Fall: the season of everything pumpkin, when kids go back to school, World Series, Halloween, when your favorite show returns to TV, Lebron James' debut with Lakers, and when you start to think "Wow, time flies. It's almost the end of the year!" This fall, SBLBSHP has been busy bringing you a valuable CE programs, celebrating all of our achievements at the Seminar, updating our bylaws, and getting ready for the next year. Special welcome to those of you who have recently joined our chapter; you have made a great choice! This section of the newsletter is a way for me to share with you what has been on my mind. This time, I want to talk about the value of being proud of your professional involvement and showing it off.

Fall 2018
First of all, I want to applaud all of you for continuing your membership in a professional organization beyond pharmacy school and residency. By maintaining your membership, you are among a very small percentage of pharmacists and technicians in California actively contributing to the growth of our profession. You should be proud of yourself whenever new bills get passed that expand the scope of pharmacists and technicians because CSHP would not be able pursue political actions without your support. Sure, it may be easier to just spend that annual membership due for something else, blame the Board of Pharmacy for frustrations at work, and complain about the worsening job market. However, you have chosen to stay active and do something about the challenges facing our profession through your ongoing involvement in CSHP. Now, I challenge you to share your pride with your colleagues (and convince them to join too, of course). Whenever my co-workers or friends find out that I'm on the board with a local association, the reaction that I get 99% of time is "Wow, you're still involved? Good for you." At one point, I realized that something about this is not right; they are only surprised because they don't know what they're missing out on. Yes, staying involved does require extra time and effort but the rewards are so worthwhile. Being active in the society has opened my eyes to what's going on in the pharmacy world beyond my workplace. I have met some incredible people through CSHP who have become my role models and friends. I have developed valuable leadership skills. Most importantly, I feel accomplished knowing that my membership is helping the leaders in our profession do their work on the legislative side. These are my reasons for my commitment to life-long membership, which I'm proud to share. Please don't be shy, boasting about your professional involvement, especially to residents and students. Rather than telling them, "I'm sorry that there are so many schools now and the job market is so tough," let them know how they can play an active role in helping our profession grow. I'm hopeful that together, we could build a future when it would be surprising NOT to stay involved. THANK YOU for being a member of CSHP and choosing SBLBSHP as your chapter. Please let us know if there is anything else that our board could do to engage you and add value to your membership. Happy holidays and I look forward to seeing you at the Night with Industry/ Installation Banquet in January! Sincerely, Angela Lee 2018 SBLBSHP President

Sailing into Knowledge at CSHP Seminar 2018 & More! By Angela Lee, PharmD, BCPS, President This year's seminar took place at Sheraton San Diego Hotel & Marina from October 4th through 7th. It was a huge success with a record breaking number of over 2300 attendees and the sold-out exhibition hall. There were more than 50 CE sessions offered with a wide range of topics including the pharmacy law updates, opioid epidemic, clinical pearls in management of various diseases, sterile compounding, cannabis, and more. Don't forget to claim your CE credit on the CSHP website! It was especially a great one for SBLBSHP, as our chapter received the Affiliate Chapter Public Relations Recognition Program award for the high school scholarship essay contest coordinated by Alicia Wong and Jenny Zheng earlier this year. This is the second year in a row that our chapter received this award. We are very proud of our Public Relations Committee for their dedication to community outreach.

More importantly, our long-time board member Steven Thompson was installed as the CSHP President at the House of Delegates meeting. The reception to kick off his presidency took place Thursday evening, attended by past presidents and other distinguished guests. After he was officially installed, Steve gave a heartfelt speech thanking all those who have supported him including SBLBSHP. Our chapter is honored to continue our support for Steve during his presidency. For this year's CSHP Board of Directors election, SBLBSHP has two candidates running: Lisa Lum for the president-elect and Dan Bauman for the director position. Lisa is a past president of our chapter as well as the current president of the CSHP Foundation. She was nominated for the CSHP Pharmacist of the Year award for 2 years in a row. Dan also previously served as the SBLBSHP president and is currently our director and the education/industry affairs committee member. Please cast your vote to support Lisa and Dan when the official ballot comes out later this year! Representing SBLBSHP, Kenn Horowitz, Angela Lee, Rosalin Preechakul, Matt Kamada, Helena Lau, and Joanne Lin attended the House of Delegates meeting. The meeting was as smooth as it could be, thanks to all the hard work done in advance by all the delegates, alternate delegates, and CSHP Board of Directors since the Regional Delegates Conference. The seminar is not only a place for learning, networking, and policy-making, but also provides great opportunities to catch up with old friends, make new friends, and simply to have fun. We are already looking forward to the next year's seminar at the the Disneyland Resort & Hotel in Anaheim, October 17th through 20th, 2019. The force is strong with SBLBSHP! (Star Wars land is opening at Disneyland in Summer 2019) See you there!

Regional Delegates Conference By Matt Kamada, PharmD, BCPS, Immediate Past President Every year CSHP holds five regional delegate meetings across the state of California as a precursor to the official House of Delegates held at Seminar. The purpose of the Regional Delegate Conference is to discuss and offer feedback to the CSHP policy proposals so that changes can be made before all the regions come together at Seminar. This year SBLBSHP’s delegates Matthew Kamada, Rosalin Preechakul, and Jennifer Kwon represented the chapter at the Region 5 Delegates Conference held at Marshall B.Ketchum University College of Pharmacy on Saturday August 25th. Chapter Member Kenn Horowitz was also in attendance. CSHP President and SBLBSHP Director Steven Thompson moderated the event. Overall the event went very smoothly. Our delegates were well prepared and offered constructive feedback for several proposals. The Regional Delegates Conference was very crucial and productive, which led to a quick and united House of Delegates at Seminar.

Preceptor Development Workshop By Rosalin Preechakul, PharmD, APh, BCPS, President-Elect The highly demanded Preceptor Development series returned this year. Last year our chapter hosted an all-day Residency Program Design and Conduct (RPDC) workshop and this year we hosted a Preceptor Development Workshop Dinner on September 18th at Salt Creek Grille in El Segundo. Dr. Susie H. Park, PharmD, BCPP, FCSHP, the Associate Dean for Student Affairs and Associate Professor of Clinical Pharmacy from USC School of Pharmacy, graciously led the workshop. Dr. Susie H. Park had great tips and stories from teaching students and residents during their psychiatry pharmacy experiences at LAC+USC Medical Center. Clinical Affairs Co-Chairs Rosalin Preechakul, Lauren Alfano, and Cindy La welcomed members as they enjoyed a cozy and delicious dinner while earning 1.5 hours of CE credit on preceptor development. SBLBSHP President Angela Lee also attended the event to help support the program and invited members to attend our monthly board meetings. The event was very well attended with a total of 35 preceptors and professors from pharmacy schools in the area. Guests were able to network and mingle with each other and with the pharmaceutical representatives over a glass of wine and appetizers. Members commented on how informative and practical the presentation was and enjoyed the speaker’s examples and engagement with the audience. This event would not have been possible without the support of our Pharma friends from Novartis Oncology, Tesaro, and CSL Behring Biotherapies. Thank you for your continuous support of our chapter! We would also like to thank our dedicated student volunteer Kara Onouye who arrived early to help check in our guests. Lastly, the event was a large success due to the strong commitment of our members who came out to attend the workshop. We had multiple requests for more preceptor development programs, thus we promise to bring more exciting workshops to our members in the future!

The 3B's: Biologics, Biosimilars and Biobetters
By Angela Lee, PharmD, BCPS, President This year's final CE program took place at Torrance Memorial Medical Center on November 6th, coordinated by our education/clinical affairs committee members Angela Jeong and Dan Bauman. The evening began with dinner and a networking session with pharmaceutical industry sponsors Amgen and Astrazeneca, who enlightened our members with information on their latest products. Dinner and networking was followed by a captivating presentation by Dr. Astkhik Star Zakian, a clinical pharmacist at Anthem as well as an adjunct professor of pharmaceutical and health economics practice at University of Southern California. She engaged the audience with her depth of knowledge on a relatively novel concept in pharmacy - biologics, biosimilars, and biobetters. Active discussion took place throughout the entire presentation. It was a valuable learning experience for everyone, as evidenced by positive evaluations all around. Again, much thanks to Amgen and Astrazeneca for your generous sponsorship! Moreover, thank you to all the members who drove through the election day traffic to attend; your active participation continues to motivate our board to plan valuable programs. Great job, education/clinical affairs committee, as every aspect of this program was on point the venue, topic, speaker, and of course, delicious food. 2018 was indeed a year of successful CE programs for SBLBSHP, and please reach out to the board if you have any topic that you're interested to learn more about in 2019.

By Michael Palaroan, Western University Pharmacy Student Legislative Day: September 21, 2018 On September 21, 2018, Western University CSHP collaborated with 4 other student organizations at WesternU in organizing the annual Legislative Day event. With 355 participants, the event was a great success - it provided a platform to spread knowledge about legislative affairs impacting the world of pharmacy today. The event commenced with the opening remarks of Victor Law, the president of the California Board of Pharmacy, and was followed by fascinating presentations highlighting the importance of student/ pharmacist involvement in legislative affairs. The guest panel comprised of a variety of seasoned and influential professionals including Jon Roth, Dr. Ken Thai, Dr. Robert Stein, and Dr. Brian Wong. Topics covered during the presentation included government bills relevant to pharmacists (AB315 and SB493), potential safety concerns regarding the importation of counterfeit medications, and the importance of legislative advocacy. KGI Chapter Updates
By Sheryl Chico, KGI Student Liaison KGI’s annual fall brown bag event took place on September 29, 2018 at the Mt. San Antonio Gardens Assisted Living Community. KGI-SSHP collaborated with the SGVSHP Chapter and CPhA to provide residents with an opportunity to have their medication profiles extensively reviewed. This event was organized by CSHP’s very own Dr. Daniel Kudo, Pharm.D. and included many other pharmacists, such as Dr. Ken Thai, as leaders. 1st and 2nd year pharmacy students served as scribes and were paired with a 3rd or 4th year pharmacy student to perform medication therapy management strategies such as counseling on inappropriate therapy regimes, optimization of current therapy, and identification of duplicate or high-risk medication. A poster reviewing cardiovascular disease was also presented to the residents and served as an educational tool to provide awareness. This successful collaboration yielded proper medication management of over 100 residents.

On November 1st, we hosted USC’s Annual Legislative Day at the John Stauffer Pharmaceutical Center. At this event, students learned about current legislation in the field as well as the impact of legislations from influential and inspiring speakers. The overall theme of this year focused on the challenges with implementing SB493, the success of AB315, and the legislative process. We had the honor of having Dr. Steve Thompson, CSHP President, teach the students about the legislative process and motivate students to get involved in legislative advocacy.
We would like to sincerely thank SBLBSHP for your generous donation towards USC’s Legislative Day. We are extremely grateful to have your support in all of our events and, as this year comes to a close, we look forward to all the great things we can accomplish together in the New Year!
