Catalyst Fall 2024-25 Booklet

Page 1

The content in this program booklet has been written by students in the Catalyst Project as an introduction to their work.

What is the

Catalyst project?

There is plenty that sets an SAS high school education apart from that of other international schools, and certainly, from that of other US high schools. One of the most notable is the Catalyst project, an in-depth personalized learning experience.

The Catalyst project is a cultural as well as instructional self-study project where students work with a mentor on a self-directed learning experience. Each project is aimed at a specific and strategic, measurable, attainable, results-oriented, and time-bound goal. Students demonstrate their competency in the Catalyst project’s standards, centered around character, collaboration, communication, creativity, critical thinking, and cultural competence, also known as the school’s learning aspirations, in addition to self-awareness and application.

According to the latest research in education, learning is at its greatest, most relevant, and most meaningful when it is student-initiated and student-led. Ask adults today what they remember learning in high school, and their answer will often involve a learning opportunity where they were able to dive deep into an area of interest, often applying what they were learning in an authentic context. Colleges also recognize students who have the opportunity to dive deep, overcome challenges, and find meaning in their learning as stronger candidates for admission and success in college. This reality is the foundation and rationale for the Catalyst project course.

This innovative and engaging approach to education challenges high school juniors and seniors to embark upon a culminating final project in an area of their particular passion and interest.

Similar to other academic offerings, the Catalyst project course includes a set of desired learning outcomes. The objective of the course is to harness students’ core knowledge, develop their character, and hone their skills in collaboration, communication, creativity and innovation, critical thinking, and cultural competence. All these values will help ensure success when they go on to pursue bachelor’s degrees at colleges and universities all over the world and in life beyond.

The Catalyst project gives students the opportunity to pursue their own paths of exploration in an academic setting, while demonstrating their readiness for university learning to the fullest extent of their enthusiasm, autonomy, capacity, and complexity. A student may conduct university laboratory research into autoimmunity treatment, or establish their own cosmetics company. They might want to conduct an extended service learning project, or perhaps spend a semester as an intern in a working art studio. There are no limits to what a student can do in Catalyst.

The Catalyst Project is a rite of passage for every SAS High School Student to take in their Senior or Junior year. Ultimately, Catalyst represents a formidable feature of the SAS high school education, one that sets SAS high school graduates apart, differentiates them from their peers across the globe, and proves their unique abilities, capacity for excellence, and readiness for achievement at the university level.

Elevated Growth: Transforming Walls into Sustainable Farms

From Idea to Income: Launching My Graphic T-Shirts

In the Pause: A Dance Film About the Silent Struggles of Mental Health

Growing My Spotify Viewership with the Help of Social Media!

Due to Singapore’s limited land resources, over 90% of the food on our plates is imported, which is neither secure nor sustainable. For my project, I addressed this issue by combining my interest in engineering with the principle: if you can’t grow outward, grow upward. Over several months, I used the design-thinking process to develop an efficient modular vertical farming system that can be attached to unused building walls. I hope this initial design evolves into a viable solution that helps Singapore achieve its 30-by-30 food security goal.

Imagine turning simple artistic ideas into a thriving online business. My presentation explores how to start a graphic design T-shirt business, covering everything from design creation to online marketing strategies. This presentation delves into the entrepreneurial process, the challenges, and the successes of launching a single T-shirt.

Whether your interest lies in e-commerce, brand development, or the creative potential of fashion, this project offers valuable insights.

In fleeting moments, when the mind races through tangled thoughts or drifts blankly, this film captures those unfiltered, vulnerable experiences. The project focuses on raising awareness about mental health challenges and the toll stress takes on everyday life. Through expressive, movement-driven storytelling, it sheds light on emotional struggles. This initiative deepens my understanding of mental health advocacy, storytelling through dance, and the power of visual arts to foster empathy within the SAS community and beyond.

The old days of promoting music by handing out CDs are over! Social media has become a turning point, helping businesses, coaches, and musicians grow their platforms by creating engaging content on apps like TikTok and Instagram. For my project, I’ll work to grow my Spotify page within one month by harnessing the power of TikTok and Instagram.

Who

Wants to Create an Enterprise?

It has been my dream to build an enterprise, but I have not had access to anyone who could offer practical advice. For my project, I sought to understand what it takes to launch an entrepreneurship. Through a handbook, I present the perspectives of a range of first-time entrepreneurs. Interviews have given me clarity about the enabling factors and obstacles that are part of the entrepreneurial journey. SWOT factors uncovered during the research are shared to help better prepare others for their own journeys.

Noodle Sense: Grace’s Guide to Healthier Instant Picks

To showcase my interest in both food science and graphic design, I created a guide booklet for instant noodles using Adobe InDesign. Instant noodles are not only easy to make but are also enjoyed by people worldwide. My guide includes nutritional information on various instant noodles, healthy toppings I recommend, and creative recipes. As I prepare to live independently in college, this booklet will help me create healthy instant noodle combinations. I hope to inspire my audience to enjoy instant noodles in healthier ways with this guide.

Skin issues, especially acne, are a major concern, affecting about 90% of adolescents. My own struggles with acne inspired me to explore the role of diet in skin health. Student interviews revealed that many high schoolers were unaware of diet’s effects on acne, prompting me to research specific foods and their ingredients. I synthesized this research into educational content on an Instagram account aimed at SAS students and teenagers globally.

Movie Recommendation Tool

You want to watch a movie, but don’t know which one? Does this sound familiar? You know there must be a perfect movie out there for you, but what is it? This is the problem I wanted to tackle. I love watching movies and wanted to share that passion with others. I created a list of movies I’ve seen and personally recommend, designing a website that allows you to narrow down that list to find the perfect movie to match your preferences.

Dust and Devotion: Dance Through the Camera’s Eye

Dance at SAS has been confined to a narrow perspective, often limiting students’ creativity and freedom. For my Catalyst project, I choreographed a dance for a group of SAS dancers, creating a fun and less-stilted environment for learning. I also used this piece to experiment with filming techniques, playing with camera angles and perspectives to produce a visually engaging final project. The result is a piece that breaks away from the conventional performances often seen at this school, offering something fresh and innovative.

Street Lens: A Photographic Journey Exploring the Nuances of Urban Life

Turning Motion into Command: The Journey of Building an AI-Driven Quadcopter Drone

In an age where digital screens often blur the nuances of real life, Street Lens reclaims authenticity by capturing the raw essence of urban life through human presence and landscapes. This photography book reflects a journey through cities like Tokyo, Paris, New York, and Singapore, where every corner, shadow, and detail tells a story of identity, culture, and the beauty of everyday life. Each image, paired with brief reflections, draws viewers into the quiet moments and hidden narratives that shape urban life. Through Street Lens, I invite others to pause, observe, and embrace the complexities of identity and place.

Driven by a passion for robotics and aerospace engineering, I designed and built a quadcopter equipped with computer vision to respond intelligently to physical gestures. This project gave me hands-on experience in every phase of the engineering process, from concept development to final implementation. Documenting each step, I shared my journey on YouTube to inspire others to explore AI-driven engineering and innovation.

Was It Worth It?: Video Project on Volleyball

My video project focuses on my experiences and stories as a volleyball player. I wanted to create an honest video showcasing the struggles I’ve faced in the sport. Targeted at athletes in Singapore, the project sheds light on the difficulties of playing volleyball in the country, particularly the lack of support it receives compared to other sports. My goal is to advocate for better recognition of volleyball and inspire others to avoid the mistakes I made.

Peak Performance, Prime Care: Cultivating Injury Resilience

By combining a dynamic approach to empowering young athletes with essential first-aid skills and creating a digital platform for injury recovery, my grassroots organization aims to redefine the concept of being “sidelined” in sports. In a demanding environment, young athletes often prioritize performance over recovery, increasing the risk of injury. This initiative bridges the gap between physical readiness and health literacy by equipping athletes with emergency skills and knowledge to reduce injury risks. It fosters a safer athletic environment and enhances well-being at all levels, promoting a balanced approach to sports and recovery.

Colorful Connections: Boosting Elder Mental Health with Rubik’s Cubes

Speed Unlocked: Elevating Sprint Performance Through Science and Social Media

Research shows solving a Rubik’s Cube can improve cognitive abilities and memory. My project aims to help elders with dementia by teaching them to solve Rubik’s Cubes. The cube fosters cognitive engagement and finger dexterity, providing a unique tool to slow dementia’s onset. As someone deeply invested in solving Rubik’s Cubes, I saw an opportunity to use this skill for good. By teaching elders to solve the cube, I hope to promote mental activity and improve their quality of life.

What if your next sprint could be faster, stronger, and injury-free—all through verified advice on TikTok? My Catalyst project tackles this by sharing science-backed workouts, nutrition plans, and recovery tips tailored for 100m and 200m sprinters. By diving deep into biomechanics at the gym and track, diet, and recovery, I aim to make training insights accessible and engaging for athletes worldwide. Mentored by Dr. Bond, I’ve learned to craft safe and effective exercises for various skill levels, emphasizing evidence-based practices that help athletes maximize their potential and improve performance through TikTok.

With easyto-follow recipes and wholesome ingredients, these treats are designed to keep you energized and satisfied. Whether you need a quick study snack or a guilt-free dessert, these recipes make it easier to enjoy the foods you love while staying aligned with your healthy eating goals.

Savor the City: Singapore’s Tastiest PocketFriendly Eats

In a city rich in flavor and culture, many teens turn to mainstream chains for affordable meals. My TikTok project bridges the gap between local culture and teens’ limited budgets. Through engaging videos, I explore hidden culinary gems and inspire others to discover the city’s lesserknown dining treasures. Let’s step outside our comfort zones and uncover Singapore’s best-kept secrets.

Applying AI to a Medieval Game

Girls on Goal

Since I was young, I’ve been naturally drawn to chess, a game with roots as far back as the Persian Empire. Chess is an art of ingenuity and creative problem-solving—fun, engaging, and skill-building. For my Catalyst project, I’m reviving this passion with new technology. I’ll document my one-month preparation for a chess tournament, using AI coaching to help me improve. My goal is to play at my peak potential and advance my chess skills.

I am a senior varsity soccer player with a vision to inspire young girls facing challenging paths. My project partners with Pertapis, a Singapore organization, to bring the joy and discipline of soccer to underprivileged Muslim girls who have experienced hardships like abuse, abandonment, or incarceration. Through this initiative, soccer becomes more than a game—it’s a tool for building confidence, resilience, and community. With your help, I can expand this program, creating a supportive space where these girls can discover their potential both on the field and in life.

The Contorted Chronicles: A Journey Through the Curved Landscape of Life

What if the defining chapter of your life is a curveball you never anticipated? At 12, I learned my spine had its own narrative—a tale marked by unexpected turns, resilience, and the quest for strength as I navigated scoliosis. Through humor, frustration, and vulnerability, I recount my journey with braces, countless doctor visits, and the uncertainty about my body’s future. Whether you’ve faced medical hurdles or seek a story of perseverance, this narrative offers a glimpse into the emotional and physical realities of scoliosis, the choices we face, and the strength that emerges along the way.

Personal Treasures: Affordable Jewelry That Reflects Your True Self

Have you ever struggled to find jewelry in Singapore that truly reflects your personality without breaking the bank? My Catalyst project aims to create affordable, meaningful jewelry for people in Singapore. By hand-carving silver and experimenting with various tools, I’m crafting pieces that capture personality and allow for self-expression. By focusing on jewelry that is accessible, unique, and affordable, I hope to design pieces that resonate with the diverse tastes of different people.

Healing Through Art: Helping Console People Through My Passion for Painting 3D Miniatures

SportsConnect: Navigating Singapore’s Sports Scene

Starting high school can feel intimidating, especially for students wanting to try out for sports and compete against older, more experienced players. Stepping into a new dynamic with upperclassmen and new coaches can feel daunting. My podcast, The Playbook, is designed for incoming high schoolers interested in sports. Featuring coaches and experienced athletes, the podcast offers insights into the ins and outs of various sports. It helps freshmen understand what they need to bring to the table and what to expect, equipping them to confidently step into their chosen sport.

Like many students, life after high school feels like a mystery, and I’ve struggled with decisions that seemed life-defining. Talking to professionals who embodied my career aspirations gave me clarity, inspiration, and practical insights into the realities of various career paths. This inspired me to find ways to connect students with mentors. Initially, I aimed to help underprivileged students but later focused on boosting student engagement at the SAS career fair. For my project, I’ve worked with leaders to organize a career fair that provides student insights and strategies to attract participants and ensure they benefit meaningfully.

Growing up, I always had my dog to keep me company—listening, watching, and being there for me on my worst days. However, I’ve never experienced the loss of such a pet. With this project, I aim to help people find closure after losing their pets by creating a model to remember them by. I’m embarking on a journey with family and friends to revisit these memories and help heal emotional wounds. This journey is one of exploration, grief, discovery, and mourning. Join me on this quest for healing and remembrance.

This project presents an online app designed to help users discover and access sports facilities across Singapore. By utilizing real-time data and user preferences, the app enables individuals to easily find nearby sports venues, from gyms and courts to sports arenas. Animating to Remember the Meaning of Art

Threading Together: Unite in One Spirit with Scarves Breaking Barriers

I was only 12 when I started my first business, sewing scrunchies in my shared bunk bedroom. I photographed them using my mom’s iPhone 7 and uploaded the images onto Instagram. Since then, I’ve developed an interest in business and economics. My project presents a red scarf with “SAS” and its logo embroidered on one tip, along with the option to customize your name on the other. Imagine a scarf that isn’t just fashionable but also wraps you in school spirit.

MidJourney, Stable Diffusion, and DALL-E are just a few examples of AI image generators gaining popularity in recent years. While it’s undoubtedly fascinating to create an image with just a few words, this power comes at a cost—the loss of understanding what it means to truly create art. For my catalyst project, I took on the challenge of learning animation to create a video that delivers a message about the issues arising from the growth of AI image-generating tools.

Teen addiction is a complex issue, affecting areas like social media, gaming, and substance use. This project goes beyond the surface to explore why breaking free is so challenging, pulling from the latest research, firsthand stories, and valuable resources. Our mission is to create a safe, inclusive space where teens feel genuinely heard and supported. We aim to start open, honest conversations about addiction, uncover the unique challenges teens face today, and offer tools that empower them to take control. Together, we can build a community that values resilience, understanding, and support for one another.

The Art of Transformation: A Journey into Plastic Surgery

Cutting people’s faces and body parts may not appeal to everyone, but I’ve remained fascinated by the art and precision of plastic surgery— especially the intricate processes of restoring and reshaping the human body. As part of my project, I immersed myself in this field through an internship with professional plastic surgeons at a private clinic. I learned essential suturing techniques and observed real-life surgeries, gaining hands-on experience in both aesthetic and reconstructive procedures. These opportunities have helped me develop important skills and deepen my knowledge, with my ultimate goal of becoming a skilled plastic surgeon.

Outwit, Outplay, Outlearn: Applying Survivor to Game Theory Education

Watching Survivor every day with my family sparked a lifelong interest in strategy, and now I’m using that passion to address challenges in my community. SAS—or “StressAS,” as it is not so fondly referred to—is known for overwhelming educational competitiveness. This often results in authentic learning being pushed aside. My project uses the reality TV show Survivor as a thematic framework for the “Economics and Game Theory” class at SAS. My hope is to guide students toward a deeper, more authentic kind of learning—one that transcends the pressures of grades and rankings.

Strumming Success: Launching a Beginner Guitar Channel

Soundscapes Unbound: Three Musical Experiments

I have been playing guitar for at least four years and have developed a deep passion for it while improving my skills. I want to share my experience with the guitar by starting a YouTube channel that teaches people the basics of playing. My goal is to show others how enjoyable and fulfilling guitar can be. For my Catalyst project, I believe the best way to achieve this is by teaching people how to play songs and learn more about the instrument.

My project aims to create a mini album consisting of three innovative musical experiments that explore unconventional soundscapes and compositional techniques. Each track serves as a distinct exploration, challenging traditional musical elements and pushing the boundaries of musical expression. This album is a creative journey into new auditory landscapes.

During my Catalyst journey, I sought answers and developed online platforms to share my knowledge. My concise, in-depth nutrition guide delivers information that anyone can understand, regardless of prior background in nutrition. So, what are you waiting for?

From Instagram to MRT advertisements, cartoon-style illustrations are everywhere. These anime-inspired visuals have captivated global audiences, but have you ever wondered where they originated or why they’re so popular? My video project dives into the origins of these illustrations, examining their appeal and influence on artistic genres. By exploring their history and aesthetic, I aim to provide valuable insights into this ubiquitous art form.

As a junior struggling to find time to relax, I value the peace that sleep brings. This project explores the impact of piano music on stress, anxiety, and sleep quality, combining my interests in piano and psychology to create music that eases anxiety and improves sleep. Throughout my project, I researched music therapy, conducted interviews, and composed original pieces to help others—and myself—find rest.

Tracking Speed: A Stage Win in My Sports Photography Career

Sports photographer Donald Miralle first caught my attention during his coverage of the Ironman World Championships. As a triathlete, I admired the athletes he documented, but I was equally drawn to his creative composition techniques. As a wildlife photographer, I wanted to challenge myself by experimenting with sports photography. The perfect opportunity arose with a job at the Tour de France’s Singapore Criterium. Photographing legends like Mark Cavendish and Primož Roglič was an honor, and the intense experience added valuable skills to my photographic toolkit.

Mind and Muscle: A Podcast on the Mental Benefits of Working Out with Music

By integrating physical exercise with the power of music, this project highlights a holistic approach to mental health. It investigates how structured workouts, enhanced by different music genres, contribute to emotional balance, stress relief, improved focus, and higher self-esteem. The project emphasizes how exercise and music can boost mood and mental resilience, offering insights into improving overall well-being. This initiative represents a movement within our community to prioritize mental and physical health as vital components of daily life.

Beyond the Rivalry: Cultivating Community at SAS

This project seeks to turn rivalry into resilience at Singapore American School. By gathering student stories and collecting insights through school surveys, we’ll uncover how the culture of comparison affects well-being. The organized profiles will reveal hidden pressures and the personal impact of this competitive mindset. With new strategies, PAC counselors and student leaders can shift the focus from rivalry to collective growth. Through workshops, shared experiences, and collaborative events, this initiative aims to cultivate a supportive community where students celebrate progress over perfection.

Learning to play the piano is a journey of both creativity and discipline, demanding consistent practice and strategic focus. My project explores how, through videos, I can share my own approach to learning piano, offering students the techniques and discipline that made my progress possible. It’s about understanding how to break down complex pieces, practice efficiently, and stay motivated, even through challenges. By teaching these strategies, I hope to empower others not just to play but to build habits that lead to lasting success. This project will guide others to cultivate their musical skills with purpose and consistency.

Tales of a Teen Reader: One Teen Reader on a Mission to Spread Her Love of Books

Books have always been my escape, a peaceful retreat from life’s chaos. But I’ve noticed that many teens, distracted by school or technology, don’t share this love for reading or even think it’s possible. Online content in this area is also lacking, with little aimed at my age group. For my Catalyst, I created a blog and Instagram page to bridge that gap. There, you’ll find reviews, recommendations, and reading-related content— curated specifically for teens, by a teen—to help others discover the joy of reading and maintain the sanctuary I’ve cherished for years.

The Undervalued Implications of Good Urban Design

You’ve surely thought about how your drawer or bedroom could be organized, but how about a city? The way these hearts of modern civilization are designed significantly affects the economic productivity, livability, and well-being of the citizens who increasingly inhabit them. What I love about urban design is its incredible diversity, encompassing everything from tree-lined boulevards to transport hubs. My final product is a digitally remodeled Houston, Texas, USA, which incorporates urban planning principles to encourage safe, healthy, and enjoyable transportation.

Growing up alongside my cousin with Down syndrome, I witnessed the joy he brings to our family and the barriers he faces, from silent stares to hurtful comments. My Catalyst project seeks to change these perceptions. Through a series of articles on Medium, I’ll explore the biology of Down syndrome, share my personal experiences, and discuss Singapore’s efforts toward inclusion. This project is about seeing the person, not just the syndrome, and advocating for greater acceptance.

Real-life work experience benefits teens as they transition into adulthood and college. Watching my friends get jobs has shown me how valuable these early opportunities are, from developing skills like time management and teamwork to gaining financial responsibility. However, nonPR teens in Singapore lack such opportunities, hindering their preparation for future challenges. I aim to advocate for this issue to the government, highlighting how early work experience aids youth development and helps them contribute meaningfully to Singapore’s workforce. Allowing non-PR teens to work will provide them with essential skills and better prepare them for future success.

Building Bridges: Transforming Teacher Training Experiences for Community Impact in Cambodia

Since kindergarten, I’ve joined my dad on teacher training trips to Cambodia. However, when the world came to a halt in 2020 due to COVID, these trips stopped. These experiences profoundly impacted my life, and I wanted to revive them. My project aims to restore these trips to Caring for Cambodia schools and empower SAS educators to make an enduring impact in Cambodian classrooms. By creating lesson plans and engaging in hands-on collaboration, Cambodian educators will gain strategies to uplift their teaching and enhance student learning experiences.

Equine Connections: The Role of Horses in Disability Assistance

How can horses transform lives for people with disabilities? This project explores the impact of equine-assisted services, focusing on how horses support physical, emotional, and social wellbeing. By examining case studies, research, and real-life examples, it highlights the therapeutic benefits horses offer. From improving motor skills and balance to boosting confidence and reducing anxiety. Through this study, I explore the unique bond between humans and horses and demonstrate how these gentle giants serve as powerful allies in enhancing quality of life for people with disabilities.

Eat to Compete: A High-Protein Guide for College Athletes

As an athlete invested in my own nutrition, I created this project to inspire college athletes to take charge of their health. My high-protein recipe guide is crafted specifically for busy college athletes who want to boost performance and recovery through balanced meals. Each recipe is dorm-friendly and easy to prepare while prioritizing essential nutrients like protein and carbohydrates to fuel energy and support muscle recovery. By experimenting with meal prep techniques and nutrient-dense ingredients, I aim to empower athletes to embrace convenient, wholesome eating that aligns with their athletic goals.

While learning new content hasn’t always been easy or fun, I’ve grown to appreciate the opportunity to discover new ideas and knowledge. I want to share this passion with others, especially those who might not have the same opportunities to learn. That’s why I’m creating fun and accessible science content for YouTube and TikTok, aiming to inspire a new audience to get curious and excited about science.

Music to My Eyes

How do we learn? For some, it may be textbooks. However, when I teach or tell a story, I prefer something more engaging and entertaining. When I first arrived in Singapore, I couldn’t speak English. Music and filmmaking bridged the gap between myself and those around me. Now, I aim to do the same by creating a musical film that showcases my great-grandfather’s story and explores Korean history.

How Can I Launch Music Programs to Positively Impact Someone’s Mental Health and Academic Performance

Music is an integral part of our lives, from singing in the car to listening to relaxing songs before bed. However, music is more than just a hobby—it can improve mental health and academic performance. It promotes a meaningful dopamine release, linked to healthy experiences, unlike the cheap dopamine triggered by junk food or excessive social media.

I created music playlists in four categories: Hope, Reflection, Motivation, and Social Connection. Each category targets specific emotions, positively influencing mental health and, in turn, enhancing academic performance.

From Concept to Curtain

For my project, I wanted to dive deep into my passion for drama and craft a play. I didn’t want to stop at writing a script but sought to include set plans, prop lists, tech ideas, and casting. As an actor, I wanted to explore everything that goes into creating a show, including the behind-thescenes work I usually don’t see. Over the course of this project, I’ve expanded my knowledge of theater and gained a deeper understanding of what makes a good play.

Exploring Aerodynamics: Donating Gliders to Kids in Need

From a young age, I’ve been passionate about engineering and service. For my Catalyst project, I worked with the Stairway Foundation to donate 3D-printed toy gliders to underprivileged kids in the Philippines. By designing and building these gliders, I applied knowledge in aerodynamics, 3D printing, and laser cutting. To further my impact, I created educational YouTube videos and taught SAS high schoolers interested in STEM.

ReStyle: Unique Jewellery, Upcycled for You

Storytelling has always been a powerful way to learn life lessons. During my project, I used various tools to explore my creativity, combining writing, lighting, sound, and stage design to create a play. Using a storyboard, I delved into themes of grief, healthy coping, and their expression. I worked with different people to develop skills in scriptwriting, modeling, and stage design, while also drawing on past experiences in lighting design to set the tone. This process helped me understand how stories can be enhanced and brought to life in meaningful ways.

Jewelry has always been a form of self-expression for me, and with ReStyle, my Catalyst project, I’m combining that passion with my commitment to sustainability. Through this project, I’m crafting a collection of handmade, upcycled pieces, each one unique and designed to inspire others to embrace sustainable—and quirky—fashion. With each piece, I’ve transformed worn materials into distinctive, wearable art, blending creativity with sustainability. ReStyle reflects my journey of innovation, sustainability, and the belief that beauty can be found in the unconventional.

Young West

with Fashion

When living in Tokyo, one of my main hobbies was thrifting—shopping for secondhand clothing and accessories. It has become increasingly popular due to its affordability, sustainability, and unique style possibilities. For my project, I wanted to take this hobby to the next level by customizing shirts. My learning journey has included screen printing, making cutouts, bleaching, and cropping shirts. Additionally, I’ve connected my passions with awareness by making shirts to promote school clubs I’m part of. In the future, I hope to further develop this skill and show others how to customize their clothing to encourage creativity.

Living among diverse cultures has fueled my passion for exploring the world through cuisine. By sharing my culinary adventures on TikTok, I hope to introduce others to new flavors and traditions while fostering a deeper understanding of the people behind the food. I believe food has the power to connect us all, and this project aims to bring that connection to life.

The Art of Deception: Card Magic Truly Your Bubble

I have already ventured into the world of card magic, performing for friends and family. Through this project, I hope to continue challenging myself by exploring the intersection of magic and performance skills. The project involves learning new sleight-of-hand techniques and researching performance strategies. Throughout this journey, I have explored innovative learning methods and gained valuable insights from conversations with professionals in the field. My ultimate goal is to perform for a larger, more diverse audience and to showcase the unique power of magic to create moments of joy and wonder in this fast-paced world.

The Intermediate Stage Plateau: Overcoming Challenges in Piano

On reflection, the most satisfying part of playing the piano is experiencing progression. Like many others, I’ve felt stuck at the intermediate stage and have lost some passion for music. It can take years to overcome this plateau and rekindle the joy of playing. Through a series of short videos, I aim to explain the challenges aspiring musicians face during this stage as they seek to master rhythm, dynamics, and expression. This project has taught me about others’ struggles in piano and video editing. Ultimately, I hope to help aspiring pianists progress and rediscover their passion.

For my Catalyst project, I wanted to turn a dream into reality. I’ve always aspired to be an entrepreneur and learn what it takes to succeed in business. My project launched a soap company that creates personalized face and body wash. Growing up in Singapore’s diverse community, I’ve observed the challenges of finding skincare products tailored to individual needs. Using Catalyst, I learned how to advertise my company and lay the foundation for a successful business while addressing the unique needs of my audience.

Undaunted: Wear Your Resilience

Being “Undaunted”—one who isn’t intimidated or discouraged by difficulty, danger, or disappointment—is the foundation of my clothing brand, Undaunted. It began as a simple idea: a desire to create something meaningful from my passion for resilience and strength. This journey isn’t just about clothing; it’s about building a community that celebrates grit and tenacity. Our tagline, “Fight, even after you die,” encapsulates this spirit. Undaunted is a testament to the power of believing in something bigger and sharing that strength with others.
