EDITOR’S LETTER

RIGHT NOW, a bit of grace goes a long way. That’s true when we consider how we treat our families, colleagues, strangers and even ourselves. It’s also true of how we treat our homes. If you’re like me, you’ve spent much of 2020 inside the house, chronicling all of its shortcomings. In no particular order, my home could use a kitchen reno, upgraded bathrooms, a new sofa, a new back deck and one Extreme Home Makeover. But when I prescribe grace, my perspective shifts: I’m lucky to have a home at all, one with vintage charm and history to boot — not to mention a sizable, private backyard. My home has more than met me halfway in the challenge of being an office, a restaurant (my husband missed his calling as a short-order cook) and an occasional gym, although guidance from interior designer Robyn Roberts on page 40 has helped it juggle so many roles with aplomb. Before, during and surely after a global pandemic, my house, with all its peccadilloes, has been a refuge. In Japan, two aesthetic ideals — wabi, when a small flaw gives elegance or uniqueness to an object, and sabi, when beauty stems from patina and age — are together known as wabi-sabi, a concept centered on the acceptance of imperfection. By embracing its flaws, you might just find your home blossoms into something even more beautiful. And if, in the end, you’re ready to hit refresh, we’ve got you covered: head to page 75 for expert renovation advice to ensure your house sells quickly. Onward and upward!

Full Circle A trio of owner-makers realize their dreams Written by SYLVIE BAGGETT

WHEN MIA ALLEN MET Julia Jarrett and Dymphna Frazier, something magical happened. “It all came together very quickly,” Frazier says. “Three women with similar dreams, different products, and the vision of someday owning their own shop.” The Circle, located at 125 East Broad St., is that vision come to life, bursting with natural light, shimmering crystals, trailing house plants and bright colors. The Circle also feels a bit like a dreamscape for its visitors: It’s not uncommon to see Jarrett gliding across the checkerboard-tile floor in roller skates or to

overhear a conversation about the best time to perform a spell for good fortune. The shop carries everything from zines on mindfulness and meditation to non-binary jumpsuits folded on bright white shelves. While most of the shop’s products are from womenowned businesses based in the U.S., some items are found much closer to home. Behind the checkout desk, the three owners have their studios set up — an explosion of prints, paints and fabric — for all to see. “I believe that our studio spaces being visible makes everything much more personal for customers,” Jarrett says. “I love to see where my products come from. For us, a lot of our products are made just a few feet from where they’re sold.” Jarrett works as The Circle’s in-shop screen-printer. Allen owns Ravel and UnRavel, a clothing company that specializes in hand-dyed fabrics. Bespell & Co., Frazier’s business, offers everything from tarot decks to candles and embossed cutting boards. “At one point, we considered blocking our studio spaces off to hide our messy process, but so many people were interested in what we were doing that we kept them visible,” Allen says. “It definitely makes me more aware of the disaster I create when I’m super absorbed in a project!” Open studios not only help customers understand the relationship between a product and its maker but also cultivate inspiration for the artists. “Before opening the shop, my creative business felt more like a hustle,” Allen says. “But with The Circle, I’m feeling more focused and making more new work than I have in years.” Jarrett, a recent SCAD graduate, says that The Circle helped fine-tune who she is as an artist. “Being in this space and working with so many brands that I hadn’t known before opened my eyes to the possibilities that small, women-owned businesses can have.” The Circle celebrates female entrepreneurship, but also Savannah itself. The blend of the city’s warm welcome and its mystic-steeped past make it the perfect home (perhaps magically so) for this charming studio and store.

BEFORE & AFTER

BEFORE

Moment of Zen Written by SYLVIE BAGGETT

FUNCTION AND STYLE blend seamlessly in this Lowcountry kitchen, exactly as its principal designer, Laura Lee Samford of LLS Furniture and Interior Design, intended. Pulling inspiration from the tones of the Ogeechee River (the home overlooks it), Samford paired nods to riverfront living with modern, Zen-like tranquility. Such stunning results ultimately caught the attention of Sub-Zero, Wolf and Cove Appliances — the kitchen was a finalist for the companies’ national Kitchen Design Contest. Wire-brushed white oak cabinetry, installed by Josh Brooks of Josh Brooks Construction Group, evokes the spirit of driftwood.

Glass-front display cases add openness to the room, while hand-blown light fixtures over the large kitchen island emphasize its importance as both a focal point and a place to gather. It’s all a far cry from the original, run-of-the-mill design. Now, the thoughtfully designed space includes top-of-the-line appliances, wine storage and a large butler’s pantry with washer-dryer units and two additional ovens. Rather than hiding them away, items of utility — like a broom and step ladder — become cleverly integrated decor elements. Their visibility further promotes the room’s inherent functionality: a kitchen is a place where messes are made, but always cleaned up.

DESIGN BRIEF

Real Teal Project: Vernonburg grandkids’ room Principal: Carolyn Hultman, Hultman Interiors PART OF A HOME that dates back to 1847, this room is on what we call the garden floor. Today, it’s a playspace for the grandchildren, but before the redesign we actually dubbed it the “Stephen King room” because it was kind of spooky and only used for storage — the homeowners even had monogrammed towels in the bathroom that said “SK”! Now that it’s bright and bohemian-chic,

38

SAVANNAHMAGAZINE.COM

the grandkids love it. When they come to visit, they go right to that room: it accesses the yard, all their toys are in there, and there’s a small table and chairs for arts and crafts. They’re so cute in the way that they use the space. Sometimes, they’ll spend the night and sleep in the daybed, which I painted and then added burlap on each end. Between two original fireplaces and lots of exposed brick and beams, this

area was probably a kitchen at one time. The doors are original and timeworn, and we worked with that look by hiring a specialty painter to transform the walls and create a decorative sponge technique on the concrete floor. The end result is very eclectic, with fabulous art — the portrait just above the daybed is of one of the family’s favorite dogs. — As told to Sara Watson

Camp Craft Cocktails

Make Space THROUGHOUT 2020, our homes have taken on myriad roles: office, school, gym, restaurant. Now more than ever, our spaces need to be multifunctional, with an increased emphasis on storage, purposeful furniture and a bit of figurative breathing room. This year has been a challenge, and the list below will hopefully provide some solutions in your home.

A LOOKS-GOOD-ANYWHERE DESK.

I love the burled wood Made Goods desk that works in traditional and contemporary spaces. Simple lines and drawers make it the perfect desk for your new makeshift office. You know, the one in the family room. STYLISH EXTRA STORAGE. Whether

you have kids at home or are just in need of extra storage for all of your newly acquired quarantine reading, the wicker étagère at left from Amanda Lindroth is a stylish solution. I’d use it in a kids room to fill with organized baskets of school supplies, homework and coloring books.

A (MENTAL) VACATION. Thinking of travel more than ever, I’ve been stocking up on coffee table books. I’ve read Inside Tangier by author and interior designer Nicolò Castellini Baldissera cover to cover multiple times and am still dreaming of riads, pomegranates and tile. HOME BAR UPGRADES. Welcome to Savannah, have a drink. Alcohol sales are up, and the gourmet cocktail kit in a jar from Camp Craft Cocktails makes me feel like a mixologist. Bonus: It’s sold locally at Mamie Ruth | M.Liz Jewelry at 107 W. Liberty St.

ily at home 24/7, my house is scattered with everything from work reports to My Little Pony dolls. My very talented upholsterer makes custom storage ottomans for my clients with hidden castors (translation: easy to move around) and ample storage for all of the little things that get left behind; you can also find several options at Pottery Barn. I throw everything in at the end of the day, and voila! A clean room.

IF YOU’VE NEVER HAD A HOUSEPLANT BEFORE These houseplants, according to STUMP owner Brian Kellett, are adaptable and hardy, making them ideal for beginners. “You don’t have to water them more than once a week or once every two weeks,” he says.

SNAKE PLANT

The sansevieria is also called a snake plant (the variety with a yellow band is called “mother-inlaw’s tongue” on account of its tall and pointy appearance). A great addition to any room, the low-maintenance snake plant has sturdy, vertical leaves that are often variegated in stripes of dark green. It can adapt to all kinds of lighting and prefers to dry out fully between waterings. A favorite of Cast & Grey Botanical’s Emily Hinners, the snake plant can even go a full month without being watered. “It helps filter the air in your house every night, so it takes care of you more than you take care of it,” Hinners says. POTHOS

Take Root The who’s-who and how-to of all things houseplants Written by JAY LANKAU

AS SUMMER SLIDES INTO FALL, home goods stores never miss the opportunity to put out as many fall-leaf decorations as possible. Even when the South is still a ripe 85 degrees, store shelves are stacked with nature’s reds, oranges and yellows. It can be exciting and refreshing to have a change of scenery, but the color green in nature benefits the psyche (a Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health study even found it lowered mortality rates). And with many of us spending extended periods of time indoors, why not bring that outdoor greenery in? Semi-tropical and generally evergreen, houseplants are a great way to filter a home’s stale air and brighten up rooms with something living. If you’re over the banana-bread craze, turn your attention to something low-maintenance, leafy and good for your mental wellbeing.

Bushy and beautiful, pothos is a type of ivy that comes in many variations, such as golden pothos, jade pothos and marble queen pothos. Its relatively small size makes it a great plant for any desk or shelf. However, it may need to be trimmed or pruned occasionally in order to keep the ivy from getting too long, or “leggy.” Pothos loves bright light but can adapt to dimmer rooms. It likes a rich potting mix. It also needs to dry out a bit between waterings, making it very forgiving for busy owners who might forget to water it. ZZ PLANT

Another hardy fellow, the ZZ plant has thick, waxy leaves. Like many houseplants, it also helps purify indoor air. ZZ plants come in small or medium sizes and are versatile when it comes to light. Keep it out of the window, though, because it can’t tolerate bright, harsh sunlight. It, too, likes to dry out before getting another watering, and it can generally go even longer without water in the winter months.

IF YOU’VE GOT A GREEN THUMB A little more temperamental than the beginner plants on page 43, these picks are for intermediate-level plant keepers. As Hinners says, “There’s a bit of sleuth work involved in making sure they’re thriving, but nothing too difficult.”

MONSTERA DELICIOSA

The fashionable monstera deliciosa features heavily on interior design websites, often called the Swiss cheese plant because of its natural leaf holes. Its long, reaching stems and wide, evergreen leaves fill larger spaces inside the home. Bright to medium indirect light is the monstera’s favorite, and it needs water about every one to two weeks. If it’s getting more light, it may dry out quicker, so keep an eye on the soil moisture. This houseplant has roots that allow it to climb, so to keep it from growing out of control, the team at Cast & Grey Botanical recommend a moss pole. A word of caution: keep this plant out of reach of pets and children, as ingesting the leaves causes irritation. FIDDLE LEAF FIG

If you follow any home decor accounts on Instagram, chances are you’ve seen the fiddle leaf fig around. Tall, wavy and handsome is the fiddle leaf fig’s claim to fame, but this star can also be a prima donna. It needs bright light, so it should always be within seven feet of a window. Water for the

fiddle leaf, like many houseplants, is very much as-needed. If the soil seems dry, then it’s time for water. The leaves on the fiddle leaf fig are its most fickle part, prone to both infection and pests. Thankfully, Meredith Zipperer of Hester & Zipperer has her own formula for getting rid of those pesky bugs. “With houseplants, you will encounter pests at some point,” she says. “Fill a spray bottle with three parts water and one part dish soap, and spray the plant down.” PEPEROMIA

With thick, succulent-like leaves, the peperomia is a relatively low-maintenance houseplant that has a wide variety of crossbreeds. Valued for its ability to propagate easily, the peperomia comes in all kinds of types, like watermelon, grey luna and teardrop peperomia. With so many varieties to choose from, you can be sure that there’s a peperomia out there that suits your style. Medium to bright light helps keep this plant healthy. Be sure not to water too much, though, as it’s prone to root rot, which occurs when a plant is overwatered or has a poor drainage system.

POTS & TOOLS You don’t need an abundance of tools to take care of your houseplants, but a few staples will make maintaining them much easier and cleaner. Hinners’ picks include a trowel for potting, gloves, wooden dowels for checking the soil’s moisture, and, surprisingly, a turkey baster. “The turkey baster, for me at least, is essential on watering day,” Hinners says. “If the saucer under the pot starts filling up too quickly, it’s easy to draw it back up with the baster so nothing goes to waste or ruins my wood furniture.” The type of pot you have your plant in can also make a big difference. Terra cotta wicks moisture away from the soil, so it’s perfect for plants that need to stay a bit drier, like the ZZ plant. Meanwhile, anything that needs frequent watering is better off in a plastic or glazed ceramic pot. “Whatever vessel you choose,” Hinners says, “always make sure your plant is potted in something with a drainage hole.”

44

SAVANNAHMAGAZINE.COM

OTHER TIPS & TRICKS When do you pot a plant? Kellett explains that you can actually pot it right after you get it from a nursery or garden center, or you can wait for up to a year. As for soil, each plant has different needs and grows at different speeds depending on its environment, but generally speaking, the soil will need replacing every 3-4 years.

Let’s talk about plant food, a.k.a. fertilizer. Fertilizer is recommended to help boost the soil’s nutrients and help your plant thrive. There are all kinds of options for indoor plant fertilizer, but Herb Creek Landscape Supply says the number one pick is Jack’s Classic. “We have all the Jack’s fertilizers, and they all work really well,” shares one team member. The indoor variety comes in an easy-to-use, messfree, water-soluble form.

According to our expert plant panel, the No. 1 mistake people make is overwatering. If something doesn’t quite look right, the answer may not be to give it more water, but to check the soil and leaves for bugs or anything out of the ordinary. Pay attention to the plant’s foliage for clues, particularly the color and growth habit.

IT WAS THE EASE OF DRIVING through the Lowcountry’s moss-laden trees that attracted Doug and Joni Schmidt to settle down here. They were taking back roads out of Augusta after a weekend at The Masters Practice Rounds a few years back, when they stumbled upon the vast sea island haven that is Palmetto Bluff. “The beauty, the wildlife and all of the things it has to offer really got to me. We saw dolphins going down the May River, alligators in the pond,” Schmidt recalls. “Every stinkin’ bit of wildlife that the bluff had to offer came out to see us that day!” Fast-forward to today, where the bluff’s coastal beauty is present from all angles of the Schmidt’s three-bedroom, three-anda-half bathroom home, completed in 2018. After purchasing a lot with plenty of greenery, Schmidt scouted architect Pearce Scott to help bring the vision of her dream home to fruition. Growing up in Louisiana and familiar with New Orleans’ lush Garden District, Schmidt’s nostalgia is present in the gallery-style exterior, decorated with full-length shutters. Schmidt’s desire to keep the interior layout on the traditional side also harks back to the roots of old Southern living. She was attracted to a clear separation of spaces, not unlike those in New Orleans’ shotgun homes. “To me, there’s something really satisfying about getting a home slowly revealed to you, versus opening the front door and boom, you’ve seen it all,” Schmidt says, noting she and her husband previously lived in (and were tired of living in) open-concept spaces. A continual contrast of modern and traditional converges effortlessly in a simple detail — light fixtures. Tracie Henderson at The Light Post in Bluffton introduced Schmidt to Lowcountry Originals fixtures; now, the brand’s distressed iron-and-copper Vintage Long Bar and Belfair chandeliers make a statement suspended next to crisp white walls. The home’s reclaimed wooden floors, sourced from a barn by Scott Ziel of Ziel’s Antique Flooring, are another striking element. The panels are in practically original condition, with termite holes still visible under the glossy finish. Although Schmidt’s vision for the home was strong, she leaned on local creatives who were more than willing to share their expertise. Ashley Avery of Palmetto Cabinet Studio helped balance the cabinet layout in the kitchen and baths, and Leah Bailey of Leah Bailey Interiors shared tips Schmidt hadn’t considered, which helped to elevate the home even further (the two also bonded over paint — specifically, White Dove by Benjamin Moore). “I will always take some of [Leah’s] ideas with me, like the Greek key trim on the curtains,” Schmidt says. “That was the perfect touch.” With a slew of tasteful details sprinkled about, Schmidt valued the convergence of taste and functionality the most. This ideal is showcased in the “scullery,” or butler’s pantry, which Schmidt believes is the most functional room in the house. While she’s most likely to admire her beloved, free-standing stove from a

distance, the scullery’s beverage center, with a microwave and automatic coffee machine, is in constant use. Still, her deep appreciation for the scullery’s utility is no match for her favorite room in the house: the master suite. “The ceiling is such that even if the room were totally devoid of furniture, it still feels full because the architecture is so beautiful, and the wood walls are so stunning,” Schmidt says. Despite the physical inspiration from Schmidt’s beloved Louisiana architecture, the spirit of the home conveys timeless Southern charm, be it on the bayou or on the bluff. “The house itself has a great feeling about it of warmth and charisma, and that’s the No. 1 thing people say when they come into the house, that it just feels so good,” Schmidt says. “To me, that’s the greatest compliment.”

Painterly Punch An artist-turned-designer creates a happy home on Whitemarsh Island Written by MARGARET DANIEL Photography by BRENT INGERSOLL

IT SEEMS THE BEST THINGS in life come when you aren’t looking for them. In one such stroke of serendipity, while munching on burgers at the Savannah Yacht Club, a Whitemarsh Island couple heard a neighbor mention an available lot on Commodore Drive. Eager to learn more, they hopped on their bikes, inspected

the site by moonlight and, instantly enchanted by the view, pedaled furiously back, offering to take the property on the spot. Once the lot was theirs, the family of four enlisted the experts at Alair Homes Savannah to build their four-bedroom, five-bathroom waterfront house with the help of Catherine Lovett:

professional painter, photographer and, for this home, interior designer. The child of serial movers — her parents ambitiously renovated houses all over the East Coast and even one in far-flung New Zealand — Lovett comes by her knack for design honestly. For the Commodore Drive property, so seamless was Lovett’s process and so successful the result, Alair Homes asked her to come on staff. No wonder: the completed design exudes a

captivating joie de vivre from the moment guests enter the front door. “When you walk in, there has to be a pop,” she says. “Something that makes you go ‘wow.’” That very first “wow” — panels of Schumacher’s Brighton Pavilion wallpaper adorning the walls of a study just off the foyer — inspired the home’s larger design. avannah’s charm has attracted world-renowned implantologist and dental educator Dr. Robert Walinchus to the Hostess City — and the Savannah Dental team. Dr. Walinchus is a Diplomat — the highest honor bestowed — of the International Congress of Oral Implantologists, a prestigious worldwide organization of doctors dedicated to the study, placement and restoration of dental implants. This means no more needing to drive to Atlanta or Jacksonville to see the best of the best. “I came to Savannah Dental because they wanted to do the best dentistry possible for the patient. That’s my philosophy, too!” says Dr. Walinchus. “I love teaching the team about the advances in implant dentistry. I look forward to work each time I go.” Still, Dr. Walinchus is not all work and no play. His favorite pastime is flying his

plane! “Flying is fun and precision-guided just like implants,” he says. He also enjoys golf (another precision-guided pastime), fly fishing and ice hockey. In Savannah for just more than a month, Dr. Walinchus has fallen in love with not only Savannah, but also Savannahians, too. “The people are so nice here. It’s a pleasure to care for them,” he says. Once traveling becomes safer again, Dr. Walinchus will continue teaching his implant course, which he’s been doing for 15 years, around the United States, England and Scotland. Prior to COVID-19, his course at the prestigious International Congress of Oral Implantologists Conference was sold out and standingroom only. Dr. Walinchus’ teaching skills translate well into exceptional patient care, as he believes educating patients on their oral health is his number one priority. The office’s investment in dental technology also attracted Dr. Walinchus

to Savannah Dental. “Practicing dentistry without all the technology that’s out there is like trying to create a presentation on a typewriter instead of a computer,” describes Savannah Dental’s Dr. Stephanie Joy Sweeney. Prior to Dr. Walinchus’s arrival, the office upgraded its dental imaging to a 3D CT machine. Traditional dental imaging shows just one small section of the mouth at a time. The 3D CT technology improves the team’s understanding of patient’s oral health by allowing doctors to see the full picture. Savannah Dental is also the only office in Savannah to have an iTero Element 5D scanner, which uses nearinfrared technology to spot cavities hidden to the naked eye without using ionizing radiation of traditional X-rays. To find out more information about dental implants and Savannah Dental’s new technology, call the team at 912.355.8821. 815 E. 68TH ST.

“I wanted the interior elements here to be more organic.”—Catherine Lovett toward the dry bar, lacquered in an acidic chartreuse. A mirror tile backsplash (Lovett hand-antiqued the tiles herself) and a boar’s head laden with string lights above a sleek, stainless-steel counter ensure the small room packs a resonant punch. Such saturated hues make perfect sense to the painter-turneddesigner, who sees them in the island marshes she puts on canvas. “I love the color that nature provides,” Lovett says of her beloved blues and greens, “and [those rooms] were a fun way to play the two colors off of each other.” Across from the study in the powder room, Lovett’s signature whimsy shines through again. Designed to shine like “a little jewel box,” a gang of Gucci tigers silently growl at guests as they gaze into the antique, gilt mirror. These of-the-moment colors and patterns are grounded by the off-white foyer and central living area. But not everything is bright and busy: the back room, with its many uses and expansive wall of windows, allows the “eyes to rest,” as Lovett says. Here, instead of punchy papers or glossy paints, she lets the seasonal hues of the marsh do the talking. “I wanted the interior elements here to be more organic.” Stained wooden cabinets and high-end appliances mingle under exposed wooden beams to create a luxurious chef ’s kitchen open to the dining and living areas. Tufted dining chairs from Restoration Hardware, a selection of antiques from Scott Antique Market, and a pair of Kelly Wearstler Linden lamps from Circa Lighting mingle to create an inviting, unfussy living space with uninterrupted views of the marsh. Accenting the walls are antique mirrors — a nod to the adjacent dry bar — and even a few paintings by Lovett herself. Her landscapes, notable for their brilliant colors and bold strokes, reflect her interior design philosophy: clean, modern lines paired with fresh pieces that will stand the test of time. “Everything has to have relation and balance,” she notes. Just beyond this hardworking space is a massive screened porch that has quickly become the owners’ favorite spot to relax (the master suite even has its own private porch connected to the central, outdoor living space). Back inside, the home’s various bedrooms feature quiet palettes that emphasize the views beyond. Fun details, like fish scale tiles in the master shower, are some of Lovett’s cheeky nods to the Lowcountry setting. Every room carefully sized and considered, the homeowners report that they are contented on the waterfront. Lovett, whose bold designs made it all possible, sums it up succinctly: “It’s a happy home.”

AS A MOTHER OF YOUNG CHILDREN, I know that a house is not just a structure, but a living, breathing nest where lives are cultivated. It’s the place where a family gathers around tables to share stories, where children clomp around in soccer cleats or slide around in socks, where the rush of morning madness leads to the stillness of the walls that have shaped us. Home is the space where we’re most ourselves. Family is at the center of this bold and playful new construction in The Landings. “We wanted an atmosphere where we could entertain, where our three kids could bring friends who’d feel welcome — and where everyone had their own spaces,” says the homeowner. The open design of the home itself was inspired by the bright, breezy homes in Florida, where she and her husband first met. This nest caters to more than human development, admits the homeowner, who jokingly describes herself as keeping a

“mini-menagerie” of feathered and whiskered friends. Three dogs, two cats, two parakeets, an Amazon parrot, a bunny and a tortoise were also considered in the utility and functionality of the home, down to the choice of easily cleaned Sunbrella fabrics throughout. If the layout of the house was borne of nostalgia, the interior design considers the homeowner’s love of animals and the ocean, with movement and color to spare. The home’s designer, Curry Salandi of Curry & Co. LLC, translated the owners’ sensibilities into eye-catching odes of joy, which come through in bold pops of color and mixed prints. “Good flow and usable space was important to us, as was a design that represented our interests and personalities.” That’s what the best nests do: Nurture and protect, certainly, but also create room for flights of unexpected fancy. traditional and eclectic elements. Persian rugs contrast cozy leopard patterns, creating a lighthearted atmosphere. Silhouettes of dogs trot across the walls of the laundry room. Dragons float to greet powder room guests. A stately elk’s head looks down upon a blue, jewel-toned couch in the den, warning the menagerie members, “Don’t misbehave too much on those pillows, my friends! Look at me now.” The family’s whimsy leaves room for practicality. A book nook for the bibliophile owner, wrapped in colors out of Rudyard Kipling’s The Jungle Book, serves as a hideaway for reading as well as a trundle bed for the occasional children’s sleepover. A dreamy cabana features a vintage arcade game table and a nautical-themed bath; quarantined kids used it constantly, reports the homeowner, watching movies from the hot tub while enjoying fresh air. with a calm, neutral palate, sleek quartz counters and subway tile. Warm wood and brass accents create an urban core to this island oasis. “The kitchen is the hub of our house, especially with kids,” explains the homeowner, who wanted a kitchen island large enough to seat the children and their friends. The centerpiece of the kitchen is also a masterpiece: an oversized, rivet-studded metal hood that hangs like a piece of modern art. The owners loved this hood so much that they commissioned a dining table to match, tying the room together with a cosmopolitan touch that would make anyone imagine a twinkling city skyline just outside. But it’s what’s on the inside that counts. That’s what my mother always told me; that’s what I tell my children, too. The interior of this home tells a story of the people who live inside. It’s a story that’s colorful, creative and undeniably fun — and one where you can almost hear the kids giggling at the latest antics of an Amazon parrot.

Move on up — and spur a sale — with key home renovations Photo by KATIE M C GEE

FALL / WINTER 2020 –21

77

Big-ticket items that last — like a new roof or HVAC system — offer confirmation to a buyer that a home has been well maintained.

Kitchen renovations are historically known for a solid return on investment.

78

THIS SPRING, many homeowners found themselves sheltered in place with a lot of extra time on their hands. Those improvement projects put off for another day? Suddenly, they seemed a lot more pressing. Here in the Coastal Empire, local realty experts say they’ve seen a spike in demand for renovations and upgrades since the coronavirus outbreak. As people are spending more time at home, they're noticing a lot of would-be projects demanding their attention. Each year, the annual amount homeowners spend on improvements creeps upward, although a 2018 report from HomeAdvisor showed that homeowners spent an average of $10,000. But 2020 has been a year like no other in recent memory, bringing with it an increased value on domestic quality of life, from remodeled kitchens and bathrooms to new outdoor living spaces as people stay put. “The COVID-19 lockdown has forced homeowners to really use their homes to their maximum potential,” says Austin Hill, president of Austin Hill Realty. “If they don’t like the way their spaces work, they can

SAVANNAHMAGAZINE.COM

either make improvements, or they can make plans to sell and buy a new home that suits their needs for the entire family,” Hill adds. But don’t put too much on your plate all at once. Before getting started on that next home improvement goal, it’s smart to categorize projects into those that are needs, and those that are wants, experts advise. “I tell my sellers that before they start on cosmetic improvements, they should make sure the bones are in great shape,” says Staci Donegan, associate broker at Seabolt Real Estate. “You can never go wrong in the core systems of your home. Roofs, HVAC systems and water heaters aren’t sexy, but they are big-ticket items that, when putting a home on the market, offer confirmation to a buyer that the home has been well maintained.” Donegan says routine maintenance is just as important to your home’s well-being — and its desirability when it comes time to sell. Rotten wood is an important deferred-maintenance, big-ticket item that shouldn’t be ignored and can drive up costs in the long run.

Don’t sleep on curb appeal, either, says Will Thurman, principal and designated broker for Berkshire Hathaway Home Services, a recent merger of Bay Street Realty Group and Cora Bett Thomas Realty. “Enhancing the exterior of your home adds a value unlike any other,” he says. “You can finesse the front of your house without spending a fortune, and it can make a huge difference.” Once core items have been addressed, homeowners may choose to move on to other areas historically known for a solid return on investment. The time-honored renovation rule is, “bathrooms and kitchens sell houses,” Hill shares. “A fresh kitchen or bath is always nice when you’re thinking about resale value,” he says. “Those projects are expensive, but it’s why buyers like them.” However, instead of making a major and costly renovation to one key room, Hill recommends touching

SAVANNAHMAGAZINE.COM

a smaller space to add value and breathing room to the home. “Adding a bathroom, even a powder room, will increase value. Extra square footage will also add more value versus the cost, such as putting on an addition, enclosing a porch or finishing an attic space,” Hill says. Donegan advises that while kitchens and bathrooms are always smart upgrades, homeowners should consider timeless finishes and colors as a way to maximize their return on investment. “There’s nothing wrong with making selections specific to your own personal preferences, but be prepared when putting your home on the market that those selections may not appeal to the majority of buyers in the market,” Donegan explains. With parents and students working and learning from home now more than ever, local experts say there has been extra emphasis on updated work spaces, offices and dedicated studying environments for virtual classes. If a home has space that wasn't being used much in the past, such as a forgotten nook or sunroom, homeowners can repurpose those areas to create usable spaces for working and studying, Donegan says. With playgrounds, parks and amusements closed for several months this year, many homeowners also found themselves looking for new ways to keep relatives and children entertained at the house. Local realtors say this has led to increased demand for pools, green spaces and playground equipment for backyards. “We’ve seen a rise in exterior space additions, whether they be a patio, a new deck or even adding a swimming pool,” Hill notes. But for those not ready to splurge, small projects to spruce up the outdoor living space can have a big impact in the short term. “You can also add a grilling station, not necessarily a full outdoor kitchen. Then, that might lead to new landscaping as well,” he adds. For those who decide to hire outside help to make their renovations dreams a reality, local experts say to make sure and get two quotes, and go in with the expectations that costs have gone up for work and materials as demand has spiked. Before digging in, it might be best to ask a local expert to confirm which improvement projects will get the most return on investment. “Contact your Realtor,” Hill says. “They are happy to answer any questions.”
