Association News

From the SHA Office

Marilyn Charlton, General Manager

Members and friends of the Saskatchewan Hereford Association gathered on June 16 for the annual meeting held at the Ag in Motion site, Saskatoon, Sk.

and certainly provided education and generated discussion by those in attendance.

Elected to the SHA Board to serve a three year term were: James Hordos, Raymore, Sk; Stephen Myer, Maidstone, Sk; Logan Martinson, Midale, Sk; and Matt Lohner, Kipling, Sk. Chad Nicholas of Milestone, Sk was elected to the board of the Canadian Hereford Association and will start his three year term on January 1, 2018. The association would like to thank Tina Lees and David Reid for their years of service to the SHA and Canadian Hereford Association boards. Thanks to Rob O'Connor for securing a venue for our meeting.

Thanks to the Northwest Sask Hereford Club and the Southeast Hereford zone for your hospitality at the field days this summer. Again you hosted two successful events that attracted attendance from outside the province and featured strong Hereford genetics. Special thank you to all the sponsors, volunteers and breeders that brought cattle.

The association was pleased to report a profit for the year ending 2016. In January, the board re-instated the advertising and promotion committee under the direction of chair Rob O'Connor. Rob made a presentation to the meeting that included ideas on how the SHA could better promote Herefords in our province and increase the opportunity to sell Hereford cattle within our borders. Lance Leachman presented the Mentorship program that was established to encourage young people to obtain advice, feedback and expand their base skills and knowledge to assist them in enhancing their personal growth in the livestock industry. Deadline for applications is December 1, 2017. For more information and details on this program check out our website under Juniors at www.saskhereford.com.

Agribition is not that far away and I know many of you will be making plans to attend the Hereford Show. I have a limited number of rooms available, so if you need one please get in touch with me by October 20. The Red Coat Classic has changed the entry deadline to November 1. To enter all you have to do is contact me by phone or email to let me know the name of the animal(s) you wish to enter or fill out the entry form found on page 24of this issue and put in in the mail to me. Make sure to send me a picture of your bull or heifer so that we can profile them on the website prior to the show. The South West Tour held on August 10 & 11 was a huge success. The weather was great and it attracted people from Alberta, Manitoba and Montana. Over the two days, 200 people took the opportunity to view cattle and share a visit. Thanks to Hills Galore Stock Farm, Phantom Creek Livestock Ltd., Gillespie Hereford Ranch, Braun Ranch and XTC Ranches for hosting the tour.

Congratulations to Marilyn, Robin and Carl Ramsay for receiving their 25 year pins from the CHA.

Our deepest sympathy is extended to the Oddan family on the passing of Ellen Oddan.

I had the opportunity in July to attend Bonanza and the Canadian Hereford Association Annual General Meeting at Abbotsford, B.C. Hats off the to organizing committee for organizing such a great event and our thoughts go out to those effected by the wild fires. While there, I attended the National Show Committee meeting along with the National Marketing Committee meeting. The Marketing Committee hosted two speakers, Doug Blair, Founder of Alta Genetics and partner in Rocky Mountain Holsteins who spoke on Creating Relationships: The Value of Customer Service and Katie Songer, Owner of Top Stock Magazine and partner in Lucky Springs Farms spoke on Electric Marketing: Marketing Using Social Media and Other online Tools. It was a very imformative workshop

Until next time.

SHA President’s Report - Stephen Myer

Well fall is pretty much upon us in Saskatchewan. Leaves are turning, birds are migrating, and farmers and ranchers are getting the work done as quickly as possible. It was a summer of well attended Hereford events. We have some variation in where folks are at with harvest/fall activities. Fall sale catalogues have started to arrive in the mail or go up online and if you're planning to show or attend shows you've probably started to make a plan. We also seem to be at a time of tax changes as the federal government has proposed changes for small businesses and private corporations. I hope you, as a Hereford producer/enthusiast, had time to tour or take in some of the events this past summer. We had a terrific showing of Hereford genetics at both our annual field days. The North West Field Day was held on August 3 rd at Turtleford, SK along with the NW Hereford Club's 45 th Honor Roll Inductions. Congrats to the show winners from the jackpot and people's choice divisions: Big Gully Farm, Manchester Polled Herefords, Standard Hill Livestock, Top 50 Livestock, Lock Farms Ltd. I enjoy helping out and competing in the field day every year. The South East Field Day was hosted by Square D Polled Herefords on August 5 th. I was able to make a whirlwind trip down to take in the event, and I always enjoy how the format gets the crowd involved. Thanks to Jim, Lori and Julia for the hospitality. Congrats to champions: Glenlees Farms and Haroldsons Polled Herefords. A big thank you goes out to the volunteers and sponsors for making these shows successful. Shortly after the field days, on August 10 th & 11th, there was a Hereford tour in South Western Saskatchewan put on by a group of local breeders. Regrettably I was not able to attend, but all reports are that the group did a great job hosting a tremendous crowd of people. No doubt business will be done and relationships made from the experience. I look forward to more tours in the future. In my recent travels from home, in the northwest, to Regina and Maple Creek, it's almost like two different worlds. Here we were wet pretty much all spring and summer, although we did have a decent window to do some forage crop harvesting, whereas much of the province to the south was in a drought. From Saskatoon south I did not see much crop left to harvest while farmers around Battleford and Meadow Lake are definitely in need of a long fall. I've had producers tell me they only had half a crop to harvest but it's done, and many with more than half of a favourable crop still laying in the field. Whatever the case where you are I hope you can make the most of your 2017 production. Using the field days as a guide, I would say we are in for a very strong showing of Hereford genetics at this fall's sales and shows. Lately I have started to see some new people entering the business and advertising their operations, which is great to see. The Hereford breed has a lot to offer the beef industry and I encourage everyone to cull hard and put effort into improving performance and practical traits in your herd. With the number of Hereford cattle offered for sale and shown in Saskatchewan you can be sure to find your next breeding tool. I don't proclaim to know a great deal about politics, but I hear that the proposed changes to small business tax laws that our federal government are proposing could have huge impact on family farms and other small corporations, including doctors. I think it's a little concerning and I encourage you to educate yourself or talk to a professional about the changes that are proposed. There is a House of Commons E-petition (E-1239) that you can sign online up until December 22, and contact your MP with your opinions as soon as possible.

North West Saskatchewan Hereford Club 45th Annual Honor Roll For the past 45 years, the North West Saskatchewan Hereford Club have honoured purebred and commercial producers for their continued support of the Hereford breed. In 2009, they included the Young Gun Award to recognize youthful dedication and excellence within the breeders of the North West Sask Hereford Club. Following are this year's recipients.

Breeder of the Year - Misty Valley Farms

Stephen Myer, Jesse Banneman & Maurice Oddan

Misty Valley Farms hosted their 40th annual production sale in February 2016. This accomplishment is one that few operations have/or will ever see. They have sold 1,200 plus bulls and more than 1,500 females. Return customers are their bread and butter, and for many years have sold genetics across Canada. They have resgistered Herefords since 1956 and currently calve over 600 cows. We are fortunate to have such great cattle people in the Oddan's within our zone and wish them many more year's success.

Purebred Honourees - Misty Meadow Farms Robert & Marian Deschamps Ken Bowler Wayne & Linda Spence Robert and Marian Deschamps started Misty Meadows Farms in 1953. It was like any other family farm at the time. In 1957, they hired Ken Bowler to do some custom baling. He came back the next year as well and a partnership was formed. Hereford bulls were purchased from Thodes and Zacharias Brothers. In 1967, they purchased their first purebred females and started in the purebred business. Everyone worked hard cutting hay with mowers, baling, hauling and stacking square bales. Once the purebred herd was established, the better bull calves were kept on feed and sold as two year olds. Battleford Bull Sale and the June sale in Saskatoon were highlights of the year. Living in the very southern end of the NW zone didn't allow for much visiting with other breeders so these sales afforded the opportunity to enjoy the company. The farm kept every calf on feed and ROP became an important tool. Many bull calves were taken to the test stations in Saskatoon and Regina. The farm was very proud of the many highest gaining sire group awards over the years. Linda Dechamps and Wayne Spence married in 1973 and moved to the farm in 1977. They were fortunate to purchase the quarter north of the home quarter. This allowed them to work together with Linda's folks, and for their children to grow up with lots of family. 16 16

Because bull buyers in the area demanded it, the herd was gradually changed from horned to polled. By the early 80's, Wayne and Linda started to show in the summer and fall. This was a great way to get to know other breeders better and it was something they enjoyed doing as a family. Wayne and Linda were also leaders of the local 4-H club so the skills learned in the purebred business helped them work with the 4-H members. Improving the genetics base of the herd was important so Linda took and AI course. With both Linda and Wayne teaching school AIing proved a challenge but the results were worth it. Once the girls were old enough to work on the cattle they became members of the junior Hereford association and attended Bonanzas every year. Many families go to the lake or on vacation but Bonanzas were their vacation every year. Over the years, they have had may enjoyable times. A special Bonanza was when their oldest daughter Kirsten was co-chair with Mark Oddan and Ben Fox at Bonanza '98 in Lloydminster. The parent committee was fantastic to work with. Hosting the NW zone field day when it was held in Perdue was a great opportunity to be involved in zone activities. Robert became ill and passed away in 2004 and Ken passed away in 2015. Marian still lives in her home on the farm. The Spence's still have a few cows at home and appreciate Kurtis and David Reid for leasing some purebred cows and being able to keep in touch with the industry.

2017 Young Gun Award Connor Creech – Hill 70 Quantock Ranch In recognition of youthful dedication and excellence within the breeders of the North West Saskatchewan Hereford Club Connor Creech was born May of 1992. Connor, along with his dad Bill, brother Ted own and operate Hill 70 Quantock Ranch Ltd. They operate out of three locations – Lloydminster, AB/SK, Edgerton, AB and as of spring 2017 they were able to expand to Paynton, Sk with the purchase of Don and Marie Ferguson's ranch. Jesse Bannerman, Stephen Myer & Connor Creech Cattle Call - October 2017 Cattle Call - October 2017

The Creech's run a cowherd of approximately 650 calving cows, all of which are purebred and registered, and host an annual bull sale the first Saturday of February. They annually merchandise 400 bulls, including approximately 60 horned and polled Herefords, with a focus on raising cattle specifically designed for success in the commercial sector. Having involvement with six other breeds has given Connor an opportunity to compare and contrast strengths and weaknesses

across the breeds and gain appreciation for what Herefords are capable of offering an operation. As they move forward with their program they will look increasingly to genomic data to make breeding and marketing decisions. The Hereford breed has a genuine opportunity to regain market share on the Canadian bull marketplace and Connor looks forward to being involved with the breed and working towards making this happen within their own sale as well as breed-wide.

Bill Roach Named Saskatchewan's 2017 Commercial Producer of the Year Commercial Honourees - Bill Roach – WJR Farms Inc. Bill and his family were also recipients of the NW Sask Hereford Club Honor Roll Bill farms along with his wife Bernie, son Ryan and his wife Alyssa and son Barrett in the Edam, Sk area. He is a third generation producer having two sets of grandparents that homesteaded. Currently the operation runs 450 cows, ninety five percent of which are red/white faced, Hereford/Simmental cross. The family emigrated from Holland in 1906 and set down roots in Edam, Sk. Bill's father owned the local International Harvester dealership and grew a farm business on the side. For a large amount of Bill's life he farmed grain and cattle with his brother. Bill and Bernie raised five children, three sons and two daughters and the kids moved on to the oilfield, health care and parenting jobs. Bill and his brother split their business in 2008. Just when Bill was thinking of slowing down, his son Ryan decided to move from his pursuits in the commerce world back to farming. Bill's life as a farmer was renewed. Bill and Ryan calve and feed their cows together and have separate pastures so each gets to buy their own bulls. Bill breeds his cows to maintain a consistent calf crop, breeding cows that look more Simmental to Hereford bulls and vice versa. Bill sometimes throws in a third cross of Angus in the mix and Ryan does this more often. They have found cross breeding to be

Cattle CattleCall Call--October October2017 2017

very profitable. Father and son have grown the cow herd to double the size and put emphasis on solid functional cattle, pasture grazing techniques, and the use of corn for silage and grazing. Along with the owned land base, they rent land suitable to be used for pasture. They maintain a small amount of mostly older equipment to keep the costs down, and employ custom operators when necessary. The first Hereford influence cows were purchased in the late 1960's when the Roach's bought out a neighbour. They were among some of the first people in the area to use Simmental cattle. By 1980, they had started to utilize Hereford bulls on the progeny of those continental cattle, first just on heifers, and then seeing the results on cows as well. Bill says they has a partnership with Walter LaClare in which Walter rented their adjoining pasture and the Roach's received the LaClare's top end retired herd bulls. This was crucial to the quality of cattle they had then and now. For many years Bill sold his top end red/white faced heifers to some of the areas reputable cattlemen, but recently he has enjoyed keeping them for himself or Ryan. Bill's cows are pretty much exclusively raised at home while Ryan has purchased cows from retiring area ranchers to grow his herd. Some of Ryan's purchases have been herds that had sourced females from the Roach's. The Hereford influence is maintained is the herd for docility, efficiency, hair and its ability to cross with almost any other breed successfully. Bill says as far as the work, he's done it all, although he says Ryan does most of the work at the ranch now. He has worked in the bank, done maintenance for the town, and has owned and operated a local car wash for some time. He says he's found the good life looking after his cows and he's thankful for his health and the grandkids that fill up albums on his smart phone. While other people find peace at the lake, he finds it going to check pastures.

cattle chat NEWS & VIEWS

Producers urged to sell earlier this year Alberta packers were buying fed cattle in the range of $159 to $163 in late June, down from highs during the first week of May of $197. The market has come under pressure as market supplies build on both sides of the border and carcass weights increase. U.S. cattle-on-feed numbers reached a historical high on June; placements have sharply exceeded year-ago levels over the past three months. Large feedlot inventories have confirmed that beef production will reach burdensome levels in the third quarter. Wholesale beef prices have also dropped from the May highs with the larger beef production coming on stream. Beef demand has been bolstered by a strong overall economy. Robust consumer spending has enhanced beef consumption. Feedlot inventories are at 10-year highs. Earlier in spring, carcass weights were declining. The live cattle futures were trading at sharp discount to the cash, causing feedlots to be extremely aggressive on marketings. This caused beef production to come in lower than anticipated in the second quarter. We’ve now seen the tide turn. Marketing weights are increasing but one positive aspect is that feeding margins remain favourable. Despite the feedlots remain current with production. Cattle on feed in Alberta and Saskatchewan as of June 1 were 881,445 head, up five per cent from June 1 of 2016. Placements during May were 121,548 head, up a whopping 165 per cent from last year. Most of the placements were under 800 pounds so the bulk of these placements will come on the market in the fourth quarter. Looking forward, the surge in U.S. third-quarter beef production will have two major implications for the Canadian market. First, exports to the U.S. of slaughter steers and heifers will drop to a trickle. Secondly, exports of wholesale beef will also slow down. This means that additional beef supplies will have to be absorbed in the Canadian domestic market or priced into other offshore destinations. Alberta fed cattle basis levels will likely deteriorate in the latter half of 2017. I’m somewhat bearish on the fed cattle market into the third and fourth quarters. The price outlook is shaping up to be similar to 2015. Western Canadian feedlot margins have ranged from $200 to $300 per head in June. Feedlot operators bid up the price of

36 36

feeder cattle until margins are at break-even and it now looks like margins in the fourth quarter will drop into negative territory. Feeder cattle prices are expected to trade sideways through the summer and fall. However, the market will likely trend lower in November and December. Cow-calf producers will want to be aggressive with their fall marketings. Sell earlier rather than later. Western Canadian barley prices are expected to strengthen by $30/mt to $40/mt next winter, which will add about $50 to $60 per head of input costs. Feedlots will calculate their feeder purchase accordingly. We’ve seen a very unique market structure in the first half of 2017. Basis levels for fed and feeder cattle have been abnormally strong for an extended period. This will not continue because feedlot inventories are too high. Readers who recall my articles from last winter know that producers want to sell a strong basis. I want to remind producers that weekly updates on the feeder cattle market can be found every Tuesday on the agcanada.com website. I enjoy the feedback and phone calls, but visiting the website may be helpful for short term marketing decisions. By: Jerry Klassen

Livestock premises ID participation strengthens Canadian Agriculture The Canadian Food Inspection Agency is considering changes to the Health of Animals Regulations for livestock traceability, the agency announced during PremisesIDWeek July 26, a federal release says. The changes would require all Canadian operators of premises where livestock may be loaded or unloaded from a vehicle to have a valid premises identification number for each site, and to report the number when receiving livestock. The five Canadian provinces with mandatory premises identification are Prince Edward Island, Quebec, Manitoba, Saskatchewan and Alberta – but all provinces and territories have systems in place to issue PID numbers. Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada, the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA), provinces and territories, and members of the livestock industry are encouraging producers, farmers and operators in the Canadian livestock supply chain to participate in livestock premises identification.

cattle chat Livestock traceability protects Canada’s livestock industry and the public’s well-being by strengthening the ability to respond quickly to disease outbreaks, food safety issues and natural disasters, the release said. “Knowing where livestock are located and how to contact owners can reduce potential economic, social and environmental impacts to livestock operations,” the release said. Livestock traceability that uses valid premises identification numbers helps the industry to: •Rapidly notify registered livestock stakeholders; •Prepare, manage and reduce the impact of animal health or food safety issues, such as diseases, fires or floods;l •Track and trace animals in the event of an emergency; •Better manage emergencies to help maintain market access. To get a premises identification number, operators need to provide the following information: location of the premises; animal species kept at the premises; the type of agriculture and food operations; and contact information.

Team (PRT) to aid in the reduction of crime in rural Saskatchewan. The new PRT is being created in response to recommendations by the Caucus Committee on Crime (Committee). The new PRT will consist of 258 armed officers who will have arrest and detention powers, and will be comprised of: 20 police officers from RCMP and municipal police services: 60 police positions currently deployed to the Combined Traffic Services Saskatchewan (CTSS) Initiative; 30 new police positions; and 30 re-purposed police positions currently funded by the ministry, will be integrated with, 40 Ministry of Highways Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Officers (CVEO) with expanded powers; and 98 Ministry of Environment Conservation Officers (CO).

Sectors such as poultry have already independently developed systems for collecting traceability information.

All PRT members will receive a comprehensive training curriculum which will be provided to all officers regardless of their designations. PRT expands on the successes of blended policing models to: Improve police response to emergency calls for services, including property crimes that are in progress. Enhance uniform visibility and presence in rural Saskatchewan. Increase the enforcement of drug trafficking on Saskatchewan’s roadways. Enhance the safety of Saskatchewan roads by reducing the number of serious collisions and fatalities.

New or existing premises identification numbers should be shared with livestock traceability administrators, such as the Canadian Cattle Identification Agency or Pig Trace Canada, to initiate or complete registration.

“The security and safety of the people of Saskatchewan is the number one priority of the Ministry of Justice,” Wyant said. “I would like to thank the Caucus Committee on Crime for their thorough efforts in their province-wide consultations.”

Mark Allan retires after 15 years

A total of $5.9 million will be invested in order to support the new group and other recommendations in the report. SGI will provide $4.9 million directly to fund the additional officers and an additional $1 million will come from the Ministry of Justice to address recommendations.

The five Canadian provinces with mandatory premises identification are Prince Edward Island, Quebec, Manitoba, Saskatchewan and Alberta – but all provinces and territories have systems in place to issue PID numbers.

Mark Allan, president and CEO of the Regina Exhibition Association Limited (REAL) — which runs and operates Evraz Place — has announced he will retire next March. Allan has led the non-profit corporation for 15 years. During Allan’s tenure, Evraz Place saw the removal of its race track as well as many legacy buildings. Now described by REAL as “Canada’s largest interconnected, multi-purpose sports, entertainment and business complex,” it includes six linked facilities such as the Queensbury Convention Centre, the Cooperators Centre sports complex and the EventPlex indoor soccer facility. A 150,000 sq. ft. trade centre is set to come on stream in the fall. The search for Allan’s successor will begin immediately.

Government Creates New Entity in Response to Report on Crime Justice Minister and Attorney General Gordon Wyant announced the creation of the new Protection and Response

Cattle CattleCall Call--October October2017 2017

The government has committed to addressing the safety needs of the Saskatchewan people, the proposed plan that enacts the recommendations of the Committee ensures the continued safety of the province’s residents. The Committee’s recommendations also include ensuring RCMP resources and personnel are used effectively in rural areas; reviewing legislation to allow municipalities to jointly administer alternative policing programs; providing more funding for onreserve programming and services; and other measures. The recommendations are the result of consultations the Committee conducted beginning in November 2016. As part of these consultations, the Committee toured 10 communities over 12 days and met with 58 stakeholders. Written submissions were also accepted and reviewed by the Committee.

cattle chat NAFTA Changes U.S., Canada Leaders Say Could Help Beef Trade As the first rounds of negotiations in NAFTA concluded, cattle industry leaders from the U.S. and Canada were happy to see no major upset regarding cattle and beef trade. Still, there are a few improvements U.S. and Canadian producers want to discuss. “There are some small provisions that could be improved, as far as just getting cattle and beef across the border. Any time we can look at a way to take that regulatory burden down, it’s a good thing,” says Colin Woodall, National Cattlemen’s Beef Association, vice president, government affairs. “But for us, we want to make sure the basic provisions that allow the full, unfettered access stay in place. That’s what we are pushing for.” One regulation John Masswohl, Canadian Cattlemen’s Association, director of government and international relations, would like to see change is a rule that live Canadian cattle must be born after March of 1999 in order to be exported to the U.S. Most animals are, but providing documentation of each animal’s birthdate is a burden for many producers. Country of origin labeling is a revolving issue for many U.S. and Canadian producers. “There is always that shadow of COOL [country of origin labeling] and people saying there is a way to bring this back,” Masswohl says. “There are some in the U.S. that will never let that go.” Masswohl calls the measure “discriminatory,” and promises continue pushback if the issue comes up. Woodall adds this is not the time to reopen old discussion about the topic. Moving forward, leaders are confident beef and cattle trade will remain in a good position. “When it comes to provisions regarding beef and cattle trade, we feel pretty comfortable that the Trump administration has the right mindset,” Woodall says. “One thing that always hits me when I’m up here is how similar our industries are, and how similar our membership is,” he adds. “We have many more similarities than we do differences and that helps us work together well.” “For the beef sector, it’s [NAFTA] actually been a very good agreement,” Masswohl adds. “The Canadian, the U.S. and the Mexican beef sectors would all agree with that assessment.”

Cargill, McDonald's & Swiss Chalet to pay producers for beef program particpation McDonald’s, Swiss Chalet and Cargill have committed to funding a pilot project that is designed to pay cattle producers a financial incentive for producing beef that meets verifiable sustainability standards.

38 38

The “Canadian Beef Sustainability Acceleration Project” was soft-launched at the recent Canadian Beef Industry Conference in Calgary. It will begin in October, with the first quarterly payments going out in early 2018. As Deborah Wilson, senior vice president with BIXS, it’s designed to be an opportunity for cow-calf operations, backgrounders and feedlots to get paid for participating in the Verified Beef Production Plus (VBP+) program and tracking animals through BIXS (Beef InfoXchange System). “Cargill spearheaded it. They’re working with groups like BIXS and VBP+ and the Canadian Roundtable for Sustainable Beef. We’re going to be building on the CRSB framework, using VBP+ to audit the operations, and BIXS is going to be tracking chain of custody. So we’re going to track cattle right from the farm, right through to the plant, and even beyond that at times,” she says. “This is going to be backed and funded by McDonald’s, Cargill, and Swiss Chalet. So we’re looking at some financial incentives and credits going back to producers that are operating in that sustainability chain.” Details on what the payments will look like and how much money the funders are committing to the program are not yet public. According to the pilot project website, the amount paid to producers “will vary based on the volume delivered as well as participation from the industry as a whole.” “We’ve been working on that model, because we want to get it right the first time, but I’m just going to toss a number out there — hopefully if a producer had 200 cows, he or she could realize an extra $1000-$1200 in their pocket if the animal comes through a fully sustainable chain,” says Wilson. “That’s just a number I’m tossing out there right now, but that would be my hope, so we’re headed down that path.” The goal is to prove to the beef supply chain, including retail customers, that there’s value tracking animals and how they are raised. “By 2018, the CRSB (verification) framework will be up and running, and we probably have 150 members with the CRSB. A number of them are retailers, like Sobeys, A&W, Milestones, Costco…there are a lot of great retailers that are a part of CRSB. So now it’s to prove that we can actually do this, and the retailers are asking for this because the customers are asking for this.”

Up and down becoming the norm for Canadian beef producers Demand for beef is strong and prices have been good for cowcalf producers, but the market is increasingly volatile. The markets can be a roller-coaster, but one thing is for sure — the Canadian cattle herd is not expanding.

Cattle Call - October 2017 Cattle Call - October 2017

e

cattle chat “Heifer retention numbers are not enough to drive any expansion across Canada,” Brian Perillat, manager/senior analyst with Canfax said at the recent Canadian Beef Industry Conference. Fewer cattle are being shipped south of the border but premium prices here have seen Canadian slaughter go up by 16 per cent, he said. “Local demand has been fairly strong for these cows and that’s what’s driving the cow market,” he said. Last month, the Canadian herd had the biggest weekly slaughter number in seven years. That’s partially due to the addition of Harmony Beef in Balzac. “Despite our cow herd numbers being flat all the time, our slaughter numbers and our plant utilization rates have been very positive and well used,” said Perillat. The packing industry is enjoying good margins, and its demand for cattle is positive for the entire industry. “It’s encouraging them to slaughter a lot of cattle and help work through the supplies,” he said. “They really do support the market.” Even though slaughter is up substantially, beef production only increased by four per cent. That’s because average carcass weights have been as much as 40 pounds less than a year ago, he said. Rising carcass weights have concerned many industry watchers and Perillat noted “a lot of those carcass weights are in fatty trim products — there’s not a lot of value.” Prices have also been swinging widely and there’s been a $700per-cow spread between high and low prices this year, he said. “And I’m not completely sure it’s at max level yet,” said Perillat. Price rallies are nice but also present a challenge. “There is some opportunity there, but when you get too caught up in buying some of these high-priced calves again, when the market turns, it’s a bit of a risk,” he said. Still, prices are historically strong, and things are fairly positive overall. Regional differences Price volatility has also varied by region. Ontario prices are usually stronger than Alberta’s by a few dollars but earlier this year, Alberta had the strongest prices in North America. “Alberta prices were $20 to $25 a hundredweight above Ontario,” said Perillat. Culled cow prices have come down quite a bit since peaking in early June and exports have been fairly strong — although the majority of Canadian cattle are slaughtered at home.

cattle coming to slaughter. “I think there’s a lot of carry-over grass and pretty good subsoil moisture coming into this year,” said Perillat. “We haven’t seen a flush of cows being liquidated by any means, and that’s despite the fact that we are seeing these prices coming down.” The feedlot sector has had to adjust to margin swings, but has continued to be profitable, he said. Fed cattle prices have come down but despite this, feedlots are still doing well, which is supporting the feeder markets. But cow-calf producers have been the big winners for a few years now, and have been more consistently profitable. Hay and feed costs will be up this year, but most of that will be factored into next year’s calf prices, said Perillat.

SWF and SSGA Urge Hunters to Stay on Track As the fall weather moves in, record breaking dry conditions are developing in several areas across the province. This increases the potential risk of fires starting from vehicle use, and the Saskatchewan Wildlife Federation (SWF) and the Saskatchewan Stock Growers Association (SSGA) are requesting hunters take extra precautions this hunting season. “We know that the vast majority of hunters take every step to ensure that they leave nothing but their footprints when they hunt, but these dry conditions warrant added vigilance,” says Darrell Crabbe, Executive Director for the SWF. “We encourage all hunters to take extra precautions this hunting season with the increased risk of fires. These precautions include carrying a fire extinguisher in your vehicle, talking to landowners before going on land, avoiding unnecessary vehicle idling, walking when possible, and staying on existing trails,” adds Chad MacPherson, General Manager for the SSGA. It’s also the time to remind hunters about the importance of getting land owner permission before hunting on their property. “Access to private land is a privilege, not a right, and with privilege comes the duty to act as responsible conservationists and representatives of the hunting community” says Crabbe. Hunters are encouraged to familiarize themselves with Operation Respect, which highlights important relationship between land owners and hunters.

The evaluation may include: . Quality of information shared . Relative comfort level enjoyed by both . Relationship between mentor/mentee . Ongoing quality improvement

What is a Mentor and how can I be involved? Most of us can think of people in our lives, more experienced than ourselves, who taught us something new, offered advise, presented a challenge, initiated friendship, or simply expressed an interest in our development as a person.

42 42

We are looking for support from our breeders in guiding our young people. The time you commit is up to you. Your role is more for answering questions, sharing your knowledge and an opportunity for the mentee to visit your operation. If you cannot support our breeders by being a mentor, we offer opportunities for sponsorship. Just contact the Saskatchewan Hereford Association for further information. If you are interested in participating as a mentor we ask that you contact the Saskatchewan Hereford Association by phone at 306-842-6149 or email us at skhereford@sasktel.net.
