Cattle Call – October 2018

Association News

From the SHA Office

Marilyn Charlton, General Manager

The Saskatchewan Hereford Association held their annual meeting on June 15 at Moose Jaw, Sk. The meeting started with a presentation from Coy Shellenberg on the Verified Beef Program. If you are interested in receiving a copy of the presentation just let me know and I will email it to you. Board elections were held and the following are those elected to serve a three year term: Chad Wilson, Wawota, Sk; Karen Wagner, Maple Creek, Sk; Lyal Heidecker, Middle Lake, Sk; Travis Wasko, Eastend, Sk. Howard Crittenden was elected to serve a three year term as the representative to the Canadian Hereford Association Board. Howard's term will start on January 1, 2019. The association would like to thank Kurtis Reid and Murray Andrews for their service to the Saskatchewan and Canadian Boards respectively. At the meeting, changes to the Red Coat Classic were introduced. The Red Coat has changed from a show to a heifer donation. Glenlees Farms of Arcola, Sk have donated a heifer and tickets will be sold. Full details are found on page 51 of this issue and you can contact the SHA office at anytime to purchase your tickets. Draw will be made after the National Hereford Show at Agribition. Thank you to the Northwest Sask Hereford Club and the Southeast Hereford zone for you hospitality this summer. Once again, two successful field days that profiled breeding programs of many Hereford breeders in our province. Check out page 12, the start of results of these two events. Our deepest sympathy is extended to the following families on the passing of their loved ones. Alain DeCorby, Rocanville, Sk. Jack Gamble, Vanguard, Sk. and Morley Johnston, Gull Lake, Sk.

Congratulations to those members who received membership pins from the Canadian Hereford Association.

SHA President’s Report - Stephen Myer Hello fellow Hereford breeders. I hope the fall season finds you well and that the harvest is decent enough for your pursuits. Its an exciting time of the year to be a cattle breeder, catalogues start to come in the mail again and with that excitement of possible new purchases and the analysis of many diverse breeding programs. Best wishes to all that partake in the fall sale season. At our annual meeting this summer we had a guest speaker from the Saskatchewan Vertified Beef Plus Program. Coy Shellenberg outlined the basis of their new Sustainable Beef Pilot Project that is in conjuntion with Cargil. The goal of the program is sustainability of the beef industry. It recognizes that we as producers need to maintain the trust of our consumers and the public, and the program staff has found that, despite the media's negative stories, generally people want to trust farmers. The current pilot program consists of a simple audit procedure, that basically makes sure you are adhering to the beef animal husbandry code of practises, and opportunity for you to collect $20 per head that crosses the kill floor at Cargil in High River with your CCIA tag in its ear. Similarly, feedlots and slaughter plants will receive this money that is coming from retailers that want quality and assurance of responsible production for their customers. If anyone would like more information feel free to contact Marilyn or myself for Coy's contact information. I would like to thank everyone who took time out of their busy schedules to attend the annual meeting and to interact with their fellow breeders on many different subjects. I would also welcome Travis Wasko of XTC Herefords to our provincial board and thank Kurtis Reid for his service. We look forward to working with Howard Crittenden as our new representative to the Canadian Hereford Association and thanks to outgoing board member Murray Andrews. I was grateful to be able to attend the Canadian Junior Hereford Association Bonanza and the Canadian Hereford Association annual meeting held in Quebec this summer. Congratulations to the organizers for putting on an awesome show and for facilitating successful meetings. There was a great number of entries of both cattle and kids, and the quality individuals of both kinds were very evident. The Canadian Hereford Association has some interesting programs coming up. Be sure to stay tuned to the Hereford Digest and email for pertinent information. A hot topic at the Canadian Hereford Asscociation annual meeting was the Hereford Plus Program. As a representative of our association, I went to the meeting to voice our concerns over the program and to hopefully get more detail as to how it would work and how it would make things better for the breed. I believe without a doubt it is still a work in progress. The fact that there is demand for the F1 cattle that are half Hereford is undeniable. Breeding and creating pedigrees and EPDs for the crossbred cattle beyond the first cross is of lesser value to commercial and Hereford producers. I would like to see a program with a clearer direction and end goal. The Saskatchewan Hereford Association will continue to push for positive changes to this program. Everyone stay safe with your various activities and take time to enjoy some tours of Hereford cattle!

EVENTS NORTH WEST SASKATCHEWAN HEREFORD CLUB 46TH ANNUAL HONOUR ROLL August 2, 2018 - Turtleford Fair Grounds Thank you to this year's honour roll inductees. The following purebred and commercial breeders have been influential to the success of the Hereford industry in North West Saskatchewan.

Purebred Honourees Double J Polled Herefords Rick & Karen Johnston, Maidstone, Sk. Rick grew up on a mixed farm north of Maidstone, rode tractor at twelve and was left to calve the commercial herd on his own at fifteen. Rick has been an active farmer and community volunteer. He played his minor sports in Maidstone, Major Junior and Senior baseball in North Battleford, Western Canadian Junior hockey with the Saskatoon Blades and Intermediate A with Port Alberni, BC. All the while knowing his love of cattle and the land would bring him back to the farm. He bought his first land in 1972 and his first Purebred Polled Hereford cow in 1976. In the years since then, he has shown and sold cattle throughout Canada and the United States and travelled to show and sales meeting cattle folk, building relationships, and promoting not only his cattle but the breed as a whole. He believes in the strengths of the Hereford; the gentle nature, calving ease, milk production and performance. He believes that as cattle producers we are all in the business together, and need to support each other regardless of breed. During his time in the business he had some success selling seedstock and in the show ring. He has show Champions in Lloydminster Stockade Round-Up, Edmonton’s Farmfair International, the Royal Winter Fair, Western Canadian Agribition (9 times champion including Supreme Champion and both Polled Hereford Champion Bull and Female in 2008). That year the Northwest SK Hereford Zone recognized him as their Breeder of the Year. He has enjoyed judging cattle show including 4-H, the Royal Winter Fair, and PEI Old Home Week. He spent six years as a board member of the SK Hereford Association (acting as show chairman at Agribition twice) and six years as a board member of the Canadian Hereford Association, which included serving as the youngest President in its’ history in 1995-1996. Rick’s other volunteer duties: - started coaching hockey at 23, was on the bench for the Midwest Redwings AA Northern Final, the Maidstone Jets Senior A Championship, North Sask River Hockey League Championship, and the St.Walburg Eagles Sask Senior A Championship - umped baseball for many years, mostly as volunteer - managed the Standard Hill Oldtimers for 25 years - volunteered to build and maintain ball fields and hockey rinks - Maidstone Arena Board member for 15 years - Maidstone Jets manager/fundraiser - Maidstone Recreation Board for 9 years - President of local Minor Ball and Hockey - Silver Lake Park Board 30 years and counting

Commercial Honouree Don Farnell Don was born in the Battlefords Union Hospital on March 16th, 1945. For those who don’t want to do the math that makes him 73 years old. He was one of four children born to Gordon and Evelyn Farnell. He had two older brothers and a younger sister. His two brothers are retired and his sister and her husband live in Rocky Mountain House and are still farming there. Don and his wife Sharon are the third generation on the home quarter that his grandfather homesteaded in 1906 in the Sonningdale area. They are still actively farming, running a herd of 65-70 Hereford/Simmental cross cows. You will always find a Horned Hereford in their group of bulls. Don has been actively involved with livestock since the age of twelve when he joined the Sonningdale 4-H club. Through the 4-H program he had a variety of life experiences, from caring for his own livestock to winning an award trip through the 4-H council to the 4-H Conference at the Toronto Royal Winter Fair. He was one of ten members from Saskatchewan to attend. Some of you may recognize the names of the others who were on the trip with him: Noel Skelton, Tom Hougham, and Armand Smith. While in Toronto they attended an NHL game at Maple Leaf Gardens among other activities planned by their hosts. Don was a assistant leader of the Sonningdale 4-H Club for a year. He judged a 4-H Achievement Day for the Monarch Club. Sharon and Don have been married for 48 years this summer. In those years they have been blessed with three children; Shane, Murray, and Sheila. They are all gainfully employed off the farm. Don’s start in Herefords began with the purchase of some heifers at the Red Carpet Sale at the auction mart in Saskatoon. They came from George Larry, Horn Brothers and a few other breeders. He also bought a group of heifers from Albert and Ken Beatch. Genetics were added from sires bought from Bill Pana, Don Mitchell and Sons, Walter LaClare, Misty Valley Farms and Bannerlane Herefords. After trying his luck at the Purebred Hereford business, he decided to go to a commercial herd. While in the cattle business he has met many fine people who are still good friends. Life, farming, and the cattle business have been exceptionally good to us. We cherish the memories we have made and look forward to the memories yet to be made.

2018 Young Guns Award Dustin Garrett – Garrett Ranch Ltd. Hello my name is Dustin Garrett, I have been working with cattle my whole life working on Garrett Ranch LTD. Garrett Ranch was run by my dad, my uncle and my grandpa until my brothers and I got old enough to help out and eventually start working with them. When I was 11 I started 4H and with some of the money from my steers I bought my first Hereford heifer. From there most of my time was spent working on the ranch, breaking and showing 4H steers, and building my cow herd. After I graduated high school I eventually enrolled in Animal Science Technology at Lakeland College Vermilion Campus. I spent my college years building relationships in the cattle industry and eventually landed a summer job working at Deseret Ranches near Raymond AB. I was a pasture rider and helped look after over 5000. After college I started to move back home and bought some of my own land. I continued to build my cow herd by keeping heifers and this winter I bought 3 purebred cows from Jim and Georgine Westgards dispersal sale. I see a big future in Herefords and am looking forward to being part of it.

Cow DNA Project (for THE Participants Only) The CHA has joined the AHA in a Cow DNA Project which strives to increase the genomic information available on material traits. The project requires DNA testing all cows in inventory (that don't already have GE-EPDs) at a reduced cost ($28.80 per sample plus shipping). All samples are taken with Tissue Sampling Units (TSUs), and results include abnormalities and GE-EPDs. Parentage can be added for $5.00. For more details, contact Val at the CHA office. val@hereford.ca Weekly EPDs EPDs are run weekly and published every Monday. New data is extracted every Thursday night at 9:00 pm Calgary time. Depending on whether data is recorded before or after this cut-off, results will be included in the new EPDs published 1218 days later.

Over the past 2 years the Canadian Hereford Association Board of Directors have been developing a new program for the Canadian Hereford Association. This program has been developed to address the following changes in the Canadian beef industry landscape. ● Annual Hereford registrations have remained static and in the last 10 years have fallen behind Simmentals and Charolais. ● New genetic evaluations available from IGS area making cross-breed EPD evaluations available to cattle in 13 different herd books, connecting 14 million pedigrees – this evaluation is even larger than the monstrous American Angus evaluation. ● Global exports of Canadian Hereford genetics is a very important marketplace for some Canadian Hereford breeders, so Hereford cannot have an “open” herdbook like other breeds that have had success with this strategy Hereford Plus is designed to be bold, defy convention and let new customers re-define their definition of Hereford, all while supporting and promoting the use of purebred Hereford genetics. This program is not meant to infringe on the Registered Hereford market but be an addition to the market by increasing recognition of the important role Hereford influence cattle play in the Canadian beef industry. The domestic beef industry is sending a resounding message that across breed evaluations of cattle from multi-breed registries is in high demand; as a top quality, genetic service provider the Canadian Hereford Association can offer those same services for producers looking to use registered purebred Hereford genetics to create an animal that fits their needs and their customer's needs. At this very moment, Hereford cattle are currently being crossed with other breeds and enrolled in similar programs at many other Canadian and American breed associations where their Hereford identity is lost. The role of this program is to maintain their Hereford heritage and promote the use of registered Hereford cattle however the individual sees fit. The Canadian Hereford Association board wishes to keep the association modern by offering programing that attracts new members to the breed, grows junior evolvement with the breed, and grows demand for Hereford genetics in crossbreeding programs; but at the same time protects the heritage of the Purebred Hereford Herdbook. The Hereford Plus program is available now for new registrations of 2018 born Hereford influence calves. Contact the CHA office to get enrolled.

Don't get caught waiting for DNA! If you've got calves to show or sell this fall, collect those DNA samples for any ETs, sires or 'dams of AI sires' right away! Be sure to allow a minimum of 4 weeks at the lab for DNA results. Applications are easily available through your online log-in under “Requests”. You can print these immediately to send with the samples.

CANADIAN HEREFORD ASSOCIATION

Honour Roll Gordon and Howard Crittenden The Canadian Hereford Association congratulates Gordon and Howard Crittenden for their induction into the Canadian Hereford Association's Honour Roll. Gordon was born September 13th, 1953 in the Imperial District of Saskatchewan, followed by younger brother Howard who was born July 13th, 1955. The Crittenden family has been established on the family's homestead since 1912. The homestead started as a mixed farm, from which the original cow herd was sold in 1964. Eight years later, in 1972, Howard and Gordon purchased their first group of cattle to re-establish their cow herd and in 1978 they bought their first group of purebred Herefords.

The Crittenden men are known for their willingness to learn, adapt, and grow. Family plays an important role in their lives and they are proud of their wives, children and grandchildren. Gordon married Shirley (Mooney) in 1981 and they have raised 3 children – Megan, Justine and Spencer. Howard married Sharon (Emigh) in 1977. Together they raised Jim (Kari), Grant (Lindsay) and Kirbie Mosewich (Preston). The Crittenden family now shares their passion for Herefords with Howard's six grandchildren – Paige, Hailey and Larissa, Ryland and Reid, and Wyatt. The Crittendens value community involvement and time spent with good friends in their community. Howard and Gordon support the community's hockey association, the community association, the school board, and the local United Church board. In 2017 they donated 100% of the proceeds from the sale of one of their heifers to the Imperial & District Ambulance, raising over $5,000. The operation has grown and now includes the C5 partnership, which has brought the next generation of Crittenden men into the farm partnership. Jim, Grant and Spencer largely operate the grain farming division while Howard and Gordon maintain the cattle operation. The family now farms over 13,000 acres and breeds more than 200 females annually. The GHC brand is known internationally as a leading producer of superior Polled Hereford genetics, with exports extending to Denmark, Russia, Germany, England, Ireland, Sweden, Australia, New Zealand, Argentina, Uruguay and to numerous U.S. States. GHC Herefords have also been sold into 10 provinces domestically. Semen interests in bulls are have sold to many groups, including Alta Genetics, Western Breeders and Semex. The brothers are good cattlemen, using traditional selection methods and embracing the use of EPDs and carcass data to improve the genetic make up of their herd. The Crittendens hosted a successful bi-annual production sales from 1998 to 2014 and consigned many high sellers to other sales such as Canadian Western Agribition. Howard and Gordon started their first annual spring bull and female sale in 2017. WTK Continental 66F is one example of many great animals that brought success to the partnership's operation. This bull was Junior Champion at Agribition in 1998, Grand Champion at Agribition in 1999 and National Senior Champion Bull at the Western Stock Show in Denver 2000. Howard and Gordon have been proud promoters of the Hereford breed, hosting thousands of guests at numerous provincial field days. In 2012, they hosted the World Hereford Conference tour. They have been proud to be the Canadian Western Agribition Red Coat Classic Chairman for five years. Howard and Gordon have always been huge supporters of youth activities and many GHC females have been successfully exhibited by Canadian Junior Hereford Association members across Canada. Gordon and Howard have both helped many young cattlemen by sharing their knowledge, skills and friendship. They want to pass on the mentorship and support they got when they were young and starting out and they continue this tradition by offering terms at their annual sale. Health Canada plan could harm veterinary drug market, CAHI warns The organization says the department needs to get in step with other countries A Health Canada plan to impose service fees on human and veterinary medicines will keep many treatments for farm and companion animals out of the country, says Jean Szkotnicki, president of the Canadian Animal Health Institute. The Canadian animal health market is 2.5 per cent of the global market and shouldn’t be treated like the human medicine sector, which is 35 times larger, and is helped by subsidized drug prices, she said. “Yet the proposed service fees increases are similar for both the animal and human health businesses, which CAHI and its members do not think is fair. These higher fees will hurt the availability of veterinary drugs in the Canadian market due to the loss of niche products and increased costs for veterinary medicines.” Higher service fees for veterinary drugs will negatively impact the competitiveness of Canadian animal agriculture and the ability to practise sound veterinary medicine, she said. The Health Canada fees are to cover the cost of reviewing veterinary drug submissions and for oversight of product quality such as fabricating, licensing and warehousing. The fees would be increased by 50 per cent over a seven-year period. About 80 to 90 per cent of current veterinary drugs do not meet the sales threshold set by the proposed new service fees for veterinary drug registration and maintenance in the marketplace, she said. CAHI has been talking to Health Canada since the service fee was first proposed last fall. While the department has said it will substantially reduce its proposed fees, they will still “result in smaller market products not being brought to the Canadian market and many existing small market medications would not be economically viable and will no longer be sold,” she said. The service fee is intended to increase competitiveness, innovation and exports, but it will take the veterinary

30

medication industry in the exact opposite direction, she said. “Business would see deteriorated profit margins on new and existing drugs. Increased fees will encourage companies to invest outside of Canada and Canada’s innovative companies, many of which are small, will be unable to afford to have their products approved and sold in Canada.” It would affect both food and companion animal owners, including equine. Also affected would be entrepreneurs in new and small production animal niches ranging from sheep and goats to buffalo. While Health Canada has recognized the extreme negative impact the original service proposal would have had on small veterinary medication manufacturers, the remedy in the latest proposal would still have a very negative impact on small manufacturers, she said. Health Canada also intends to charge a substantial fee for minor use medicines when most other jurisdictions are providing incentives to manufacturers to ensure that licensed products are available to minor species, she said. Canada will be unique in treating these applications as a source of cost recovery fees. Whether companies serve as an importer of foreign medicines or manufacture in Canada, some will be hit with massive increases in licence fees. The department proposes to calculate future services fees on the Consumer Price Index, which isn’t related to Health Canada’s true program costs, she said. The department should recast the proposed fee increases in light of the government’s objectives of increasing competitiveness, reducing unnecessary regulatory burdens, fostering innovation and meeting Canada’s objective of increasing agri-food exports, she said. “It must factor into the analysis the impact and risk of lost products on animal medication users and adjust the definition of small businesses by removing the affiliate provision and reflecting small individual businesses in Canada. As well it should reduce the fees for drug establishment licences and participate in joint reviews with other countries.” Alex Binkley

cattle chat Ag groups continue food guide fight Beef and dairy producers are opposed to Health Canada’s proposed revisions, including front of packaging labelling Proposed revisions to the Canada Food Guide continues to rankle some groups. “The Canada Food Guide is not just about revisions and updates to the food guide, which was necessary. It is about Health Canada’s strategy for healthy eating, which also includes other areas of interest like front of packaging labelling,” said Tom Lynch-Staunton, head of the public engagement division of the Canadian Cattlemen’s Association. The cattlemen’s association questions the emphasis on eating plant-based proteins as opposed to animal-based proteins. “We feel that is unfair because we know proteins are not equivalent. We know there are different nutritional benefits whether it is a plant-based protein or an animal-based protein,” he said. Meat contains saturated fats and the new proposals are advising to cut back on these. Proposed front of package labels could carry warning labels on foods high in saturated fats, sodium and sugar. “Likely whole cuts of beef and other meats will be exempt from this labelling because they are a single-ingredient food,” he said. Ground meats are not considered a single ingredient and could require a nutritional facts panel and a warning on the label. The CCA argues that ground beef is a single ingredient unless other meats or products are added to make sausage or other processed products. The CCA is also not in favour of a proposal to bring sustainable or environmental food choices into the food guide.

hundreds of people attended in-person meetings last year to weigh in on the topic of a national food policy for Canada. The government has compiled that feedback into a report, entitled “What we heard report – A Food Policy for Canada,” which was released this week. According to the report, consultations were “designed to elicit views and perspectives of Canadians and stakeholders on the development of the policy, and on their priorities within four themes: •Increasing access to affordable, nutritious, and safe food; •Improving health and food safety; •Conserving our soil, water and air; and, •Growing more high-quality food.” Respondents identified several priority areas, including food security for northern and remote communities, an emphasis on soil health and water quality, preservation of agricultural land, and support for young and beginning farmers. Early on in the consultation process, it was identified that in order for a national food policy to work, it should be guided by an inclusive vision statement. Drawing on feedback from the National Food Policy Summit, held last June, organizers of the consultation then provided a single draft vision statement to inperson engagement sessions. It reads: The Canadian food system provides a sustainable food supply so that all people in Canada, no matter where they live, have the ability to access a sufficient amount of safe, nutritious, and culturally-appropriate food, that in turn contributes to their health, and that of our environment and our economy.

“It is not that environmental impact is not important. Absolutely, they are important, but the food guide and nutrition of what we should be eating or not eating is so complex. Bringing in one other complexity will mislead people into making bad food choices and sacrifice the nutrition they should be getting,” he said.

While the report does not list specific outcomes, action items, or a timeline for a draft policy, the report does note that the process identified four priorities for the path forward: •The establishment of new governance bodies; •Policy and program coherence; •Access to improved data; and •Distinctions-based approaches to Indigenous food policy.

The CCA has sent letters to the provinces and Health Canada asking the government to formulate a guide that supports a balanced diet with adequate amounts of animal protein. It also said dairy products should continue to have their own category rather than being included in the protein category.

Canada's trans fat ban comes into effect Canada’s ban on artificial trans fats comes into effect this week, one year after the federal government announced it would be ending the use of the artery-clogging fats. The ban specifically prohibits adding partially hydrogenated oils, or PHO’s, to packaged foods and foods sold in restaurants. For years, the oils were used in the production of baked goods because they extended a product’s shelf life. They were also used as frying oil for foods such as french fries. But research has repeatedly shown the fats can raise levels of bad cholesterol in the blood and lower levels of good cholesterol. The high consumption of trans fats is thought to be responsible for thousands of cardiac deaths in Canada every year, according to the Heart and Stroke Foundation. What trans fats essentially do is increase levels of bad cholesterol (LDL cholesterol) and decrease levels of good cholesterol (HDL cholesterol), one dietitian told CTV News. "The result of this is that they clog your blood vessels and an increased risk of heart disease and heart attacks," said Carol Dombrow, a registered dietitian with the foundation, in an interview with CTV News Channel Sunday. "With the ban of trans fats what's being predicted is that we would save 12,000 people having a heart attack over the next 20 years," she said. "So it's very significant." "Pastries and baked goods and commercially produced french fries, artificial dairy and creamers—those kinds of foods contain trans fats," she added, saying that naturally occurring trans fats don't cause the same clogs in blood vessel as artificial ones found in meat and dairy products. "It's going to make a big difference in the health of Canadians," she said. Heart and Stroke have been working with Health Canada since the latter formed the trans-fats task force in 2006. The food industry had been voluntarily phasing out partially hydrogenated oils for years, but the federal government never imposed a ban. Instead, it introduced mandatory trans fat labelling, set voluntary targets for processed foods, and set up a monitoring program to measure industry’s progress toward meeting the voluntary targets. Last year, after years of calls from health advocates for a total ban, Health Canada finally announced it was giving the food industry one year to phase the oils out completely. The ban applies to all packaged foods produced in Canada, as

32

well as imported products, and foods served in food service establishments. Those trans fats that occur naturally in some animal products are not part of the ban.

What we learned from the Canada Beef Quality Audit Canada’s fourth Beef Quality Audit was completed in March 2018, following previous audits in 1995, 1998 and 2010-11. The carcass audit measured the incidence and economic costs of avoidable defects in Canadian slaughter cattle and beef and identified opportunities to avoid these losses. What they did: Mark Klassen, Joyce van Donkersgoed and a team of technicians visited slaughter plants across Canada in the fall of 2016 and winter and spring of 2017. Thousands of cattle and carcasses were examined for a wide variety of possible defects. This column focuses on the most common and costly defects, specifically tag, carcass weight, excess fat and liver abscesses. Tag (hard lumps of mud and manure on the hide) is caused by poor pen conditions, which also has a negative impact on animal welfare and feed efficiency. Tag causes hide damage and might increase the risk of carcass contamination during skinning. When tag is excessive, packing plants need to slow their line speeds and labour costs increase. Excessive fat is expensive to put on through feed, then needs to be trimmed from carcasses and primals to meet retail specifications. Severely abscessed livers are an animal welfare issue, may reduce animal performance and efficiency, and are worthless for rendering or pet food than healthy livers fit for human consumption. What they learned: Compared to the 2010-11 audit, the 201617 audit found twice as many fed cattle with excessive tag (from 15 per cent in 2010-11 to 27 per cent in 2016-17), overfat yield grade 3 carcasses (from 14 per cent to 30 per cent) or one or more active abscesses (from 10 per cent to 19 per cent). Average carcass weights also increased by 58 pounds (steers) and 46 pounds (heifers). The combined costs of tag, weight, yield grade, and liver discounts averaged over $67 per carcass (more than $10 higher than in 2010-11). On the plus side, the percentage of AAA/Prime carcasses increased from 54 to 67 per cent. Why it happened: The rise in carcass defects has received more ag media attention than the reasons behind the increases. These issues are all closely related. Between 2010-11 and 2016-17 Canada’s beef cow herd shrank by 12 per cent and youthful fed cattle slaughter shrank by eight per cent, with beef imports similar in both years. At the same time, Canada’s beef demand

Cattle Call – October 2018

cattle chat more than doubled, particularly for AAA beef. The only way to meet increasing demands for high-quality beef in the face of shrinking cattle supplies is to increase carcass weight by keeping cattle on feed longer. This improves marbling, but also increases carcass size, overall fatness, and the risk of liver abscesses. Tag is largely weather-related, but some feedlots that have moved to extremely low-roughage finishing diets may be using less bedding.

The Beef Research Cluster is funded by the Canadian Beef Cattle Check-Off and Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada with additional contributions from provincial beef industry groups and governments to advance research and technology transfer supporting the Canadian beef industry’s vision to be recognized as a preferred supplier of healthy, high-quality beef, cattle and genetics.

What can Canada’s beef industry do about it? The easy answers all have significant tradeoffs. Rebuilding the cow herd and feeder cattle population is slower and costs more than producing and processing larger cattle and carcasses, particularly when quality grade is a consideration (even if that means collectively eating $67 in discounts). Packers are reluctant to increase carcass discounts because it risks losing cattle to their competitors in Canada or the U.S. We need to adjust to new realities.

As large volumes of cattle make their way to western Canadian auction marts this fall, buyers are having problems finding truckers to haul them.

In time, we may learn why 14 per cent of cattle can achieve both yield grade 1 and AAA or Prime, and why over 65 per cent of fed cattle have healthy livers at slaughter. But what can we do now? Careful cleaning of feedlot pens and roller compacted concrete can help avoid mud holes and tag. Using more bedding will help, if the cattle don’t eat it as a roughage source. Reducing the proportion of grain in the diet might reduce bedding consumption and may reduce (not eliminate) liver abscesses, but it would also reduce feed efficiencies, increase feeding costs and reduce calf prices. Liver abscesses may become an even greater challenge. An eight per cent decline in Canada’s barley acreage between 2010-11 and 2016-17 means that western feedlots are using more wheat, which may increase the risk of rumen acidosis and liver abscesses. Meanwhile, in-feed antimicrobials (like Tylan for liver abscess control) are coming under increasing scrutiny. Future columns will describe new research that will help address these challenges. The Canadian Beef Cattle Check-Off has increased from $1 to $2.50 per head in most provinces, with approximately 75 cents allocated to the Beef Cattle Research Council. Canada’s National Beef Strategy outlined why the check-off increase was needed, and how it would be invested. One goal laid out in the strategy was a 15 per cent increase in beef demand, with the National Beef Quality Audit playing a central role in measuring progress and identifying opportunities for improving consumer satisfaction and confidence. The Beef Quality Audit will be repeated under the third Beef Science Cluster, but Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada has indicated that future audits will not be eligible for Cluster funding after 2023. The increased Canadian Beef Cattle Check-Off will help Canada’s beef industry continue the National Beef Quality audit in the future, without relying on Cluster funding.

Trucker shortage troublesome for Prairie cattle industry

Those problems may get worse in the future, as federal regulations for cattle hauling could possibly change. “I would say it’s worse this year than other years so far, and this is early. We don’t normally run into this problem this quick,” said Rick Wright of Heartland Order Buying Co. at Virden, Man. The trucker shortage is a seasonal issue for the cattle industry. Over the summer there are fewer sales — and fewer cattle sold. Once fall hits, sales pick up and finding truckers to haul cattle becomes more difficult. The trucker shortage isn’t specific to livestock hauling. Industrywide, the numbers of long-haul truck drivers are dwindling yearover-year in North America. A study from the Canadian Trucking Alliance pegged the average age of a Canadian truck driver at 48 and found that by 2024 the country will be short as many as 48,000 drivers. “There definitely are problems with the truck driver shortage, that’s universal. Whether it’s hauling agriculture products or livestock or general freight,” said Susan Ewart, executive director for the Saskatchewan Trucking Association in Regina. Currently, regulations for shipping livestock in Canada under the Health of Animals Act are under review. The main recommendations in regard to cattle are to reduce the maximum time spent straight-hauling, without unloading animals, to 36 hours from 48. “I think one of the areas of concern that we do see, and it would have an effect on the entire industry whether it’s trucking or cattle producers themselves that are either shipping or receiving cattle, is the reduction of hours,” said Brady Stadnicki, policy analyst with the Canadian Cattlemen’s Association. According to Wright, the possible new regulations could cause even more problems for the truck driver shortage. Reducing the amount of hours cattle are allowed to be shipped would require drivers to haul for longer periods and reduce the amount of loads they would be able to ship. The government has gathered feedback on the proposals and it is expected the final recommendations will be released within the next year.

cattle chat Sask Agriculture Associations Join Forces on Strychnine Re-evaluation Saskatchewan’s agricultural associations are joining forces to urge the federal government to extend its consultation period by 30 days on the re-evaluation of strychnine to allow producers an opportunity to submit comments post-harvest. The Pest Management Regulatory Agency issued its proposed reevaluation decision June 29, 2018 with a 90-day consultation period. The Saskatchewan Association of Rural Municipalities (SARM) is working with stakeholders to ensure the voice of rural Saskatchewan is heard. “We understand that strychnine is the most effective way to control gopher infestations,” stated SARM President Ray Orb. “We need adequate time to gather feedback from our agricultural producers because we know first-hand the significant damage gophers can have on crops and livestock without a means of effective control.” The Agricultural Producers Association of Saskatchewan (APAS) is also concerned with the possibility of no longer having access to strychnine as a means for gopher control. “Saskatchewan’s ranchers and farmers are the only sector that would be impacted by the PMRA review,” said Todd Lewis, President of APAS. “The time- period for the consultation is totally unreasonable, given that they are all completely involved in harvest and preparation for winter.” The Saskatchewan Stock Growers Association (SSGA) understands the detrimental effects that producers could face without the use of strychnine. “Right now, producers have no equivalent alternative to strychnine available for controlling Richardson’s Ground Squirrels on their crop and grasslands and they would experience major financial losses from gopher damage if they are not able to use strychnine,” stated Bill Huber, President of SSGA. “An extension to the comment period would allow those most likely to use the gopher-control product strychnine the time to participate in the consultation.” The Saskatchewan Cattlemen’s Association (SCA) is also lending its voice urging the PMRA to consider an extension to the consultation. “This is an important tool for cattle producers especially as dry conditions favour gopher proliferation. Unfortunately, a consult at this time has missed several people as they work to bring in their hay and other crops. An extension would help make sure all are aware of the opportunity to weigh in,” concluded Rick Toney, Chair of SCA.

New President Takes the Reins at SSGA 105th AGM A new president has taken the reins of the Saskatchewan Stock Growers Association (SSGA) with the conclusion of its 105th Annual General Meeting and Convention in Swift Current. “I look forward to serving the membership and working with government,” said newly-elected SSGA president Bill Huber, who had previously served as the First Vice President.

CCA welcomes new General Manager The Canadian Cattlemen's Association (CCA) is pleased to announce David Moss as General Manager. Moss assumes the role from Rob McNabb, who is retiring after 20 years with the CCA.

Canada’s Cattle Herd Sees a Drop of 0.8% The Canadian cattle mid-year inventory dropped by 100,000 head since last year. According to USDA’s lasted mid-year inventory for Canada and the U.S., there are 12,435,000 cattle total in Canada as of July 1, 2018. The total inventory has dropped approximately 0.8% since the same time last year. The beef cow herd accounted for a large portion of the drop with 45,100 fewer beef cows on July 1. There are currently 3,726,000 beef cows. The beef cow inventory is at its lowest mark since 2015 when there were just 3,706,400 cows. In terms of cattle categories beef replacement heifers saw the largest drop in percentage with a decline of 2.7%. At the moment, Canada has 669,900 beef replacement heifers. Most of the beef replacement heifer disappearance can likely be attributed to heifers entering feedlots. There was a 2.7% increase in the “other heifer” category for heifers one year or older, which would predominately be feedlot heifers. Steers one year or older, which would predominately be feedlot and stocker cattle, dropped by 1.3% to 1,529,100 head. The yearling steer total is the lowest mid-year inventory since 1999 when the report started. Calves younger than a year also fell by 1.3%. The total calf inventory was at 3,994,200 head for July 1. Canada saw little change in its bull battery with bull one year or older only falling by 1,000 head to a total of 222,500 bulls. The drop in Canada’s cattle herd comes at a time when drought in the western provinces has forced culling for ranchers in areas like Manitoba. This has resulted in the highest level of cattle imported to Canada from the U.S. in 16 years.

S

SARM, APAS, SSGA, and SCA stand united for farmers and ranchers in rural Saskatchewan in insisting that the consultation be extended to allow time for those affected by the proposed reevaluation to participate. 34

HOST HOTELS IN WEYBURN, SK: RAMADA BY WYNDHAM, CANALTA AND MICROTEL INN & SUITES

Canadian Junior Hereford Association Honour Roll Morgan Millham Morgan if the son of Dr. Carmen Millham and Allison Hunter. He was born in Yorkton, Saskatchewan and attended school in Saskatoon from kindegarten to grade 9. His remaining high school studies were completed at the Lutheran Collegiate Bible Institute in Outlook, Saskatchewan. Morgan is now attending the College of Agriculture at the University of Saskatchewan. A Canadian Junior Hereford Association (CJHA) member for 12 years, Morgan is currently serving on the CJHA National Council Executive as Communications Officer and representing the Saskatchewan juniors. He has served on National Council for four years and has been very involved in CJHA activities and projects, including the Semen Donation project, the CJHA newsletter, 50/50 and Heifer Lottery. Morgan and his family have attended, exhibited and shown at multiple cattle shows throughout the years, including Brandon, Lloydminster, Swift Current, Agribition and other provincial and National Hereford shows. Morgan himself has been showing cattle since he was six years old. Bonanza 2006 in Brandon, Manitoba, was his first cattle event in which Morgan participated. Since then, he has participated in many more and that includes 11 CJHA Bonanzas across Canada. He is actively involved in his provincial beef 4-H clubs as well. He is currently the Vice President of the Saskatoon 4-H Beef Club and has been a member there for the past nine years. At the 2015 Saskatoon 4-H Regional Show, Morgan received Intermediate Champion Showperson honours and his steer was named Reserve Grand Champion. Morgan has also always loved playing sports. He started playing hockey when he was five years old and continued playing until he moved to Outlook. He played football for seven years and was captain of his high school team in grade 12. He also played basketball for five years. Over the past few years, Morgan has worked at Friendship Inn in Saskatoon, serving meals to people in need. In the community of Outlook, he visits residents of seniors homes and he likes to help out his neighbours with odd jobs like delivering meals and painting. One of his favourite places to volunteer in Outlook is Variety Place, which is a care home for people with mental disabilities. Morgan would like to continue with his agricultural studies in order to pusue a career in the livestock industry. Congratulations Morgan from the Saskatchewan Hereford Association where he serves as the Saskatchewan Junior Hereford Association representative on the board.

NEWS → 2018 National Council Fees of $25 are now payable to the Canadian Hereford Association.

→ Congratulations and thank you to all the participants of Bonanza 2018 for making it such a great show. A big thank you to the Bonanza 2018 committee, especially Allison Mastine, Jade Ouellet, and Lissa Leblanc, for organizing such a great show. There were a total of 110 junior members with 140 head of cattle in attendance. Keep a look out for the results from Bonanza in the next ENewsletter and in the Hereford Digest → Congratulations to the winners of the 2018 Heifer Lottery! $560 -Calista Laycraft, AB; Emmit Irvine, ON; Jade Noiseux, QC; Lane Findlater, MB; $1000 - Jade Charlton, SK; Gavin & Callum Bradley, ON; $2000 - Kylee Dixon, SK → The Canadian Junior Hereford Association has, for many years, assisted its members in developing their breeding program through the SEMEN DONATION PROJECT. This program depends on the support of Canadian Hereford breeders to donate semen from top Hereford bulls from across Canada. The CJHA conducts a draw to award donated semen to junior's who nominate their females. By doing this, CJHA members are given the opportunity to improve their own breeding programs by having access to free semen to artificially inseminate their own registered Hereford females from some of the top bulls in the industry as donated by Canadian Hereford breeders.
