Superintendent’s Message
From the Superintendent
August 2, 2005
A
s I write this, the jack-hammers, backhoes, concrete pumpers and other noisy machines are whirring away outside my window. Forty eight new teachers have arrived and they are busy acclimating themselves to Singapore and SAS. It all signals the beginning of another school year.
All school years are special, but this one carries additional significance because we are celebrating the 50th anniversary of the school, and we are completing a major building project that started three years ago. There is hardly an area in the entire building that didn’t experience a major upgrade or an addition. The campus is looking beautiful and we are so very grateful that our parent community has supported this major building improvement project. We are also experiencing a significant enrollment increase. Currently, we have 3280 students enrolled for the start of the school year which surpasses the previous record setting enrollment of 3141 which was set at the close of last school year. The largest class is the 10th grade with 282 students. I’m starting my seventh year as the Superintendent of Schools at SAS and my forty-second year in this marvelous profession. Recently, I was asked what I hoped would be my greatest accomplishment as Superintendent at SAS. I replied, “If I can help create an environment where faculty and staff can do in more spectacular ways what they’re here to do, then I’ve contributed. The exciting part is being in a position to create and build in new ways that allow for new possibilities”. Possibilities continue to grow out of the rich nurturing and intellectual ferment that exists at Singapore American School. If this Century is about one thing it is about creating and harnessing new possibilities: Creative uses for technology. Creative solutions to problems that bedevil our neighborhoods and our world. Creative ways to keep ourselves and our communities healthy. It’s about creative ways to balance individual liberties with the collective good. With your continued support, our faculty will continue to unleash those possibilities for our students. It will be another grand year. Welcome to Singapore American School.
Bob Gross Superintendent of Schools

PTA News 4
Welcome from PTA
M
y name is Susan Fay, and as the President of the Singapore American School PTA I would like to welcome you to this new school year. This is the beginning of my family ’s four th year here in Singapore, and we are looking for ward to another exciting year at SAS. To those of you returning to SAS, I would like to welcome you back after your summer vacation. We all look forward to catching up with friends, and meeting our new members of the SAS community. For those who have just joined us at SAS, I would like to extend a warm welcome to our community. By having your child or children enrolled at SAS you are automatically a member of PTA. During my time here in Singapore, I have participated on a number of committees and attended many of the functions held at SAS, and strongly encourage you to become involved with
organizations suppor ting the Singapore American School, such as the PTA. Par ticipation in these organizations is a great way to become involved and meet many of the fine people here in Singapore and to become involved with your child’s education.
all of you to the PTA Welcome Back Coffee, which will be held at 8:30 – 11:00 am on Friday the 26 th of August in the Elementary Theater. This will be a great opportunity to find out more about the plans for this school year, and to find ways to participate in activities around SAS.
During the summer, construction continued here on the SAS campus and we are all excited to see the final phase completed. Over the past three years we have seen dramatic changes in the school campus and we all should feel proud of the facilities that are available for our children. But the physical assets of SAS are only a small portion of the strength of our community. We look to you and your family to help us build the personal strength that SAS provides to our school and families.
During the first few weeks of school you’ll see many members of the PTA Board and Welcoming Committee around campus wearing badges. Please feel free to stop any of us to introduce yourself or ask questions. A member of the Welcoming Committee should be contacting each new family during the next few weeks to welcome you and assist in any way. We apologize if we miss anyone. If you don’t receive a call contact us at PTA@sas.edu.sg or call any member of the Welcoming Committee. Their information can be found in the PTA sec tion of the school website.
As we all settle in for the new school year, I would like to invite you to attend the PTA Ice Cream Social during the Open House on Saturday the 13 th of August from 10-2 in the Intermediate/Middle School Cafeteria. This event will be a great time to catch up with friends and to meet new members of our SAS family. I would also like to invite
I look forward to seeing you around campus and look forward to an exciting year here at SAS. Susan Fay PTA President

Summer Construction
9 Making the Most of our Track and Fields.... Students will return once again this August to a renewed and expanded SAS campus. This summer most construction focused on changes within the Primary and Intermediate School and Central Administration. However, one impressive project that will touch the lives of our students at all grade levels is the new track and stadium field.
Summer Construction When you come on campus for the first time in August, you will see some exciting changes and additions to the SAS campus that have been made during the summer holiday. You can’t miss the beautiful new entry to the Central Administration office, and you will want to explore other areas of the school to see the changes made over the summer. This final phase of construction marks the completion of a 64 million dollar expansion and renovation project that broke ground in June 2003, adding and renovating facilities to support an eventual enrollment of 3700 students. This summer, additional classrooms were added to the Primary School, a new elementary gymnasium and Primary School cafeteria were added, and renovations were made to existing classroom spaces to allow for additional music and art classrooms in the Intermediate and Primary Schools. Plan to spend some time exploring the campus to see the many changes to the facility while you are at school for Open House. Open House this year is Saturday August 13th from 10am to 2pm.
To be sure, the athletic fields have been a much-loved and frequently used part of the campus for years. They are used not only for classes, SAS athletics and special events, but also by community organizations such as SACAC. Especially on the stadium field, this has meant substantial wear and tear over the nine years the Woodlands Campus has been our home. Now we have a brand new track surface, and an entirely new field of natural turf that will serve us well for many years to come. This project has been on the drawing board since the Board of Governors approved the school expansion project in 2003. Originally planned as artificial turf, after much investigation the decision was made to install real turf. Not only is this a better solution for our school for a number of reasons, it also resulted in a substantial cost savings. Stop by and take a look next time you up at school. For those of you that are new to SAS this year and are just finding your way around the school, you will find the stadium field just behind the high school. For a great view, head to the high school cafeteria and look out the windows facing the back of the campus.
