Mission
The mission of the SAS Foundation Limited (“SAS Foundation”) is to provide charitable funding for the educational programs, operations, and capital initiatives at Singapore American School and for SAS student educational needs. All charitable funds are utilized in strict accordance with the Foundation’s fundraising mandate and in compliance with laws and regulations in the Republic of Singapore. This report outlines the SAS Foundation’s activities and outcomes achieved in 2011–12. The report also summarizes the planned objectives for the year ahead, 2012–13.
Broadening Global Perspective, One Student at a Time
Our premise is simple. Our students are our future – they are the leaders, the teachers, the engineers, the artists, and the decision makers of tomorrow. The decisions they make, the values they demonstrate, and the solutions they offer will make each of them better global citizens. We are fortunate in Singapore that the people and the place—our community—shape our student’s perspective. The diversity of cultures and experiences within thriving Singapore changes how our children view the world. The faculty, staff, parents, and volunteers at Singapore American School help our students learn and grow through their experiences at SAS and in Singapore. Gifts to the SAS Foundation help make SAS a robust and rewarding learning environment.

SAS FOUNDATION LIMITED ANNUAL REPORT 2011–12
FY 2011–2012 Activity Highlights
Fundraising The SAS Foundation focused its efforts in the fiscal year 2011–2012 on raising funds that will benefit educational opportunity today, through the SAS Annual Fund; while also building the basis for increased charitable support for the future, through donor engagement and strategic planning to match the Foundation’s funding priorities with emerging opportunities for donor financial support. In March 2012, the SAS Foundation held its 7th annual Star Appeal Dinner. Star Appeal is the Foundation’s signature fundraising event, providing an opportunity for donors to make charitable contributions and to celebrate the achievements of students and faculty at Singapore American School. This year’s Star Appeal Dinner raised more than S$630,000. In addition, the SAS Foundation began further outreach to alumni, parents, and friends affiliated with the School. Through these broadened efforts to involve our community, the SAS Foundation raised another S$270,000. In 2011–12, the SAS Foundation received in total S$901,000 in charitable gifts. Engaging the Community The SAS Superintendent and advancement staff held conversations with School community members regarding the School’s charitable funding priorities and ways that the funding will improve the quality of education. As a result of these many conversations with parents, alumni, faculty, and students, a preliminary document of proposed funding priorities was developed and, in 2012–13, will be reviewed, refined and integrated into the School’s long-range financial planning. Ultimately, this document will underpin the case for why and how private funds will advance the mission of Singapore American School. Strategic Planning To better align its mission with program objectives and fundraising aims, in 2011–12, the SAS Foundation began a process of strategic and organizational planning. As a result of this planning process, the SAS Foundation created three committees of its Board of Directors to provide more effective direction, oversight, and accountability. The committees are: Development and Gift Acceptance; Governance; and Audit. The Board also established the role of treasurer to provide Board leadership on matters relating to finances and gift acceptance. The chairpersons of the Governance and Audit Committees, respectively, will be a member of the Board of Directors as appointed by the Board chair. The treasurer is elected from among the Directors and will also serve as the chair of the Development and Gift Acceptance Committee.

Program Plans for FY2012–13
Overview In 2012–13, the SAS Foundation will continue to develop and implement the fundamental building blocks for long–term achievement of the Foundation’s mission and to ensure maximum productivity in its fundraising efforts. Program plans include the execution of the SAS Annual Fund, which provides on–going resources for today’s funding needs; introduction of the new SAS Superintendent to donors and prospective donors; alignment of SAS long–term direction and vision with the financial resources afforded by sustainable long–term funding, such as endowment; and improved communication and stewardship with donors. The SAS Annual Fund Last year the Foundation launched the SAS Annual Fund, a comprehensive approach to seeking annual charitable support. The SAS Annual Fund is comprised of all gifts made to SAS and the SAS Foundation to advance the mission and vision of Singapore American School. This year, the SAS Foundation will host its 8th Star Appeal Gala Dinner, a hallmark fundraising event. In addition the SAS Foundation will engage other interested SAS community members, such as alumni, to seek their support of the SAS Annual Fund. Introducing the New Superintendent and Connecting People, Vision and Resources As the SAS Foundation’s mission is to support education at Singapore American School, it is important for donors to know the new School Superintendent and his vision for SAS. Therefore, a great deal of attention will be devoted to engaging the Superintendent with stakeholders and to discussing ways to improve educational opportunity and learning. The SAS Foundation will continue its expansion and engagement of its base of donor relationships over the next several years. Communication and Donor Stewardship As SAS and the SAS Foundation devote more time and attention to the utilization of donor gift funds to meet the School’s mission and vision, it will be important to more frequently share with donors the impact of their gifts on improved learning at SAS. The SAS Foundation will establish new venues and media for communicating the use of donor funds and for recognizing, thanking, and engaging donors.
