle feeding. The partnering sponsors - Elanco, Feedlot Health Management, Windy Ridge Ultrasound and Boehringer Ingelheim are working with the CHA to deliver new educational programming to CHA members, juniors and anyone else who should participate. Watch for upcoming webinars on topics like feedlot health, risk management and carcass genetics that will be directly tied to the information gathered from the Hereford Steer Show-down. These real-life projects can help the breed promote its important role within the commercial cattle feeding sector, while allowing the association to collect important data for breed improvement and overall carcass merit.

Hereford Plus A new program designed to provide genetic services to producers that are using Hereford genetics ikn cross-breeding programs. This program allows breeders of Hereford influenced cattle to begin to work with the CHA staff to build and track the genetics of their crossbred herd. The program allows for genetics analysis of crossbred cattle which will allow for potentially better indentification of favourable herd replacements and marketing opportunities. Across the industry, we are seeing more and more commercial ranchers becoming engaged in the genetic improvement of their cowherds. You are seeing increased demand from across the industry to measure the genetic merit of cattle to improve efficiencies.

Semen Donation Program The Canadian Junior Hereford Association has, for many years, assisted it's members in developing their breeding program through the SEMEN DONATION PROJECT. This program depends on the support of Canadian Hereford breeders to donate semen from top Hereford bulls from across Canada. The CJHA conducts a draw to award donated semen to junior's who nominate their females. By doing this CJHA members are given the opportunity to improve their own breeding programs by having access to free semen to artificially inseminate their own registered Hereford females from some of the top bulls in the industry as donated by Canadian Hereford breeders. The semen donation program is one of the most far-reaching programs offered by the CJHA. By providing Juniors with greater access to superior genetics, they are able to improve the cattle they have available for sale. Sales that often finance herd expansion and allow the Junior to establish a career in agriculture or finance post-secondary education. The semen donation program is also linked to Bonanza, as one of the conformation classes in the cattle show is made up exclusively of entries that have resulted from the semen donation program. Watch your mailboxes for the Semen Doantion Information and the 2019 Calendars coming your way soon. Or you can go online and download the Semen Donation forms and check out the available bulls.
