Hello SBLBSHP members, Time flies when we are having fun! Hope you had a great Pharmacy Week in October where you had time to reflect on your accomplishments and celebrate one of the best professions in health care. I would like to take this opportunity to thank you for maintaining your membership and continuing to support CSHP and selecting SBLBSHP as your home chapter. A special welcome to those of you who have recently joined our chapter as you have taken the initial steps in supporting our pharmacy profession. Your membership with our chapter is being used to directly advance the field of pharmacy as it allows CSHP to collaborate with lawmakers to advocate bills that expand our scope of practice.

Our chapter was very proud to celebrate two of our very own SBLBSHP members at CSHP Seminar at Disneyland this year! BIG CONGRATULATIONS to Lisa Gunther Lum for being installed as the new CSHP President and a big shout-out to Steve Thompson for his exemplary dedication as outgoing CSHP President. Under our past leadership and amazing board members, we have been recognized as Regional Chapter of Distinction for many years in a row. I’m thrilled to share with you that this year our chapter was again awarded the Regional Chapter of Distinction at CSHP Seminar! This award was established to recognize chapters that show excellence in finance, business processes, membership growth, and member satisfaction. We would not be able to get the award without YOUR continuing support. This year we have been welcoming many pharmacy students and sponsoring more pharmacy schools for events and Legislative Days. Our chapter has been accommodating more students at our board meetings while expanding our mentorship programs to help more students. We would also like to wish our new graduates good luck with taking the CPJE exam and hope that you will join us in mentoring the next generation of pharmacy professionals. Our profession is only as strong as those who support it and it is important that we include and mentor our students who are our future colleagues in pharmacy. Lastly, thank you for allowing SBLBSHP to be a part of your family. As we plan for next year, please do not hesitate to reach out to me or any of our board members if you would like to be more involved in our chapter. Happy holidays and I look forward to seeing you at the Night with Industry and Installation Banquet in January! Sincerely, Rosalin Preechakul, PharmD, APh, BCPS 2019 SBLBSHP President

By Angela Lee, PharmD, BCPS, Immediate Past President, Social Affairs Co-Chair This year's seminar took place at the Disneyland Resort in Anaheim, October 17-20. The seminar is where pharmacists, pharmacy technicians, and pharmacy students gather annually to learn, network, celebrate our accomplishments, and engage in meaningful discussions to move CSHP and our profession forward. As always, SBLBSHP was well-represented at the seminar. First of all, it marked the conclusion of Steven Thompson's term as the CSHP president, as he passed the baton to Lisa Gunther Lum; SBLBSHP is very proud to be the home of the CSHP president, back-to-back! Dan Bauman (past SBLBSHP president) and Cynthia Bennett (current SBLBSHP pharmacy technician coliaison) shared their platforms at the Meet-theCandidates session as they are running to join the CSHP Board of Directors. Please remember to show your support and cast your vote by November 25th! The CE sessions were made possible by the CSHP Continuing Pharmacy Education (CPE) Committee, including SBLBSHP members - Rosalin Preechakul and Hai Tran. Our chapter also sponsored the clinical skills competition for students. At the House of Delegates, SBLBSHP was represented by our delegates - Angela Jeong, Angela Lee, Jennifer Fong, Matt Kamada, and Rosalin Preechakul - as well as Kenneth Horowitz, past CSHP president. Last but not least, HUGE THANKS to our members and students who volunteered in various capacities to help the seminar go smoothly! It was exciting to see so many attendees proudly sport the SBLBSHP badge ribbon.

Long Beach Rescue Mission
By: Alicia Wong, PharmD and Grace Kim, PharmD, Public Relations Co-Chairs On September 13th, SBLBSHP conducted its fourth (out of a series of six) selfcare presentation at the Long Beach Rescue Mission (LBRM). We had students Jennifer Stein from USC School of Pharmacy and Esther Im and Negin Khosrovani from Chapman School of Pharmacy present on the topic of Pain Management. With their presentation, they were able to educate the community regarding the different types of pain and practical non-pharmacological and pharmacological ways to alleviate pain. Overall, they had a successful turnout with about 30 participants. They were able to educate the LBRM community about pain management and also bring awareness to what pharmacists can do. We would like to thank the pharmacy students for giving back to the community and educating the community about this important topic. In addition, we would like to thank Dr. Frances Ngok and Dr. May Mak for volunteering their time to make this event a success.

ABCs OF TRANSITIONS OF CARE
By Lauren Alfano, PharmD, BCPS, Educational Affairs Committee Co-Chair One year ago, Senate Bill 1254 was passed into law, requiring hospital pharmacy staff to obtain medication lists for high risk patients upon admission. Since that time, hospital pharmacy administration has been faced with the task of defining which patients are high risk and changing pharmacy staff’s roles to satisfy the law. In order to keep our members informed on this relatively new process, SBLBSHP invited Dr. Jesse Wisniewski, a Transitions of Care (TOC) Pharmacist, to present “Raising the Standard: The Case for Transitions of Care Pharmacy in General Practice” in November. Dr. Wisniewski’s presentation touched on why TOC is so important, which pharmacy personnel can be part of a TOC team, as well as a step-by-step process on how to create a TOC program. Attendees enjoyed the relevant and informative presentation which was held at the Miyako Hybrid Hotel in Torrance.

SBLB Mentor Mentee Social: Eat, Drink, Mingle By Helena Lau, PharmD and Tiffany Luong, PharmD, Mentorship Program Chairs
The third annual mentor-mentee social of the mentorship program took place on August 30th, 2019 at the Five O’Clock Wine Bar in Long Beach, and it was a huge success! There was plenty of indoor and outdoor seating, even around firepits at the venue. We had a total 34 attendees - including mentors, student mentees, SBLBSHP board members, and even OCSHP board members. Everyone enjoyed each other’s company, especially with wine, beer, and platters of panini, pizza, and
sliders. The main purpose of the social was to provide an opportunity for mentors and mentees to get to know one another in person, in addition to monthly e-mails. Mentees were also able to meet other pharmacists in addition to their mentors. The mentorship program has been effective in engaging students in our chapter’s activities and giving them opportunities to be active in the profession beyond school. In fact, several of our current board members are former mentees. The social was scheduled from 6:30pm-8:30pm, but many people stayed well past this time to eat, drink, and mingle together. A special shout out to Angela Lee, this year’s SBLBSHP social co-chair and immediate past president, for helping with the wine selection and logistics of the event. As always, the mentorship program continues to be only as successful as the support provided from the mentors listed on the next page, so thank you, mentors, for your time and dedication. There are a total of 24 mentor-mentee pairs in the 2019 program. We look forward to seeing more mentors and mentees together at future SBLBSHP events!

Victory #2. SB 276 - Immunizations: medical exemptions: PASSED AND SIGNED! This bill closes loopholes and tightens up the current process for obtaining an exemption from the immunization requirements of school aged children. It requires licensed physicians and surgeons to use an electronic, standardized, statewide medical exemption request using the California Immunization Registry (CAIR). It becomes effective January 1, 2021, and will be the only documentation of a medical exemption that a governing authority (like a school administration) may accept. This bill was highly controversial with opponents to immunizations organizing protest rallies at the state capitol. Pharmacists are likely to be asked about these requirements by parents.
SB 276
Ongoing Effort: AB 1131 Medi-Cal: comprehensive medication management: THE CAMPAIGN CONTINUES! Patients meeting specific conditions would qualify for Comprehensive Medication Management (CMM) as a covered benefit of Medical. This bill has unanimously passed the assembly and has passed the senate health committee. It is currently being “Held under submission”, meaning that the committee intends to engage in further discussion and review. We are hopeful it will move to the senate floor for a full vote.
AB 1131

By Sanam Rashidi and Daryl Larry-Sar, UCSF Student Liaisons This year at our Registered Campus Organization (RCO) Fair, we had the chance to meet our new P1s and share what our organization offers to student pharmacists. We emphasized that CSHP exposes students to clinical pharmacy via networking events and clinical lunch talks. We were joined by over 100 P1 attendees at our information session. Students learned about the value of CSHP and how beneficial this organization can be for their professional pharmacy career. Our advisor, Dr. Michael Trillanes, also shared insight into how CSHP shaped his pathway through pharmacy from being a student at Western to becoming a neurocritical care pharmacist at UCSF Medical Center.

In September, we hosted a new event called “The Things I Wish I Knew” where second and third-year pharmacy students discussed topics such as saving money, professionalism, study tricks, and recommendations of places to see in San Francisco. The aim of this event was to acquaint first-year pharmacy students with the transition to professional school as well as living in San Francisco. During a lunch break, we hosted a “Legislative Lunch Talk” to discuss legislative bills: SB159, SB24, and AB1131. Dr. Kethen So, the Interim Director of Pharmacy at the UCSF Medical Center, and Dr. Martin Iyoya, the Director of Pharmacy Service of John Muir Health, led a highly engaging discussion with students on the impacts of legislation on pharmacy practice. In October, we hosted our annual Residency Roundtable event for pharmacy students to give them the opportunity to meet current residents and residency directors, while learning more about the residency application process. Students were able to hear about the unique features of over 10 different programs and ask specific questions.
Pictured: Residency Roundtable (left), Legislative Lunch Talk (right) We are proud to be working with our Golden Gate CSHP (GGSHP) affiliate chapter again this year to implement our mentorship program between the chapters' pharmacists and UCSF student pharmacists. We hope to help students build connections with practicing pharmacists and gain more insight into their pharmacy journeys. To start off the year, we held our Mentor Program Kick-Off at the GGSHP Membership BBQ which took place at Golden Gate Park in October.

Musubis & Membership Drive This September, the KGI-SSHP student chapter started the school year by hosting a Hawaiian themed “Musubis and Membership Drive! Students had the opportunity to meet two of our SSHP faculty advisors, Dr. Christine Cadiz, PharmD, MA and Dr. Robert Stein, PharmD, JD, as they discussed the benefits of joining CSHP and ASHP. During the membership drive, students engaged with our advisors through an interactive ice breaker game to learn fun facts about our advisors and how invaluable this organization has impacted them throughout their journey and career as a pharmacist. As a clinical pharmacist, Dr. Cadiz shared with students the importance of advancing pharmacy practice through her residency experience. Dr. Stein discussed the significance of advocating for the pharmacy profession through his perspective as a lawyer. In addition, we had student testimonials that spoke of how SSHP has shaped their interests in pursuing a residency and health-systems pharmacy. Overall, it was a successful membership drive with a great amount of students expressing an interest in our organization.

Long Beach Rescue Mission We collaborated with South Bay Long Beach Society of Health-Systems pharmacists (SBLBSHP) and the American Cancer Society for the “Great American Smokeout Event” to educate people on the importance of asthma and smoking cessation. On Friday, July 12th executive board members Mitchell Timbol and Stephanie Truc Nguyen had the opportunity to present the importance of quitting smoking and asthma care to Long Beach Rescue Mission (LBRM) members and New Life attendees. LBRM is a local homeless shelter that provides food, shelter, clothing, and spiritual guidance to the homeless and low-income population in the Long Beach area. This event raised awareness on the importance of self-care and improving one’s well being through patient education. There was a total of about 20 attendees who participated in the informative presentation and learned about the harmful effects of smoking, dangers of e-cigarettes, the health benefits of quitting, and what treatment opportunities are available to them. We had the opportunity to help members familiarize themselves with proper asthma control and its relationship to smoking. This was a great experience to work with our affiliate chapter and provide support to our local communities. Thank you to our preceptor Dr. Elaine Nguyen from the American University of Health Sciences (AUHS)! KGI-SSHP looks forward to more collaborations with the Long Beach Rescue Mission in the future!

Speaker Series with President Elect: Lisa Lum PharmD., FASHP, FCSHP For our second general meeting, we had the opportunity of having CSHP PresidentElect and Medication Safety Officer of Glendale Adventist Hospital, Dr. Lisa Lum, speak to our members! Dr. Lum discussed her journey as a pharmacist, the current state of pharmacy, and the importance of our role as future pharmacists. It was very inspiring listening to her motivating words as she encouraged us to find and create opportunities for ourselves in traditional and non-traditional fields of pharmacy. Our scope of practice is only expanding. Dr. Lum highlighted the benefits and importance of students getting involved in CSHP early on in preparation for residency and their career, in addition to the importance of retaining membership. Overall, it was a great opportunity for our students to meet Dr. Lum, as we received such a unique perspective on CSHP and opportunities for student pharmacists. We appreciate her for taking the time to invest in the professional development of our students and we cannot wait to have her join us again in the near future!
