Message From the President South Bay / Long Beach SHP Members, Thank you so much for your dedication and participation in furthering our profession as pharmacists and pharmacy technicians. Your membership with our chapter is being used to directly advance the field of pharmacy, whether that be by your membership dues or your participation in our events. As you may know, our chapter is a non-profit organization, and a big priority for the SBLBSHP Board of Directors is to make sure that our chapter’s income is being put back into our profession and to our members. This year we’ve had great collaboration with industry partners and also a growth in our chapter’s membership so we’ve had plenty of opportunities to give back.

This year our chapter was able to help sponsor some of the coffee carts you saw at Seminar as well as the Seminar Awards Banquet in which our chapter was recognized as CSHP’s Affiliate Chapter Public Relations award winner. This year we have also been able to sponsor several student and resident events, including USC’s Legislation Day and also the New Practitioner Executive Committee / Student Section Executive Committee (NPEC/SSEC) Mixer. Thank you to our members for making these events possible! My hope is that we as a chapter can continue our history of financially giving back to our profession. We held a continuing education program on October 3, 2017 at Torrance Memorial Medical Center by Steven Chen, PharmD, FASHP, FCSHP, FNAP on Transformation Health and Driving Value Through Comprehensive Medication Management. We had a great turn out, fantastic speaker and feedback was all positive. Most recently, we had a program on Immune Thrombocytopenia at Il Fornaio in Manhattan Beach on November 7, 2017. We hope to see everyone at our upcoming program on December 6, 2017 on Vibatic IV at Delius in Long Beach.

SBLBSHP Rocks the 2017 CSHP Seminar By Angela Lee, President-Elect
This year's CSHP Seminar took place at the Paris Hotel in Las Vegas on October 26-29. Year after year, SBLBSHP and our members have been recognized at the seminar for our achievements and dedication to the pharmacy profession, and this year was no exception. SBLBSHP took home the Affiliate Chapter Public Relations Recognition Program Award for the Healthy Heart Fridays and self-care presentations at the Long Beach Rescue Mission coordinated by our public relations co-chairs, Scott Harada and Jenny Wan. Scott was recognized at the award ceremony on Saturday evening. A reception followed, which SBLBSHP proudly sponsored in celebration. Our chapter was also recognized as a 2016 Chapter of Distinction, thanks to the hard work of Immediate Past-President Tim Chou. The seminar is a great place to catch up with old friends, meet and network with new people, hear from great speakers, and earn CE hours. In order to enhance the seminar experience, SBLBSHP sponsored the coffee cart. In addition, for two years in a row, our chapter was among the few that sponsored the student & pharmacist mixer organized by the New Practitioners Executive Committee (NPEC) and Student Section Executive Committee (SSEC). As such, SBLBSHP is committed to giving back to the state organization for the greater good. (continued on next page)

The seminar concluded with the House of Delegates (HOD) meeting on Sunday morning. Cindy Odegard, Rosalin Precchakul, Angela Lee, Tim Chou, Steven Thompson, Daniel Kudryashov, and Kenn Horowitz represented SBLBSHP at the meeting. Proposed resolutions surrounding SB 716, a hot topic of discussion, were referred back to the CSHP board of directors for a committee to review and present for next year's HOD. Â Â It was a productive weekend for all those who attended, full of learning and working hard, but also relaxing, socializing, enjoying fine dining and shows, and taking advantage of everything else that Las Vegas has to offer. The 2018 seminar in San Diego will be here before we know it. We hope to see you there!

Legislative Affairs Recap: CSHP Seminar House of Delegates By Daniel Kudryashov, Legal Affairs Chair
CSHP Seminar in Las Vegas was a success, and it closed with a House of
“CSHP supports the inclusion of pharmacy technicians on the Board of
Delegates (HOD) session that was just as successful. The HOD session voted to accept most of the recommendations of the Board and policy committee. A majority of the discussion that took place
Pharmacy to represent the technician workforce.
focused on the joint resolution submitted by the SBLBSHP and SoCal chapters. The resolution dealt with the pharmacist to non-pharmacist ratio on the Board of Pharmacy and the addition of a pharmacy technician to the Board. By way of background, Senate Bill 716 was sponsored by CSHP and introduced into the state legislature by Senator Ed Hernandez earlier in 2017. The bill aimed to add a pharmacy technician as an additional member of the Board of Pharmacy. However, given concerns brought forth by Senator Hill, CSHP accepted an amendment to add a public member to the Board. As a result, the pharmacist members of the Board would become outnumbered if the bill passed. Concerned with losing the pharmacist majority on the Board of Pharmacy, SBLBSHP and SCSHP chapters submitted a joint resolution requesting a new professional policy to be drafted stating the following:
CSHP supports the composition of the Board of Pharmacy to be constituted by a majority membership of licensed pharmacists to ensure public safety. After about an hour of discussion, the HOD voted to divide the policy into two and vote on each sentence separately. HOD voted to adopt the first sentence as a professional policy. However, there was more controversy surrounding the second part of the resolution. Several comments were made in support of language to maintain a majority of pharmacists on the Board of Pharmacy, and several comments were made in opposition. Following a robust discussion, a motion was made to refer the resolution back to the CSHP Board for further work and analysis. The motion carried and was passed. Hence, the second part of the resolution will be making a comeback at the HOD Session at CSHP Seminar next year. Hope to see you there!

Residency Program Design and Conduct Workshop By Rosalin Preechakul, Clinical Affairs Chair
This year our chapter successfully hosted the very first, informative, all-day Residency Program Design and Conduct (RPDC) workshop on Saturday, October 14th at Tin Roof in Manhattan Beach. Andrea Roberson, an ASHP Lead Surveyor who surveys both PGY1 and PGY2 programs, graciously flew to California to lead the workshop.
Speaker:
Andrea Roberson, Pharm.D.
Cindy Odegard and Rosalin Preechakul (Clinical Affairs Co-Chairs) welcomed members as they enjoyed a delicious outdoor breakfast buffet amidst the scenic view of Manhattan Village Plaza. Attendees chatted with one another and engaged in conversation with pharmaceutical representatives. Members commented on the tasty breakfast bacon, some of the best they have ever had, satisfying their taste buds before the workshop! Our chapter was especially honored that several distinguished guests including Vicky Ferraresi (CSHP President) and Matt Kamada (SBLBSHP President) attended the event. A total of 35 residency program directors and preceptors from all over California attended the event. A special thank you to those members with long commutes who drove in from San Diego and others who flew in from the Bay Area to support us! The goal was to bring an RPDC workshop to the local area and at a lower cost to our members. Members commented that they enjoyed the question and answer format while others thought it was very helpful to bring materials from their program for review.

They also appreciated the opportunity to ask specific questions about their residency programs. Members were very impressed at Andrea’s ability to distill the ASHP requirements into a format that was easy to understand. Not only was Andrea knowledgeable about the accreditation process, but she also knew how to satisfy her audience by thoughtfully flying in a generous bag of treats to engage the audience. After a few rounds of sweets, members feasted on an appetizing lunch buffet during which everyone had the opportunity to network and share ideas with fellow participants. This event would not have been possible without the support of our Pharma friends from Boehringer Ingelheim, Janssen Oncology, Novartis, Incyte and Pharmacyclics. Thank you for your continuous support of our chapter! We would also like to thank our dedicated student volunteers, Sophie Cheng and Lyndsie Okumura, who arrived early to help set up the tables and check in our guests. Lastly, the event was a large success due to the strong commitment of our members who came out to attend the workshop. We had multiple requests for more residency preceptor development programs, thus we promise to bring more exciting workshops to our members next year!

Long Beach Rescue Mission Cholesterol 9/8/17 By Scott Harada, Public Relations Chair
The SBLBSHP is now halfway through our second year of classes at the Long Beach Rescue Mission. On September 8th, USC P3 student pharmacists Brandon Kurniawan and Alaina Austel presented on cholesterol to our local shelter to about 40 people. As the number of participants grows, so does the number of challenging questions, but our students did a fantastic job providing good recommendations to our local community. The next class has been pushed back to November 10th and will feature the topics of smoking cessation and asthma, which are critical for our homeless population. We are expecting a large turnout and plenty of questions to go around. If you are at all interested in precepting for one of these events, I encourage you to email Scott Harada at haradarx@gmail.com for a syllabus. We are looking for volunteer pharmacists for January 5th at 10AM on diet and exercise as well as March 2nd at 10AM on pain management and prescription drug abuse. LBRM is on Pacific and Anaheim in Long Beach. We thank you for your continued contribution to our local community.

Bread Of Life Health Fair By Scott Harada, Public Relations Chair
This past September 16th, SBLBSHP members Yasmin Yap-Mariano and Scott Harada volunteered at the Bread of Life Health Fair where about 200 visitors showed up for screening services such as blood pressure, cholesterol, and blood glucose which were provided by USC student pharmacists. Â Every year, the number of visitors and the number of patients has increased. Â The health fair directors would like to give thanks to SBLBSHP for providing volunteers over the years in dedication to patient care.
