MSC DIWA scholars met Cong. Emmeline “Em” Y. Aglipay, the Representative of DIWA Partylist at the 15th Congress set December 9, 2011 at the SAED Audio Visual Room (AVR). Among the colleges in Marinduque, MSC is the only college given a DIWA scholarship. This was the first meeting of the scholars with the young congresswoman since the said Scholarship started. The Congresswoman arrived in MSC with her companions: Bishop Ruel Arevalo of the Aglipayan Church, Captain Oscar
Moreno and Cong. Em’s assistant. Being new, the slots were only limited for few students. There were 18 lucky scholars who together with their parents, gave Cong. Em a warm welcome. Prof. Cecilia Villamin - the organizer and host started the program with a prayer followed by the National Anthem, Marinduque March and MSC Hymn. First, Dr. Homer Montejo (Vice President for Administrative Affairs) gave his opening remarks and message, wherein after, Congresswoman Em gave a very short but inspiring message. One

Congresswoman “EM”… After the program, a meeting was held giving the scholars the chance to ask information about the scholarship and to know Cong. Em much better. “You can call me Em”, said the Congresswoman. First she requested the scholars to introduce themselves too so that she would know them all. “Thank you po mam Em, at sana po marami pang matulungan ang DIWA”, said by one of the parents who was emotional in front of the congresswoman who responded with a smile. “This is my first time na makilala ko ng harapan ang mga scholars and I’m happy na na-aapreciate nila yung tulong”. Cong. Em received gratitude from the heart of the scholars and she ended the meeting saying, “Thank you din sa inyo, mag-aral kayo ng mabuti para maabot n’yo ang mga pangarap n’yo at sana tulungan n’yo rin ang DIWA para marami pang matulungan.” This was a great day for the scholars because they met the beautiful and simple woman behind DIWA party list. As a souvenir, Cong. Em signed the calendars that she gave them and had a group picture taking with all the officials, faculty, scholars and parents.

The achievement tests in English and Mathematics for Academic Year 2011-2012 were administered to all the freshmen students in all campuses of MSC last December 7, 2011. The said achievement tests were administered to assess the students’ learning in their subjects, the Basic English and the College Algebra. The tests are bubble–type wherein the students had to blacken the circles of their chosen answers. Both subjects were composed of 100 items. For English, the test questions were composed of Basic Grammar, Library Information, Reading Comprehension, Vocabulary and Essay Writing while Mathematics includes Real Numbers, Polynomials, Factoring, Rational Expressions, Radicals and
Equations which were all applications of College Algebra. The test questions passed through the Test Committee before they were administered. The Committee was composed of English and Mathematics Teachers from the Main and Satellite Campuses of the College headed by Engr. Daisy T. Malapad (Mathematics) and Dr. Julieta L. Go (English). The examinees were freshmen students who took up English I and College Algebra during the first semester. They were given one and a half hour to take the test in both subjects. The next day December 8, 2011, the answer sheets were separately checked by the Committee at the AVR (Mathematics) and at the Speech Lab (English). - Rochelle Pornela

Boakeños soar high during the Bila-bila Festival 2011

The Bila-bila Street Dancing Festival was held last December 8, 2011 during the town fiesta of Boac in honor of patron saint “Immaculate Conception.” The annual celebration of the Feast day of Immaculate Conception has always been showered with rain. The Bila-bila Festival during the town fiesta was observed to be the grandest celebration this year performed by street dancers from the various barangay clusters of Boac – from the Riverside (Tabi, Lupac, Tabigue, Poras, Buliasnin, Bantad, Pili, Tanza, Maligaya and Balogo), the Seaside A (Santol, Bangbangalon, Caganhao, Ihatub, Laylay, Balaring), the Seaside B (Amoingon, Duyay, Tugos, Bunganay, and Cawit), Ilaya 1 & 3 (Daypay, Apitong, Balimbing, Agumaymayan, Puting Buhangin, Sawi, Puyog, Ogbac, Agot, Tagwak, Boton, Bantay, and Pawa), Ilaya 2 (Maybo, Bamban, Balagasan, Mainit, Daig, Poctoy, Tumapon, Catubugan, and Malbog) and Poblacion (Murallon, San Miguel, Tampus, High town, Mansiwat,

Isok I & II, Malusak, and Mercado). Street dancers and festival drummers in colourful costumes depicted bila-bila or butterflies dancing freely. The said festival was held through the effort of Hon. Roberto J. Madla, the town Mayor. Many people watched the choreographed movements of the participants. The competition was started by a prayer followed by the national anthem. The opening remarks were delivered by Hon. Dante J. Marquez – Vice-Mayor of Boac, followed by Hon. Roberto J. Madla. There were two sets for judging: the Street Dancing and the Performance Proper. The judges were the following: Mr. Bernard Revilla, a Dance Instructor in “Keep on Dancing;” Mr. Enrico Valdez, Assistant Principal of Marinduque Academy; Rev. Fr. Milliemar Perin; a representative of Mr. Dindo Asuncion; Mrs. Laila Lagran, the Provincial Public Information Officer (P.I.O.); and Mr. Roberto Macdon, also a Dance Instructor. The criteria for judging were: Choreography – 25%, Performance –
30%, Concept – 15%, and Production Design – 30% for a total of 100%. The first performer was from the Ilaya 2 District choreographed by Mr. Brian Samarita. The second contingent was from Riverside District choreographed by Mr. Eric Maglacas. The third performer was from the Poblacion District followed by Ilaya 1 and 3 District and the last two performers were from Seaside A and B. The audience had their own bet on who would be the champion in this year’s Bila -bila Festival. All participants did their best during the competition but only three were chosen as the winners. For the Second runner-up who received Php30, 000.00 with an average score of 89.8% was the Riverside District, the First runner-up who received Php50, 000.00 with an average score of 90.33% was the Poblacion District and the Champion with an average score of 94.5% and received Php75, 000.00 was the defending champion, the Seaside B District. - Sarah Semilla & Ma. What Goes in your Mind? By Zaira Camille Maac Have you ever thought why do our parents say that the youths of today act so differently? I’ve thought of that and realized how wild our generation is now. Why do we deal with things not appropriate for us? Those things like premarital sex, having a child at a very young age, drinking alcohol like there’s no more tomorrow, and for some, taking prohibited drugs that can destroy their life. I often think why this happens. What runs in the minds of youths today? Sometimes, I also ask myself, why we spend more time in drinking and hanging out than discussing about our future plans? It seems that the present generation has lost its sense of critical thinking. We tend to ignore things more vital to us. Let me ask you this question: When you read newspapers, do you scan for important news about our country or do you turn it immediately to the entertainment page and scan for the newest joke or a horoscope or much likely the latest showbiz news? We should be socially and academically aware of what happens in our environment. It’s not enough that we know what’s happening with the people around us or knowing the latest discovery in technology or fashion. We should be aware because we are next in line. If we don’t know, it might fall into a black hole of our ignorance.

Have you ever wondered what real Christmas is? Christmas is the annual feast during 25th of December to celebrate the birth of our Lord Jesus Christ. It is the time when envy and hatred are set aside and the world is lit by a warm, forgiving and loving heart. The entire world celebrates the birth of Jesus Christ through different customs and traditions. We Filipinos, as Christians have the longest Christmas celebration that starts December 16 when the first dawn masses are held and ends first Sunday of January of the following year, the Feast of the Three Kings. The decorations such as Christmas trees, lanterns, silver bells, stockings, Christmas lights, and Belen signify that we truly respect and value the Christmas celebration. Attending “Simbang Gabi” or “Misa de Gallo” is one of the traditions of the Filipinos. All Christmas decorations reflect the spirit of the season but is Christmas all about the decorations and gifts? The spirit of Christmas is more felt than visible to the eyes. The decorations of the season reflect the spirit of the season but the actual joy is felt within our hearts. Everyone has his own way of celebrating Christmas but what matters most is Jesus our Saviour gives joy and merriment to all people. There's no other holiday like Christmas. Many of us celebrate the holidays without knowing how our traditions got started or what they signify. Christmas is much more fun when you know some facts behind the holiday. Most of these facts are very interesting and remind us that there is quite a bit of history behind our family customs. Try using the trivia to make your own Christmas quiz for holiday parties and add a unique touch with personal favorites.
The word Christmas is Old English, a contraction of Christ's Mass. The first president to decorate the white house Christmas tree in the United States was Franklin Pierce. Germany made the first artificial Christmas trees. They were made of goose feathers and dyed green. Electric lights for trees were first used in 1895. The first Christmas cards were vintage and invented in 1843, the Victorian Era. "It's a Wonderful Life" appears on TV more often than any other holiday movies. Rudolph" was actually created by Montgomery Ward in the late 1930's for a holiday promotion. The rest is history. The Nutcracker" is the most famous Christmas ballet. Jingle Bells" was first written for Thanksgiving and then became one of the most popular Christmas songs. If you received all of the gifts in the song "The Twelve Days of Christmas," you would receive 364 gifts. The poinsettia plant was brought into the United States from Mexico by Joel Poinsett in the early 1800's. Holly berries are poisonous. Contrary to common belief, poinsettia plants are non-toxic. Mistletoe was chosen as Oklahoma's state flower in 1893 and later changed to the state floral emblem. In 1843, "A Christmas Carol" was written by Charles Dickens in just six weeks. The first state to recognize the Christmas holiday officially was Alabama. Christmas became a national holiday in America on June, 26, 1870. An angel told Mary she was going to have a baby. Black Friday is not the busiest shopping day of the year. Although it varies, it usually lands sometime in December. Clearing up a common misconception, in Greek, X means Christ. That is where the word "X-Mas" comes from not because someone took the "Christ" out of Christmas. Traditionally, Christmas trees are taken down after Epiphany. More diamonds are sold around Christmas than any other time of the year. In Mexico, wearing red underwear on New Year's Eve is said to bring new love in the upcoming year. LA Galaxy beats up Philippine Azkals LA Galaxy, one of the famous football teams in North America turned down Philippine Azkals in its hometown, in a friendly match held in Rizal Memorial Stadium, Marikina City, Manila, Philippines last December 3, 2011 with the score of 6 – 1. Almost 10, 000 people showed up to witness the much-awaited game between the Azkals and the Galaxy. This is a dream come true for the Azkals to play with the LA Galaxy star player, David Beckham. Beckham started the scoring with a typical kick which defeated the goalkeeper of the Azkals during the first 20 minutes of the game. After another 8 minutes, another goal for Galaxy when Mike Magee took a way to goal. But a few minutes after, Azkals’ star player Phil Younghusband made a shot for their first goal. One point for the Philippine team. Before a substitution after the half-time, Beckham went to have his hat tricks assist to Robbie Keanne which gave another score to Galaxy, another score was gained by Adam Christman. On the second half of the game, Jason De Jong pushed on to score again through the penalty of Gregg Berhatter of the Azkals and then Adam Christman grabbed his second goal which made the Galaxy win. Both teams enjoyed the game. The score did not reflect the game as what Beckham said. He also acknowledged the hospitality of the Filipinos and the Azkals’ good potential in playing football. On the other hand, the Azkals were very happy and inspired even though they did not win. It was a great experience because they were also avid fans of the Galaxy from the very start. Members of each team enjoyed each other’s company after the game, they even exchanged jersey t-shirts. LA Galaxy left on December 4, 2011 to Australia for the last way of their Asian tour.
